As a corporate video producer and audio engineer I have high expectations for how to videos. Too many are really garbage or drawn out lengthy productions that say nothingof use. HOWEVER, This video is presented well with informative information and is a true 5 star gem. I couldn't remember how to put new string on my trimmer. As soon as I began watching this it all came back to me. Although my cover took a little persuasion to get off due to the dirt inside, the basic concept was spot on. I ended up using a large pair of channel locks to help get the reel to move off of the spindle and past the locking mechanism. I just wish that You Tube had more videos of this quality and less fluff. Anyone can post a "video" to tell you how to do something, but most aren't worth the time spent to watch them. This one is worth every second.
Great Video.
I watched over a dozen videos.
This is the only one that has the knob on the head like mine.
I was able to replace the line quite easily once I knew how to do it.
I have saved the link for when I replace the line again.
Likely 10 years down the road.
Thank you for the easy to follow steps and directions.😁
There are many videos on this, so I suspect that many people are having problems. Some claim that you have to press the spool down t before turning clockwise. This one does not and that is in agreement with the manual that came with my trimmer. This is the best that I have seen and it works. Thank you
You're a DIY master as evidenced by a complete lack of cursing while winding the string.
ruclips.net/video/E0gwvbR2pfs/видео.htmlm31s Ok, Thank God for the ability to edit. Because this one really sent me overboard. (Check the link)
I was having a nightmare spoiling the cable and it kept coming out. After watching this video it was simple, thanks, was really helpful
Bourke, Thanks for the post. Have a beer when you are done with the yard. It's too hot this summer to be doing yard work. Lol!
I watched a couple other videos that were twice as long and half as informative. Yours was straight forward and to the point, this video should set the standard for all “How To” videos! Excellent job
Thanks Rob!
I love these type of to the point videos. Worked perfect for me. Didn’t use desalt strong though. A little more tricky with a stiff plastic line. Thank you sir.
JOHN THAnk you brother, ive gone back to this video 3 times, last 3 cuts on the yard, just to confirm im doing it right. I just cant grasp this one
Thank you for the help. One note is there are two notches in the spool, for the Dewalt OEM line, it’s best to use the small rounded notch. If you try the square notch you will fight all day.
Jim, yes I believe the other notches are in case you do not buy the DeWalt name brand string.
Thank you for great video. My problem was the string wouldn't stay in holding hole.
I am pretty sure there are actually two size of holes in the mount. make sure you’re putting it into the smaller or the larger hole based on the size of your string
I bent the end of the string back on itself for about half an inch and was easily able to get the string started. After a few times around ir will remain in place.
Very clear instructions, unlike the users manual
Thx. I found that the no frills Bunnings cord I bought had a lot of memory in it and tended to spring everywhere when attempting to drop the spool
Back in. I also found it easier to cut the end in an angle so it would fit into the holding notch (and there there seemed to be two notches, one being deeper and better to grip the start of the line.
Thanks. That white notch was extremely helpful, because, for the life of me, I couldn't get that damn spool off.
Thanks, brother! The other video here on this procedure didn't help me much, but yours definitely did. Really appreciate it.
I found the dewalt trimmer line to be pretty garbage but this video is A+
thanks for a simple yet informative video on how to feed my dewalt trimmer. you don't know how many times I almost trashed this trimmer]
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! My husband and I were going around in circles trying to get that dang string changed. Your video did the trick 😃😃😃
Great instructional vid. Easy to follow. I wish I knew how many feet to wind on because I usually like to cut to length before I start winding. I don’t like wrestling with the line package if that makes any sense. Much appreciated.
They recommend winding 10ft of string into each feed groove.
Thanks Tony. I think I will sharpie the first foot so I’ll know when about out. Nothing worse than running out half way through a job.
@@joebailey2490 That's a great idea Joe, I think I'll do the same! Also -- I got a 2nd 5aH battery so when the battery runs out of juice (not much warning) I can swap out without missing a beat.
ruclips.net/video/lV8m0h8-3Kk/видео.html 25ft.
Thanks for this. We’ve been sitting over the damn trimmer for over a year lol
Tnx for your help. I was ready to throw this thing into a grinder.
@Charles Dobbs
LOL... I feel you!
Excellent directions! Even “the wife” could follow them successfully.
I like your DIY instructions very informative and direct to the point I watch others they don’t point the arrow they just pull off. Thanks for your instructions ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
thank you john, had no clue about the white notch when unlocking the head, thank you for your help!
Yaya! Best video ever for reloading string
Nice to the point video, No stupid music or someone trying to be funny.
Actually that means you missed my low key joke at the end (drinking a corona during Covid) LOL
Thank you for this was stuck in a rut trying to read the manual and do it that way.
Shared.
Helped me 100%.
My mother got me a dewalt battery weed eater for my birthday ❤❤
Thanks I couldn’t find the old style trimmer head. This was a great video.
Thank you, I just put new string in by watching your fabulous video 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome Video sir! You made it too easy! Thank you!!
How come 96% of people commenting are like 96% positive?
Thanks for doing this video I had no idea how to use my new weed wacker with your help I’m on point. Thanks again.
If the spool cap will not come off I found out you can drill a hole in the center large enough for a deepwell socket to reach the nut, then zip it free with an impact. The cap remains useable until you get a replacement.
Excellent. Simple, linear tutorial. Thanks for sharing knowledge
Your Video is GREAT !!! very clear, concise, to the point
Thank you so much for video! Taking the top off was driving me crazy
Awesome video thank you for helping me today...
Thank you so much for your clear directions! Getting ready to try it for the first time.
Great review, obviously you don't wind 225 feet onto the spool, how much string do you use for each side, thanks again
I just wound it until it was almost level with the inner partition (edge). Both top and bottom.
Thanks
Excellent demonstration!
Thanks Jim!
Thanks for making it simple and to the point! EXCELLENT Video!
Great ty so much. Do you know if there is a recommended sting size
Troy, when replacing the line, use only .080 inches (2.032 mm) diameter line (MODEL NO. DWO1DT801 OR DWO1DT802) is recommended. For optimal performance, do not use .095 line. Other sized may degrade performance and cause damage to the trimmer. This will help you avoid all issues.
@@JONSDIY thanks I got it and finnish it's a great waker
You made it so simple ///compared to dewalts instructions(nightmare)

Thank you so very much! Your video is extremely helpful.👍
Friendly greetings from Slovenia
Thank you for your help
Thanks...This video is very clear,Well done.
Amazingly simple and clear - Thank you sir!!
Glad trimmers have changed with feeding string today.
Thank you so much. I was lost on how to do this
THANK YOU! Great video!!
Approximately how much line goes on each section? I assume too much line will cause the tap feature not to work well??
Never really measured it when putting it in. I just filled it. If wound tight and right it will not affect the tap feature.
Dude! Fantastic explanation! Saved my day! Thanks very much!
Great job fast and easy
This tutorial saved my day! Great video, great instructions. Thank you so much
THANK YOU !
Concise and to the point. Worked great. Thanks.
Great video, made it clear as day.
Excellent instructions ! Thanks.
Thanks Mr. Poyson!
Wonderful demonstration, thanks a lot
Well done, to the point video.
You are SO GREAT !
You should always subscribe to great channels. :-)
Thank you sir...I will be checking you out again! New Subscriber too!
it is a darn good trimmer.i'd buy it again.
Rich, yes I agree, I have had no problems with mine and it is still getting the job done! Thanks for your comment.
Hi I was wondering if you had a video about how to replace the head completely?
mine fell apart the other day and all the head parts scattered...
No sorry I don’t but your the second one to ask that so it looks like I will be doing one very soon.
Thanks for the very clear and descriptive tutorial!
Truman, just out of curiosity, did you struggle to figure out how the hell this thing opened. It took me forever to figure it out. Then once I did, I felt dumb that it was so easy. Lol! Thanks for the comment. Jon
Actually, I hadn't gotten that far yet. I had just unboxed it and was reading the manual and was totally confused by the instructions. Your video made it so much clearer and simple.
Thank You
I just followed these instructions exactly followed them (ive followed many youtube instructions) I just went outside to use it, it worked, then when the lines snap im fucked. Have to open it up and re spool it all over again. I cannot for the life of me set it up where when the line breaks all I have to do is tap the bottom and more comes out. That has never worked for me it only worked when I had it brand new out of the box. 2 years has gone by and everytime i try and the line breaks i just give up. id literally pay someone to spool it for me. im going to try the actual dewalt line and see if that makes any difference but i feel im just wasting my money buying dewalt line

Awesome- very clear and helpful, thanks a lot Jon!
Thanks - very helpful tutorial!
Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you! 🙏
Jon, how much string do u put in each groove? Till full? Recommend mentioning in video.
ruclips.net/video/lV8m0h8-3Kk/видео.html
What is the Length of string for the top and bottom portion of the spool? This would help more.
ruclips.net/video/lV8m0h8-3Kk/видео.html this will answer your question.
Stringing went well after watching. Issue as I use trimmer one side disappeared and keep have to start over stringing steps and I'm bumping more string more often to avoid this still no avail
watch this and don't wind too tight. Wind it loosely. ruclips.net/video/lV8m0h8-3Kk/видео.html
Can I use just one string>? Why 2? I just bought my DeWALT DCST925M1 today. I've just used 1 string trimmers before and only trim grass around the sidewalk, no heavy use on weeds etc. Good video.
I see no reason why you can't. I guess 2 is better than one. But if one is what you want then just wind one. Not sure I would buy a dual string trimmer and just use one line when there are single line trimmers for a fraction of the price of this one. ruclips.net/video/1Fi9he_xPCQ/видео.html
@@JONSDIY Thanks. I had a HART brand 20v single line trimmer I really liked, but the white head (at 3:20 in that video you linked) broke and HART no longer carries that part. Not sure I can jury rig it, so it will be toast. :( I got the DeWALT since the battery will also fit my DeWALT hand drill. I did buy an extra "head" as well this time. That head will be the first thing to break on a trimmer. I'm going to try using one line and see how it works.
@@garlandstyle5797 Yes always bump in the grass. The cement will eventually wear down the head and it also has no give. Yes I mostly stay with Dewalt tools solely because of the compatible batteries. Smart Move.
I sure don't want to be contrary... I'd have good working wrists and hands if I haven't FOUGHT to get the spool to turn where the white nub clears that window, then it takes a heavy duty pair of scissors to slide under the edge and fight another 10 minutes to get the spool to come off. I've thought to spray some deep creep but that shouldn't be necessary...you proved it should turn. It's crazy and a huge turn-off trying to get a job done. I got stuck with the 40V that DeWalt evidently didn't care about it's customers that paid $250 for their brand. Is there any spool that will fit this 40V?
Thanks! This was a big help
Thanks
Thanks my dude
Good tutorial but I am NOT a big fan of replacing the line on a trimmer but I'll do it because I have to. I'd much rather Dewalt make the trimmer spool with the line already professionally installed. I've done this twice and the line always kinks up and won't feed. I end up having to rewind it once or twice before it takes. Lousy way to run a railroad. Not like Dewalt to take the cheap way out but it is what it is. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably buy a Ryobi or one of the brands that makes the spool loaded & ready for bear.
Marilyn/Dennis I feel your pain. But what I have learned is that if you let the string hang down and wrap it with the natural curve(bend) of the string you will not run into the problem you are having. When you go against the natural bend then the string expands inside the spool and twists causing problems. I got this bit of wisdom from Doc Durant himself. :-)
Thanks John. I wound it the same day I posted and only had to rewind it
once. It took. Probably heeded your advice without knowing it lol.
What a lot of people don't know or just don't tell you is ALL DeWalt cordless string trimmers as of June 5th, 2019 come with a much better string trimmer quick load type spool head like this one www.dewalt.com/products/accessories/outdoor-accessories/dewalt-quickload-replacement-spool-head/dwo1dt995 DWO1DT995 DEWALT QuickLoad™ Replacement Spool Head
NOT the POS original one that looks like this www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-Replacement-Head-and-0-080-in-Line-for-Cordless-Battery-Operated-Bump-Feed-String-Grass-Trimmer-Lawn-Edger-DWO1DT980/302366383 The following comment I made above on May 25th, 2019 says "What a POS trimmer head! WT# was the engineer that designed this POS thinking! I bought one of those old style POS heads on the 20V Brushless model & I hate it so much I want to smash TF out of it with a sledgehammer! Now everyone should know why DeWalt changed to a speed loader type trimmer head on the newer string trimmers they make! I bought mine (P/N DCST920P1 on Homedepot.com June 7th, 2018 with the DeWalt DCBL720B 20V Brushless blower in a kit for $199.00 for both w/4Ah 20V battery & charger + tax & free S&H. It is now May 25th, 2019".
You'll spend quadruple the price if they went to prespooled heads. I had a trimmer like that and basically went through one spool each week and they cost about 4 bucks a head. At that price, I could have a whole spool 225 ft in a month. But like you I just bought dewalt brand line for the first time since the original line that came with it, since I had minor issues with non dewalt brand line so figured I'd pay up for it. Just used it yesterday and I have the same problem as you if not worse, every 6' one side or both binds up or breaks off and doesn't spool out and I have to remove the head and lead it back out again and go another 6'. Very frustrating and cannot figure out for the life of me what the problem is, I restring it exactly like the video and it still isn't working.
I’ve tried spoiling loose, spooling tight, following the natural curve, and I only get about five minutes of trimming before the line breaks and I have to remove the spool to unpinch the line - EVERY TIME! What am I doing g wrong?
I just want to through my current trimmer out and get a new one, each time I have to change the string. 😂😂😂
I feel your pain. :-)
Awesome video!
Thanks Keith!
Thank you so much!! Very good video.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH
Is this the same technique for the DeWalt DCST925 20v Max string trimmer? I see some videos regarding the DCST920, but they load about 20" of string and simply fold it in half as they insert the string through the holes to each side of the head and then begin winding it onto the spool. Much different than what you show here. My DCST925 model does not have any tabs to the side, but has the lock indicator as you showed on this model you used. With me having rheumatoid arthritis, removal of the head to string it sure seems very hard at present. Maybe I am doing something very wrong though. This was about the only video which seemed to show how to set up the string changing as it likely should be done on my own model. The manual is worse than a Chinese camera manual in explaining such. It is also a mixture of French and English with the owner having to flip back and forth to see the very small photos which go with the text they are reading. DeWalt isn't all that much better at their website in providing pdf owner manuals, either. The lock indention on my own string trimmer is as black as the actual head, so it makes it difficult to read. Thanks for sharing the video, but I need to know if this works okay on my own model or am I watching the wrong video in trying to load it correctly. Thanks.
completely different
Thanks!!!
Спасибо чувак
Thanks for the video.
Glad it helped.
The restrung string works at first but once I bump it out a bit it gets tangled around itself. Help what am I doing wrong??
It’s sounds like you are winding too tight. Try to wind with just a little bit of tension
Both lines are wound the same direction?
Yes. Wind the top one first. Then the lower. So you can use the pinch slot to hold the line out of the way as you wind the second one.
Thanks. 👍👍
I keep seeing reviews from people that say the spool wont stay on and keeps falling off. Is this just people not understanding how to lock it back into place or is this a legitimate issue?
sinnedam. I think it stems from not originally knowing how to get it to open. And when prying it open they damage the little notches. I can see it being an issue then. I have had mine 6 months now without an issue. But who am I to claim their defaults are not legit? I love mine!
No, it's been a pain for me. It is locked in place as shown in this and other videos ,but then by the will of God, just comes off. So back to locking it in place and again, not staying locked. Very frustrating. Love the tool hate the locking system. My guess, many may come to know this issue do to no fault of their own. But 4th try seems to be working now. This video is very clear on how to install the new string. Well done.
Thanks for the feedback Bill, your comment makes me think I should not whack it on the ground so hard when releasing more string. I thought that the locking mechanism was a bit small and since it was plastic could eventually wear down. A tool should not have to be treated delicately.
So when you re string you go clock wise with both lines?
Yes both lines go in same direction when winding.
@@JONSDIY thanks
Mine had 2 sets of holes
Yes, they updated for 2 sizes of strings. You are now not limited to the .08
I'm using the recommended Dewalt line but can't get it to stay in the hole before winding. Keeps popping out on me. Any tips?
Yes. There are two holes opposite of each other. One is used for non standard dewald string the other for dewald string. Make sure you are using the round hole and not the larger more squarish hole
@@JONSDIY I'm using .080 line but it will not go into the round hole and will not stay in the square hole. WTH? Any idea how to proceed without buying a whole new spool?
Within 30 seconds the line disappears back into the hub. I wind it clockwise, the white thing is locked in place?
I'm having the same problem. Anyone have advice?
I've had nothing but trouble with my new 13" string trimmer. The trimmer won't feed the line correctly except for about 3 min running time. Then it just spins with no line feeding through the holes. I take it apart, and have noticed the line seems pinched, I rewind it per these instructions and have tried others on youtube, reassemble, turn it on... same thing. I wind it loosely, I wind it tightly, same thing.... I have tried the bump feature and it might work- might not- before it spins again with no line feeding through the holes.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've written 2 notes to Dewalt Cust Serv but they have been really slow to respond. Thanks. (I have about 2 weeks before HD return policy expires)
B. I have heard that from the 13" trimmers. But this one is a 40v string trimmer. A much different design than the small 13". Not sure I can offer much help for you as I have never owned the 13" and the spools are not very similar.
You should inform how much string the trimmer holds
Why? who cares how much it holds? Wind it until its full. Follow the instructions and don't waste your time cutting specific sizes individually.
fucking thaaank you, every other video i see has the other style of bump rotor. hard to find this one for some reason!
Can u show which hole u put into cause mine keep getting tangle
Billy, at 00:36 I show the holes, are these the ones your referring to? (the feed holes before winding) Make sure you wind in the right direction.
@@JONSDIY ya there a total of 4 so do use both in the same area or do u one on the opposite
@@patrat1990 I used the same on the same side.
@@JONSDIY ok thanks
How much of a line you cut?
didn't measure out line. I wound until it was full then I cut.
Awesome video! But why are you wearing shorts! Ouch!
Um it’s freaking hot. 😁
