'Baby Reindeer' Creator Richard Gadd Reveals True Story Behind Hit New Show | This Morning

  • We’re joined by Richard Gadd, who’s turned his real-life experience of being stalked into a hit TV series ‘Baby Reindeer’. Working behind the bar of a pub, he offered one female punter a free cup of tea after she claimed she couldn’t afford a drink. That single act of kindness set off a series of events which would change his life forever. The woman - ‘Martha’ - went on to send him 40,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemail while obsessively stalking him outside his home, at his workplace and at his comedy gigs. Richard joins us today to explain why he wanted to share his story and how it feels to have created Netflix’s current number-one TV series.

That's interesting. I actually found that scene to be the most unrealistic and staged in the whole series. I get that they had to make it more cinematic than how it was in reality but i think they could have done it in a more believable way.

After watching it I thought it was the best ever. However now I'm not so sure.
I believe it needs a warning as could trigger people.
Not all of us go onto to self destruct, use drugs and generally destroy everyone around us, there is another path. I fear this gives licence to the negative path.
Has the male been charged? If not why not? Is he still out there roaming freely?
Gadd said in another interview that the stalker in the series is so far from the truth of the real one she wouldn't even recognise herself 🤔
I do think once the press dig deep into this, which they will, it's not as factual and heroic as he's made out.

I think its quite brave of him to leave all the bits where he went wrong. He doesn’t even say he’s the victim but that he was vulnerable and a person that makes a lot of mistakes.
It made me rethink even the validation of victims. Sometimes the victim also looks to be victimised… I really like that he was brave enough to leave all the bits where he was the one at fault. And I like how he made sure we understood that Martha is someone with a mental disorder and needs help.

The scene where he breaks down and confesses everything at his comedy show is one of the most powerful scenes of any TV series I've ever seen. Incredible stuff

I think the story being told in such a self-contained format ads to its strength. Every episode also had a different runtime, to give every part of the story the space it needed to be understood.

The first thing I thought after watching this show is that Richard has such immense talent and intellect. You can see his intelligence from both on and off screen. Capturing such complex feelings and experiences that he’d gone through and to relive them?! Insane. Such a great guy that deserves all of this success and more ❤

The strength to act out his trauma is immense. People can’t imagine how much strength it sometimes takes to go through it for example in therapy but to act out so many of those scenes is absolutely unimaginable for me. And I have been in therapy for over 10 years. I have so much respect for that man for telling his story. Amazing strength 👏🏻🙏🏻 And the series was insane…. After the I finished the 3rd episode my eyes were hurting because I watched them with my eyes wide open 😳😳😳 THE WHOLE ENTIRE TIME. I just couldn’t rest them. It was just so insane what I was watching 😱😱

Part of why I believe him is due to the fact that he doesn’t always come across great in the series. He’s constantly doing stuff that makes you want to scream, “Stop encouraging her!! Don’t you see that she’s going to latch onto that and further believe her delusions about your relationship!?” as well as making a series of bad decisions that make an already bad situation worse. If he was lying he wouldn’t have included truths that make him look bad. But the decisions he made are so common with people dealing with loneliness and trauma. I mean, I was really depressed years ago and got into a toxic relationship. I was just lucky that he wasn’t a stalker, or maybe I’d have a story like his too. Showing the truth of his situation will hopefully make people more aware of their own actions and how to keep themselves safe. After what I went through I wholeheartedly believe that if you’re depressed or actively working through trauma of some kind it’s best not to date. You’re too vulnerable to potentially end up in a toxic situation. Hopefully she’ll see the show and get help so she doesn’t hurt herself or anyone else.
Thank you for telling you’re story! I hope you’ve found peace, happiness, and healing. God Bless.

Having a stalker who acts exactly the same way is crushing. Mine sits outside my work every day and screams everything she thinks she knows about me to my coworkers and friends. I appreciated the series, but its still a far cry from what you go through if this actually happens to you.

Richard have showed us what a real cinema should be - it should tell us stories about real people, inspire and understand people and that we should start hearing stories from them. Brilliant acting and story-telling. It was brave of him to relive and act his experience out. He deserves an award and recognition for this!!
