For new sewist, I’m 65 years old and have been sewing over 55 years. As a reference, I made wedding dresses in the 80s to supplement our income. I have seam ripper’s in every room of my house. I have one in my car and in my desk at work. No matter the experience, mistakes happen. Don’t stop sewing because you make a mistake. There is a learning curve to sewing, so be patient with yourself and persevere.
You are doing a beautiful job young lady. As a fashion designer I am very proud that someone is taking on this challenge. It's easy to draw design or garment. But how to construct that garment put it together from start to beginning after the sketch is so important. So I am just loving your RUclips channel beautiful well done. Best of luck in the future❤❤❤
I’ve experienced sewing and fitting as 2 separate and distinct skills to acquire. As I’ve sewn for at least 50+ years, fitting and fashion and fitting your own body aren’t the same skill set as making a nice set of trousers or how to match fabric and pattern. And yes, the seam ripper is still always in reach 😂
Right. I sew simple things. I gave up clothes because of this reason. But...i am going to try something new. Fins something i like the waybit fits..and use that clothing as my pattern. Lol
I’ve been sewing for many years and use these great tips, although I usually make wearable muslins in fabric similar to the one I will use for the final project. In addition to body measurements, I also take flat pattern measurements which help with placement of bust darts, etc. When making fit adjustments, I think it’s best to make one adjustment at a time. Machine basting, trying the garment on, and checking the fit before sewing permanent seams have helped me avoid some mistakes. And keeping a seam ripper on hand certainly helps, too. Thanks for these great tips, Brittany!
I am so glad to have come across your video. My sister and I purchased new sewing machines last year because wanted to make quilts and so far, so good. I have always wanted to see if I could make a blouse. I’m heading to your beginner videos now. Thank you.
Ah these all spoke to me! I never liked making a muslin, but having been pregnant, postpartum, and now pregnant again these last 2.5 years, the importance of both making a muslin and taking measurements is not lost on me! (Also, any advice you have for sewing for this season of life, I will gladly take!) Thank you for these and all that you do for the sewing community! ❤
Great advice on all levels. Like some others in the comments, I,too have been sewing for 50+ years. The one step I need to be more diligent in doing is making a muslin. This would improve my fit 100%. Thank you for the advice and the references.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Happy New Year. This is excellent, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I can so relate on all you shared especially cutting into your fabric without making a muslin. I’ve learned the hard way few years back, never again.
Thank you for this video. A lot of great tips. Especially making the muslin. That is one that I definitely have to change my mindset about as well. Hope you and your family are having a great start to the new year. 💜
I’ve been sewing for over 40 years and have just wrapped my head around making a muslin. When I first started sewing, I was able to sew garments straight out the envelope.
Brittany!!!!!!!!! So you are talking about everything that I have said to myself today. I started my new project and did a muslin, which I normally do, but I do not make the adjustments I need to a garment. I feel bad that I waited this long to truly look at fit and pay attention to the details of fit.
I still have not managed to get better at fitting. I realized there is ease in the garments but I find it hard to know how much is there or how much to take away. I also get hung up on what fabric I want to use. Thanks for this video with great recommendations for how to improve.
I started back sewing in 2018, and I've made muslins ever since. I actually enjoy them because I truly believe in "just sewing" once I cut my good fabric. I made a habit of purchasing inexpensive fabric and label them as Muslin Only. As always, thanks for sharing. Happy New Year🎉
Love that you buy inexpensive fabric just for muslins only. I'm getting into making them year and excited to see how my garments will fit even better. Thanks for watching!
I’ve been sewing for many years, but since retiring and watching videos, I’ve learned new techniques and stitches 😂😂😂😂. I’m excited about fitting now and have muslin (used for making pillows and bags) to practice with. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏🏽🥰.
Love these these objectives Brittany. They are very similar to what I wish to accomplish in my own creative endeavors for 2025 as a sewist. Thank you so much for sharing your suggested textbooks on measurement and fittings. I need to purchase a couple and this is a great start. May you accomplish all your desires in this New Year. Blessings everyone. 🎆🥂🪡🙏🏼👏🏻🙂
Hey-great tips!! :+) I had a chuckle when you mentioned feeling the fabrics!! I cannot go into a fabric or clothing store without feeling the fabrics!! I touch everything I am drawn to-I believe it is Essential!! I have been sewing for 55 years-you Never can learn Too much about your craft!! It is always nice to see you and your smile!! :+) God Speed.
What is a muslin? I’m new to sewing and I’ve heard it before but no one shows the process of making it or where to buy it. Anyone have any resources to learn how to make a proper one?
Hey Naomi. A muslin is a test garment made from muslin fabric that is used to test patterns and fit before cutting and stitching the final product. Muslin is a lightweight, breathable, and soft cotton fabric. You can find it in Joann, any fabric store and online from Amazon. You can use a cheaper fabric or buy muslin to sew a test garment. So you’re just making the garment you want in a cheaper fabric or muslin to test fit before sewing the garment in the final maybe more expensive fabric.
How do I make a pair of bell bottom jeans fit in length without cutting half of the big bell off? I'm only 5 ft tall and the jeans are 4-6 inches too long. I'm desperate to. Learn how to do this.
