You can also invert a funnel near the magnet itself and tape it in place on the rope. This can help it slide over potential snags

Awesome job explaining everything - the tip with wrapping your rope as a solid handle for your bucket is legit helpful when the plastic handle inevitably breaks. Plus the wood and hammer trick was great. Subscribed for more of them mad tips and tricks.

This was amazing, thank you so much. My 5 year old has started obsessively watching fishing videos and magnet fishing has crept in. (I'm an aquarist so I was ok with the new found fishing interest even tho I've never been a fan of actual fishing) Id already seen a few magnet fishing vids prior and was intrigued. This was a perfect intro for me to decide on what to use for a starter kit and start exploring with my son!

Thanks for the video. Looks like a fun hobby. No telling what's out there waiting to be found.
I use paracord for a lot of things. Started using it with our kayaks. When I tie a knot, I leave an extra 1 1/2" tail out of the knot and sew the hell out of it to the cord itself, then slide heat shrink tubing down over that and shrink it around the end that I sewed up to cover the 1 1/2" tail. It'll never fray or get caught and makes for a nice looking connection.
My grandson just got interested in magnet fishing, so we found a couple old speaker magnets and let him play. Instead of finding anything more than a couple tiny fish hooks, he came home with pictures and videos of a baby gator that was nearby. Yikes! Where there are babies... there is a mama!

Just looking into the magnet fishing idea. I live in Florida and have some old bridges in my area, so I'll start there. I have friends with cats, so I'll ask for a kitty litter square plastic bucket. I have have lots of water proof gloves and a 50' plastic rope. After getting the hanging magnet, I'll buy the 100" rope. Thanks for the video.

I see you using a cat litter bucket. And it looks like it works great. However, I don't have a cat or a cat litter bucket. I just received my magnetic fishing rig from Amazon and am yet to drop it in. I plan to use a 5 gal. bucket as my keeper. I am still deciding where to set my eye-bolt. Side mounted or top mounted. I plan to m-fish from a dock so, I feel top mounted will be my best bet.
Thank you for the video. I, seriously, learned more from it than I have any other.
Happy M-fishing and best wishes, Reynaldo H.

  • @magnaman1963

I noticed that you tie your knots to your carabiners and not your magnets... while i understand that it makes changing the rope from one magnet to another but in my limited experience using the carabiner especially in the single sided magnet leads to problems of the carabiner attaching to the magnet itself further throwing off the angle of the magnet... Ropes are cheap why not just tie the rope to your eye bolt (I use the Palomar knot because I am lazy lol). and while the kitty litter bucket you tie your rope around is nice, I like the big round 5 gallon buckets (I got around the suction issue when stacking multiple buckets during trips out to magnet fish by drilling a hole in the bottom. keeps that suction thing from happening and allows for drainage when I start filling them up with wet stuff. anyhow, great video, I envy you your subscriber numbers lol if you feel up to it I have some magnet fishing instructional videos up myself feel free to head over and check them out (they arent as pro as yours as I am on a fixed income and dont have a gopro (yet) One final comment... your grappling hook scares me lol... seriously. I had one of those larger ones that come in higher end BIG magnet kits and I got into soooo much trouble with it... I am sorry I lost it but not really... when that sucker latches onto something that refuses to come off? well, lets just say I had to use my 4x4 to try and get them free LOL

I've been having my interest peaked by this. Been thinking of starting because I already go out fishing at my local rivers and think to myself about how much I could find in the waters using magnets. There's this one spot where everyone loses quite a bit of lures and that would probably be my first spot I check if I actually get started. Though it is a rocky spot, have you ever had any troubles with rocky bottoms? Magnet getting stuck and not really being able to retrieve it?

So I haven’t actually went fishing with my magnets. What I have figured out. It depends on the thickness of the metal. I’ve stuck my 500 pound magnet to a beam at work. All 185 pounds of myself could hang off it. As someone else said in the comments. Invert a funnel and slide it over the rope before the magnet. There’s videos out there explaining how to do this.
