  • The 2023 KTM 790 Adventure looks like a KTM, smells like a KTM, and feels like a KTM, but it's cheaper than what you'd expect to pay for a KTM... So, what's the catch?
Well, you're not getting an Austrian-made motorcycle.
For the new 790 Adventure, KTM has outsourced production to China. Does this really matter? James takes the 2023 790 Adventure for a ride to find out.
A huge thank you to the team at Halvarssons for supporting this ride-along video. Check out the jacket James wore using the link below.

I bought this bike 3 months ago. Made 5000 km so far. Its such a lovely a nice bike. Do not care china part. Almost all brands are in china even the phones you are using. I drove 700 km non stop and ı enjoy every km. I also rode Transalp but you cannot compare KTM 790 ADV with it. KTM is way better for sure. There are lots of extras like the gent explains in the video such as heating seat and grips and and also comfort seats. But ı found it quite comfortable even thought ım 1.85 and 112 kg. The only thing ı don't like is quickshifter+cruise control and rally mode is extra after 1500km later. And thank you for the gent who explained the bike really well. Have a lovely day all!

If KTM had any intention of putting crappy components on this 790, it would not put its KTM badge on it. I would buy this bike over the 890 adventure, which only has adjustable front suspension over this 790. Putting reliablity aside, this bike is superior to any Japanese rival, in all aspects. And reliabilty is not far off, and more due to poor quality control on the production line. It is my feeling that quality control will be tighter on the cfmoto production line, just because this is a good deal for cfmoto, and they will not want to lose it.

One thing going for the 790 Adventure over the competition (Tenere 700, Transalp 750 and 800 DE) is that it has Cruise Control! For some, not having cruise control in this day and age is a deal-breaker.

I loved my 790 (2019 / Austrian built), but wasn't impressed with the build quality. Within 2 years it was showing quite a bit of corrosion on the fasteners and spoke nipples, and the TFT screen was constantly steaming up inside. It developed a few rattles that I could never pin down and some warm starting issues too, and my bikes tend to have an easy time. Maybe the Chinese can improve the quality!

Warped rotors, rear brake caliper mount broke, 3 rim seals for the front, immobilizer failure, 3-4 tries for a cold start, and now its in the shop for an MTC error message and won't start. Love the bike and how it rides but the quality is the worst of any bike I've ever owned.

I find the seating / standing position pretty good and well thought out on this one. Maybe some aspect of personal taste, but the bolt upright standing position a lot of adventure riders tend to favour isn't actually good practice, you need to have an engaged core and be in a somewhat aggressive stance for most offroad settings (I wouldn't say this bike is super aggressive, just somewhere in the middle). It's not as comfortable, sure, but you're always going to be limited to basic stuff if you don't have your weight forward, elbows up, and unlocked knees.

What most people don't understand about "made in" is that it can be completely faked by a company if they want to.
If KTM gets a pre ensembled bike in their factory in Austria and in 20 minutes they can put the bike together that would qualify as made in Austria, and as someone mentioned most of the components would probably be made in China anyway.

@@rhonwyngilbert4102 it has stupid little issues. Earlier models had leaky water pumps which were fixed under warranty, original front wheel bearings for some people have worn out relatively fast but then again they could be beating the crap out of the motorcycle in the dirt. The fuel sending unit seems to be a little shoddy and it took about 9,000 mi for mine to give me a fault. Other than the stupid little issues the engine and everything is completely sound. Even a lot of people who have had their first valve service say that the valves were still within spec and did not need adjustment. The shift lever is a little big and if you drop it on the left just right you can snap the shift lever pivot bolt but there are aftermarket solutions for that. It's all little stupid stuff. Now when i have up the motorcycle thing in early 2000s i don't think ktm were really a thing, all I've really know of KTM, is its a monster enduro bike that you slap on a sat nav and hair arsing over a desert. Now are these little 790s actually a practical machine, do u really need adjustable suspension, i guess most people wouldn't know how to set it up( i certainly wouldn't) does some clever enginer who sets up desert bikes select the suspension. In the real world how do these compare to a transalp or a Vstrom 800, is one better than another, or just a different take on the same thing?

Shame most of this video was filmed with a potatoe ;) IMO the 790 is a bargain at less than £10k no much if anything to beat it for mixed adventure. If this version existed at the time I bought my 890 Adventure, I would have gotten this instead. Barring the suspension (which need work on the 890 and 890 R anyway), this has all the same updates the 890 does minus the larger bore.

It’s not sub-£10K anymore, it’s now £10.5K, so with creeping inflation it’ll wont be long before it’s close to the price the 890 is now. And if you want any options like a centre stand, heated grips, or the electronic demo stuff it quickly gets well past £12K. Bikes are getting stupidly expensive across the board. At least there’s a thriving market in the 500cc-ish segment for those of us with less money, or less of an appetite to spend car prices on a hobby toy. The explanation of selling more bikes makes no sense when they’re only 100cc apart and basically the same in spec, yet supposed to be two separate, distinct models. Maybe they’re seeing how China works out before shifting the entire midrange over there. That would make more sense as everyone else is at it. How long before the 990 Adventure comes out though? Maybe we’ll get a Chinese 890 in autumn 😂

Or are they getting desparate? Until they prove that a Chinese made KTM is no Less KTM, I think people might veer towards other brands. I personally have decided to go for the new Transalp and with the praises it's been getting worldwide, I think it has a great prospect. Of course it's missing things like cornering abs, cruise control, tubeless tires, but at least all in all, it's still a Honda.
