It’s supposed to be satirical of beauty and fashion, but it blew up into a worldwide pop hit.
Right Said Fred is comprised of the buff brothers Richard and Fred Fairbrass, and at the time, guitarist Rob Manzoli. The Fairbrass Brothers were managers at a London dance studio called the Dance Attic, where they came across lots of narcissism and posing. As Rich Fairbrass tells it, they had a loop playing on the computer, and inspired by his dance studio experience he spontaneously took his shirt off and started singing, "I'm too sexy for my shirt." The guys thought it was hilarious and worked up the song around the phrase. A demo found its way to the ears of a music promoter named Guy Holmes, who contacted the band, had them remix the song into a dance track (it was originally a rocker), and shopped it to record labels. Holmes had no takers so he set up his own label, Tug Records, and released the song, which became a huge hit once the BBC started playing it. Peace out.
Great explanation, I was kind of there. One bit you missed was that it was Tommy D remixed and put the break in - that's where it got really great. Really nice guys too.
My favorite part is when he just stops singing and walks off because he's "too sexy for this song."
My favorite part is when they say their too sexy for the mandates.
That's one song that takes absolute confidence to perform
As someone who spent time hanging out and people watching in dance clubs during those years, I have to say this song was one of the great epic trolls of all time. The people it was taunting loved it.
So freaking hilarious after all these years
Could you play this loudly in your car without looking like you crave anal sex with another man? I thought that's what it was about. Leather vest wearing domination type of activities occuring within an RV in the YMCA parking lot.
Wait... That IS what you meant by hilarious. I just now got that. It took me a while because I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to liking women, and all that.
This and "Barbie Girl" by Aqua were two parody songs making fun of the vain and superficial that a shockingly large number of people thought they were being serious.
It's only gotten worse.
If you listen to "Barbie Girl", the version on Postmodern Jukebox is fantastic. Much better than the original IMO.
@@Trifler500 It's a really good sing that a lot of people just didn't get!
Yea it's clearly not meant 2 be taken seriously.
@@scottwilson3741 Even their name is taken from the opening line of a 1962 comedy song by Bernard Cribbins.
“I do my little turn on the catwalk ..” That’s the funniest part of the song to me.
“I’m too sexy for my cat"
20 years ago the bridesmaids at my wife's an my wedding walked down the isle to this song. We got a big laugh. This song is awesome.
I was in high school when this song came out and remember one day one of my classmates walked into pre calculus and saw we had a substitute teacher. He immediately started singing this very loudly while climbing up onto the desk, did the first verse, skipped right to the second chorus because he wanted to get to "shake his little tush on the catwalk" before getting sent to the see the principal.
Glad to hear someone else annoyed their teachers with this song in HS..
Thats what we call winning detention
This song was played non-stop it was everywhere.
A fun song that nobody took seriously in the early 90's - Richard Faibrass and his brother were taking a 'swipe' (taking the pi$$) at the posers and narcissists who visited a gym that they were running... They were too sexy for everything as they posed in front of the mirrored gym walls.
🤣 so funny. Something we can all relate to !
Funny thing i used to go to there gym and didnt realise that 🤔😂
That is not true. This is a serious song about Fred and Richard Fairbrass being to sexy. I to was too sexy. But them days are long gone.
Vin diesel stole their image
They're English, this was their first single and it was huge - stayed at no.2 in the UK for six weeks behind Brian Adams' monster hit, but went to no.1 in 32 countries, including the U.S. They were just having a laugh and the lead singer is actually a really funny guy who didn't take himself seriously. Their next two singles aren't as well known, but got to no.3 and no.1.
Insanely huge!! It was EVERYWHERE!!!!
I've always heard these guys were DJ's and were just making fun of models who are full of themselves.
@@redarmysoja The Fairbrass brothers ran a gym frequented by lots of posers and Richard (the lead singer) took off his shirt and started singing this song that he made up on the spot. They then went on to record it as an indie rock song before a DJ friend mixed it into the resulting smash hit.
Vin diesel stole their image.
First time I saw vin diesel i said "One of those I'm too sexy singers is an actor now, his like in a legit action movie"
@@daz_n OK, thanks, been a long time, couldn't remember exactly.
you know brad is going to accidentally start to sing this when he is working, cleaning or cooking.
With his sexy mesh shirt on...😄
LOL This song was the BOMB 30 yrs ago. Glad someone got around to suggesting it.
This is a fun song to play, while driving donuts in the snow with a Pontiac Fiero..
Fieros are so fun! My friend had one with a 383 stroker in it, and that car was terrifying.
@@fatwhiteguy795 They are so much fun. I've owned two and still have dreams about them..
@@fatwhiteguy795 that's terrifying to even think about. Mine was fun enough with a little 4 banger in it
Like an oversized go-kart
When you can see merging traffic…from UNDER the guardrail!
The guitar riff is from " third stone from the sun" by Jimi Hendrix
Yep @1:21
Holy shit just realized that
Holy crap dude. I never realized that til now. Did you pick that up on your own or read it somewhere?
On the CD single, there's a dedication to Jimi Hendrix :-)
It was made to make fun of models, fashion and people wrapped up in thierself, He poked fun at it and thats what makes its so good. and great voice and its got a great beat and everyone loves to use the Im too sexy for different things
Everyone I know sang I’m too sexy for my shirt. Guys, girls, family members. It’s just iconic to me. 😂
Whenever I hear this song it brings back some kinda core memory and I geek out. It makes me remember when a DJ at a local rock radio station to me back in the late 90's got fired for locking himself in the studio and playing this song on repeat for 3 hours straight. They had to bust the door in and dragged him out which you heard live. Love this song.
You can hate this song on so many levels, but you can't actually hate this :) it is exactly what it is and means. Enjoy!
this song NEVER gets old
Always seemed pretty gay to me
Lex sure remembers that outfit. As she should! This is such a fun song.
This was one of those songs that became ridiculously more popular then it should have been. Probably because it was obnoxiously fun.
Brad!!The shirt AND the shiny green tight pants! You go!!! 🤣🕺🏼
I can’t believe you guys never heard this damn song.😂
Lex was like look at all the beef cake! And Brad was like so this is what that song was about!
4:15 Waaaahahahaha!!! Everybody funny now you funny too.
This was probably the best song to come out of 1991. I still sing it when i want to annoy my wife.
I think this is the first time I've heard the entire song. So much fun! 😂
From novelty pop songs to world leading pandemic experts in 30 years.
"deeply dippy" Right Said Fred" had some good fun shit.
Yay, I love this song so much! Loved dancing to it - it was goofy. And I think he sounds like Elmer Fudd!
I wouldn’t worry about that shirt if I was wearing those pants Brad
From the same era of British Gay bands try Frankie Goes to Hollywood , Relax , Two Tribes , power of love , these were all big hits
when this MTv people didn't know what to think. people were backing up until they got the joke. these guys are lampooning the models and the industry. this has been featured in so many shows or movies. people applaud wildly now.
Their name "Right Said Fred" is taken from a English comedy song of that title performed by a highly-regarded English character actor Bernard Cribbins, which was recorded at the Abbey Road studios in 1962. The song about three removals men who are trying to get a large, mysterious, un-named piece of furniture into an apartment, was a substantial hit in Britain. The producer was George Martin who, of course, was within a few months, to become the Beatles influential record producer.
Lyrics:
"Right, " said Fred, "Both of us together
One each end and steady as we go."
Tried to shift it, couldn't even lift it
We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea and
"Right, " said Fred, "Give a shout for Charlie."
Up comes Charlie from the floor below
After strainin', heavin' and complainin'
We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea
And Charlie had a think, and he thought we ought to take off all the handles
And the things wot held the candles
But it did no good, well I never thought it would
"All right, " said Fred, "Have to take the feet off
To get them feet off wouldn't take a mo"
Took its feet off, even took the seat off
Should have got us somewhere but no!
So Fred said, "Let's have another cuppa tea"
And we said, "right-o."
"Alright, " said Fred, "Have to take the door off
Need more space to shift the so-and-so."
Had bad twinges taking off the hinges
And it got us nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea and
"Right, " said Fred, "Have to take the wall down
That there wall is gonna have to go."
Took the wall down, even with it all down
We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea
And Charlie had a think, and he said, "Look, Fred
I've got a sort of feelin'
If we remove the ceiling
With a rope or two we could drop the blighter through."
"All right, " said Fred, climbing up a ladder
With his crowbar gave a mighty blow
Was he in trouble, half a ton of rubble landed on the top of his dome
So Charlie and me had another cuppa tea
And then we went home
I said to Charlie, "We'll just have to leave it
Standing on the landing, that's all
You see the trouble with Fred is, he's too hasty
You'll never get nowhere if you're too hasty."
Ah..interesting trivia! 😆👍🏻
I remember hearing this on Top of The Pops and finding it hilarious. It was 1992 apparently, I was sure it was late 80's (88/89).
It's not a great song but it's fun and when you hear it a lot for 30 years it grows on you!!
1991 :D
Lex is incredible. I am 56 y.o. and she likes the same songs that I did 35 years ago. National treasure.
This is one of those songs. You know the kind whether you love it or haaaate it, as I do, it will get stuck in your dang head! And now it will be stuck in mine, thanks a lot lol
Oh God, this damn song. Couldn't get away from it when it came out! At least I haven't seen anyone in the comments here saying how "criminally underrated" they are and that they're "one of the most important bands of their time" 🤣🤣
There was a guy I used to work with thought he was a ladies man., Every new lady that got hired, he would be all over her. Everytime this clown would walk in to the break room, I'd start singing this song. He would get so pissed turn bright red and stomp out .it was hilarious. Great song
U were cock blocking bro. But u did all those ladies a favor cracking on that guy.
YKWIM literally in the chorus? Must be your favourite song ever 😄😄
This is a good song, but Deeply Dippy is next level
this is the first time i realized the guitarist plays the Third Stone from the Sun Hendrix lick between lyrical stanzas. Cool!
I loved this when it came out (1991) and played it constantly. For some crazy I even danced to it at my church youth group in front of my friends lol.
You have no idea how huge this song was. Globally huge. Ridiculous and fun.
“You’re my Mate” is another fun one of theirs!
When this song came on the RADIO we couldn't help but mimic every movement!! Ya know, because we were watching music videos on MTV!
The "bridge" rips off Jimi's "Third Stone From the Sun"
Just came to say that. Most people miss that.
Never noticed it before!
Right said Fred were a British group, this song was released in the 90s & was one of their biggest hits
I was not ready for Brad in the lizard pants. 🤣🤣
This song is amazing. Still makes me chuckle. It's oddly catchy when it shouldn't be.
Where I lived as a teenager, a built, bald Frenchman owned the gym I went to, and this song was on ALL the time.
Even the bass fill is sarcastic. Loved this.
They also sang "don't talk, just kiss" (let your tongue fool around)🎶🤣
Yes, that was a fun one too! They should react to that one! 👌🏻👏🏻
That was an awesome song. It sure got people kissing on the dance floors in the 1990s.
Has anyone ever noticed that the instrumental part that's starts at 1:22 (in B &Ls video, not the song) is copped from Jimi Hendrix' Third Stone from the Sun.
Take this thumsb up for just the pic or brad in that shirt! Had me rollin!
1:20 Never noticed the quote of Hendrix's 'Third Stone from the Sun' before...NICE!
Once this song is in your head …it stays there 👨🏼🦲👨🏼🦲
It's official Lex would be the loudest girl at a Chippendales show.
Certified childhood classic lol.
Love it thanks for making me smile
I love how you two review the most diverse off the wall stuff... this song was so in, back in the late 90's but only for like 3 months... but still catchy today... 😉👍
Lol the girl is loving it, the guy is like maybe I should of done the lyric video. 😅
You're gettin' trolled, HARD!!!
Omg!! That picture!! And yes those pants were tight. 😃😆
Has to be played at all British weddings or the DJ loses his fee.
A 90s classic. Love this song.
Every dancefloor ever has heard this, including school gymnasiums in the 1990s.
Love the picture of Brad 😍 We need to see more old pics of you guys 🙏🏼
it's a comedy send up of models and that whole industry...so much fun.
Brad, I think they wanted to jump out of the screen and give you a really tight hug Lol
Just catching up on this one. Too funny you two!!! Laughing here like crazy.... somehow got to Brad's cloths. Take care.
That musical interlude part is a melody from a Jimi Hendrix song called Third Stone From The Sun.
This was a big hit, fun to dance to, and sing!!!!
A tongue in cheek take in the fashion industry. These guys having a laugh
1991 this song was huge. Tshirts for sale everywhere that said things like "I'm too sexy for my job"
You crack me up....Bobbing and weaving to this song lol
Any time I hear this song I see Seth Green's fashion show in the movie Airborne. 🤣🤣🤣 Awesome reaction as always. 💙 from Texas!
Hahaha that picture of Brad is tremendous…the confidence in the outfit
He was Mick Jagger's personal trainer.
Everyone went around singing about what they were “too sexy for!” Just making shit up. 🤣
*In the 90s there was the "International Male" catalog. It would sell clothes like for models or dudes that looked like models (I think they call 'em F-boys now) and most of the clothes were mesh. Mesh jackets, mesh pants, mesh underwear. It was 85% mesh.*
This is actually an awesome song, great sound!
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! I actually seen these guys live at Disney Pleasure Island. I think it was 1993 r94. Wow! Brings back memories. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Yeah, heard this alot on MTV waiting on the headbangers ball
"Definitely not Eurodance"
to one of the Eurodanciest songs out there
Band took their name from a 1960's comedy song by Bernard Cribbins.
LOL at this song.
Its tongue in cheek, models…catwalk…I’m too sexy!
Richard Fairbrass was hilarious back in the day on "Nevermind the Buzzcocks" especially the episode with Lemmy from "Motorhead". 🤣
That's such a fun song! lol
My friends and I used to sing this when were drunk back when it came out and have a big laugh
This was a catchy little phenomenon when it came out.
This joint always made me laugh
When this song first came out in the UK, I thought the radio DJ was doing some kind of skit.
"Right"
- Me 😁
Can't believe Brad's got some Robert plant pants!!
Love that bit with the "blip" *picture of Brad in a mesh shirt*
Lmao
Lookin good, bro
