They were actually making fun of the catwalk models who thought they were all that and a bag of chips, too sexy to be seen with the regular people. Even too sexy for the sexy people. They were making fun of that whole scene with this song.

    I forgot this song existed!
I used to wear a Stetson, like Indiana Jones, and would jokingly sing to my friends, "I'm too sexy for my hat, what do you think about that!", in the same tone as the singer.
But, that's the only line I knew accurately. For the rest, I just had the right sound and whatever "almost right" words I could fill in.
You really can fill in whatever you want, and it makes just as much sense.

The best use of this song is in the movie "Grumpy Old Men". A beautiful younger woman, Ariel (Ann Margret) moves into John (Jack Lemmon) and Max's (Walter Matthau) neighborhood, and both of these "old men" eventually decide to go for her. Max beats John's time and gets to her first, but can he keep her??? Actually, Chuck (Ossie Davis) gets to her first, and she inspires his inner child to see the magic of living. It's a must watch!

The origin came from when the brothers owned a gym and watched how people would be so egotistical & vain by constantly posing in the mirrors at the gym.
