I watched the ball drop at Times Square with Dick Clark on the TV New Year's Day 1979 and a few minutes after, this video came on. I think this was Rod Stewart's attempt at cutting a disco song. A successful attempt, since it went all the way to #1 on the charts in many countries. My mom caught a glimpse of Rod on the TV and thought he was "gross". I got a kick out of her reaction.

They found a portable turntable in the garage and played their story book records on it. One day I came outside to the sound of "Do You Think I'm Sexy" playing loud from their playhouse. I caught them dancing and singing like no body was watching. They had once again snooped in the garage and found a box of old 45's that belong to my brother. In Scotland, when I was young, we used to cringe at this and some of his other songs, especially as Rod Stewart is half Scottish, with his Dad being from here. One of his passions is Glasgow Celtic football club and he is here often. He also likes mixing with the public. He was recently photographed behind a bar in Glasgow serving drinks to people and he is often in a pub here in Paisley too. I used to hate this song and others from him too, but I kind of like it now. It's that old nostalgia factor. He is very popular here and performs often. He puts on a great show too. In fact, he was the first person to perform at my workplace, The Hydro in Glasgow with 4 sold out gigs. There's a short promotional video of the opening night here on RUclips. Just search for 'Hydro Opening Night' and you'll see it. He will be back again soon. Æx 🙏

Disco had such a stranglehold on the music scene in the late 70s that even rockers like The Rolling Stones(Miss You), KISS(I Was Made for Loving You), and The Grateful Dead(Shakedown Street) felt pressure to make a disco song to stay relevent.

    • @chrisa4695

True. But I think of it as adding disco elements to appeal to the mainstream rather than pure disco. Miss You is often sighted as an example of the Stones going disco but the song is more similar to Earth, Wind & Fire’s Kalimba Story from their 1974 album Open Our Eyes.

Yeah, I was 14 when this gem hit the airwaves. We had this and “Young Turks” on 45. My mom was a huge Rod Stewart fan. The dude’s fugly but he always got chicks. My favorite song of his is “Forever Young,” and “You’re In My Heart.”

Rod Stewart hardly seems like the type of guy who'd enjoy playing with model trains, but he has a huge setup of them in his mansion. This was in his funky '80s phase. Brad, I'm surprised they didn't play it in the ice cream shop where you used to work! I prefer his older '70s sounds like "Maggie May", "Handbags and Gladrags", and "Gasoline Alley."

Rod Stewart's got a dozen hits, easily...DYTI'mSexy?...Maggie May...Hot Legs...Tonight's the Night...Young Turks...Infatuation...Downtown Train...You're In My Heart...The Motown Song...Forever Young...Passion...Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?...Stay With Me (with The Faces)...(more)

I went to a Rod Stewart concert when this album came out. I liked him but my two friends, girls, wanted me to keep the guys off them. So we all went together. Turned out I needed help to keep all the girls off me lol. It was nuts, I had a new perspective on how women feel. I was not upset mind you, but my lord I was pinched, kissed, hugged, and a bunch of other things I will not mention here. 😃😃😃

There's a Brazilian singer named Jorge Ben Jor, who made a song called Taj Mahal, if you have the opportunity, listen to it, and see the similarities with this Rod Stewart song. It was so similar that Jorge sued Rod for plagiarism.

Rod Stewart started as a bonefide blues rock artist as is demonstrated when he was with the band "Faces" and his early work. The song Maggie May and his album "Atlantic Crossing" put him on the map as a pop hit maker, and his hits are grand and memorable.
This song shows him at his worst (even though I liked it, I was 15), it was when record labels outright forced ALL of their artist to produce Disco and synthesizer music, even The Rolling Stones made synthesizer music with a Disco beat. Well, this is Rod Stewart's contribution. Rod Stewart was a showman and he accepted and embraced that he was a sex symbol and heart throb for teen age girls. He stayed a true performer though, going to a 2 hour concert in a stadium with 70,000 people he would rock the place down and, from stage, kicking soccer balls into the crowd (wearing those tights). Before his musical career took off, he was a professional soccer ball player in, I believe the 3rd English division. He's also known to engage in public, friendly banter, competitive back and forth feuds with Elton John, the two are good friends.
    Fantastic artist.
