    I'm really enjoying this short series of videos and I think I have learned a lot about opal already. I only mean that as far as the hydrophane goes and the fact that the Welo opal has colour all the way through it and not just in a seam. So, I can get a lot more colour for my money if I buy Welo. What is the difference between Welo opal that you want to keep dry and other Ethiopian opal that you have to keep in water? Thanks again for these videos

      @ElieGhanimeEG Год назад

      Personally I don't keep any opal in water, the reason people leave in water is to show the colors and sell the product, the colors of the Welo opal will disappear if it's in water and it will make it hard to cut and polish, so I don't recommend that, the other Ethiopian opal is the brown opal, that type has a lot of cracks in it and you would lose a lot of material.

    Part ll of your OUTSTANDING TUTORIALS. Talking about Cracks, hmm, can one see the cracks using a Jewelers Loup / Magnification and can one easily see the crack/s with the naked eye? Would it okay to clean the Wello Opal with a Dremel/Flex shaft before cutting and polishing it?

    Now correct me if I am wrong. I have heard and then seen Ethiopian Wello Opals that they are said to be BLACK OPAL on You Tube and on the Net?

    Two down one to go. Thanks for the tip on using the tool holder to secure your dop nail. In addition to putting your links below the videos I have seen that you can actually put the hot link right on the video. This seems to work great when doing a series so as one finishes you can just mouse over and click the link to go directly to the next video in sequence. Question: How do you find and buy smaller lots of rough opal?

    Now what is your expert opinion of Peruvian Pink Opals? What is the BEST SOUTH AMERICAN OPAL? Reason for my questions is because my wife ROSIE/of 49yrs-Opal is her Birthstone.

    thank you for the great video, i'm on my way to no.3 now, but i was hoping you could give some help on where i can find a good source for Ethiopian Welo Rough, that wont craze, I had tried 4 sellers on ebay, buying 1 opal each in the 100 carat range, all were from India, all 4 sellers did the exact same thing and sent me a different opal then the one i thought i was buying that was listed and pictured on there ebay store. What i received was a opal that was soaked in scented oil, and the opal was crazed, the oil did a pretty good job hiding the cracks but each day that it was left out of the oil it worsened, i believe all 4 sellers may be tied together or maybe even the same person, anyway i stand to lose $500 as all 4 opals were crazed, sorry to go on like this but i am at a loss on were i can find a trust worthy seller with some good ethiopian welo opal to purchase, can people buy direct from miners? its such a beautiful opal and want to cut some for investment and resele. thank you so much for any help you can give,
    regards johnt. i liked, i subscribed 2 u channel, :)

      You were sold non-hydrophane ethiopian opal, which comes from a different location to the welo opal and is very unstable. Much of this material has a yellowish or greenish-dark base, or even a jet black base color, some with completely clear regions. yes its usually treated with an oil-like substance to stabilize it and hide cracks. Once cut though its a rare piece that doesn't craze immediately. The only solution is to buy rough from a reputable seller that stands by their product. They are easy to find on facebook.
