    2:57 This moment really sums up what Scorsese wanted to show with this scene. Amsterdam is remembering this fight scene from when he was a child. "Some of it I half remember, and the rest I took from dreams". That's why the fight scene seems so gaudy and over-the-top; it's being recollected from a traumatized kid's memory of the worst day of his life.

      @JimmySteller Год назад +23

      @@nikosgreek352 It’s a debatable interpretation, but I think Scorsese put that shot of his flinch into the montage on purpose. He’s not enjoying the sight of the battle, and there’s a heavy focus on the dead and injured as they writhe or fall to the ground. Sure, he would be more desensitized than us, but I think this was his first real fight, so he wasn’t used to it yet.

    Take a moment to appreciate the badass that was Priest Vallon here. He'd already fought Bill The Butcher before - who we are shown is very dangerous later - and won. He beat him to a pulp and left him alive. Then Bill challenges him again, and he agrees, fighting with a longsword and a giant cross to bludgeon people with, while standing a head above the crowd like a black tower.
    Bill has to throw a combatant at him to ensure Vallon is distracted killing him while he secures a jab. And even then, Vallon begins choking him. It takes a killshot to the flank to finally topple him.
    No wonder Bill honoured him still, 15 years later. Vallon was a badass.

      When you´re feeling pain and hold your ground you´re already a badass.
      When you´re watching unspeakable violence and chaos and hold your ground you´re a badass.
      When you´re staying cool while everything around you goes downhill you´re a badass.
      Not moaning in the face of death means you´re a badass.
      Vallon accomplished all four of them.
      Makes him one of the worst badasses amongst all badasses, I guess.

      It doesn't seem like that to me. Priest Vallon had already defeated Bill in a one-on-one fight. He knew how strong he was and in this confrontation he couldn't leave anything to chance. And that's what happens in this fight. Someone hits the priest's left arm with an axe. Bill knew at that moment the priest could only use his right arm, the one holding the sword. Then Bill calls him knowing that the priest would not hesitate to deliver a fatal blow. Right there, Bill takes another fighter and takes him towards Vallon to receive the sword, which cancels any threat and then he can stab Vallon, who still shows himself capable of strangling Bill until he receives a second stab. It was not honorable, but rather a sure strategy to win.

    A little detail that some may have missed - the first stab to Priest Vallon is not a fatal blow. A stab to the guts like that will bleed a lot, but can be survived with some medical attention. It's not until he puts his hands on Bill's throat that he stabs him in the lungs for the kill. Bill knows this, and confirms it when he demonstrates to Amsterdam later in the movie using a hanging pig corpse.

    It's a known fact that Rome has never smelled very good. Throughout history, as Rome developed, more and more human and animal waste flowed through the cities. The vast sewer system carried it away but did little to prevent the smell. This led to Roman, and later Italian, citizens losing their sense of smell. They tried to get it back by developing new fragrances and even putting excessive garlic, onion, and other seasonings in their food, but the smell was always too pungent and strong.
    This is why Bill "The Butcher" Cutting has such a problem with Roman Potpourri.

      Random reply. But took a class on Scorsese decades ago. Recalled that professor asked the class what the editing here and the flying woman meant and no one answered and he seemed disappointed. He was a big Scorsese nut. Later I figured it's because the unreal stuff is from the point of view of child Amsterdam.

      @@BlackCatRamen She wasn't flying, she jumped on the guy, and her character was actually one of the most accurate parts in the movie, altho she was a composite of two different women from that time: one wore the copper hooks on her gloves, the other liked to bite people's ears off and kept them in a pickle jar

      @@BlackCatRamen "Some of it I half remember, and the rest I took from dreams" It took me way too long to realise that about the battle, I just always chalked it up to Scorsese being hyperbolic, but goddamn was he smart to lay the foundations like that. Especially when he cuts to Amsterdam watch the battle with growing horror.

    There's just something about the way bill fights that's so methodical and efficient like one two hits and move on. Like in 10 seconds he's already disabled or mortally wounded 5 people moving through the crowd
