- You only need four ingredients to make my flavorful, homemade Applesauce Recipe. This super simple applesauce recipe uses just one pot and finishes in less than an hour.
Recipe: sugarspunrun.com/applesauce-r...
Ingredients
3 lbs apples, peeled, cored, and diced (I recommend using a crisp, sweet apple like Fuji, Honeycrisp, Gala, Pink Lady, or Cortland.) Weigh before peeling/coring apples. (1.4kg)
1 cup water (236ml)
3 Tablespoons granulated sugar¹ (38g)
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
2 cinnamon sticks² (optional, see note to use ground cinnamon)

Instructions
00:00 Introduction
00:18 Combine apples, water, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon sticks in a large pot on the stovetop. Stir to combine.
02:28 Turn stovetop heat to medium and bring mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium/low, cover with lid, and continue to cook for 20-30 minutes, checking/stirring once or twice to make sure the heat is not too high and apples are not burning to the bottom of the pot.
03:34 Cook until apples are completely soft and tender when pierced with a fork (they should give easily to the fork and offer no resistance).
04:10 Remove from heat and carefully remove cinnamon sticks. Mash with a potato masher (for chunkier applesauce) or blend with an immersion blender until smooth (for a smoother applesauce). You may also transfer the apples to a blender and puree until smooth if you don’t have an immersion blender.
If applesauce is too watery for your liking you can return to the stovetop and cook over medium/low heat, stirring occasionally, until the water is reduced and mixture is the desired consistency.
05:30 Allow to cool and then serve!
Notes
¹Sugar
I recommend using the amount listed, but you may reduce or even omit the sugar (if you have very sweet, flavorful apples) or increase it up to 4 Tablespoons or even more if you are using particularly tart apples. Brown sugar (light or dark), honey, or maple syrup may be substituted for the sugar but each will impart their own flavor into the applesauce.
²Cinnamon
I like to use cinnamon sticks for a subtle cinnamon-flavored applesauce. You may omit if you do not like the flavor. If you do not have cinnamon sticks but want the flavor, stir in ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon after pureeing/mashing the applesauce.
Scaling the recipe
This recipe may be reduced in half or doubled or even tripled (if you have a pot that’s large enough). I usually only add an additional ½ cup (113ml) of water for every additional 3 lbs (1.4kg) of apples that I use.
Storing
Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Applesauce may also be stored in the freezer for 6 months or longer, just use an airtight container, preferably a plastic bag that you can remove the air from. To defrost I thaw in the fridge overnight. While this recipe may be canned, I have not personally canned it and don’t feel comfortable advising on the specifics of how to do so.

I am 39 years old and have never made homemade applesauce, until I made this recipe. I will never buy store-bought, again! I used an immersion blender for mine, and it turned out so smooth and almost creamy, if that makes sense. Delicious!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much! :)
Im exchanging apples for pears, because I have a pear tree 🌳
Ooo sounds great!
Oh I'm so Jelly 😳
Lucky you to have a pear tree! Yum!
Thank you....this turned out great for my first time making it. I had to use Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnadust in place of sugar and cinnamon; surprisingly it made it pop. Thank you for this video. It was one of the easiest to follow.😊😊👍🏾
I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
You should have zillions of followers!!! Every recipe I have tried has been absolutely amazing and LOVED by my whole family!! You’ve made me quite popular lol..thank you so much for your content!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you've enjoyed everything 😊
Me and my woman just came across a half of bushel of free apples. Going to slice and vacume seal some for freezer for later. Wanted to make applesauce and YOU just showed us how! Gonna give it a whirl. Thank you!
You're welcome! Enjoy! :)
I cook my apples in a 6qt. pot filled half way with water, tsp., of cinnamon, tbsp., of brown sugar & apples, after they've cooked, I have apple like cider/juice in my pot. I then wait for them to cool and place my apples in a food processor, with 7 apples it usually makes 48-58 oz., of Applesauce. Smack-a-licious!!! 🍎😋🍏 and the Apple like Cider/juice is good too!!! 😃👍
Sounds delicious! :)
Very nice apple purée 🍎🍏
Applesauce is the bomb, makes your taste buds sing a song.
I usually eat a little bit of apple sauce with my medication in the morning but today I randomly thought "What if, I make the applesauce instead of buying it?" I'm going to try this out! Thank you!
It's so much better than store bought! I hope you love it! :)
You can make ACV with the scrapes!
I thought making applesauce was really difficult but seeing this simple easy recipe and how you did it. I’m definitely going to make this soon. With and without chucks. But I’m going to use my blender which I haven’t not ONCE used (2010-2011) haha

I always do my applesauce in the crockpot and have an easy tip if you're not a proficient apple peeler. I use one of the little devices that cuts the apples into eight pieces and removes the core. The slices are just the right size to peel with a single swipe of a paring knife. Snap it in half, throw it in the pot, and peel the next slice. I can do an apple a minute this way! I may have to scoop a bit of the seed pod out of the section but that only takes seconds. Since it's going to get mashed up, I don't worry about dicing into pieces.
That's a great tip! Thank you for sharing! :)
Thanks! It works well for pies, too. The wedges are easy to handle and can be turned into nice, uniform slices. I tried using my mandolin, but it wasn't really any faster. I have some mobility issues, so shortcuts like this are a must!@@SugarSpunRun
@@SugarSpunRunhave you ever done them in an instant pot ?
Thank you for time
You’re welcome! Enjoy! 😊
Thank you for the quick and easy to follow video! Except I'll be using ceylon cinnamon, and either maple syrup or honey for the sweet
I hope you love it! :)
Thank you! Where can I find the jars that you used?
How lkng does it keep Thanks
yep, applesauce...soooo easy. think mashed potatoes without butter and cream. same method. except I don't add water because the apples make their own juice. instead I use orange juice for liquid while the apples are cooking down. Once I figured THAT out I stumbled upon a recipe for apple butter...just applesauce reduced and most of the liquid evaporated.
Love apple sauce thank you for your recipe QUESTION….how long can you keep this apple sauce ?
Can you store it in a cool place ?
Once the lid is tightly done can you keep it for months ?
Thank you so much 😊 in advance🥰 and YES I do hope you reach 1000000 views buonna fortuna 💗
YOU ARE VERY GOOD 👍
Great questions! I actually cover this information at the very bottom of my blog post. I talk about canning, freezing, or just keeping the applesauce in a jar. :)
@@SugarSpunRun thank you so much 😊
Hello sam iam a really big fan of your videos you are so talented is there any way you can make a video on an easy fried pecan pie and fried peach pies please the ones in the magazines make them very complicated thankyou
Hmmm I will definitely look into making them. They sound tasty. 😊
@@SugarSpunRun thankyou
How long will this stay good to eat in the fridge 😮
Can u drain water from the applesauce?
Could you use honey as a sweetener? Just out of curiosity as I have some nice honey I was gifted and have been wanting to use. :)
So, my husband grew up with this homemade applesauce that he says was super smooth and runny/thin. Is there a way to get somewhat thinner results? I figured add more water but I figured it cannot hurt to ask, because there could be other ways. Lol
How long will it stay fresh like this? Im new and trying to learn, thank you!
It will be good in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. :)
@@SugarSpunRun , Thank you! Can it be stored unrefrigerated if its not been opened
? Thanks fo much!
can we grind or blend the peeled apple before cooking ?? since it would be easy to cook
I think that could work.
What to use apple source for?
Eating with a spoon! ;)
Does anyone know how long the apple sauce will stay good for in fridge?
If you want to add that little something to make it oh so special, I think, is to add a dash of Chinese 5-spice.
Interesting. I'll have to try that sometime. :)
How long can we store them in the fridge? My baby loves apple sauce
You can store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks! Enjoy!
Could we put this applesauce on top of toast?
It might make your toast a bit soggy if you don't eat it quickly.
@@SugarSpunRun oh okay, I will try to make it for a recipe
How long does this last in the fridge?
Up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. :)
How is this good for in the fridge?
It is good in the refrigerator in a sealed jar for up to 2 weeks. :)
Thank you so much ❤
👍
How long can we store it in the fridge
In a sealed container in the refrigerator it will be good for 2 weeks. If you go through the process of canning it, it can last much longer. :)
Can you make a video how to can it right after it’s made? 🤔 please!
Unfortunately I do not have much experience with canning, but I think that would be a great video to add to my repertoire. Thank you for the suggestion. :)
THAT BLENDER. WHAT?!?!?!?!
I use it a lot! I love it! I actually link to it in the description. :)
@@SugarSpunRunyeah I'm gonna buy that. I thought it would be a lot more money that. I've never even heard of something like that
That that that I gotta watch the thats
What must one pair it with?
Honestly, we just eat it plain all the time. But there’s nothing wrong with pairing it with something if you’d like, too!
Is it 3 pounds of apples BEFORE they are peeled and cored or after?
Before. :)
@@SugarSpunRun -- Thanks!!
Does small apple cuts give you less apple sauce?
I suggest cutting them into small pieces for even cooking and a quicker recipe! You'll still get the same amount with small pieces 😊
How long does this keep?
It should be good for about a week in the refrigerator in an air tight container. Longer if you can it. :)
Do I have to remove the skin of the apple? Can’t I leave them on?
If you don't, you will have tough bits of peel in finished product 😕
@@SugarSpunRun I made some today and I was too lazy to peel the apples. After cooking the apples I put them in my vitamix blender. What delicious applesauce as smooth as silk! 💕
Could you do this in a crockpot?
That should work. :)
i love you
Thku hunney
The recipe came out really good, but I was advised not to use sugar since this is being made for babies
You can absolutely leave the sugar out :)
You don’t need to peel apples and you don’t need an immersion blender.
This is how I do it
I don’t need to peel the apples it’s night so I could just eat them
shitting my pants hope this helps
Looks a little too watery
I think it’s the perfect consistency but if you like it thicker just cook a bit longer til you are happy with it :)
Never, ever peel apples!! 🤦🏻♂️
Why not?
