It's brutal playing as John. You start RDR2 with a fresh view, knowing what happens in RDR1, and a new character and outlook with Arthur as your new protagonist. It ends up with the same brutal and sad ending, just like in RDR1. Then they put you back into John's shoes, to give you a chance to exact revenge. But once that's done, you're back at the start of RDR1... and you're doomed. Again.

After the gang got disbanded and Arthur dying, I thought it literally cannot get any better. Then when we finally play as John, we partially reunite the old gang and I started feeling better. When they build a new home, I even felt somewhat happy for them. Then when they killed Micah, I knew that all loose ends were tied and I was happy. With this playing in the credits, I couldn’t help but smile. I almost forgot about the first game and thought that John and his family would live a happy life together. Then they showed Ross, and I realized there is no happy ending. And I became sad again. Thanks Rockstar.
Unfortunately, John should have listened to Arthur: run without looking back. He looked back, looked at Micah, and avenged Arthur's death and the gang's disbandement, but that eventually led to John's death, because, just like Arthur said: revenge is a fool's game.

Having had 345 horses die on me by that point, most because they were in the same State as a train, I was kinda thinking, Is this sarcastic? Is it breaking the fourth wall?
I used the white Arabian for that mission because I already knew that the horse died, so before that I took my main horse, we rode a long way together towards the stable and sold it so that he would not die in the mission
Penguin Guy I'm still struggling to get into the groove of playing as John. I've finished the game and everything but when I try to explore, fish, create etc with John it doesn't feel right and I can't play for as long. But I can do the same things with Arthur for much longer and it feels nicer. I know that's weird. I love John too but Arthur is like a friend
Fun Fact, Roger Clark (Arthurs Voice Actor) was asked to play Mary in that scene because she was not available, so he was asked to stand in front of his grave looking sad.
Honestly this is the best song they could have put in the credits. It makes you feel sad and happy at the same time, its hard to explain. Its perfectly tells the storie of emotions you went trew. You feel sad because of arthur. You are happy John is married. But you realize it will be over bye the time of rdr1. Your also happy to have played and finished this amazing game. Your sad because finished the game. That there is no more storie content to play. Honestly perfect song for the credits.
It’s sad because there really is no happy ending at all. Arthur told John not to look back and he should have listened and left Micah alone. If he did he would have lived peacefully with his family
@@smoker5989 I think (and sorry for my poor english) so, my think, Sadie just looking up to Arthur. At the Adler Ranch, Micah going crazy (just usual), but Arthur and Dutch saving her. After some chapter, Sadie discover Dutch getting bullshitting the gang, with conspirationing vith Micah, so Sadie's best hope is Arthur. Arthur saying in the Beaver Hollow chapter: "We need each other" or something. Both know, Micah is playing with Dutch, but the two is out of power to evade the catastrofe. Arthur's prime motivation is save the woman and Jack (and Marston). Sadie's prime motivation is revenge on the O'Driscoll Boys. For Arthur's helping the wipe out the O'Driscoll Boys, Sadie worn loyalty to Arthur and his friends.
marcos paredes Yes. Think about it, John has killed many many people. I understand that you like him I like him too, but in real life, would you let a murderer and outlaw run away from his mistakes? I’m sorry but that’s not how it works. But this is just a game so yeah.
Arthur isn’t exactly a “good guy” though, as he is a ruthless outlaw, killer and a thief. He knows this and he doesn’t want people to believe he’s a pure-at-heart hero or anything to that extent, it’s just like Joel Miller from TLOU.
Man, I miss Arthur like he was one of the closest friends I ever had. I doubted Rockstar could surpass the story of RDR 1 and John Marston. But they did. The bastards did it.
John Smith I know the feeling... when he died, it felt like a life-long friend died and took a little part of me with them. Who would have thought a video game could make me cry so damn hard. rip AM

what's wrong with it being a video game? it tells a compelling story the same way cartoons and comics books can, despite many people's unfortunate beliefs.
@@aurelien5747 well no they're not actually heroes in the literal sense as they're fictional characters. With that being said, they're the heroes of the story and their stories are actually both relatable and teach valid lessons that one could apply in the real world. Take Arthur Morgan for example. You could say he's a good example of an honorable man stuck in a tough place.
I hate how I got so attached to my horse and I truly loved him. He was with me from after the tutorial and when arthur said "thank you" My heart fucking broke. That shows how much shire (I mamed my horse that rven tho its a breed) meant not just to me but to arthur

This song touched my heart, it symbolizes Arthur’s departure from this world, as he accepts peace. And a passing of the torch for John to leave the “cruel world” of being in a gang, to start a new family life.
But this song wasn't played when Arthur died? It was playing after John Marston leaves Pronghorn Ranch. How does it symbolize Arthurs death? Or does it play at the end of the epilogue?
@@iXRelaxx666lemao I'm certain it plays during the credits at the end of the epilogue, maybe it plays when leaving Pronghorn, but I don't recall hearing it before the epilogue.
I cried when Hosea died him Charles and Lenny were my favorites which is I am guessing why they died also I thought I liked Javier until he showed his true colors and Bill was just a coward that made me have to fight Tommy that was scary I thought I was going to lose because Tommy just punched my blocks and was almost untouchable (Charles didn’t die but you know what I meant)
The game that taught me the most about life and personal relationships, gave me a deeper insight into what true honor is, and reminded me what it meant to keep living even if it's just for others. This song in particular always hits.
It's my firm belief the Red Dead series is about the vicious cycle of violence. Those who live by the gun die by the gun, and try as he did, John couldn't stop Jack from following in his fathers' bloodied footsteps. He just had to have his revenge against Ross, and with that, the cycle continued unabated. Sadly, for Arthur, John, and then Jack, it could, and can, only end one way. Cruel, cruel world.
They probably couldn't track Jack tho. He didn't tell his name to anyone, he just came, ask some fellers where's Ross and went on his way. Ross' body was probably washed down stream, which means that if they don't find the body they could assume a hunting accident. Ross was duck hunting, so it makes sense he'll have to fire a few shots. Nobody would guess it's Jack.
And I mean, if GTA and Red Dead Redemption have even the slightest of cannonical connections, it would be hard to argue Jack became something much more illegal than a writer. I find it highly unlikely that Jack continued gun-slinging after killing Ross
RDR2 was a masterpiece. It's one of the few times in gaming that I've actually felt a connection to the gang members, and the character progression for Arthur and the gang was unlike any other I've seen. The 60+ hour campaign was perfect to allow you plenty of opportunities to sit and the camp and sing songs, play dominoes, hear dialogue and in general have a great time with the gang, all the while building a brilliant story, epic moments and emotion! Rockstar, you did it once again and unbelievably you exceeded RDR1 in my opinion. That is no easy achievement. It feels so refreshing to have actually played a game worth £60 again instead of these DLC/microtransaction bullshit titles!
I have no doubt guys, I will be doing another playthrough personally of RDR2 very soon. Such a beautiful game, unlike anything I've played that's how good it is! So much content another playthrough would do well to take it all in properly this time. What about yous all? Arthur Morgan and john were absolute legends to play!
I played rdr1 before rdr2. When this song played, it hits me hard, a complicated feeling, happy and sad at same time. A very short happy time of John. My husband never know why I cry too many times when I played this game.
I like how Arthurs may I stand unshaken symbolizes his decent, and how his body is deteriorating from the TB and the steady decline of the gang, and John's song is about his regrets about the past and how he is trying to make everything better for him and his family.
Truth but what's sadder is he's conflicted when the song plays for the first time it's when Abilgial an Jack have just left and he's pretending to be something he isn't. He wants his family to be happy but he's finding it hard to sacrifice who he is for that so the song plays at the perfect time
This song honestly means everything to me. When I’m at my lowest of my low’s I play it to remind me that no matter what, I put my heart and soul and effort into everything I did in life. I tried at all times for everything I did as hard as I possibly could. And when I’m stressed out or just feeling flat out depressed and like I shouldn’t exist this song just helps me out so damn much.
No other game has taught me so much about human emotion and life. No other game has instilled so much emotion in me. When you get the game your expecting rooting tooting shooting cowboys. In the end you leave with tears in your eyes, and lessons about life. Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t just a video game it’s a masterpiece. No other game will win my heart over more than this game. When you first buy the game you think it’s a bit overpriced, but you leave thinking you would’ve payed 5 times the amount for an experience like that. Rockstar really outdid themselves.
FlownXp and Marstons redemption was cleaning up the betrayal of the van der linde gang that caused so much death and destruction. His son jack ended the cycle by killing agent Ross.

I know its just a game but for me it was more than just a game. It was something that Will stick with me years to come. Thank you Rockstar ❤️
Arthur Morgan is more real and human than most people I swear. Like I constantly forget that he’s a fictional character. Also love this song btw. Everything about this game is just amazing.
Nah, the thing with him is that you actually see and somewhat experience what he goes through. With other people you don't see or completely experienced what they went through. Don't compare fiction to reality.
@IDK MY NAME I'm a movie buff and book aficionado. And I still agree with him: Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of my favorite works of art of all time. The story is so beautiful and immersive that it really inspired me. Unlike movies and books, where you are the narrative viewer, here you play the role of one of the best characters ever created.
@IDK MY NAME I... actually agree with you, but not on some points. Arthur does achieve redemption in both endings, but how he does it is the big difference and it's what matters when considering his legacy in the story. Arthur can achieve redemption through death or love depending on his honor at the end of the game - this is the freedom the game gives you regarding the narrative. The player gets to decide if Arthur dies a hero or as, simply, an outlaw. The player gets to determine how the other characters of the world interact with him or remember him in the epilogue. Arthur as a character is _yours_, and that is something a movie or book cannot give you.

I managed to get through Arthur's end without crying, then as John in Epilogue 1 I opened the journal and saw Arthur's farewell messages to the remaining members of the gang and that was it :'(
Here are the lyrics. Cruel cruel world, must I go on Cruel cruel world I'm moving on I've been living too fast, I've been living too wrong Cruel cruel world I'm gone This big old world, sure got me running round Heard a voice, it told me settle down With the moonlight as my guide, and this feeling deep inside I know now that I'm homeward bound As I wonder through the pines the whispers they tell, of the many before me who tried and fell Seeking fortune and ways, to get to glory days Looking for a place in this old world Cruel cruel world, must I go on Cruel cruel world I'm moving on I've been living too fast, I've been living too wrong Cruel cruel world I'm gone Desert road, desert plain I have seen, so much pain Now I see into the eyes of a girl No more, no more, cruel world On a dusty trail I saw a vapour lie Was it mirage, don't know but it seemed right I felt mission I felt trust, I knew then that I must Go to her, away from this cruel world Cruel cruel world, must I go on Cruel cruel world I'm moving on I've been living too fast, I've been living too wrong Cruel cruel world I'm gone Cruel cruel world I'm gone
Sadly, John was forced to come back to that cruel world to save his family, then Jack made the choice to go to that cruel world by killing Edgar Ross, hopefully it was canon that he made peace and wrote that novel on GTA 5.
While I do feel for Arthur and John and truly sad endings for them make no mistake honestly how else could it end for them? While yes they were good men in the end let’s not forget Arthur and John did commit some serious crimes during their lifetime and there is no free pass from that they were either headed to jail or to the gallows as no law enforcement was ever going to stop looking for them
When I finished the epilogue, when I heard this song and seeing the credits, I just burst into tears knowing it was over, this was one of the best games I have never played.
May I (Unshaken): "The pines, they often whisper. They whisper what no tongue can tell." Cruel Cruel World: "As I wander through the pines, the whisperings they tell, of the many before me who tried and fell."

Sadly i dont think a rdr3 would work i mean the story is basically done unless they do a prequel of a prequel id be more happy with a rdr1 remake with more elements of rdr2 than a 3rd game
Romario H there’s so many details to scattered about the game. Mainly hardships of people like immigrants, the german family, Wrobel the native Americans. At the end with rain falls and an eagle flying over is so symbolic of the hardships they endured. Amazing game
Jahseh Onfroy I wish Arthur didn’t get TB and him and Sadie eloped to the south together to be ranchers. There was chemistry between them. Then in RDR1 John wasn’t told to hunt them because they’re whereabouts was unknown. But the idea is the redemption for Arthur was death due to all the harm he caused, especially when he got TB off the man who borrowed money of Leopold Strauss in Chapter 2. It’s a cruel world.
As the credits rolled, so did my tears. Wife has been upset with me playing RDR2 too much lately. As she saw me in tears, she came over and sat next to me, hugging me. "So how did the game end?" She asks. Overcome by emotion I reply: "I'll tell you later." And we sat there watching the credits roll.

What about Red Harlow?

Best game ever, maybe the best movie ever, almost the best book ever. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not just a game, it’s work of art
@IDK MY NAME You choose if you want to die with honor or die dishonored. I think this is the most important matter, and we control it.
IDK MY NAME you do not get redemption if you choose the bad ending.
IDK MY NAME I didn’t know getting shot in the face after you said damn us both was redeeming.
Red Dead Redemption Is One Of The Saddest Tragedies Ever Written.

Cruel, Cruel world indeed. A fitting song, knowing what happens in the first game.
And in this one...
GalaxyDragon This game too.
I cried when my horse died it sure is a cruel world.
Me too
This version: smooth vocals and peaceful= Arthur
Willie version: upbeat and hopeful= John
Ain't u got a cult to run?
That is very truthful and I am glad I wasn't the only one that tought this.
Is Willie's version in the game too?
@@prosimian Yes. Willie's version plays in the epilogue, while this version plays in the credits
Can anybody confirm if this version is sung by Josh Homme? If so, is it released anywhere?
May I (Unshaken): "The pines, they often whisper. They whisper what no tongue can tell."
Cruel Cruel World: "As I wander through the pines, the whisperings they tell, of the many before me who tried and fell."
And in the game you can actually hear whispering in some forests. RDR2 is a God-given gift.
I thought it said “They whisper, but don’t drunk and tell” and always got reminded of Lenny and how he wouldn’t drunk and tell haha

This game is a fuckin masterpiece. To hell with GTA 6 do the world a favor and make Red Dead Redemption 3
Well, without Dan houser (the main writer and one of the founders of the company) it's very improbable see another great story like this one, maybe a story like GtaV is more probable, a shame
Nah I would want gta 6 to come out first. Not because I like gta more hell no rdr fan for life. But the reason is because I don't want rdr3 rushed and it coming out bad
@@PILLS__BTW Preach.
@@mmm8494 But you know, Dan Houser isn't only person who made R* Games. There are still dozens of people there associated with the series for years.
Sadly i dont think a rdr3 would work i mean the story is basically done unless they do a prequel of a prequel id be more happy with a rdr1 remake with more elements of rdr2 than a 3rd game
“There’s a good man within you but he’s wrestling with a giant”
That ride back to beaver’s hollow hits deep
Romario H there’s so many details to scattered about the game. Mainly hardships of people like immigrants, the german family, Wrobel the native Americans. At the end with rain falls and an eagle flying over is so symbolic of the hardships they endured. Amazing game
'You know there ain't enough kindness in the world, that's for sure.'
I cried so hard on that scene, never happened to me in any video game or any movies, this game is easily going down in history.
Arthur my friend, you are a hero. Rest in peace.
so true
RIP
They shouldnt of killed him. And to know by the end of rdr1 the only living man is jack marston. Wonder what happened to charles and sadie though.
Oh yes he is a hero from RDR2
Everyone came here after finishing the game because I know I did 👋
Alex M. I wish we could combine these two emojis 😔🤠 to how I’m sad but still a cowboy

LOL you bet. Im crying.
Whenever I hear this song, it feels as if the lyrics were written especially for Arthur. Every verse fits with his life and his end.
They were written for John actually.
When he said "I've been living too fast, I've been living too wrong" it hit me a little hard
You know what’s sadder than this song, the fact that they picked up Strauss and he didn’t talk, and died in a cell

I'm Afraid..."
Most honest, heartbreaking, and real moment in video games characters history.
One of the best games ever made.
I cried too, Me too...
This was the only game where I sat and watched the credits out of pure respect for the people who made this masterpeace also I only got to read half of them as the first half of the credits were just me crying
I sat and watched all of it. A lot of people dedicated a lot of time to a single game, and I'm glad they did cause this is one of my favourite games.
