    For the first time in my life, I made this apple butter. It was AMAZING!!! I left out the cloves since I am not a fan of cloves. I removed the core and I left the skins on. When it was finished I used my immersion blender and it totally dissolved the apple peels. It was so easy. I will be making a lot more soon.

    Did you do water bath outside? How did you heat it up and keep it up to boiling?

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  3 года назад

      We did the water bath on our stovetop inside our kitchen. Sometimes we do use a propane burner outside to avoid unnecessarily heating up our house in the middle of summer. Bring it to a boil, and then maintain a boil for the entire canning session.

    How any minutes in the water bath? We’re those 1/2 pint jars?

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  4 года назад

      I used 8 ounce jelly jars. I always recommend you consult a canning guide for the exact times on water bath canning.

    Question what if an instant pot isn't available in my kitchen. Any other options?

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  5 лет назад +1

      You can easily make it on the stovetop. Just the cook time would likely change (likely 2-3 hours), and you'll have to stir it occasionally, so it doesn't scorch. Also, one more note... You wouldn't need to add water for the stovetop. My mom makes apple butter all the time on her stove, and it is delicious.

      @@MelLockcuff thank you. 2-3 hours is too long. I'll have to invest in an instant pot. Enjoy your weekend

    Great video! I want to start canning but read about botulism.... How safe is canning if I live in San Diego when it can get pretty hot in summer?

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so much! It gets pretty hot here in Arkansas too. Botulism is a scary thing, but I'd recommend getting a canning manual like the Ball Blue Book or similar; you might even take some classes if you have a local extension office you can contact; sometimes they'll offer classes on canning and food preservation so you can get hands on experience.

    What is the purpose of the final water bath? And how long is it good for?

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  3 года назад +1

      Hey Jess, the water bath was used to can and preserve the apple butter. I highly recommend checking out a Ball canning guide for more info on canning apple butter, but it's generally recommended to keep it in the boiling water bath for 10-20 minutes for quarts or 5-15 minutes for pints, all depending on your altitude.

    Is molasses mandatory ? Is it mostly for flavoring ?

    • @MelLockcuff

    Can we leave the sugar out?

    • @MelLockcuff
      @MelLockcuff  Год назад +1

      I'm not sure how good that would taste, as I have never made it without sugar! Most recipes I've found online are using sugar substitutes, like Splenda, at the very least.
