The scene where Ubbe stepped up when Ragnar kept bellowing "Who wants to be king?" showed a genuine pride in Ragnar's eyes when he looked at Ubbe. With both Bjorn and Ivar, it felt like he was pushing them in a direction. When they left Rollo in the battlefield, he immediately turned to Bjorn and called him Ironside. Encouraging him to be a strong force of a man, similar to Rollo. When Ragnar knew he was gonna die, he turned to Ivar and made sure Ivar finishes Ragnar's vengeance against Ecbert. He didn't really choose Ivar because he truly believed Ivar to be his successor. He chose Ivar because he knew his son's inherent anger and his potential to be ruthless. That moment when Ragnar hugged Ubbe for stepping up to him. That was genuine. He wasn't really asking anyone to he the "next" king. He just wanted to intimidate everyone to regain his people's trust. But of everyone shaken from Ragnar's intimidation, Ubbe stood straight to face his father. Not because Ubbe wanted to be king. He stepped up simply because he had to. Ragnar was similar in his younger years. A mere farmer who stepped up because he had to. When Ragnar hugged Ubbe, it felt like a genuine "It makes me glad that you stood up against me." And what did Ubbe do throughout the series? He stood up to anyone, even his brothers because he had to. When everyone wanted war, he stood up and told them Ragnar would have wanted peace. And, boy, was he right. Ragnar's vengeance ended with Ecbert. But Bjorn and Ivar chased for more. Ubbe knew they were done.

Part of the reason Ivar was so ruthless was because in his time that was the way to survive. From the moment he was born people wanted him dead. As a young man people took advantage of him (Sigurd, Freydis, Oleg). Ivar was not a good man but he was Viking and he died Viking, and he lasted as long as he did because he manipulated many into fearing him. He was ruthless because for his chosen way of life that was rhe only way he could possibly stay alive.

Bjorn had an army already, so Ragnar already knew his son's would seek revenge for his death. Ivar played a big role in the TV show. Same with Ubbe and Bjorn. Each son fulfilled Ragnar's legacy in their own ways. Ubbe found new land to build and flourish, Bjorn became the first real king all of Scandinavia and preserved Kattegat, and Ivar became the best most strategic & fearless warrior/leader on the battlefield and was the main reason why they were able to defeat two biggest kingdoms in Wessex.

Lagertha sealed her own fate, and ivar's brothers (aslaugs others sons that is) betrayed the memory of their mother and they betrayed their brother ivar when he needed their support. The true legacy of Ragnar was the future and the preserving of his people their culture and religion, and that's why he actually chose Ivar, because he knew that hard days are coming, and the fact that Ivar was still alive till that point even though he was crippled, was the biggest proof of his ruthlessness.
I disagree. Ragnar told Ivar this because it was what ivar needed to hear, and because Ragnar felt sorry for him, guilty for almost killing him, and because he had no idea what a monster he truly is. Ivar shows hints of humanity throughout the series, but in each and every instance....it is selfish. For himself. For his own desires. For his own retribution or pride. Ivar is a truly despicable character.

But Bjorn, out of necessity, chose his mother. While Ivar risked his death to go raiding with a disgraced father. Ivar and Bjorn are both Ragnar's legacy, but Ragnar was closer to Ivar at the end of his life.
Ragnar approached Ivar last about going with him to England. He said that stuff to him when he was caught because it appealed to Ivar’s ego and would get him to leave and come back with the great army for revenge. If Ivar stays and dies, he dies a pointless death.

To leave a legacy and a dynasty that would echo for years, but was flawed from the start. Just as no man could healthily contain so much power, no child could be born healthy to Ivar the Boneless.
I’d say this guy is right, ubbe made his dreams come true, in a way so did hvitserk, But Ivar definitely didn’t. We all love Ragnar but by the time he went on that trip he was ready to die and had been through so much. He asked all of them to go with him, Ivar turned out to be the best for revenge, and for a chance to escape. But bjorn would’ve made young ragnars dreams come true if he wasn’t fighting off Ivar the rest of the series.

Ivar being cripple would always be looked at as such. Therefore he has to be wild and unpredictable. If all his sons were equally born then we all know Bjorn is the real heir of Ragnars legacy.
He said what he had to to light the fire underneath him...each son had their own interpretation of their fathers legacy...he saw what was inside Ivar and used it.
It’s up to interpretation but I think the thing many viewers misinterpreted is that Ragnar had many plans for what would happen after his death. And that much is clear because his actions leading up to his demise put all of his sons in positions to replace what he did as king. He also specifically chose Ivar to come to England with him because he knew he would die, he also knew that if Ivar had witnessed the way the Saxons were going to treat Ragnar, he would be the most motivated to go back and inform everyone that it’s time for war. Ubbe was always going to follow in Ragnar’s steps directly and I think that’s why he never made it a point to tell him what to do. Hivetserk and Sigurd were never on Ragnar’s radar and as such they struggled, strayed from the family and one of them even got killed for that.

Maybe I am wrong but Ivar helping overthrow King Oleg with his brother and Prince Igor probably gaurunteed that Russia would not invade them at least as long as Igor is alive. Also it would have been good for trade with Prince Igor and Ivar they would have been able to join nations or at least help and trade with one another. Remember the future King of Russia loved Ivar. Remember what the Jarl said that Ragnar defeated in fair combat at the beginning of the series he said we will raid towards Russia. Because of Ivars doing that would no longer be an issue.

The scene where Ubbe stepped up when Ragnar kept bellowing "Who wants to be king?" showed a genuine pride in Ragnar's eyes when he looked at Ubbe. With both Bjorn and Ivar, it felt like he was pushing them in a direction. When they left Rollo in the battlefield, he immediately turned to Bjorn and called him Ironside. Encouraging him to be a strong force of a man, similar to Rollo. When Ragnar knew he was gonna die, he turned to Ivar and made sure Ivar finishes Ragnar's vengeance against Ecbert. He didn't really choose Ivar because he truly believed Ivar to be his successor. He chose Ivar because he knew his son's inherent anger and his potential to be ruthless.
That moment when Ragnar hugged Ubbe for stepping up to him. That was genuine. He wasn't really asking anyone to he the "next" king. He just wanted to intimidate everyone to regain his people's trust. But of everyone shaken from Ragnar's intimidation, Ubbe stood straight to face his father. Not because Ubbe wanted to be king. He stepped up simply because he had to. Ragnar was similar in his younger years. A mere farmer who stepped up because he had to. When Ragnar hugged Ubbe, it felt like a genuine "It makes me glad that you stood up against me."
And what did Ubbe do throughout the series? He stood up to anyone, even his brothers because he had to. When everyone wanted war, he stood up and told them Ragnar would have wanted peace. And, boy, was he right. Ragnar's vengeance ended with Ecbert. But Bjorn and Ivar chased for more. Ubbe knew they were done.

Part of the reason Ivar was so ruthless was because in his time that was the way to survive. From the moment he was born people wanted him dead. As a young man people took advantage of him (Sigurd, Freydis, Oleg). Ragnar told him that to prepare him for the world and Ivars life to come. His other sons didn’t need to be savage and pep talked into imaging that they’re special. Ivar being cripple would always be looked at as such. Therefore he has to be wild and unpredictable. If all his sons were equally born then we all know Bjorn is the real heir of Ragnars legacy.

It’s up to interpretation but I think the thing many viewers misinterpreted is that Ragnar had many plans for what would happen after his death. And that much is clear because his actions leading up to his demise put all of his sons in positions to replace what he did as king. He also specifically chose Ivar to come to England with him because he knew he would die, he also knew that if Ivar had witnessed the way the Saxons were going to treat Ragnar, he would be the most motivated to go back and inform everyone that it’s time for war.
Ubbe was always going to follow in Ragnar’s steps directly and I think that’s why he never made it a point to tell him what to do. Hivetserk and Sigurd were never on Ragnar’s radar and as such they struggled, strayed from the family and one of them even got killed for that.
Ragnar tested about his sons ability how they developed on their age. He saw every details on his sons for being a king ,warrior ,adventurer or emperor. Ragnar was Fearless, warm and kind heart ,smart, tactical like a chess player, courious. A perfect viking warrior and king. He has a inner proud to them so he knew about their declines for travelling to England . So he decided ivar and taught him while asking a question to his 4 brothers . Ivar was one of my favorites but i also hate him because he killed for not great reasons
Ubbe made peace and settled, Bjorn was an amazing man who made many discoveries (lets face facts PLUNDERED 😂 ) but a brave warrior and Ivar kept the name of Ragnar a name to fear even in death... i know Ivar was a lunatic but his dark side really came through after Ragnar was killed in the pit... he truely was a machine hell bent on vengeance and considering he had a horrific bone disease (as an ankylosing spondylitis/brittal bone sufferer i can kinda relate) if the story is true to facts despite his setback he still became one of if not the most ruthless and cunning Viking that ever lived 2nd only to Ragnar himself..

I’m sure Ragnar would approve of everything ivar has done except for the killing of Sigurd. Ragnar told ivar to use his anger intelligently but with Sigurd he was thoughtless, careless, and emotional and it cost them all their brother

In real life, Sigurd was said to have been Ragnar favorite son. It’s so cringe how they killed him in the TV show but it is what it is. Character development for Ivar meant more to them than anything
It was just tough for Bjorn to accept that Ivar actually had a strength that he and the rest of the brothers didn’t have
Ragnar only wanted to inspire his son. It was only after coming to england that ragnar saw ivar’s potential, but also that he could inspire the revenge in ivar to return w his brothers to destroy england. He didnt really have a choice.
Ragnar told certain thing Ivar because he was the only one who did go with him of all of Ragnar's sons not because he believed it. At the end his depression made him think emotionally because he had nothing anymore

Maybe I am wrong but Ivar helping overthrow King Oleg with his brother and Prince Igor probably gaurunteed that Russia would not invade them at least as long as Igor is alive. Also it would have been good for trade with Prince Igor and Ivar they would have been able to join nations or at least help and trade with one another. Remember the future King of Russia loved Ivar. Remember what the Jarl said that Ragnar defeated in fair combat at the beginning of the series he said we will raid towards Russia. Because of Ivars doing that would no longer be an issue.
Well that’s wrong. Ragnar asked Bjorn to go to England and Bjorn refused. Ivar was the last resort.

The only reason he took ivar wasn't because he chose anyone but only because he wanted to manipulate him into bringing revenge upon the saxons by raising the great heathen army...all this leadership stuff was useless to him..the man just wanted revenge for his settlement destruction

Ragnar isn't stupid. He knew for certain Bjorn wouldn't go because he knew Bjorn had duties and plans. He knew Sigurd resented him. He knew Ubbe wouldn't go either.
He had a multitude of reasons.

@@imperialdragon111 ragnar came with plans without knowing much about what his sons thought of him. Before coming he didn’t know Bjorn planned on voyaging elsewhere, he only found that out after coming.

When Ragnar returned, only Ivar was happy about it. You could see what all of the other sons thought about Ragnar.

Ubbe was more of the farmer side, he baptized to get land to farm, a sacrifice Ragnar would've understood.
Bjorn was one wanting to explore lands, as did Ragnar wanting to go west.
Ivar was the one who continued being Viking like until he went mad with power.
Hvitserk was the opposite of Ragnar, Ragnar had many sons but Hvitserk had many lovers that were killed so he had Ragnars heart.
Sigurd has Ragnars mouth and in the show he died to Ivar but irl died to a king if I remember right.
But Bjorn and Icar's discussion in the clip, Ivar was right, Ragnar chose him because he knew he was too old and weak to lead a great army, the sacrifice they needed to win in their conquest for Revenge, was him, he died a tortuous death. They said if you go through the blood eagle or any tortuous death in season one or two of the show and don't scream in pain you'll go to valhalla, and Ragnar didnt.

Thank you kind sir. Dying in battle is most common and some believe it to be only way, but in one story Baldur, Odins son got into valhalla bit he didnt die in battle
Ragnar was desperate to be loved again, he chose Iva last... Of all his son's... Ragnar would say anything to anyone to be loved again, Bjorn wasn't wrong.
Not to mention during somewhat of the beginning of the show when Ragnar asked about all of his sons and if he'd ever see burn again he said that who is he talking about who would surpass him as the greatest Viking of all time and he said I was talking about Bjorn so again this is a lie
Yet ubbe was underestimated and achieved the dream
All ragnar ever wanted was to live a simple life as a farmer with his family
