I got the 890 a few weeks ago. after only 400 miles I started having the issue with cold starts and had to start it 5 times one morning. The problem is that it only starts on 1 cyl and and the other one doesnt go until it warms up. Adding a little throttle on start seems to help but definitely an absurd issue for a brand new bike...

I have finally decided on the '23 KTM 890 Adventure (non-R) bike. I have studied maybe 12 different reviews of this bike, and several reviewers said something like "Clearly, KTM has been listening (to owners + reviewers) and this model has dozens of tweaks over previous models that prove it. We all owe a huge thank you to Brett Tkacs for speaking 'truth to power'! His fine reputation of being an intelligent and fair reviewer and trainer go a long way to encouraging companies like KTM to make improvements. It all about the details and proof of those details. Thanks again Brett. You da man!

Think what it’s like for “average Joe”. I wrote to KTM Uk & The Factory in Austria... guess what, not a single reply🙈🙈🙈. Eventually sold the bike broken with 2,100 miles on the clock...for £3,500. The bike with extras cost me in the UK £13,000 I have been purchasing & riding KTMs for over 15yrs.... NO more after the way the Dealer & Factory have been treating me...Shame🙈

Hi Bill, I’ve enjoyed a fair few of your videos. As a long term owner of aKTM 990 adv and an admirer of the the brand or at least I was, I think it’s shockingly bad the way KTM have treated you. I’m sorry to hear it. I’ve had no bother with mine in the 12.5 yrs and 60,000+ miles I’ve ridden it and I was considering a 790 as I thought it might be more manageable off road. The electronics on these modern bikes worries me as to their long term reliability but you don’t expect engines to go pop. Certainly not twice!
Recently I test rode a Himalayan and I thought this would do me especially along side the KTM, so early next year I’ll look out for a used one. How do you rate the Himalayan and does it cope with the places you ride in?
I look forward to seeing more videos of your off road antics, ride safe.

      Hi Andy
      Thanks for your kind words....
Bikes:- as far as reliability goes the Yamaha T7 is the best bike in its class... I have 5 mates that have purchased them and I have ridden it...if you ride it hard you will have to spend some money on the suspension, to date, none of my friends have had any mechanical problems 👌
      The wee Himalayan:-
If you treat it for what it is, it’s a super cheap all rounder and will tackle most things... in its own industrial ‘plodding’ way...it obviously lacks mph on the rd/highway but if you learn to recalibrate your brain to enjoy the simpler pleasures of biking it’s a hoot...👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃

Many thanks to share real experiences! Everyone knows that other manufactures/motorcylces having issues too. This is not related to a particular manufacturer. It depends even on the model itself. But an issue on the breaks is more seriously and should be handled with sensibility by KTM. Unfortunately, even in respect of the quality and pricerange of the motorcylces, KTM always tries to avoid to take over any responsibility. This is what KTM has definately to change. The feedback to KTM is really important for improvements.

I just got back from my second trip to Death Valley on it and it got abused in deep sand, ultra deep powder and endless rock and it just kept going. On the verge of buying a 24' KTM 790, coming from a 390 ADV, no issues with the 390. After watching/reading many reviews I'm starting to get the sense that KTM is cleaning things up and the 23+ models are certainly more reliable. I'm not really concerned that the new 790 Engine is made by CF Moto, I actually think/hope it's going to be quite reliable. Cf Moto has a lot on the line to make a good impression and from what I've seen so far the Fit and finish is quite good. Time will tell of course, but I'm willing to take a chance.

Fair & honest review. My experiences: I do not have the same exp with the abs/tc settings, but a little different. I ride off-road in rally mode, off-road throttle & off-road abs. If I stall or kill, it always starts up as set. However, if i turn the key off, 9x out of 10 it starts off as set, the other it starts up with rally throttle, which I really don't like, but still with off-road abs. Your cruise control and not starting when in gear is due to the clutch switch. I managed to make mine work intermittently, but loosening the screws on the switch. Replaced under warranty, all fixed. Keep it up. I'm a big fan of your videos!

Hopefully we'll have them before the wife and I join your training ride we signed up for next summer. Watching your skid plate video and remembering my last BDR ride makes me want to save the GS for long trips with less technical off-road! Thanks for another GREAT video Bret.

If you downsize from a GS, the 890 will sure be a lighter bike. However if you upsize from an enduro 350 the 790 will be a big beast. If you ride single track without buddies and you drop it, believe me you’ll not looking for an 890 with an additional 9 kg. Sure the additional torque will be welcome but a smaller front sprocket might be an alternative.
Depending on your riding style, the 890 might be a better bike. Myself, after a lot of 790 riding is not envy of 890 owners.

The rear rotor did the same thing on my 2020 790. I was able to get it covered by warranty as it damaged the caliber bracket. I've also have issues here and there with curse not staying engaged, normally it will be fine the next day. Glad to know my is not the only one that takes three tries to start in the mornings! Very annoying
Otherwise, I'm REALLY loving the bike. I had a Versys 650, and Concours 14 before it and it is by far my favorite motorcycle.
The only thing I'd like to add to this video is that you should make sure to get a skid plate that bolts onto the foot peg brackets. The foot peg bracket on the right side bolts to the engine and people have reports that if they hit that peg pretty hard on something. It rips the bolt off the engine and takes a chunk with it.... The really good skid plates will bolt up to that bracket to keep it from moving.

Great review, as all from you :-) I just bought an 890R to replace my trusty GS 1200 ADV and the only issue I had was the screen turning black on me during my first trip :-) so far so good at mere 1800 kms mileage (1100 miles). Still I put a lot of gadgets on it, lower and upper crash protection from TT (an extra support of the original skid plate solves its problem IMHO, Roxy risers (I’m 196 cm tall - 6ft 5’), had the seat redone (4 cm taller and wider for touring), Garmin XT in a TT lockable mount, extra led spotlights. A completely different story than my GS, but love it right now, especially for how it handles off-road. Keep the good job here on YT, best regards from Poland.

thx for this Bret. Based on videos from you and other reviewers I eventually settled on the standard 790 Adventure which better suits my riding applications. I realised (after just coming from a totally trouble free 65,000 kms 2014 Vstrom 1000) that there will be a chance of issues on this kTM, I certainly don't expect the clockwork reliability of the Vstrom, but I had to decide whether I was willing to gamble a little. Since the Tenere 700 has been in short supply here in Australia and is almost an identical price to what I paid for the last of the 790 Adventure S's, the idea of cruise control, tubeless tyres and the electronic wizardry won me over. PLUS they gave me deals on cruise control and Rally mode to further entice. As a late 60s guy who will do more blacktop and nice dirt tracks (usually alone) I'm more than a little confident that I don't test the bike's capabilities on rough stuff the way many younger R riders do. 3,000 kms later and no issues to this point.

Then also my girlfriend is in Germany at the moment, so 850km in one shot each time. I don't have a car, but I have several 950ies. That mileage includes several engines/motorbikes, but still, the first one is alive with original engine, heads and 254.000km. I just don't use it anymore because it's drinking too much oil. Great job Bret. I have owned several KTM’s in varying models and have learned they can be quite quirky for lack of a better word. I’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on the KTM adventure and I’m hoping that they’ve learned from the 790 and have made appropriate changes on the 890. It reminds me of the days of the KTM 950 and the issues we were having and then came along the 990. Most of the issues rectified but not all of them. Those of us that had the 950 suffered a bit unfortunately. That being said those were two incredible machines in the end. KTM is always trying to improve their machine annually so it seems they are utilizing the consumers as the R&D team which is unfortunate for the owners of the earlier model year machines. This is absolutely a non-professional opinion just a personal observation with my experience with KTM. Can’t thank you enough every time I watch your videos I learn something relevant to my questions and needs

Nice review Brett! The attention to detail on the 790s/r is indeed stellar. Three things missed in all reviews including this one; First, brake pedal thickness is offset and and can be flipped 180o quickly by removing one bolt. I like the thick side up-makes it easier to apply the brake while standing. Next, unlike most bikes the KTM includes a steering damper that greatly helps front end twitch in rocks, sand and deceleration from high speed. Finally, although not necessary, there's an embossed "sag" mark on the left rear side pannel that provides an easy reference point for setting ride height. A few other nice details other reviewers have noted are the easy access air cleaner, battery and fuse box, adjustable seat height, windscreen, clutch and front brake levers and of course the tubeless wheels are the icing on the cake. Speaking of wheels, most people seem to focus on the convenience of no tubes but that's only part of the story. Inner tubes not only add unsprung weight and make roadside flat repair a pain, but the gyroscoping weight increase of tubes noticably effects direction changes, ie handling. If you don't believe it, stuff a tube in the front wheel of your 790 and take it for a spin! I've ridden my 790s for nearly a year with the only issue being a slight pulsing in the front brake while braking at very slow speeds. Im keeping an eye on that. I recently rode the MABDR and 1600 miles of the TAT and the bike was stellar. Of the 20 plus bikes i've had over the years this is by far the most ridable and comfortable (next to my 990 adv and F800gs). By comparrison the Africa Twin is a nice street bike but doesn't come close to matching the off road capabilities of the 790-and routine mainenance is a nightmare (try getting to the battery on the honda). Now the T7 is another story. If it was available a year ago it would have been a tough choice between it and the KTM.

Really good points. Exactly the review I want to see. I hate electronic Nanny computer settings which no reviewer really goes into those shortcomings. Sorry to see Triumph Tiger Rally resets also. There really is no fix by the customer. The KTM rotors just seem like a horrible trend...surprised my Husky501 doesn't have the problem (maybe because its 2017). I really want to get the Norden, but if KTM doesn't fix their electronics/Rotors, T7 Yamaha starts looking like a better longterm investment which is important to me because I love to keep my bikes for at least 5 years. Brake failure of that magnitude is egregious. If you market a bike as offroad capable there is no excuse for something like that. Highly, highly dangerous, and also totally outside the ethos of long-term reliability if you're taking these bikes places where you can't call AAA to flatbed you home. I cannot believe the amount of play when you wiggled those by hand.

Well dang, Brett... so I went and bought the 2020 “S” model based upon your previous review(s), and now I find all this negativity! ..... seriously, I don't regret my purchase, and I appreciate the new info! I recommend the black dog skid plate. I went with the largely unnecessary hepco-Becker crash bars as well because they look pretty, and I hope they give me about 2 centimeters extra room for my leg, should I ever do a serious low-side. Brett did not mention the "foggy display" issue - moisture trapped under the display. I wouldn't care so much about it except my hyper-critical riding buddy saw it first... my dealer says it turns up quite a bit and that KTM drags their feet about considering it a warranty issue. Pictures were taken and time-stamped should anything serious come of it - like a screen I can't read until the outside temp is considerably above dew point.
The down-time issue Brett mentioned is worth chewing on. Let me put Brett’s gripe in words I would say to my dealer: "I've got less than 5000 miles on the bike, but mechanical problems have kept me off it for over a month and counting." The service interval on the bike is 9000 miles - 3000 more than the R1200GS. Seeing my dealer any more frequently than the service interval because my bike needs more money and time thrown at it would be a disappointment for sure.
So I guess the jury is still out on the overall reliability of the bike. KTM is betting a lot on the advanced user interface they have designed; the location of the bike's center of mass is a tremendous breakthrough for a consumer-class bike; and you get all this at a good price point! The 9000 mile service point would "seal the deal" if that's all there is to owning the bike. Reliability is not a game a manufacturer can easily win, but if KTM can deliver on the 9000 mile service interval, riders like Brett should be the only people to routinely go beyond what the stock bike can be expected to bear up under. So I feel his list of shortcomings - and the downtime they have caused him - is food for thought, but that the issue with rear brake - whether fixed under warranty or not - is a risk I'm willing take. I will be keeping an eye on the play in my rotors, though ...... thanks again for the info you have presented.

After my first ride on the S I still waited for quite some time before putting my cash on the table. Unfortunately no reviews pointed out the items I shared about here. Good for you, mate! I was on the same fence, rode both bikes, hated the ever living crap out of the lame poop MT-07 sewing machine of an engine on T700, hated the weight picking the bike up - and, conversely, loved both of that + electronics + position and control on KTM - so, 790 it was for me.
Aside from the rear brake line recall (done at 1000km/600mi service) - no issues.
Whereas the issues of T700 I've listed - they are its features, you are facing them all the time, vs occasionally some with KTM.
The catch might be, I have a "european" bike, coming with LED blinkers - a slightly different assembly protocol (some assemblies are done more carefully too, e.g. gear linkage), which might be a contributor.
Not gonna lie, the "what if it fails" visits me - but it did so on my previous Versys 650 (where, despite platform's stability, I had to warranty replace valve cap), so hey, that's mental issue of a mechanic, I suppose.

Not many reviews like this as most reviewers only get a bike for a few days so do not see some problems owning the bike long term. My 790 has a long list of warranty issues, some niggles I can live with if it was just the few niggles, some major. You ride your bike way harder than me, I’d be one of the typical slow riders taking your course looking to improve. I’ve come to the conclusion the 790 may be a great bike off road but I’ll never utilise its full capabilities like better riders so once the warranty issues are resolved (impossible to sell before resolved) I’ll be getting rid of it for something on paper not as good off-road as the 790. I have a 690 enduro r and really like it for 90% of the riding that i do. The 10% that I don’t like is highway speeds. This is where the 690 really shows it’s limitations for me. At speeds 70+ the front end starts to feel disconnected from the road. It’s not a wobble. It just feels so light that it feels sketchy. I’m considering trading it in on the 890 adventure r next year. The 690 is so good off-road though and I’ve finally got it set up just the way I wanted it to be. Wish I knew someone with a 890 so I could compare the two. Ive just got into adv riding and I have no idea why yous ride the 1290 and alike they are a big bike with power you really dont need at the end of the day, ive tried a few bikes and im going to get the 23 890r and im pissed about the demo mode but at the end of the day its the perfect bike for what I want to do , while loaded i still want to be able to throw it around and enjoy the ride but i dont thi k i could on those bigger bike , laying it over then busting nuts to get it back up or getting it bogged down and not being able to budge it , im in vic australia and i want to be able to head off to the top end and not have to worry if theres a lot of water on the ground will i get through on the big girl , if i waz only doing 3 or4 day trips i would have gotten something like the 690or the 701 but they just dont cut it for anything else , hopefully im happy with the 23 890r , putting a tower on it so i can have decent gps in front of me so i know where im going and, dont have to stress out when im in the middle of butt fuvk and dont know where i am and the taller screen taking a bit of wind off my chest making those long rides not as draining on the body ... stay safe guys and i enjoy reading everyones imput negative or positive

Thank you for the review - appreciated. I was planning to buy the 890 January for my ride from Vladivostok to Minsk next year July (not using my GS because of its weight) - it's a bit concerning listening to your comments were one to be on the Trans-Siberia and "shit" happens.

Just sold my 390 and got a 790. Very happy even though it's been only 1 day since I've been watching videos of this bike for months in just about every language. A lot, if not all of the negative issues Bret had on this bike, I won't be having simply coz most or all of them happen either off-road, which I won't be doing, or during a stoppie or other crazy acts, also which I won't be doing. And the fact that they are now assembled in China, I hear from a lot of reviewers, you can't tell the difference. Keeping in mind that the BMW F750 motor is also made in China. So no worries, happy days from now on. :)

I think the ABS coming on always is because of law issues. ABS is not mandatory on road so they have to put in on by default...

Is there no one accessable within KTM to get an honest response about these items? Why do we have to stand stand around and have a "guess fest" about how and why the traction control works, (or not) as it does? I really want to buy one of these and am waiting for the 890 but this great discussion is really giving information that is making me reconsider...
How in this day and age do brake rotor bolts loosen, and destroy the caliper on a new bike - and not have it quickly taken care of as a warranty issue!!
I'm sorry for your troubles Brett, but, as posited, by it happening to you with your access to the KTM "public", perhaps KTM will take notice and take action... and if wishes were fishes, we'd all be well fed!

I can relate to this on my 390 Adv. The TC will reset seemingly at random when the bike stalls. I've trie turning the starter switch on/off, turning the key on/off, starting right away or waiting a few seconds, but there is no pattern as to when the TC resets or not. It's very frustrating when climbing a hill as not only do I have to stop the bike from sliding downhill, but I have to get back into the dash settings and then wait several seconds while the TC turns itself off. It's very frustrating and actually dangerous and I've had a few tipovers because of it.

I've had the black screen issue one, though it appears to be the backlight only.

    • @LouisGiliberto

TC will generally reset whenever the engine is started. Maybe it has a few second delay in case we kill it? I made a joke about getting the Rekluse clutch so I can't kill it and fixing the TC reset that way, lol.

OMG! As a KTM rider that is scary. Picked up my 1290 SAR this spring, got 7K km this season with 90% off road, no issues like your having. Lots of KTM software gremlins, Bluetooth says connected but its not, ECU failure (but was still running fine), screen won't come on until it gets warm when temp is below 5C. Thanks so much for the review, I will be checking the brake rotors frequently. Great honest review and side note I like the front fork SENA sticker (hmm isn't that were the reflector goes??).

My very first bike was/is an '83 Honda XL200R I bought a few years ago and I've never had a single issue with it minus a blinker wire come loose. Now I have a 1995 DR350SE that I've had for about a year now and it starts right up every time, although I've had a couple loose wires on this as well but thankfully the kickstart can bypass most electrical issues to at least get me home.
If there's one thing I've learned is the more complex something is the more there is to go haywire. The simpler the bike the better for me, but I do a ton of solo exploring in Oregon and reliability is #1 for me

I had a Friday Scrambler 1200 XE. I feel your frustration. Today’s electronics are messing with reliability. Bikes are spending for too much time in the shop. I considered the 790 and 890 but I think the Tenere 700, being more simplistic, is where I’m headed.

8:30 stands out.. If you buy this bike to ride hard trails, The fact that you can be going downhill and have the ABS to switch to sport mode if you stall is a deal-breaker. I'm sure they did it due to safety or some bullshit requirement but to me that's a software bug or horrible UX decision. not to mention if you hop off your bike and kill the engine for a minute or two you have to reset your setting

yeah i find that really bizarre. I have a 790 R, It must be a USA bike thing, or his in particular. Because I set my settings in rally, ABS everything, leave it and it never changes. I could go fire it up now, and its been sitting 2 weeks, and the settings will remain from the last time I turned the bike off

I leave mine in offroad mode for that reason. It's scary when you hit the dirt and expect the rear tire to lock but instead you get nothing. I can deal with the front ABS but don't want to get caught off guard.
