I Finally Get What Paper Mario Fans have been Saying All This Time | The Thousand Year Door

  • Growing up I've played a majority of the games in the Paper Mario series, although I never really went in depth or finish any of them outside of the origami king. Online, I've seen fans praise the original games for being amazing RPG's and the newer games just can't hold a candle to the earlier games. Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami king received good reviews from critics, but fans not so much. Guess Nintendo is listening and remade The Thousand Year Door for the Nintendo Switch. Now that I've played everything the game had to offer, I finally understand why OG fans want this style to return to the series. Bring Back Unique Allies like Goombella, Bobbery and Vivian. New Locations in the series, and the intricate battle system. With Super Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door, and a new Mario & Luigi game releasing on Switch, Mario RPG fans are living the dream.

For me TTYD is not only the best battle system of Paper Mario, or of Mario RPG games; it's the best system for RPGs in general that I've played. Specially the badge system. It lets me play the way I want, using self-imposed challenges like "what if I can't use these badges, but do these instead?", then I have to adapt my strategies. Plus, the small countable numbers are so much better than other RPGs. I can truly optimize my plays and I love it! Perfect RPG = plenty of strategy + decent amount of action + sprinkle of luck.
Sure I may be biased, as someone who 100% N64 Paper Mario 4 times.

One of the best aspects of TTYD is the lives of the residents of Rogueport. As you go through the chapters you watch a broken family of Toads repair their relationship. Podley once had a relationship with Eve in Twilight Town. You can even talk to Lahla and learn her interests and dreams for the future.

They really sharpened the "many memorable moments"-style of the modern games by the time of Origami King(I mean, just look at all the ways Mario can just die brutally for instance, lmao. While you do get some points for Special Moves for doing well on action commands, interacting with the audience by doing stylish moves and appealing gives you more. It adds an extra layer to the combat that I've yet to see elsewhere, even more so when some bosses interact with them, too (like Hooktail eating them to heal once).

Growing up I played both the original TTYD and Super Paper Mario, having gotten pretty far in both but not completed either (I think it was always the last area that gave me trouble? Not gonna say either names here due to spoilers but both are pretty dark "royal" locations). Both times I had so much fun with the adventure I wondered if finishing the game was worth it if it meant separating myself from that fun crew and leave that entire adventure behind (one of my biggest fears in games is enjoying the finale only for it to not matter because the postgame is like "oh you thought that was cool? Bruh that never even happened lmao", leading me to almost never finish RPGs in fear of that).
With Super I would later come back to the game just fine and actively find out that it wasn't the case there either (I first found out I wouldn't have to worry about that in this series when I played the N64 game last and was pleasantly surprised with a postgame actually taking place AFTER the game), and I could fully enjoy the worlds I once traversed in a hurry and find out how things have held up since I saved said entire world. The grandiose adventure with all the new friends I had made along the way was worth it, and that feeling was one I rediscovered here with the TTYD remake (I had put off the original due to the aforementioned fear as well as struggling to get past a certain obstacle in the last area)-- every ounce of that grandiose adventure was still there for me to freely roam around, talk to the folks that were important to my journey before and see how things have held up since, while still enjoying extra challenges (both ones from the og game and ones new to the remake) to take advantage of the game's interesting combat mechanics.
This is the Paper Mario I've always known and loved. The big, adventurous Mario RPG series that feel like Mario's fun world being given the depth of Zelda's. None of that wannabe arts-&-craft BS where the only folks I could talk to were the same generic Toad designs ad nauseam like Sticker Star had me experience (no matter how much its two successor tried to improve things; sadly you can't remove a feeling of cheapness like that easily).
This is the kind of Mario world I want to see-- no "it's actually just a stage play" or "it was a dream" loopholes, and no "haha this world is paper!" immersion-breaking humor, just a real living world that happens to be the wacky Mario universe. Just like its brethren Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi, and I think all three deserve to coexist due to their different but equally as good takes.
Mario RPG set the groundwork for such an excellent idea, PM brought it to life even further with more partners willing to join and have their own arcs as well as even more ambitious storylines in general, and M&L brought its own comedic storytelling into the mix by just being a quirky but fun adventure.
My favorite partner is the Yoshi kid, followed by Koops. Both have been an amazing aid in combat (Koops especially helping with the Pit of 100 Trials while Yoshi was amazing at bosses), and I do find Koops to have a solid arc of mustering up strength by going on a journey with Mario to be a satisfying character development. The Yoshi Kid is one I really enjoyed the interactions with due to the rough style of speaking he has (which btw is another highlight of every partner; Goombella is sassy af, Koops and Vivian are both more bashful, Flurrie talks in a way that's so rosy it can become hilarious in certain contexts ["gibiers de potence" in the French version upon beating the Shadow Sirens for the second time LMFAO], Bobbery with the sailor speech in general, even Ms Mowz has unique lines befitting her flirtatious thief image), but just the idea of having gotten the egg (which is mysteriously multicolored unlike regular Yoshi eggs) always raised the interesting question of "who's child is this" imo (and if our unfortunate circumstances of hatching him in the middle of a gladiator pit isn't exactly a good parenting strat. '^^).
I got the default green Yoshi due to how fast I was trying to go through the Glitz Pit by optimizing every fight. I named him Yo'ster in reference to the name of Yoshi's Island in the original localization of Super Mario RPG, and have this fun little headcanon where he might be related to the Yoshi (Mario's best bud) from Super Mario World and the spinoffs, just ended up separated due to circumstances (the egg moving on its own could've lead to an unfortunate timing of him getting onto a ship leaving the original island or smth).

Glad you like the original Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
And since you plan on playing the first Paper Mario game, I would also recommend playing Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling
A game that Paper Mario fans claims as the true successor of the first two Paper Mario games. I recommend that since that game shared the same “paper aesthetic,” great characters and interesting story
It’s hard to choose my favourite party member, but I do want Nintendo using these characters more. If Toadette, a character who first originated from Paper Mario, remained relevant and used throughout the various Mario spin-offs. I don’t see why the same can’t happen with Goombella, Koops, Flurrie etc
To my knowledge Nintendo made these games, therefore shouldn’t have any legal issues like Geno and Mallow
As for my Yoshi I got an orange one. I wasn’t really picky which color I got, it just happened. I named them “Oranjshi” which is a combination of both orange and Yoshi. And fun little pun to Japanese word for Orange “oranji”

From then on, i was always green on replays simply because knowing what to do and keeping relatively consistent strategies resulted in a very consistent time frame that aligned with it. I am hoping the randomization is a bit more random in the remake (even if just shortening the windows so minor quirks of each battle change the consistency enough to change colors), but i havent taken the plunge yet, though i likely will if nothing new catches my eye soon.

Lackilester is still vastly different from Yoshi Partner. It isn't like Goomba, Koopa, & Bobomb Partners where the abilities are nearly identical. Yoshi's Flutter Jump functions like Parakarry's Overworld Skill while his in battle moves seem fairly unique.

@@WaterKirby1994 yeah, i said i didnt have the context of 64 at the time, it was just funny in hindsight. The 2 are vastly different, but the roles each plays in the overworld are similar. Lakilester and Parakarry were merged into 1 monster- yoshi kid. movement "boost" of lakilester, gap crossing of parakarry, making yoshi the ultimate movement machine which just makes sense.
It was less "they are the same picture" and more "the partner to mechanically replace lakilester is yoshi", with the latter creating an ironic joke on myself since lakilester prefers the name spike, which was the name i gave to yoshi. You took that minor point a bit too seriously. XD

      @cullenlatham2366 6 дней назад

@@WaterKirby1994 you are getting a bit pedantic over what was at best a minor point. the field abilities of 64 reappear in ttyd in different ways. Yes, spindash and quick spin were the fast movement in 64, but the function of lakilester was transportation, meaning speed and hazard flight. Hazard fight need doesnt really show itself in ttyd, and the closest we get are what the paper "curses" are for. Yes, lakilester is outclassed by spinning, but that doesnt change the fact that he is intended to add speed so as to not need to spam the button. Speed and ride is what yoshi adopted. vivian adopted bow's invisibility in a new form. the goombas, koopas, and bobombs share abilities. watt and mz mouse do the same thing in different ways. Parakarry was a tagalong only used to cross gaps, so they gave the ability to yoshi instead. I dont know what i could be missing from 64 field abilities to explain the "evolved" replacements of ttyd.
Yoshi and Lakilester share the same field role across the games, but yoshi does the transporting job better since you dont need to randomly swap away to parakarry just to cross a small gap before switching back. In both cases, i rarely bother with their transporting just because it complicates other matters like first strikes and simply not finding the transitions between riding and dismounting to be woth the time save in most instances, especially as someone who enjoys going after a complete tattle log by my own efforts. the time to swap partners is the real reason i dont bother, but it doesnt change the fact that their functions overlap.
Heck, it is a much weaker case, but the connection can even be stretched into their combat roles to some extent. mini-egg instead of dodgy fog (inconsistent dodges or simply reducing the damage mario takes by making enemies inflict less) and spike storm and stampede, but all of this is just me being a bit petty trying to prove a point i never really intended to prove to begin with, only express as A JOKE. You look a bit too deep into the comparison just to ruin the joke, and my explaining of it doesnt help, either. The connection is weak, even i can admit that, but if i need a connection, it was the best i could do. I am done over-explaining the joke, though, so dont expect any more replies.

The Mario RPG gimmick is that you can press buttons with good timing to do more and take less damage. It sounds minimal, but it matters a lot - non-Mario RPGs, when you get stuck, it's level up, get lucky, or find some strong/cheesy strat, but Mario makes you go "man if I had only hit a few more action commands" and run it back and try to play better.

2:15 I think they completely messed up the fighting sysetm. And I think there would have been an easy fix. Instead of a repetitive puzzle game, they could just have made it an actual strategic fighting game. The simplest change would be this: Just leave all attacks as they are. Make it possible to know how much damage each attack does. Don't have the one perfect solution. Just spread them randomly on the board. And especially don't reward the player with twice the damage output for lining up perfectly. The enemies being lined up perfectly should be reward enough.
And then it could be expanded from there by adding attacks or items which hiit a specific shapes on the board. For example one complete circle, or a boms on 3×3 grid. Also extra move items seems like a good idea.
The boss battles already were much better in my opinion. There wasn't the one perfect solution (or at least it wasn't that obvious).
It was more like coming up with the best route oneself. And maybe these routes were intended, but it wasn't that obvious. And there often were multiple routes.

Fun fact, TTYD is the true first Paper Mario game. The original was actually going to be Super Mario RPG 2 (there's even a scrapped title screen in the game's files), but Rare was bought out only halfway through development, so the game had to vastly change. That's also why the art style for it is so different, and is at times derivative of other Mario titles, it was essentially to save time and resources. The "Paper Mario" title was a western translation error even, and Nintendo only committed to that title because while it didn't sell that well in Japan, it was a massive hit with western audiences.
Even then, you could tell they wanted to make the TTYD feel like a sequel to the original, and just have a few cheeky nods to what was originally just a mistake - like the gimmicky gameplay was the last thing they leaned into to make the subseries feel unique to anything else Mario. Modern Paper Mario games however, are the opposite, their gimmick is immediately in your face, baked into the story, world, characters, etc. Just the titles and box art alone give off a different vibe.

if you want to compare keep it fair and dont compare 2 games with 2 main lines and a 3rd with 1 main line and 1 spinoff its not the same
apart from that great video i myself only really completed super paper mario which i loved but never could get myself to play either paper mario or ttyd fully but im finally taking my time to complete the remake of ttyd and i have been enjoying it so far and i hope they do the same with the first one and god forbid go back to that formula going forward with the series

I see what you mean with Super Metroid to Prime, the way I see it is taking the gameplay of Metroid from 2d to 3d was a big leap and making it first person had people raise an eyebrow at the time, not to mention retro was an unknown studio at the time too. They could've attempted making it third person for example but instead focus on being behind the visor of Samus Aran, and including features like the scanning feature. In reality I should've compared prime to other M for example as that change in gameplay was more drastic, or bring up federation force. Besides that I'm glad you liked the video and hope you have fun with the rest of TTYD it's a lot of fun.

Lit fat is pretty good, but Nezuko for a pink yoshi I really like.

This video is amazing and it captures the same vibe i had when i played the remake.
Like, exactly the same. I was watching all those Paper Mario Fans talking about bringing back TTYD and the original formula but i never got to understand it completely, just a itsy bit of it. Most i did was watching Color Splash and i really liked it for the fun writing and use of the characters, and i did attempt playing TTYD once but never got past the first hour of gameplay. When the remake announced i screamed, i couldn't believe it- I was genuinely excited for how the game looked and the things it put onto the table, I was hyped on the few days countdown before the remake released, and when it did- I quickly got it and it did not dissapoint in the slightest.
This game kept me and my friend HOOKED wanting to play more and more of the story and never wanting to stop, and when the story was about to be done i really didn't want it to be over- So after finishing i jumped back in and did all the missing stuff to get it to the 100%, and somehow- I still want more! (Which is why i'm considering playing Paper Mario 64 or Paper Jam.)
No other game ever had me this excited for adventure and a story, it really beat the expectations which were pretty high. I adore it and i can't wait for Nintendo to make more of this- I'd genuinely make me very happy.
Oh, and about the last two questions of the video- My favorite partner was Vivian (kept her around for a very long while and experienced a bunch of the major cutscenes with her), and my Yoshi was green and my friend and i named it "Axew" because of the Dragon Pokémon in Gen 5.
A beautiful experience that i genuinely recommend to everyone I know, even the fellow reader checking these comments!

TTYD on Switch is a remaster, not a remake. Some of the same bugs occur from the original, along with many copy/pasted animations between the versions. Those prove all Nintendo did was update the old game code instead of "remaking" by coding from scratch in a new engine. Same glitches = same code = not a remake.

You got blue on your play, too?
I didn't bother watching the time when I had my egg, choosing to leave his color to chance, so I didn't really have a name planned out either. So when I got my blue boy, I just looked up online what "blue" is in Italian and...named him Blu. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Goombella should have been in Mario Kart games as a Paper Mario Representative & an Assist Trophy in Smash Ultimate where she tattles fighters.
