Lost Camera to Pendrell Sound | EP 67 | Cruising/Boating Pacific Northwest | MV Makena Kai
After arriving at Oyster Cove in Pendrell Sound, we anchor and settle in, ready to appreciate the offerings of this beautiful area. Though I initially have some disappointment with the results of my prawn traps this year, eventually things start to improve. We take pleasure in activities like paddling and swimming while relishing the scenery of one of our top destinations. However, while filming, we unfortunately lose a camera to the depths of Pendrell Sound.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment, and if you enjoyed our video, please give us a thumbs up as it helps us out.
We hope you...

Did MV Makena Kai go out for 2024?
Hey There! Yeah, Makena Kai travelled to many of our favourite anchorages in 2024 including Desolation Sound. No drama or breakdowns, just nice cruising. I am however guilty of not filming/editing for RUclips - no excuses... Okay, maybe a bit of an excuse; posting videos is on my to-do list but what can I say, life is busy these days... Let's see what 2025 brings. Thanks for the comment! Matt
Thank you for the post. Informative and I like all those places but still have Russell on my wish list
Your welcome and thanks for watching!
This was an awesome video. We just got our first cruiser and Montague will be our first overnight! Thank you for sharing your adventures:)
Thanks!! Great to hear your getting into cruising, it’s a great lifestyle and a huge world to explore. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Nice job! Especially on the video and showing the full process.
Glad to hear you got value from the video. Our ice maker is still working great after this repair. Well worth fixing. Thanks for commenting.
Ive missed your posts hope your well G
Hey Garth Awe, thanks!! Yep, all is well with me and the crew. Life has been pretty busy for us this past year. We are still boating on Makena Kai. There are a few new innovations to share. Hopefully we'll have some videos for you all again one of these days!! Cheers! Matt.
@@MVMakenaKai glad to hear all is well G
Great video! Couple of questions for you about your setup... Were you using floating or sinking line with the Anchor Puller? And what diameter is it? The anchor puller site says it's for 3/8 to 5/8" line, but a lot of recreational prawn line is 5/16". Not sure if that extra 1/16" makes any difference.
Hi James, I use sinking line but occasionally I have used a bit of floating line connected to the to the trap and then transition to the sink line after 50' or so. The size of the line is not too important, the clutching mechanism work with just about any line. I most use a fine nylon braid that is under 1/4'. In any case, just try the preferred size line in the anchor lift and make sure the clutch grabs the line. In any case, happy fishing!
thanks for this video, the prawn pulling idea was great, we usually just pull the traps by hand. now I will have to get one of these anchor puller's.
It does work quite well, pretty quick pull. Happy fishing!
This is practically completely worthless. Buch of talk, talk, talk, and barely showed anything of the actual installation. Especially with regard to the actual mounting of the panels on that frame.
Wow! You come off pretty insulting but perhaps that's just who you are. I might have expected some specific questions of interest but I guess not... For anyone with bit of DIY imagination, it's pretty easy to engineer such an installation. The real value here is the concept and a few of the components mentioned. If this is beyond your engineering ability I suggest you find a contractor to perform the work for you.
you could have shown the details of the installation but instead you chose a boring head shot while you spoke to everything. You didn't show any details of the panel installation, not even a full length shot of the horizontal runners of the frame. You didn't show the T connection, and you especially didn't show how you connected the panels to the frame. They should really get there money back for featuring your crappy video on their website. There is nothing anywhere explaining how you use the hey bolt in the narrow space beneath the panels. There, is that enough for you. Worthless.
I stumbled upon your video and I took lots of notes. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Good to hear, I hope it serves you well in your voyage up the strait! Thanks for commenting.
Do you have a link for the compressor, separator, micro filter, regulator and hose

This. We luv ur videos. Heading to some of ur Canadian spots from Skyline next week
Thank you Matt for the detailed recommendation, I will certainly look at all the things you mentioned
No problem, hope you find a boat that best suits your needs.
Would you still recommend after having it a couple of years? One came up for sale in my area with the Cummins engines very tempted to go look at it, anything I should be on the look out? Thanks in advance
Hi Alex Yeah, the 3587 is a great boat and I do still feel that way. Of course, one of the most important things is that the layout fits your needs. No boat is perfect for everything, it just has to meet the most important items on your list. Here are some of the good and not so good things I might suggest for consideration. The good: -Great for several private sleeping areas -Great overall feature list for the boat's size -Dedicated shower, -Two heads (totally independent including holding tanks). might save a trip. -Fits within a 40' slip -Great design for PWN weather, -Great command bridge layout. -Comfortable steps to command bridge (no ladder). -Good solar mounting options -Range with oven -Large fridge/freezer The not so good: -Engine maintenance is cramped (you can still get everywhere you need to). -No aft-low cockpit deck (perhaps better for socializing at docks and raft-ups) but typical for aft-cabin boat. -Lower helm not the greatest for driving (this is true on any sedan bridge). -A lot of steps overall throughout the boat. Final thoughts: Do your surveys. Be sure to give particular attention to the mechanical surveys on the cummins engines (especially the raw water after coolers!). The 6BTA engine needs regular maintenance to the after coolers. I believe they need service every 2 years maximum. Wish you the best of luck in you buy. Cheers! Matt
Love the videos, I went there in my 20 foot boat from Seattle a few years ago was dreaming about a boat I could sleep on.
Yeah, the first time we went to Pendrell was in our 25 footer many years ago. The ability to stay there in nice weather for days consecutively is always a highlight to our overall trip. Absolutely magical!!
The water was 80 degrees when I was there. Swam and jumped off a rope swing next to a super yacht
Yeah, the water there is perfect (or at least as perfect as it can be). Thanks for watching/commenting!
Great tour and what a nice family and family boat you have.
Hey Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed the video.
How do you find longer Bimini tubes. My width is over 8’
Seems to be okay but I would recommend putting a bit of a bend in the middle so it doesn’t sag. Even though I didn’t do that, it works great! Thanks for watching and for the comment!
@@MVMakenaKai Thanks for the reply my question was on sourcing longer Bimini tubes? Love your video.
Great job with the video.
Glad you liked it!
Love Wallace, but I think Mana Island in Fiji was nicer LOL. The PNW is a world class destination, I can be objective and state that as fact.
PNW is all we know but we do really enjoy it. Even now on this evening of Apr 5th as a family anchored in Royal Cove, Portland Island all to ourselves; just gorgeous. But unlike Fiji, you do need some heat on this time of the year…
Your vid’s make me homesick, I’m from Sidney, BC. Currently sailing around the world 🌎 Thailand is home for the next months, we’ll be back soon. I was on G dock right at the end with immigration.
That’s awesome! We love our weekends and summer holidays with minimal commitment boating while staying connected to job, home, school, etc; but committing to a round-the-world trip, lifetime dream!
What magnificent waters! I live on the south coast of Australia, and there are very few anchorages such as you would recognise.
Wow! Southern Australia, that's some serious blue water boating! I did watch Sailing Zatara transit Australia's southern coast a few years ago, very exposed but beautiful. We are as you saw, located in much more protected coastal waters; so many different methods of boating throughout the world... Thank you for watching and appreciate the comments! Matt
Why did you mount the swivel directly to the anchor? Total amateur move. Good way to have your boat end up on the rocks.
I would expect viewer like yourself to be a like-minded boater and as such to comment in a more inquisitive manner. Instead you come off so insulting but I guess that's who you are. When this was filmed I was waiting for a shackle and short piece of stainless chain I had ordered to put between swivel and anchor which I installed the following week. That weekend I was stern-tied in thick mud in a all weather anchorage; I was not concerned about ending up on rocks... It's unfortunately you feel the need to render such judgement but oh well, I'm over it. Hopefully you will get over it one day too.
can you tell me the fuel consumption for both engines and approx cruising speed and top speed. Thanks for the terrific video coverage.
I have no idea of fuel consumption at top speed; we never travel at top speed. At typical speeds (average 8-9 knots) we're at roughly 4 US gallons/hr (15 litres/hr). I have played around a bit with running on one engine going slow on calm days and riding a tide. In the right conditions you can really lower the fuel burn per mile. Thanks for watching, really have to finish some edits on some new content.
Just played it for the first Time. Bought it from Thrift Shop with missing Playing Pawns , so we used the Cluedo Pawns which os more realistic. Also missing Bellhop Coins so we used Poker Tokens and it feels great with tokens sounds. It's a Fun Game. Especially the first Phase where everybody is busy collecting their respective Personal Things. We played with six players so we agreed that the first two players to reach the lifeboat have a choice to wait for another player to reach the lifeboat in exchange of 250$. The richest player to who are safe is the winner. Next time we gonna play it with real key tokens, and real suit case tokens, and real life Vest tokens once we have it. We're planing to frame the board so it's gonna looks like a Framed Ship Blueprint.
That’s awesome, often many games have “great bones” and improvements like you describe really take it to the next level! Sounds like it would be a really fun play!! Thanks for sharing.
The part between the windlass and the bow roller that your wife mentioned at 16mins 30secs, is that a locking plate that the chain should run through? I have a catamaran that I am completing (sadly the builder / owner died before finishing) that has a Lofrans windlass, a bow roller and the other piece that I think is a locking plate that takes the stress off the windlass when the anchor is set. None of these parts are fitted on my catamaran so I'm trying to figure out how the pieces go together. Does that make sense?
Hey Fred (haha). The item you are referring to is a chain stopper (victory-products.com/collections/anchors-anchoring/products/mh8631404) The chain stopper is okay... For us I'm not sure it is all that useful. I would not advise using it to unload the chain from the windlass mainly because it's minimal contact area to the deck, it might actually be better to let the windlass take the load. I usually choose to use a pair of dock lines shackled to a snubber plate. I then attach each of these dock lines to each of the front quarter cleats. This does a great job distributing the load and unloads the windlass. In my opinion the only useful purpose the chain stopper provides is for securing the anchor when stowed but it really isn't that necessary with my windlass. It would be a great addition if you have a free-fall type windlass. Hope that helps and thanks for commenting!! Matt
Thanks for the replay Matt.@@MVMakenaKai
That anchor failed in testing. Why would you give bad advice.
That sounds like an overly opinionated comment... Our anchor failed at what legitimate testing? Do you actually have any of your own anchor suggestions and why? I have seen various tests with many kinds of anchors online; there are many disagreeable methods. I've watched one guy ploughing the ocean floor by throttling up a large outboard with massive sustained pulls. Some might feel this is the perfect test for an anchor. I think this is entertaining but not necessarily an accurate test of a good anchor. The trouble with the anchors that do best in these tests are often also the same anchors that get damaged (bending) easier in some anchorages. I would rather have an anchor that is still a good anchor but perhaps give up some of the performance for durability. I have come to the conclusion that actual experiences using an anchor in practical boating situations is a better way to judge the performance. Real world anchoring differs significantly from many of the tests I've seen people do online. Boats rarely pull sustained; boats wag back and forth, the catenary curve provides much of the shock loading before sustained pulling is ever experienced. I have been using the Lewmar Epsilon for nearly two years now and it has not let me down once. Whether it's been in gale or storm force winds and an additional larger boat tied alongside with wind shifting direction or strong side loading while being stern tied; not an issue yet and we almost always anchor out. The Lewmar Epsilon performs very similarly to the Rocna Vulcan we had previously as our primary anchor. Could these anchors be out performed by another anchor, sure... But we have been very happy with both of these anchors and this is far from being what you have stated as "bad advice".
svpanope. Mr Goodwin consistently tests anchors in different conditions. I bought a boat with a lewmar delta anchor and it would not hold in many conditions causing me to replace it immediately. This new anchor holds better but not by much. Considering what a failure results in there is no room for mistakes
Look up Steve Goodwin tests. It's very insightful
That you replied is a good sign. I will subscribe thanks
I have to agree with you on the Delta, I don't think they offer any extraordinary performance beyond any of the old generation anchors. Funny, svpanope is the exact testing (at least some of the testing) I don't fully agree with. I don't disagree with all of his theory but I feel with the brute force method of high output sustained thrust with a large outboard just doesn't seem like an accurate simulation of anchoring except perhaps blue water cruiser in a hurricane. This level of testing doesn't seem applicable most boating situations. This seemed most evident in testing of weighted spade styled anchors. With my experience of real-world usage, the spade styled anchors work really well and are more durable than many of anchors that rate best in his tests. In svpanope's tests, so many anchors appear with such poor ratings where in reality it just isn't true or fully understood by all who watch but everyone's locations and conditions vary a lot so who knows... I appreciate your views and thank you watching, commenting, subbing. This might make some good discussion points in a future video perhaps. Thanks and be safe! Matt
Hey guys, we just uploaded an episode where we ran into you at Squirrel Cove in 2022. Gave you a shout out. Hope all is well. Looking forward to some more vids. @barloventosailing
Thank you for posting this. I will need to do this job myself on my Bayliner 3788 very soon.
Okay, I just finished binge watching all of your videos, I'm ready for more. I live on the peninsula and it's great to see all the beautiful areas surrounding me. I've never had a boat so I don't get to see most of these places that you travel to.
Wow, that's awesome!! That's a fair bit of content to view through! I do have some stored raw video to edit from this past boating season. It is encouraging to get a message requesting more videos. Now that the rainy weather is here it is a good time to get back to some editing and get some new videos published. I have one that is pretty close, I'll make some efforts to get some new content uploaded soon. Thank you for watching and reaching out with your comment! Matt
Like the story I’m going down the road of boat ownership What a pain Finding the boat is the easy part 40 + ft Finding a slip for it is another story In Washington state
Thanks!! Boat searching, negotiating, buying (and everything else) is such an uncoordinated chain of events. It is a pain but also can be kinda of exciting sometimes. Moorage seems to be a issue most places these days, especially in the PNW and Southwest Canada. Of course if going through a broker to buy you may be able the get immediate moorage unlike many private sales. In any case, thanks for the comment and wish you the best on your boat search! Matt
Hello from one of your neighbors at your marina, we walk by your boat to get to ours .cheers
Nice! Maybe we'll see you around one of these days. Cheers!! Matt
Thanks for the tour! I had originally read Once Upon an island back in the early 70s in just rereading it now, so it's interesting seeing the actual Island so many years after they wrote about it.
Such a great local story! Thanks for the comment.
Great info 👍
Thanks for watching!!
Hi, I am on Salt Spring dealing with the same problem... How did you end up clearing it and getting to decently stable idle and full throttle?
Remove the carb. Remove float bowl. Remove plate off metering circuits. Remove rubber plug from float bowl side. Remove primary and secondary jets. Remove main discharge tube(below primary jet). Blow carb cleaner fluid through all passages. Blow out all passages, jets, discharge tube with compressed air (from a real air compressor). Reassemble and reinstall. Adjust linkage as required. Adjust air idle mixture screw and coordinate that with the idle speed stop adjustment. Done, that should do it. I missed having an air blower for my compressor at the time, your really have to blow out all passages really well!! Best of luck! Matt
Hello, I'm having the same issue. Thanks for the video - I'm going to try to take the carburetor apart tomorrow. How did you end up fixing it - did you make another video? Thank you, Best regards, Victor
Did you just stop posting? Would like to see more videos. Our boat was down for the count with a fuel injector issue this summer so was living the boating life through youtube.. Boat works now but the weather here in Washington is heading to nasty. Time to put our boat to sleep until Spring.
Yeah, it has been a while since posting the last video. I do have a fair bit raw video that I intend to make some more videos from, its just been a busy year... I'm hoping with heading into fall I may find more time to get to some edits and bring more ideas to content to be published on our channel. It's always nice to hear when someone gets enjoyment or value from the videos. Thank you for the comments and I hope you have a better cruising season next year. Cheers!! Matt
Your tutorial is like a ray of hope for all the owners.
Appreciate the comment! I'm glad to say the U-Line is working perfect over two years after this repair. Thanks for watching!! Matt
Hallo from 4087 Bayliner owner from Ukraine. It's so good to be able to sail. We are having war here. My boat is idle for two years already.
Hello to you in Ukraine! As boaters, we value the ability to go cruising in our boats. I feel in the Pacific Northwest (and many places); we sometimes may take these opportunities for granted. We never should! Your comment reminds me of this. Being out on the water is far from being a necessary part of life however it feeds the soul and mind. Some of our most enjoyable moments are spent there. I wish the best for you and Ukraine and hope you all get through the war as soon as possible. Thank you so much for commenting, it is great to hear from you; and from the heart - please take care!! Matt
@@MVMakenaKai, thank You very much for your sympathy. I did not expect such deep words and been touched by yours. We are watching American boat tours everyday and dream of cruising on our own boat some day. Thank You very much for friendly warm wishes!
I truly hope you are freed from your oppressors. This is a disgraceful war of aggression by the z. I wish you and your family safety and prosperity
Always enjoy your videos
Thanks!!
Hi guys, nice to see a local cruising channel. My all time favorite is Cabbage Island, it has the most interesting conglomerate rock formations on the north side. But beware of the NW winds, they can ruin your visit and always seem to come up in the middle of the night (making it not a favorite of my wife's). We have been chased out of there more than a few times. As for your choices, they are all good spots to explore.
Thanks for the comment Dave. Cabbage Island is a great spot and totally agree with you regarding the weather but if you nail the right forecast you can be rewarded with an overnight stay. Tumbo Island is a great spot to explore while there. Cheers!! Matt
What an awesome sight!!
Sure was! These sightings are becoming more frequent but they are always so rewarding!!
I live in Duncan and finally bought my first boat. I am very excited to try out some island hopping with my family this summer. Thanks for the awesome video!
Boating is a great recreation in this area. Hope you enjoy and have a great Summer! Cheers!! Matt
Good information, thank you. 🏴☠️
Glad it was helpful and thank you for the comment! Matt
Sorry! I gotta ask….. you didn’t accidentally make that closet out of oak first, did you?
Nope. is original with the ultra thin cedar veneer laminate. I did add a melamine shelf to the forward closet. Cheers!! Matt
Awesome work! and boat Matt! I should’ve gave, at least a small hint, that I was referencing the movie “Overboard” where Kurt Russell rebuilt a closet out of oak, but was asked to redo it because of a concern for moths lol. Again, amazing boat and thanks for the tour! I hope to get one someday.
Just spent a couple days at Russell island for the first time. What an amazingly beauiful spot. Thanks for the recommendation. Hope you guys are having great summer.
Hi Paul, Happy Canada Day! Nice to hear you enjoyed Russel. So far so good for this Summer, we’re heading north soon for our big trip of the year. Thanks for the comment. Take care and be safe! Matt
@@MVMakenaKai Great to hear! How far north? Desolation? Or further....?
Beautiful spot! Any idea how the protection would be with a northwest?
Hi There, It is a neat spot and I do plan to go back one of these days. The weekend we were there the winds were pretty light. It certainly would be good in a Southeasterly but I would be a bit apprehensive in a strong westerly or northwesterly. Although there isn't much fetch I have a feeling the wind may whistle down the valley from Lyall Harbour. Hopefully this helps some decision making. Thanks for watching and the comment, cheers!! Matt
Thanks for creating this video. Great job
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment!
Thank you for this. So informative. Where do you get your nav charts on Van Island?
You are so welcome! The charts used in the video are digital versions of the CHS (Canadian Hydrographic Service) raster charts. I like them because they are the same look as the paper charts. Thanks for the comment and for watching! Matt
If you guys are up this way again this season my husband and I would love to check out your boat and enjoy an anchorage or two with you (on our own boat, not yours lol). We are located in Powell River.
Hi Danni Yeah, sounds like fun. It's always nice meeting new people, especially when they're boaters! We're planning on being in the Desolation area in the second half of July/early August. We usually try to do some real-time updates on Instagram from day to day when we're on the water and often communicate through messenger. Feel free to reach out to us if you want to try to line up at an anchorage. Thanks for watching and the comment!! Cheers! Matt
Thanks for video , what is the part number?
Good Call! Not sure why I didn't put it in the description to start with (apologies...). Also, since installing it 2 years ago it is still working perfectly. Anyway, I have updated the description and pasted the link below. Thanks for commenting/asking.
