2019 was the worst snow Seattle had seen in fifty years. I live in a suburb a couple of minutes out of town. I was snowed in for four or five days. Eventually, I got cabin fever and walked to town.
And then 2022-2023 arrived! Been here 35 years and this was the first time I can remember the entire transit system completely shutting down. Not just going to “emergency snow network,” but absolutely zero transit whatsoever because the ice prevented them from even getting the buses out of their barns altogether.
Quite a few cameras seem to be working here but when you look at their website it says, "camera unavailable" "under maintenance" which it says most of the time for the same camera's but they are working. They choose to not have them working on a regular basis for some reason.
Yeah, the cameras are weird. Also, sometimes the photo says "unavailable" but when you click on the video, it plays. Not sure what's going on. Thanks for watching!
I’m not from wa state but moved here about 4 years and in Seattle drivers defense there are a crap load of hills. Like everywhere ... but wa state drivers do driver crazy too. 🤷🏽♀️
From what I've seen over the years not enough people are smart enough to invest in studded tires. It's not enough to have winter tires because they don't cut through the ice and dig in.
Seattle, given the rarity of snowy conditions that last this long, you re forgiven. However, in the rest of the country where winter means snow and ice every year, it is unbelievable that thousands of drivers refuse to prepare, and thus these scenes occur with regularity. Until the M & S rating is removed from 3 season tires, winter traffic camera entertainment will continue.
@@chriscorbray4457 doesn't matter, he spoke with precision about preparedness. That tells me he uses more than 2 brain cells (the quantity of which is the norm for the average American).
@Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump Not at all. It helps, but it's almost not necessary. A lot of the roads in Sweden are untreated. And even more roads are treated first after several hours or days, and even then it's okay with snow and ice on the roads. I have driven on highways with 10 cm of snow on, with FWD. Without ANY problem. Yesterday it was rain and above 0 degree C and during the evening it went down below 0 and started snowing and was blowing a Lot so it was sometimes hard to see even where the road were, and i still had NO problem getting home (smaller roads and larger one like highways). I have at least! 200.000 km behind the wheel in all kind of weathers and has Never had any problems. Yes, it takes a bit longer to get to the destination when it's snowing and blowing like crazy and you don't see where the road are but it still works. Never stuck. Never slid off. Nothing. But, i always use the best rated tires (summer tires during summer and winter tires during winter) and i always make sure i switch to winter tires before it gets slippery (there are weather forecasts you know...).
I've seen plenty of trucks with mudders spin too. Reason is huge mud tires are not good for snow on roads. The idea is for the tire to dig into the snow and hit ground. Mudders float on top of the snow and spin. Good for mud and sand, bad for snowy roads.
@Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump that happened to my atv tires, clogged with mud and got so stuck it took 2 excavators to get it out. First one got stuck as well lol. Snow tires usually have pretty aggressive looking tread, I believe they are designed to cut through the snow and not get clogged up with any. I drive a truck and with nice snow tires and 4x4 I've never slipped, nevermind get stuck. Live in the North.
@Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump The look isn't everything. The most important bit is the rubber compound. And, of course, the design of the tire, especially when it comes to studless.
I remember this so clearly because i was living on bainbridge island and worked near 4th & lucile, got to seattle at 6 on Monday morning and no one knew what was going on with any buses, light rail still ran but eventually i just gave up and went home after making it to the sodo station and still finding no buses.
Oof, yeah, our busses do not do well in the snow. I'll always remember the snow in 2008, when my dad got stuck on a bus for over 8 hours because a jackknifed truck was blocking I5 😬
Vehicles slide on ice and snow everywhere they happen in the entire world. That includes Canada, Russia, Europe, the USA - everywhere. And that's true even in the places where it occurs regularly every winter.

Like you pointed out in your nice video you have to make changes for the conditions . Please keep making these videos
True. We are the worst. But, what people don’t know is we live at the freezing temperature in times snow falls. It melts in the day and freezes at night. They ARE NOT driving in snow! They are driving on sheets of ice. Not snow. We can deal with that. Our terror of snow comes from never seeing’s a snowplow at work.
98% of the time its totally normal to see Seattle drivers carpooling with Iguanas, Alpacas, Llamas, Goats, cats, cows, Roosters, and occasionally chickens on peoples heads
Seattle has to be one of the worst places for stuff like this to happen. It's full of hills and usually only gets a few inches of snow per year. So yeah, no one knows how to drive in the snow and they aren't equipped with the proper tires. I was waiting at a bus stop next to an intersection on a hill in Port Angeles during this weather and watched cars stopped by the light going uphill slide to the shoulder. The road didn't go straight up the hill at that point otherwise they would've slid right back down.
do people not use a separate set of snow tires? im in a snow free climate so i dont know but i always assumed/was told people had a separate set for winter, or is it that bad WITH snow tires
Seattle does not get snow very often. Most people that love there use the same tires all year and the few times it does snow there this happens. In other areas that get snow more often, people do use winter tires in winter and regular tires the rest of the year.
They did have plows with sand and salt ready. They prioritized "primary" roads, the "secondary", but as soon as the cleared a path it snowed again, and the "tertiary" roads never got a chance. Remember - this only happens to us every few years ago, so they don't spend a lot on plows and such
It was 3 or 4 years ago that I borrowed the company van to get home rather than my bicycle. After 5 hours, I left it in a side street, and walked up the last hill. It was about 2 hours in that I started wishing I'd taken the bike. *IT* had studded tires, it might have been uncomfortable, but I would have been home by then.
How is it that I can deal with snow driving a lifted 4x4 truck with no ABS or traction control on shitty Wal-Mart Dextero tires? I've spun out enough times to know how to steer out of a slide without losing speed, not good for the steering hardware though since it involves rapidly slamming the wheel to both locks while using the accelerator and brake simultaneously to counteract the swing, it's a slow process, but it works if done right, getting new tires, wheels, transmission, and rear differential before too long as well as an ABS module if I can find a cheap working one
A+ for Washington State driving on snow D - For George driving on snow and they get it more often You Southerners need to watch and take some notes don't see any of them stranded on the interstate for 36 hours .
just went through it again the last part of December...probably even worse. to be fair, the snow comes down wet, then freezes, with more snow on top, so you have snow covered ice which is the worst. on the other hand, there's a lot of new arrivals in the Seattle area from homes where they have no experience in winter driving or driving at all
why don't some people understand that summer tires or all-season tires don't work so well on snow and ice. And have to drive when the snow conditions don't allow it
In Canada it is one of the great challenges. Snow tires make a big difference. If we get early snow/ice we get caught without snow tires on and go through this too. Stay safe but enjoy the simple spin outs.
yup i live in seattle and use snow tires. there is no hill that i can’t go to. funny thing is people don’t realize that i have snow tires and try to follow me up hills and end up getting stuck wondering how i made it up or down.
Look, in our defense: we never seem to get nice, normal snow. We get this compacted gray sludge that has about the same color and consistency as wet cement. Oh, and it’s always layered over ice. ALWAYS. The real issue isn’t even the snow, it’s the damn ice! Because there’s always ice, especially when it snows, and it likes to freeze crystal clear so you’ll never see it in time to avoid it.
WHEN DEALING WITH SNOW, OR ICE, THE TWO WORSE THINGS YOU COULD DO IS SLAM ON THE BRAKES, OR GUN IT.IT SEEMS BOTH OF THESE ARE BEING DONE AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Me too! I'm not sure why she decided that it was better to abandon her car and walk up the hill instead, instead of waiting for SDOT or someone else to help get her out. It's not like they were in the middle of nowhere...
YES because her back is towards the direction of oncoming traffic; if a car comes, she won't see it coming and won't move over or jump out of the way. She should be walking on the other side of the median facing the direction of any possible oncoming traffic.
I'm betting cash on ignorance. I really wonder what percentage of us Americans know what a bald tire is. Edit: looked it up. 1 in ever 3 drivers in a study didn't know how to check the condition of their tires. N I C E.
because you need to make a lot of money to live in Seattle.. and most people don't know they have crappy tires till this happens. This kind of snow happens every 5 to 10 years. in between that, A. S. tires are more than adequate to drive here.
Wet snow are slick as snot. There's not much you can do AND you HAVE to get work AND there are hills everywhere! SO, don't laugh until you've driven in it!! Sighed: A Seattlite
Trade in that ever so wonderful Prius and invest in either a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive rig and actually go drive in the snow. Theres a dang mountain range not more than an hour away that people could go and practice in but most don’t!
Jeep Wrangler snow plow with chains on all four wheels, never did get stuck, but wrangler was in 4 wheel drive 100% of the time. People should just stay home. Advertised 4X4 pick up and delivery to the grocery store for free, property managers failed to provide snow removal or abatement of ice. Charged $500 an hour for snow plow services.
Y'all had better think about getting snow tires because this isn't going to stop happening. Winter tires are good not only for snow and ice but also have better grip in cool temperatures.

The best of this video is DEFINITELY the music...
2019 was the worst snow Seattle had seen in fifty years. I live in a suburb a couple of minutes out of town. I was snowed in for four or five days. Eventually, I got cabin fever and walked to town.
I don't know about 50 years - I remember a bad one in '08 (I think?) - but this was definitely more than we usually get!
the problem is not the hills or the snow
but bad Tires on cars that needs good Winter Tires
@@ti0039a340 my cars a year old !!! I’m just a shitty driver 😫😫😫
@@amberbartlett5067 i doubt you have winter tires equipped on your car so no you are not a bad driver

@@ti0039a340 I don’t even know what winter tires are 😬how am I adult and don’t know this! Literally googling now 😒
From what I've seen over the years not enough people are smart enough to invest in studded tires.
Clint Smitheman where do you live, bro?

Winter Tires? Sanding Roads? Staying Home , Naah!!
You don't have to use sand or salt on the road if you have proper tires.
HAHAHA i love how you show the lonely person walking down the road at the end
Love every minute of this music!!!
Thanks for watching!
Dont they put salt on the roads so it melt?
Salt is for ice, not inches of snow. Plows are for snow
I laughed out loud when "Anchors Aweigh" kicked in.
I'll always remember the snow in 2008, when my dad got stuck on a bus for over 8 hours because a jackknifed truck was blocking I5 😬
Love the music
Daniel brings back memories
Vehicles slide on ice and snow everywhere they happen in the entire world. That includes Canada, Russia, Europe, the USA - everywhere. And that's true even in the places where it occurs regularly every winter.
This is why I have two sets of wheels for my 4wd car. One set with all season and the other set with studded snow tires. I live in the mountains.
grew up in Yakivegas (aka Yakima) yeah studs all around why? front brakes 90% of your stopping power.
SeattleTrafficCams, what does my Anchor Away has anything to do with your snow stricken motorists clip?
@Why Me I'd prefer Winter Wonderland or Sleigh Ride or something snowy like that.
Seatt Traff Cams Thank you for Video . Full title was fine for me and I liked that you labeled Music . Nice choice and volume . Those poor Busses Jack Knifed . Question do they use the term Jill Knifed if they are a Female bus ? I hope things have not gone too Crazy with bus terms there yet . I have only been to Seattle once and was not there long enough to see what it was like . I live on a Hill in an area that has Dry snow , Medium Snow and Wet Snow . Sometimes we get a lot at one time for Multiple days . Our Garbage trucks have plows on them when a storm comes . We use a lot of salt when temps are right for it .
😂 you should see them drive when it rains. it’s almost like they don’t see rain all year.
What did Metro do with all the thousands of sets of tire chains?
Did Ksama Sawant order them recycled for park benches?
do people not use a separate set of snow tires? im in a snow free climate so i dont know but i always assumed/was told people had a separate set for winter, or is it that bad WITH snow tires
Seattle does not get snow very often. Most people that love there use the same tires all year and the few times it does snow there this happens. In other areas that get snow more often, people do use winter tires in winter and regular tires the rest of the year.
With snow tires they would have no problems.
Best video music I’ve heard!!👍😂
The probably sued the snow for emotional distress
What kind of city doesn't have a storage of crushed rock (or any kind of gravel) to use on icy roads?
I think you " might " find the answer in the video ( city too poor )
@@thomasfletcher4109 actually, Seattle was better prepared for this than last time.
They did have plows with sand and salt ready. They prioritized "primary" roads, the "secondary", but as soon as the cleared a path it snowed again, and the "tertiary" roads never got a chance. Remember - this only happens to us every few years ago, so they don't spend a lot on plows and such
@@TSKseattle as an area resident, I know this.

A+ for Washington State driving on snow D - For George driving on snow and they get it more often You Southerners need to watch and take some notes don't see any of them stranded on the interstate for 36 hours .
just went through it again the last part of December...probably even worse. to be fair, the snow comes down wet, then freezes, with more snow on top, so you have snow covered ice which is the worst. on the other hand, there's a lot of new arrivals in the Seattle area from homes where they have no experience in winter driving or driving at all
When I was young I drove in the snow as much as possible so when I got my license I wouldn't struggle at snow driving and it worked
Good idea - however - Just give Mother Nature a chance - she can humble the most skilled of drivers.
Great choice of music!
Thanks!
I don't understand... are they driving with summer tyres on snow?
Great soundtrack!!!
why don't some people understand that summer tires or all-season tires don't work so well on snow and ice. And have to drive when the snow conditions don't allow it
In Canada it is one of the great challenges. Snow tires make a big difference. If we get early snow/ice we get caught without snow tires on and go through this too. Stay safe but enjoy the simple spin outs.
yup i live in seattle and use snow tires. there is no hill that i can’t go to. funny thing is people don’t realize that i have snow tires and try to follow me up hills and end up getting stuck wondering how i made it up or down.
this was an ice storm. people thought it would be snow like pack. not even snow tires can make a difference on ice roads.
Never learn,probably never will
Just the most perfect music lol 🤣
Couldn't help but snort at 3:31, SO important to brush off snow from the roof of the car, for everyone safety.
Love the Music!
Half the people in Seattle came up from L.A. for the real estate deals. What can you expect of those insane drivers???
the circus music fits perfectly
Ooooh, have these guys considered... a change of tyres every late November? Even if it isn't always like that, winter IS winter, people. Stay safe!
Loved your background music...
I found it annoying.
great video ! love the shout out at the end to SDOT, WSDOT tow drivers and bus drivers and emergency vehicles ! all heros !
Oh so freezing temperatures and snow isn’t normal in Seattle? It definitely isn’t down here in Texas but weird
It’s an embarrassment that this region of Washington is so BAD with dealing with and preparing for snow.
They don't ever get snow because of the Pacific. It literally rains all year except for a few months at the end of summer.
Guessing the USA doesn't pre-salt roads or even have salt grit?
You guessed wrong.

The girl walking down the highway in the last clip makes me suuuuuuuuuuper nervous
Me too! I'm not sure why she decided that it was better to abandon her car and walk up the hill instead, instead of waiting for SDOT or someone else to help get her out. It's not like they were in the middle of nowhere...
At least she has better traction on foot than most cars driving in the snow
Patar1441 Because it’s harder to walk on the snowy sidewalk than a less snowy street
YES because her back is towards the direction of oncoming traffic; if a car comes, she won't see it coming and won't move over or jump out of the way. She should be walking on the other side of the median facing the direction of any possible oncoming traffic.
WHY do you take your car when it's snowy and you have crappy tires?!
@@alan4657 And you have to make even more money to repair the car.....

dont you guys have winter tires, and tire chains? xD
Wet snow are slick as snot. There's not much you can do AND you HAVE to get work AND there are hills everywhere! SO, don't laugh until you've driven in it!! Sighed: A Seattlite

We only need them a few days each year, so no 😭
Trade in that ever so wonderful Prius and invest in either a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive rig and actually go drive in the snow. Theres a dang mountain range not more than an hour away that people could go and practice in but most don’t!
Jeep Wrangler snow plow with chains on all four wheels, never did get stuck, but wrangler was in 4 wheel drive 100% of the time.
People should just stay home.

No tire chains for buses?

2nd wave: 9 inches of snow
3rd wave: 1 inch of snow
4th wave: 2 inches of snow
5th wave: 6 inches of snow
Too many inches of snow!
Some seem to be on summer tyres. They do know that winter tyres do exist? Don't they?
Y'all had better think about getting snow tires because this isn't going to stop happening. Winter tires are good not only for snow and ice but also have better grip in cool temperatures.
As a resident of Montreal, this is absolutely comical. We got a foot of snow in 24h last week. These idiots are completely incapable of driving in 0.1 inch of snow and ice XD
