Hi Garth. Yeah Squirrel Cove has a very fouled bottom. Apparently there is LOTS of rubbish down there. I've been told the bottom looks like matchsticks of logs and probably super old logged refuse (common in many harbours...). The good and bad areas are the subject of Desolation anchorage lore. Sounds like some research is required, perhaps a good idea for a future video! Thanks for the comment and for watching!! Matt
Luv your channel. I also have a Bayliner but a 30 foot Flybridge. We have the same light grey carpet on the walls. I noticed you have the black discoloration that I have. Mildew?? Mold Stain?? Have you ever found anything that cleans it? I have struck out so far but hoping you found some sort of cleaner that takes it out. Any luck??? I don't want to tear it out and replace it but might to get rid of it. Comments???? May have a carpet cleaner come in and see if they can clean it.
BTW, I have two different weeks of vacation to come up to the gulf Islands next summer. Second week in July and the last week in August. Any suggestions on one being less crowded than the other? I'm coming up from the states side. Get to experience Canadian and US Customs. Yippee
Hey Thanks!! Apologies for taking so long to post a reply!!! Yeah, the carpet on the walls (aka monkey fur, rat fur), not the best stuff to keep looking clean. We have tried lots of stuff including the carpet shampooer. The best thing has been Oxy Clean spray with lots of elbow grease... Hope that helps and again; apologies for the slow reply. I've been tied up with many projects lately. More videos are coming soon. Thank you for watching and for the comments/questions. Matt
Second week of july is likely quieter, late August is pretty busy from our experience. We usually head north around second or third week July and things aren't too busy at that time. However when we return from Desolation to Gulf Island in August is seems very busy, even compared Desolation Sound and certainly busier than when we left . With that said, there are always great spots and are a few ways to insure reasonable availability and a good experience. Try to arrive at the anchorage late morning/early afternoon, most people are on the move by 10:30/11AM. Watch the wind forecast detail and the direction of exposure at various anchorages, this is important at many southern gulf island anchorages. Watching the wind forecast may allow you to take advantage places many people usually don't anchor at. We had this happen at Wallace Island on the way back from Desolation this Summer in a strong Northwesterly; Princess Cove was windy and crammed, Conover cove was crammed, the Southern bay at Panther point was empty with not a breath of wind in mid August. As for customs, it has always gone well for us. Using the app makes it pretty smooth. Nexus helps. Timing and specific ports of entry are busier than others. For instance, Bedwell Harbour on South Pender is very busy for Americans clearing into Canada whereas Port of Sidney or furthermore Teshum harbour are less busy but may or may not be as convenient for your cruise plan. How this helps. Thanks for the comments/questions!! Matt
