Thank you so much , I myself was not sure witch bike to chose between the 890 s , 890 R Norden 901 or expedition . I am also not tall at 5’6” 165 lbs , but after watching your video , will go for the 901 expedition or the 890R . I also like to do hard core off road . Thanks again , great stuff !
You could try these progressive springs (hyper pro for ex). They help soften them at the start of the travel and then firm them up. avoiding reaching the bottom as easily as with the original ones.
Yeah, I love the bike. Just need different suspension. BTW, I read lots about reliability concerns. I've had no issues that way. My experience has been that KTM has really improved quality over the last 5+ years. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for the tip!! I’ll put both on my list…just putting an akrapovic on as just back from a tour of Corsica with friends!! Excellent trip and the bike was flawless…thanks again!! Nick
Currently ride a 2022 KTM690 Only have the one bike now so looking at trading in for either a 890r or Norton 901 expedition or a 890 Adventure, I like the first 2 but only being 5,8 I do like the low seat on the 890 Adventure
I own an S, I'm 5'11 200lb, the person who sold me the bike installed Andreani springs in front and Hyper pro rear suspension, I previously had a 1090R and with these improvements the 890S handles incredibly well offroad, i live in Baja and push hard on those roads
I ride the KTM 890 Adv. R 2023 with split seats with heating. Off road I prefer the fender to have distance to the wheel, no blockage between tire and fender.
Yeah, I get it. I probably made a mistake purchasing the Adventure S. Stay tuned, I just changed out the suspension on the S for the Norden 901 Expedition suspension (same as R). Only have 100 miles in the seat on the suspension, but wow, what a difference!
Hey, nice video. Seems like the models in the US may be a little different. Our European model we get down in Australia has the following : Rally mode doesn’t turn off the Rear ABS. You switch the ABS to off-road mode. You can do this in any ride mode. The Seat you are showing is a Power Parts Seat with heat. This is also available to fit on the R model down here. Not sure if the one we get is lower, but you can also use the higher position, which you can’t with the standard seat.
Interesting point on the PowerParts seat. If I understand you correctly, if you buy the PP seat, you gain a lower seat position on the R? Of course, the bike starts 1" higher due to the suspension. If that's the case, that point wasn't shared with me when deciding between the S or R. Thanks for watching.
@@MichauxOutdoors yeah, I find that these days buyers seem to know more than the dealers. They’re not doing their homework, but we do. Seems your dealer could do with a quick reference guide. 👍🏼
@@MichauxOutdoors: The R and the "S" are effectively the exact same bike. The only difference is the livery, suspension, windshield and enduro seat (R) vs 2 part seat (S), but all parts are fully interchangeable between the 2 bikes, even for the suspension, the S triple clamps are able to accommodate the 48mm Xplor (R) fork legs. You could have purchased the R and fit the standard or power parts 2 part seats and they are fully adjustable, just like on the S as the adjustment is on the actual seat, the mounting point on the bike is the same nob you pointed to on your video.
Yeah, thanks. I'm learning the hard way. The suspension upgrade referenced will include the R forks and rear shock. So suspension will be much improved. Through this video, I learned that the mounting points for the seat are the same on the S and R. The goal is to save others headaches and $ to avoid my experience.
I own a 2022 890R drive on and off road, so far I've put 30,000 + K on it without any problems. Had the cams checked at 30K service all is good so I'm planning a winter trip from western Canada to Mexico next January, love the bike and by then I'll have 45-50K and expecting to cover another 15-20K hopefully like the first 30K worry free. Sorry for your troubles with the bike because when you get a good one I don;t think you can beat the bike.
Yeah, the Adventure S is a great bike. I enjoy offroad overnight adventures on the 890. The 300 EXC is another good bike. I had a KTM, but recently purchased a Husqy FE350s for the gnarly single track. Life isn't so bad when we're able to enjoy several bikes. Thanks for reaching out
How many screens can one person on one motorcycle use? You have the bike screen, a Zuno, a GPSMAP w/Inreach, and another on that looks like your phone. That's a whole lot of visual space obstructing your view,. I don't understand what purpose all these devices serve. Nice bike and video. Maybe you could do an episode on why you feel the need for 4 screens. I've ridden a lot of PA with just a compass and a phone in my bag. I would like to get the GPS with InReach though, what is your opinion between the GPSMAP and Montana w/Inreach.
That's too funny about the four screens. I don't usually have my phone mounted as the fourth screen. Was using it this time for speaking points. Typically, I run the TFT of course + the Garmin Tread for navigation. The Garmin 66i could be tucked away, but when I solo ride I use it for bread crumbing so family and friends have a sense of where I'm at in the event of an emergency. So no video on the need for 4 screens. On the GPS w/ InReach, I think it's a necessary safety piece of equipment. So I run the Garmin Tread base model - no InReach built in. The Tread base connects to the 66i for InReach functionality. The larger Tread models have IR built in but are too big for ADV motorcycles in my opinion. Tread vs. the Montana - I like the bigger screen size on the Tread. The Tread also allows you to download the USFS maps which allows for direct downloads of the BDRs as an example. I'll be publishing a video on the Tread for ADV riding within the next week. Appreciate you reaching out.
@@MichauxOutdoors Thanks for the response. I'm looking for an all in one unit to do all the BDR, Tour de Coalfields, and other ADV/Dual Sport stuff in the PA and WV areas. Thanks for the great review! I'm not an off-roader, yet prefer adventure bikes for both local rides and touring. I believe the KTM 890 Adventure S would be perfect for me. Very difficult to find right now, as KTM will not be bringing the Austrian built 890 Adventure S to the US in '24. It's being replaced by the 790 Adventure S, which is built for KTM by CFMoto in China. The 790 Adventure S is a couple grand less expensive, does not come with adjustable suspension, identical weight and is down 10 hp. The 890 Adventure R and Rally will be coming to the US in 2024, but they're too tall for me. I'm currently riding a '22 Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro, the road oriented version in the Tiger 900 lineup. Wonderful bike! Quick question...What brand of lower engine crash bars did you choose? They look very clean/simple.
It's a shame that KTM is going the 790 route you described. As a package, the 890s is a great bike. For me, I've been riding more offroad than I anticipated so I need a suspension upgrade. I'm short at 5' 7" so the lower seat height of the S was appealing to me. The 900 GT Pro is a great bike. A buddy of mine has the same bike and loves it. The crash bars are from Touratech. Excellent quality and perfect fit/finish. Appreciate you tuning into the channel.
I've had the 22' 890 Adventure and I wondered if I was going to experience those issues with the suspension. So far with most of my 11,000 miles being a lot of road miles but also the Giant Loop Rally and local dirt trails and roads I haven't found the suspensions limits. I also have a 501. If I were thinking of the 890 Adventure R for all those off road suspension concerns I would probably just sell both the 890 and the 501 to get a 701/690/700, at least that's where my experiences and thoughts have taken me.
Exactly the thought process I've been going through. I have a Husqy FE350 which is great for those evening/day trail rides. The 890 serves as a pack-mule for multi day rides. Buying the S turned out to be the expensive route for me. Purchased the S because of the lower seat height and at the time thought our riding would be more 50/50. Today we ride 95% off-road. To solve the suspension concern, just had the suspension swapped out for the 890R suspension. So I now have a black/gray S model with the R suspension maintaining the lower seat height. Just got it back from the shop - no rides yet. Plan to create a video outlining the parts and process. Thanks for checking in.
@@MichauxOutdoors I’ll be looking forward to your experience with the swapped out suspension. Bikes get expensive, but not as expensive as Jeeps and trucks. 😂

The heated seats are more comfortable than the stock seats. Yes, same thickness and dimensions as original seats. The heated seats have a slightly more rounded top side edge which I think adds to the comfort. Otherwise, the fit is perfect and the heated seat in the cold weather does wonders for rider comfort.
Its almost 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other. I got the 890R 2021, and love the bike, the engine is the best ever, really nice. The suspension, stock with my 170 lbs it had not much sag at all, like an inch...that was with preload backed all the way off. It rode like a buck board. I put a zip tie on the shock shaft and the shock wasnt moving much. Taking a guess, sort of, I put a shock spring 2 rates softer on back, and 1 rate softer up front. Its way better, totally rideable. But still doesnt have the sag setting KTM wants it to have. @ 6' tall 33.5" inseam I really cant reach the ground very well. If one foot is down the other foot is 6" off the ground. Which is OK until a U turn is tried on a narrow dirt road maybe with a hill involved......that 470lbs can go over quick if a foot cant touch down. Its only fell over once doing this in 17,800 miles. And that was the 2nd day out, so I learned about U turns in tight areas. The suspension, really works when I go fast thru big chunk/holes etc. Its a little firm going slow. Typical KTM. For sure would only bottom if I took it to an MX track, even with camping gear on it. ---------------------------------------------- I almost wish I had got an S and redone the suspension but kept it stock heidth.
It put a smile on my face to hear a 6' rider can experience similar challenges to a 5'8" rider. I purchased the S primarily for the seat height, and at the time, I envisioned riding 50/50. However, we're now riding 90%+ off-road. So the S suspension is really showing its true colors - not intended for 90% off-road. I just got the call this week that my WP XPLOR components have arrived. Bottom line, I'm taking the S model and installing the R suspension and then lowering 30mm which is equivalent to stock low seat height on the S. Hoping this is the ticket - thanks for watching
I currently have a triumph t120 black and a KTM EXC 350f. Been looking into the midweight adventure Market and this bike that you have tops my list. My riding would probably be 80/20 at best. Traveling from Maryland's Eastern shore I'm hours in the saddle before I get to the gravel roads of the mountains. If you're out to sell that bike and jump to an r model, maybe we could talk...
Thanks for reaching out. With the investment I have in this bike, my plan is to modify the suspension and keep the bike. At least for the near term, no plans to sell. Appreciate you watching.
Great vid…bought the same jun23, loving it too at 6.5 miles! Could you pls tell me where you bought your hand guards and mirrors from? Many thanks…nick@uk
Apologies for the delayed response ... purchased the handguards from Touratech - touratech-usa.com/store/Touratech-DEFENSA-Handguards-KTM-690-790-890-950-990-1090-1190-1290-Husq-701. The mirrors are DoubleTake mirrors which I purchased from Vanasche. Appears an upgraded version is now available - vanaschemotorsports.com/collections/ktm-790/products/double-take-mirrors. Let me know how you make out.
I bought a 2022 model like yours been in shop a bunch with electrical issues and now getting antifreeze in the oil it started at having electrical issues at 2,500 miles and started getting rid of antifreeze at 5,000 miles my dealer and ktm will not fix it they say it’s fine just keep putting antifreeze back into the reservoir tank .
Wow, that doesn't sound good or make sense. I've not had any issues with my 2023 to this point - 5,000 miles. I'll have to check again, but I think the '23 models are significantly different compared to the '22.
@@MichauxOutdoors Anti freeze is corrosive and will kill an engine, I would get that fixed while warranty exists for absolute sure. I would insist they fix it and now.
The engine heat is noticeable in the summer months, but not to the point where it's problematic. The bodywork does a reasonable job of redirecting the heat.
Well if you bought the 890 R and spent the extra money to lower and detune the suspension you still will be better off with the 890 standard model you got and spend the extra money on it to go with something like TracTive suspension from Ted Porter's Beemer Shop and tune it for your weight, and believe me it is a game changer! Answer to weather you made mistake with the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure standard model over the R model is NO. You are going to modify the suspension anyway and the base model or S model you call it is cheaper and has a better warranty besides your model looks way better with it's stealthy looks over the R model. And check out what I did with my 2023 KTM 890 Adventure base model's suspension: ruclips.net/video/xG_Q6RB7_sY/видео.htmlsi=hlgooPJb40uRcIIY
Hey, thanks for the perspective. Agree, I like the look of the S better than the R - the lower front fender works for me. Watched your video - it was helpful thanks. Looking forward to my suspension change-out. Appreciate you watching
@@MichauxOutdoors I also chose the S because of my height, and the looks (also got the black version) but I'm only 70 KG (~155 lbs) in weight, so I am in the 75 KG range the bike was designed to "carry" offroad, so if I set the forks to the sport settings (7 clicks counterclockwise from fully clockwise position) I rearely bottom out the forks. The shock also needs sufficient preload for offroad (I usually go to 5 turns clockwise) and have set the rebound to fast (sport settings). In time if I find that I ride more aggressively I might also upgrade the suspensions, but in your case at 90 KG, you will defiantly need to upgrade at least the spring rates both front and rear and you will see the stock suspension is not that bad.
This is kind of my thinking after buying an R. Yeah the R looks and is more badass, but how bad ass do I want to ride a near 500lb bike off road? The tractive suspension is that good?
@@MichauxOutdoors 100% so much so I am hoping they bring out a limited release one like the KTM Adventure R Rally. I’ll get the expedition lowered for the Mrs and ride the fancier one :) Either way 890/901 great bike. Was riding a tiger 1200 Rally Explorer before trading in on the Exped. No regrets.
Sounds like you're on the right path. Great idea on the limited release on the 901. Outside of the "alien" look of the 890, any advantages to the 901 over the 890? I'm asking, because I really like the look of the 901. Availability was nil back in the spring when I bought my 890.
@@MichauxOutdoors Not really in the base. On the 890 R vs 901 Expedition the 901 comes with the same suspensions but slightly softer springs which feel a bit less bouncy, heated seat, grips, bash plate and all the electronics unlocked included in the price. In reality I think its more of a looks decision. Only thing I would change on the 901 exped if I had access to the Husky design team would be give us the big rally foot pegs as standard and make the touring screen more vertical like the 450 Dakkar rally bikes. The height of the touring screen isn’t an issue, but the height and the back leaning angle combined means when you are on the pegs riding hard you tend to headbut it occasionally. Like anything thats not quite to your liking you can always change it. Looking at the 990 KTM seem to be doubling down on the predator/insect/alien theme which really does leave the door open for the Husky/Gas Gas brands they own to give us options. I do love how they are using the same platforms across the different brands to give more choice to the consumer.
Thanks for the inputs on the 901. I agree, the multiple brands give us great options. For dual-sport riding, I previously rode a KTM 500exc. This year I moved to a Husky FE350s. Absolutely love it! As you mentioned on your 901, came stock with premium parts which I appreciated.
bikes come pretty much set for 170/180 lb riders, you are way over that and then added loads of gear - the suspension has no chance so the ktm (or other manufcaturer) cannot be blamed. Springs are the 1st thing people should look at and weigh themselves - be honest and if you are gonna spend good money on a bike spend more getting it right, it is very easy and common sense, give the gear a chance and then go see about valving etc later
Hey, you're absolutely right. Certainly not blaming KTM. Many riders fall outside of the "built for weight class". The quality of the suspension and the ability to modify and/or adjust the suspension is limited on the S compared to the suspension on th R. Even with the R suspension, springs need to be modified to rider weight. Thanks for your perspective.
I hear you on the CFMoto and will time will tell if it's comparable. The 2023 890 Adventure S is a great bike - Austrian made. The suspension is just too light for me. Did you buy the CFMoto?
Congrats!

----------------------------------------------
I almost wish I had got an S and redone the suspension but kept it stock heidth.
@@MichauxOutdoors Thanks for a informative review.
Just watch your water reservoir tank that will tell you if it’s losing coolant
Good advice. The coolant reservoir gets lost behind the bodywork and I tend to forget about it.
@@MichauxOutdoors Anti freeze is corrosive and will kill an engine, I would get that fixed while warranty exists for absolute sure. I would insist they fix it and now.
Appreciate the advice. Thanks!
How is the engine heat on your legs?
The engine heat is noticeable in the summer months, but not to the point where it's problematic. The bodywork does a reasonable job of redirecting the heat.
Great vid i got 690 Dont No if it would Help its high but not electrics
Yeah, I considered the 690, but it sits too high for me. Appreciate you watching
Ktm Do most right Theres No unicorn hope make sence i had three Bikes sml but its Bloody expensive
@@MichauxOutdoors I am 5/8 brought a new 690 and got it professionally lowered can’t believe how smooth the bike is for a thumper
You lucky devil, you live in an area you can enjoy an adventure bike.
Yeah agree, very lucky. We bought the home for the outdoors. Trust you'll be able to find some good ADV riding
You're absolutely right on the suspension. Hence, the suspension parts are ordered. Thanks again
This is kind of my thinking after buying an R. Yeah the R looks and is more badass, but how bad ass do I want to ride a near 500lb bike off road? The tractive suspension is that good?
I reckon you did... should have purchased a 901 :) not a fan of the alien insectoid pumpkin look
Do you have a 901, and if yes, are you happy with it?
@@MichauxOutdoors 100% so much so I am hoping they bring out a limited release one like the KTM Adventure R Rally. I’ll get the expedition lowered for the Mrs and ride the fancier one :)
Either way 890/901 great bike.
@@MichauxOutdoors oh yeah that's all I was doing bud 👍
Too much music here...have fun with your bike.
Thanks for the feedback, we'll work on it
Unfortunately a terrible sound, too much noise from the engine so your voice is hard to hear 😢
Thanks for the feedback. Always a challenge when riding and talking. Will try to improve on next video.
The snow plow lower cowl 🤮 💯
Sorry but too expensive for getting China product.
CFMoto half the price for same product 😅
I hear you on the CFMoto and will time will tell if it's comparable. The 2023 890 Adventure S is a great bike - Austrian made. The suspension is just too light for me. Did you buy the CFMoto?
