      Why did you say "Protestants"?
      Why not "people"?
I think Tim presents things in an exceedingly sensitive and humble way, in deference any who perhaps have been scalded by past experience in church or Bible study.
In this passage, he is talking about getting over oneself, to be able to have fertile soil for planting God's word.
I actually (my fault) grow a little impatient with his forbearance with students who have not yet let go of their wounds. I understand it, and I'm grateful for his sensitivity. But I'm also very glad in this passage that he effectively is telling people to leave their baggage at the door.

    • @Ricca_Day

So as a protesting Protestant, I see that a couple of folks are confused by your statement. For clarification, the Protestant community has huge issues with the Authority of the RCC, which has permeated the discourse between the respective camps for over 500 years. “We” have thrown out so much of the basis for the practice of our faiths, that we have been dividing the Truth under the premise of finding it. This conflict has been more political than spiritual in many ways, with both sides maintaining arguments against one another’s doctrines and practices. Over the last several years, I’ve tried to recognize that our ancestors have let our “Revolutionary” mindsets from the 1700s be our underpinning guides in the attempt to establish a State “free” from the oppressive system of Royal entitlements and distant obligations in the name of Philosophy, which supplanted the Concept of fealty to Heaven… by rebranding it to the Rule of Natural Law.
We modern Protestants are blinded by such branding, imho, forgetting sometimes that our particular observations have detached from the Root of our Faith, over the course of time, and that the division is self-inflicted by our own egoism and opinions that are frequently no less presumptuous than many of the beliefs that permitted the rift in the first place.
Politics should not be the arbiter of our faith anymore now than it would’ve been 2000 years ago. I sometimes wonder what our Lord would say about us for deviating so much so that we have been willing to kill one another to be heard, but then I just go back to the words of Jesus, and it’s all there. Our duty is to the Father in Heaven, to ourselves and neighbors and then to the lost, the struggling and towards our enemies.
It’s so easy to forget how simple God’s version of Faith actually Is.
“ Do justly, love mercy… walk humbly with your God.”___ Micah 6:8

The denomination I grew up in did not teach me to read the Bible to understand it but to confirm the ideas they wanted to promote. This left me with a very shallow and pretty useless faith.
I was challenged to prove some very basic concepts I held dear such as proving Jeaus was the Messiah. I took up the challenge and really read the Bible for the first time. I learned who the Messiah was and what he taught. I kept seeing things he taught or did that I not only didn't do but... no one I knew did.
I began to walk in the same manner as my Messiah and... I was told I was working for my salvation. It has not always been an easy path but I have grown closer and closer to my God, my Messiah, and the spirit that guides me.
The one thing that has stuck with me all these years is that Jesus said he would tell the lawless he didn't know them. I don't suggest keeping the law for salvation as that won't work. However, if you keep the law because you are saved then that is following the Messiah.

70000 lost their right to life on Earth. The evil one was winning his battle for supremacy over the Earth. But that’s not their biggest problem… please read this carefully to the end.
2 Samuel 24 is at the point in human history where the whole world, except Israel, is under the domination of the evil one. The evil one had tricked Eve - and Adam had joined her - into subjecting themselves and all their offspring to the power of death. The evil one wanted them all gone from the earth.
But God instituted substitutionary atonement and preserved humanity. But, they were still dominated by the evil one.

Israel was uniquely in covenant with The Most High God. Their strict adherence to His detailed covenant conditions was what prevented the evil one dominating them completely and wielding the weapon of death against them. The moment they turned against God - ignoring / rebelling against / turning away from His ways - they left themselves vulnerable to the curse of sin and death.
God’s atonement - ie, covering - was achieved through blood:- an innocent animal giving up its life in their place.
This was only a temporary atonement. It was a thousand years later in history that Jesus brought permanent/eternal atonement through His death… and redemption from the power of death and deliverance from the evil one’s domination.
Please don’t forget that someone who leaves Earth doesn’t leave their life behind. We say they die. God doesn’t. He calls that ‘sleep’.
He calls death the ‘second death’ - resulting from His final judgement of all of Adam and Eve’s offspring. Only through the spilled innocent blood of Jesus’ sinless life are we covered eternally, redeemed from the curse of sin and death forever and delivered from the evil one’s domination.
I hope this long winded answer gives you some insight into the historical context of that OT narrative.

Actually, I’d argue that the Talmudic writings are like Supreme Court Decisions. They provide arguments for and against the subject at hand, and there are Always differing opinions. Nothing definitive. Just attorneys doing what they do, because after the Babylonian Captivity, there weren’t any intact traditions, because everything was Temple/Jerusalem centric from around 1000-400 years before the birth of Yeshua, and after the Exile, the priesthood had become more of a legislative body attempting to reconcile their faith in the absence of their Focal Point and ritual practices.
What emerges beyond the Captivity is a reflection of this process, so much so that the purpose for Israel regarding the Law, was rather like an open courtroom that was always in debate and closing arguments, rather than an definitive Verdict.
The Talmud presents us with an opportunity to examine the different perspectives on the Law of Moses, but those are important for understanding the Human process, far more than the Divine… imho.

Don’t get me wrong. Not going to hell is definitely important, but it’s not the singular Point of Salvation.. although it can be certainly be argued. I was raised Baptist, and 50 years ago, we “got saved” every Sunday, because that was the emphasis. No complaints about that, but to grow in Christ, the process is more than just recognizing our position as sinners apart from our repentance.
This gentleman seeks to help us grow. That’s enough for one soul to undertake. There’s nothing wrong with a little more Grace from one source, because there’s always someone to preach the Hellfire.

@Ricca_Day its all part of the Gospel. Thats how i see it, so he glosses over one crucial point of the gospel. Thats a red flag, but we do need more grace and love emphasis I agree.

Lol! Talk about being out of context!
You are literally judging Against G0D by using a colloquial tradition and laws of conduct that were the practice of generations of humans across the world. This is a fallacious argument, brother. The only purpose for this is to set yourself Above G0D through your own perception of what is right and wrong within a world you know nothing about. I don’t argue that human life is valuable regardless of the status of an individual, but Property Law isn’t about human life at all, and neither does it confer any type of moral certitude. It is just the penalty for actions beyond the scope of acceptable behavior.
So, if I’m incorrect about my conclusions about your motives… apologies, but you’re attempting to Discredit my Creator, Christ and Redeemer using irrelevant material that was a Social Norm or even higher standard than the world at large for the vast majority of human history. That’s covert egoism, not a viable argument against the Lord or anyone else.
      Tsk, tsk, huh?

@@briceyboy88 I spent plenty of time contemplating in my life. The result was realizing how much time I wasted in church. Spirituality is a langue, in that you are supposed to be in a community to communicate spirituality. That community was a cesspool, full of judgemental, hate filled individuals whose moral bankruptcy and lack of faith contrasted horribly with their projected piousness and stone-casting attitudes. I am a better person, and find myself among better people since I stopped calling myself a christian.
