I find it to be hilarious that conspiracy theorist would say, "But the UN. They wouldn't lie to us" also, "Everyone is lying to us.". I was curious to see what globe sculptures the UN has, and of course, they have a huge sculpture called "Sphere Within a Sphere" right at the visitors' entrance to the UN.

For the record, the Gleason projection is a projection of the globe, not a "flat earth map." If flat earthers think that this is a 2D representation of the earth, then all that needs to be said is that it is wrong. Australia is not twice as wide as the US, for example.
Of course, there is no actual "flat earth map" that correctly reflects the distances between places on earth. Which is a problem because, by definition, if the earth is flat you could have a perfectly accurate 2D representation, without any silly "distortion."
Sadly, Gleason was actually a flat earther, so the fact that he had to put the information about it being a globe projection on his patent is probably easy for them to ignore. They can just act like he was coerced by the they in government. Not that it's hard for them to ignore basic facts or anything.

@@renedekker9806 Yeah, I've been kind of thinking about misinformation as a result of new media. There are some pretty comparable eras. In the mid to late 19th century, there were a series of technological advances that spurred rapid growth of various kinds of print media.
So, just like now, there was a huge demand for content, and just about anyone could figure out a way to print something, as long as they could read and write, I guess.
So, Dubay pretty much just copies a bunch of stuff from the 19th century, and then tosses in some of his own silly claims.

and then they try to claim that they're the ones using simple observations the logic while globe earthers are the ones bending over backwards
Flat earthers consider themselves "free thinkers," unburdened facts, logic, and verified scientific evidence. So when a person provides one of the many, many pieces of evidence that the earth is not flat, they usually respond with something along the lines of "see how they always have a little explanation for everything?" and walk away as if they won the debate of the century.

There is no map. Flatearthers don't have a picture,map, model, and they can't even make one accurate prediction according to their flatearth belief. The FE creator, Rowbotham, dropped out of school at the age of 9. They have no understanding or critical thinking. That's why they have no contributions to modern technology, medicine, or science.

Flat Earthers don't get confidence that their arguments are coherent, if you debunk them nicely, nor do they lose confidence if you are mean.

I've always found these kinds of conspiracies hilarious because they seem to act like the world is a shitty mystery novel where the giant worldwide conspiracy can't help but put out little clues to the truth that they are simultaneously spending trillions of dollars upkeeping. The early 19th century mark the turning point when it was no longer possible for one single person to get an «universal knowledge» of the world. That was very frightening for some.

There was a time during the 19th century when steam powered printing started booming. Lots of newspapers started up. If you could read and write, you could pay to publish something like Rowbotham's pamphlet in 1849. Also "Snake oil" was coined sometime after this, so it just makes sense.
This particular media moment is referred to as The Penny Press Era. Of course, a lot of other media technology was invented, and the process just got easier and faster.
It kind of looks to me like a slightly slower version of the train wreck of the internet and social media. Whenever we get new media innovations, it seems like misinformation ticks up, and it takes time to walk some of that back.

Just look at what it's done to CC's relationship with his wife, or to the people who see flat earth videos and think "hmmmm they do make some good points".

I know, for example, that if I come up with some idea that I think is absolutely brilliant, that someone has definitely already either had the idea and done it, or had the idea and been like, "Man, that was a terrible idea."

I assumed it was to prevent any country being in the center, since the north pole takes that spot.
If they used the traditional 2D map, they'd have to pick some country to focus on and that would look like it was favouring one country.

@@yikemoo I think there is something right and proper to making the effort to try educate and combat anti scientific views and disinformation. People do need to do this, if they can earn a bit of a living whilst doing it. I’m ok with that. People are entitled to their opinions even if they are wrong or others disagree. What people don’t have the right to do is come up with alternative facts and realities just because they don’t understand or grasp scientific facts, principles and results from valid experiments that have been proved over and over again.

It amuses me when when flat earthers say "do your research". To a flat earther doing their research means being sat on RUclips all day watching flat earth videos and then repeating them back verbatim on sites like this one. For example they hear on RUclips the sun never sets but goes to far away to be seen without specifying how far. If the sun were moving back and forth throughout the day, it would also appear be shrinking or growing throughout the day as well. If it was always circling overhead then it would never move in an arc in in the sky, but would always sail overhead in a straight line, shrinking until it was nothing except a bright spot of light like a star at night. Then growing again in the morning until it was at its maximum size at midday.

@@yikemoo -- Actually, seems rather ingenious, because you know every flat earther around the globe is going to watch your video to tell you how dumb you are, which equates to thousands of views easy, so that should be some pretty sweet ad revenue.
And for globers that support you, there's always some bit of science to learn, at least a base level of it for you to further research, an entertaining video all around, and he's probably getting a modest sum from patreon.
Also, doing this is getting him a free trip to Antarctica (unless things fall through), and that's a trip that's totally worth it.

There is a simple explanation for this. The origin of the UN logo lies in an alternate universe in which the earth is flat. Incidentally, Dave Weiss is a Globe Earther in this alternate universe.
Before watching the video my theory is: because the un doesnt want to put any country in the center which could make it seem more important than others.

Plotting straight lines on the azimuthal equidistant map result in rhumb-line/loxodromes in reality, due to Earth's curvature.

That OECD logo is bizarre. They seem to have wanted to depict all the landmasses other than Antarctica, but instead of taking the massive Pacific and stretching it to cover the "hidden" half of the globe, they chose to take the Atlantic.
If one wants to show the the western parts of Alaska on one edge of the map and the eastern parts of Russia on the other, one would need to show all 360 degrees of longitude. Although the Atlantic Ocean is smaller, the only thing between roughly 10W and 25W is Greenland, which isn't a country but intstead a territory of Denmark.

@@DaveMcKeegan When we talk about globe theory the sun would melt antartica. On a flat earth antartica is impossible to melt because the sun is never over it. Not to mention in the flat earth model the sun is closer during the summer when on the globe theory it is the opposite. We are closer to the sun during summer in the globe theory. Not only that but there is no mechanism to cause the earth to tilt. Flat earth explains all of these points more accurately and fit all forms of logic
@@mikep9604 if the earth was a globe the sunset would cause objects and the curve to produce a upward shadow on other objects/clouds. We don't get that tho. Instead objects only produce downward shadows.
Also sunsets are only explained on a flat earth model. When objects in the sky get farther they set. When they get closer the rise.

Step 1: steal the UN logo map and claim it to be the flat earth map.
Step 2: tell everyone: hey, the UN map looks exactly like the flat earth map, therefore the earth must be flat. 😂
Because of the way the continents are organized, an azimuthal equidistant projection centered on the north pole can show most of the continents (albeit with some distortion in the southern hemisphere), and with the consequence of antarctica not really being shown at all (stretched out to a coordinate sinularity).

The United Nations originally used a 3D globe for their logo, but their stacks of headed notepaper took up so much space that they ran out of stationery cupboards.
In other news, the constellations (or asterisms) depicted on the flags of Australia, New Zealand, and Alaska are not to scale nor do the actual stars have five or seven points. Similarly, the Pakistani flag, showing a star in front of a crescent moon, is also not a depiction of how things really are.

There's another reason why you don't want to use a square map (based on the Mercator projection) and it's very similar to using an image of the Earth:
What do you pick as the middle point for your map projection?
The most common Mercator-projection (as used in this video) puts the Prime Meridian in Greenwich in the middle, so we end up with the familiar image with Africa and Europe in the middle... however that pushes Asia, Australia and the Americas to the sides.
Look at a Mercator projection used in Asia and you might find they put China or Japan in the middle. Same with the US, that might put the US in the middle and push all other continents to the sides.
So using that projection doesn't really do you any good, in terms of avoiding favoritism towards a place on earth.
The modern UN logo avoids that problem wholesale, by putting everything on a flat circular plain with the Northpole in the middle.
Just centre it on the middle of the pacific ocean, so that no major land masses are visible at all. Then I guess you'll be accused of favouritism towards fish.
Perhaps a quick tutorial on how to produce an AE map would be helpful, especially one centred on the South Pole……time to get rulers and pencils ready…
