The Ariya has a liquid cooled battery, I think it will be much better at getting rid of heat. I sure heated up a LEAF Plus a lot more than him but I did 4 rapid charges in a day
I think i would spend the night at a campsite & charge over night. Probably not much more expensive than 1 or 2 extra charge stops, plus adding less heat to the battery.
Just to let you know I did a significantly longer trip in one day 21 hours actually. My third fast charge I hit rapidgate 19.5 kw and it was just touching first red bar, 4th fast charge it hit 55C almost 2nd temp bar but still 19.5kw limit. So I did heat my poor SV Plus too much. I had trouble getting rid of heat as well. I got it below red in an hour over a high (cool) mountain pass about an hour in but still hot. Your advice is good. I found you based on my rapidgating my plus this week. I actually did a short 5th charge as well.
Don't you think that the B mode in a highway increase battery temp? Because instead of free rolling when you want to decrease speed you instantly throw lots of amps because the car aggressively spots even when you let away a throttle pedal for a sec
Yes & no, regen will waste energy compared to freerolling & use that momentum to get up next hill & result in more charging & more heat build up. But not always possible in the real world. That being said after driving 80k km i my 30kw Leaf, driving i B mode do not get you as far as the combo of D mode (most of the time), B mode (down steep decents) & Neutral (down small hills to get up most of next)
You are right, D mode is better for highway efficiency since regen is not wanted when at high speeds. Better to slow down using air and rolling resistance.
What pressure did you have in your e+ tires? Its way more heavy than 40kWh-version. When you sleep in Nissans turning off the center display saves 100-150Watts, so you come down from 444W. Sleeping in an Evalia costs you 25% of 24kWh battery = 5,25kWh.
I don't see rapid gate being an issue in most situations... even you said you could have trickle charged over night instead of rapid charge. It's a problem for sure. But one most people will not necessarily face... I'd imagine you could even be a 10 hours a day taxi with these things and not deal with rapid gate as most city driving is 60km or less.
Yeah, no problem for a taxi really. The main issue is long distance inter-city travel. These are perfect for taxis, hence why they are in widespread use.
wow, what a surprise. In real life, 99% of the people won't even expecience rapidgate in the 62kwh Leaf even on longer trips just like Bjorn mentioned in his last vid. Plus you safe 450€ every 3 years of battery cooler fluid. 62kwh Leaf owners have many reasons to be satisfied with this car. Price including rabatte is very good, too.
Wrong, the passive cooling also lets the battery degrade faster. Not good for the environment and your wallet. The passive cooling is a fail... If you drive on the Autobahn or in very hot climate, its a disaster. Very bad EV.
The Leaf is a city car not a travel car. It will do travel but you have to expect stopping more often. When you do few travel in a year that ok else go for an another EV with more range (but also more $$$).
@@gRASp80 Maybe for you, but i saw a Leaf in Asia, Bjørn showed it to us, it had about 80% degradation, only 20% of the capacity was left. The owner was left alone with the costs i think. Disgusting EV, i would ban it. Destroying the battery so fast because they wanted to save 5 bucks for active cooling is a sin for the environment. Never ever will i see the leaf as a good EV. A good EV has good cooling and heating for the battery in winter. A good EV has a perfectly working, wide spread charging network. Leaf has nothing, absolutely nothing. Or in short: Very very bad EV.
Heelo mr. Byorn. What are your thoughts of having some 50kw DCFC in the ferries. Cars are parked there for about ,20-30 mins. That would be perfect time to get 40-50% charge while travelling. What could be problems for ferries or charging network for this opportunity charging installation?
It would be too expensive. The best way is to have a battery on the ferry which charges during docking. Easiest and best way is to spend the left-over time to charge like I did.
I drove a leaf a few months ago; the dealer was in the car with me and I asked him if E-Pedal and B mode were mutually exclusive and if ECO could be used with either of them ... He gave me a look that told me he didn't had a clue, so I thought I'd ask someone who knows
Isn't this Nissan LEAF 62 KWH much better adjusted for use mostly in Northern Norway? The reason I think so is Norway even at very North does not get too cold like Finnland or Sweden.
@@mariuskotsbak also in Germany, no Problems so far, Trips until 750km... As Björn said, for this car in real life Rapidgate is not a common problem. 99.9% of your trips don't go that far anyway. It's a great car when it comes to price / value at least the "street prices" here in germany are pretty good.
If you don't go on long road trips it's probably fine. But for the price I think there are several alternatives with better battery technology (active cooling).

Hi, how do you keep the car running during the night? Do you keep it in neutral mode? Normally it turns off after some minutes if you keep it on Parking mode?!
I see you haven't received a reply. It's ok. I feel it is a bit slow to recognise the road lines, but once it does it handles just fine. The weird part is i feel it sometimes handles steep curves and sometimes it just gives up and want to drive over the middle line. ACC works almost perfectly. It has phantom braked one time in the 10.000km I've driven it. Other than that it works like any other lane-assist and ACC enabled car, I would assume.
What would the 2nd day have been like if the outside temp was 30-35C vs. 20C? The battery got quite toasty on a normal summer day in Norway, but there are many places where 30+ ambient is the norm this time of year. When exposed to long distance travel, this is a northern climate only car - be very patient if you intend to use it for multi-day trips? Can’t wait to see that Ariya - lots of “needs improvement” boxes checked when designing that one, perhaps putting Nissan back in the game?
Check this video ruclips.net/video/3OS3RUNQxWs/видео.html and fast forward it to 14 min 05 sec. This is long time journey with 40kWh Leaf in Japan in 37 degrees C. The 62kWh leaf would handle it probably a bit better but still this looks like battery torture.
@@WTFaq you're right about that advice, it's really good advice, but Bjorn is right in the regard of those fossil haters, which claim that they regularly (like at least once a week) they do travel more than 1000km, and of course, ideally without any stops at all, because stops are for loosers, yes! :D
@@apocrypth I know guy that do every week or so trips little over 1050 km on one tank in golf 4 tdi in almost one go, minus pee pauses. 9-10 hour drive. He would go nuts if he must drive electric car. For this type of people, diesels with ok-ish tank volume is must.
the outside temperature was not that high, maybe it's fine in Norwegian climate. But in hot climate zones you just can't use the leaf. For that price that Nissan is asking its not acceptable
Don't drive in B mode or pro pilot. Higher Regen Higher Heat. Humans can anticipate longer range than cruise control so you only speed up when really necessary.
Thats nothing compared to Japan ¥4,200 (364 NOK) subscription fee per month plus ¥15 (1.3 NOK) per minute max 30 minutes to the only charging network in Japan no competition here
Nope, Nissan has not learned anything from their previous mistakes. Their batteries are still not thermally managed and this leads to excessive degredation and slow charging speeds. I owned a leaf for five years in northern USA and it was still too hot in this relatively cool climate for the car in the summer.

Before changing charger you should let the car fall asleep and try same charger again. Then if the error is still there you can change.

Leafs really aren't suitable for anywhere as they don't tolerate the heat or cold well. It makes me wonder where Nissan designed them to operate? 🤔

RSD Wall , electricity on a ferry would be only from fossil fuel?

How about places to charge the cars while you wait and the ferry operator pays for some power from the cars. Unless it's a nuclear powered ferry.
I've noticed that the lights were completely off while you were sleeping in the car. How can you turn them off while the car is idling?

e-Pedal overrides B mode, so no difference between D and B with e-pedal on. Eco mode can be used in D, B and e-pedal modes

R P it wouldn’t make any difference. Whatever cooling you do has to be routed around the battery cells in the pack to have any impact.
Leaf is ok but price for what you get is too much 62kw should be around 25k €

5.7 NOK is pretty expensive, in my country is equivalent to 2.7 NOK + 0.26 NOK/min. In Norwegian is somewhat expensive to drive EV.
This is with rapidgate. In ideal conditions, you get away with only 3.5 NOK/kWh.
