LET'S GET THIS OUT ONTO A TRAY, NICE™
NICE HISS™
I'LL BE COMING BACK AT YOU WITH SOMETHING NEW OR OLD, ALRIGHT COOL SEE YA™
I remember getting into my dad's old WWII K-ration box when I was a little kid. I remember trying to chew the gum; it just fell apart in my mouth. Apparently it didn't have the gum base ingredient in it that modern gum has. I remember that dark waxy paper, too. The whole package was still in pretty good shape (this was around 1956) so the Camel cigarettes were sampled out behind the barn. :-) When I went to Vietnam, the troops were still getting cigarettes in their C-rations. Watching you unbox this brought back a lot of memories for me. Thank you.
From the daughter of a Vietnam veteran, thank you for your service.
William Burr Thank you for your service
Do all you Yanks automatically type 'thanks for your service', every time someone mentions a stint in uniform? It reminds me of that 'have a nice day' thing. To think that it's the Germans who get a reputation for being automatons as well.
Baby killer!!
J/k don't go John Rambo on me
Gareth Oneill lmao rightttt
I can't imagine how much cash you sink into these old collectible rations Steve. Thanks so much for sharing the experience with us though.

Kinda cool to watch this. Brought back memories of my grandfather telling me about WW2. He would have turned 93 last month but he passed in 2012. He served in the 90th infantry division in the Army. He used to tell me about these K rations and how since he didn't smoke he would trade off his cigs for the chocolate bars. Said it wasn't hard to get at least 2 if not 3 bars for one pack of cigs. He'd have a collection of them in his pack and he would give a lot of them out to the little French kids in the war torn towns they would pass through. Anyways, cool video!
Kyle McCarroll
That's neat
Kyle McCarroll play Cod ww2 like your the grand father
Kyle McCarroll Respect to your grandfather! My grandfather and grandgrandfather both were killed fighting Nazis.
Much respect for your grandfather
What a great vet
In the the 1970's we received rations in boot camp as a demonstration on what we could expect for meals. The K and C rations were from WW2 and Korea. We ate the food and even tried the smokes which were a bit brown on the paper wrapping. Not bad, for being 25-30 years old at the time. The smokes were lucky strikes and they were strong as hell...hahaha
Jim Hudson thank you for your service
I love Luckies. Too bad I can't find em much
i love that these videos aren't just "hey, I'm gonna devour this old ass ration!" you actually take your time, and give info on all rations you show. Thank you for that, this channel is a very great pallet cleanse.
im amazed how both allied and axis forces had nestle items in their mre's.
OY VEY! DELETE THIS!
Both sides were also supplied by Monty Burns.
Nestlé is Swiss so that makes sense.
friendlywhiteguy Sly nestle dealing with both sides.
yes the winner will always be the food or medicine manufacturers
A month ago I found your channel on my "recommended videos" section. I have been addicted every since.
same lol
I ate an old MRE and haven't been able to take a dump for 5 days.

Being active duty military I can honestly say I am sick of MRE's.... But then I found these videos and I can not stop watching them. I really appreciate the time you put into your videos!
Yes, yes yes!!! Your videos are truly a gift! Keep it up!
+Steve1989 MREinfo Thank you so much for sharing ^_^
I know there are others doing this on RUclips but your the only one I'll follow. They're all fine and good but the way you do your videos is just exciting! Thanks again ^_^
+Steve1989 MREinfo hey steve were do you get all your rations?
Absolutely agree, these are gold. Was going to bed but not until watched up the second video steve1989 put up !
Keep up the good work Steve, hope life is good :)
+Everythingisdull Remarkable enthusiasm, given your username.
+Edward Marshall The username is an applicable metaphor for how I view everything. It's a way to impress on people that I care little for gimmicks or flashiness, that everything is equal in my eyes.
I love how carefully he opens them. I've been binge watching these for hours now. Love what you do man!
new video from Steve better than Christmas morning
nice display pic
thanks Commissioner
yes
Just imagine one on Christmas morning
What school do you attend currently?
As a kid in the 50s there were real Surplus stores that sold the real military surplus equipment. C and K rations were also on the menu. We bought the Cs, the Ks were crap! Everything was still fresh, as fresh as you were going to get it anyway. It was great for camping and playing war. Kids still did that back then! The flavor of the Sterno tabs can still be remembered like it was yesterday! The jungle bar was always a treat. You could set it in the direct sun and it didn't melt.
Bet these rations cost an arm and a leg, thanx for sharing.
How come these are typically in such a bad shape ? You got to eat some peanut butter from the Korean war, only a few years after. Didn't turn into freaking dust and it didn't look like the cans in those RCIs were particularly revolutionary and rust-proof or whatnot.
+Pavell54 Probably just a function of whether they were stored well or not
+Pavell54 depends on how well it was stored
+TMfilmes no worries ..he will , I actually thought he will just open the box and show the rusted content ~ reseal it and bet he'd attempt to sell it to a pawn shop lol
They are over 70 yrs old. The can rusted out and the liquids ruined everything else. Hardtack on the other hand properly stored would still be good.
great upload. my grandmother worked as a civilian in a warehouse for the army in the 60's and 70's and she used to bring home tons of stuff all military related from army jackets, k-rations, folding shovels to flashlights...this bought back some good memories. ty 😀
It's actually really surprising how many of these old mre rations survived and lasted, hats off to you!
even if they are a bit ruined or old
Binging old videos and I just figured out why I like these so much. Yeah, it's fun to see what comes in various rations, but seeing Steve try so hard to preserve older packaging reminds you how much he respects his hobby
Hey Steve,
Love your videos man! Of all the things in the world i thought i would be interested in watching, it definitely was not MRE reviews! It's your enthusiasm and love of what you do that hooked me. You've earned a subscriber for life! Keep it up man!
Wow! This is SO COOL! My grandpa was a WWII vet and it's fascinating to see a piece of life from that time. So impressed that I'm now a subscriber!
In 1967 I ate C rations from 1943. The chicken was actually quite good. The ham and limas on the other hand would gag
a maggot.
I tried to eat a C-ration from WWII of ham and limas in 2010.
@@tashih6760 How did you survive that??? Ham and limas were inedible when they were first packed! I don't see how they could have improved 70 years later. Of course you did say "tried to eat..." not that you actually ate it.
@@tamer1773 I had diarrhea for a week after one bite that I had to spit out because it tasted like solid flatulence.
@@tashih6760 And that was the best part!!! You're right about the taste as well!
I love watching Emmy's videos on rations and I'm glad it reccomended me this channel! These are so neat and you're so brave to eat everything!
Lucky Lex I came from Emmy too!
Lucky Lex He ate nothing.
On other videos, he eats a lot but on this one, he ate nothing.
10 year old ration? No prob.
20 year old ration? No prob.
30 year old ration? Mostly ok.
70+ years old? Impossible fossil.
Great videos! I really like how you show close-ups of the item labels, which usually include the names and addresses of the manufacturer. I usually Google the names of those manufactures, and more times then not, the companies still exist, although most have moved their manufacturing plants overseas. I'm also astonished to see how many of those factories were located in New York/New Jersey. I've lived in the NYC area my entire life, and most all those factories are long gone :(
you really have a passion for rations
I GET SO HAPPY WHEN I SEE NEW VIDS FROM STEVE! 😄
Steve; this was by far the most fascinating video that we have seen from you yet! It is like an archaeology expedition. Love it!
Literally just cooked lunch and then these pops up. Awesome :)
You mean"Nice, let's get this out on a tray!"
+Joshua nice comes after let's get it on a tray :P
No he's right about "Nice, let's get this out on a tray!" it can't be after the lets get it on a tray but it can be depending on how you say it. but "Let's get this on a tray!, Nice" sounds bad
+Cyril Apelo Clearly, you're new to these videos.
And I Keselowski I'm just correcting Napalmburns Grammar and yes I'm new theres nothing wrong about that
Compared to today's MRE's and this one, they definitely didn't have enough food or calories in it. The ones now never filled me up in the field so I know those guys in the 40's had to of been starving. On the upside they got smokes and chocolate tho
K-Rations were meant to be used by airborne troops, recon, that sort of thing. They were basically short term survival food until the troops could get their standard rations.
There were also units devoted to baking bread and coffee
Oh man, I love the design of the package. Looks like something I'd see in packaging and typography class.
currently binge watching all of these. Loving them all. Hope you can keep them coming. Thank You for taking the time and effort!
any time I see a notification for a new video of yours, I stop whatever I'm doing to watch it
I stay up after work & watch these addicting yet simple videos. Thanks for these!!!
2:20 I always get a weird kick out of seeing incredibly old technology interacting with much much newer technology. no matter how simple.
This is a cool video, it gives good info on military MRE's. Keep up the good work, man!
Well these are not mres they were just packaged meat but mres are meant to be made in the bag
I love this channel, when I was young I had a step dad who was a marine and would bring me tons of mres, my mom thought I was crazy.id sit in the back yard w my cammo on eating mres.
Eating lunch on a military base while watching this, good stuff!!
YAY! Always am giddy when I see a new video from you! Loved it, good video!

Good stuff as always mate. I just realised you're really not just a taste tester, you're a historian. And that's awesome...... :)
Super glad you didn't taste any of that "Fossil".
Cheers!
this video gave me more respect for you bud! at first i won't lie, i started watching just to see if you got sick from eating all that old food. but then found myself enjoying getting taken back in time on what they served back at different periods of time. and then there is this video, seeing you take much care with all the boxes so you can re use it for show purposes. much respect bud, keep up the great vids
Your videos have successfully convinced me that I need to try some of this weird stuff. I just ordered a Ukrainian MRE and one from the Vietnam war but, if one wanted to find a pilot survival Vietnam era unit, where would one find it? Just lurk on ebay and pray for months?
Styxhexenhammer666 I just watched your video on that. I'll be looking forward to it. I follow both you guys
Styxhexenhammer666 I would try modern MRE but not vintage ones. Opening them is awesome too see the old stuff but no way am I as brave as Steve1989, I could not eat it!
+Tender Sheep I seriously suggest you look into food safety as just a general thing. Knowing what makes food bad, and how to differentiate food that's unpleasant from food that's unsafe is a pretty valuable skill. For example, most things packaged in sealed containers like canned foods will be safe to eat nigh indefinitely. They'll degrade over time, but they're very unlikely to ever become unsafe to eat as long as their casing is intact.
seigeengine evidently not true as Steve has come across plenty of toxic food w can intact
Archetype00 is this even still good for eating
My father fought in WWII and used to talk about how he loved K Rations.
He said the soldiers used to throw the chocolate out to the German orphans.
He was a staff sargeant with the Railsplitters, 84th Division, drafted after the Battle of the Bulge.
Some of these K Rations had bacon, his favorite. He was in Germany the last year of the war, and then another year during the reconstruction.
He passed away in 2008 from Alzheimer's and I love this video cuz now I can see whst he was talking about. Thank you!
the sad moment when Steve opens a ration and somthing leaked.. I cri every time
I don't know why I like these videos so much, I guess it's because they're relaxing & pretty interesting.
So I've watched Band of Brothers many times. When it first came out when I was a kid, and randomly throughout the years after. I watched your video on WW2 rations and just happened to notice, that in part 4 "The Replacements," one of the troopers gives a Dutch collaborator a ration kit. And its looks exactly like your video! How awesome. Little things make me happy haha :) Glad they kept details like that down to a T.
Nice
Your videos are a really cool insight into an important part of history. Thanks for sharing Steve
The king of rations returns!
Really enjoy these videos. Its a new thing to watch on this website. Especially the pre Vietnam rations. Keep em comin
this is amazing! I'm staying with my father for a bit and he lives in fulton ny (I used to live there) and that factory is right down the rode that made the chocolate! ! I have always herd story's on how u used to be able to smell the chocolate in the air! sadly tho most of it is being torn down now, but hearing that that was made here so long ago was awesome, your videos are fantastic! !
Holy shit, Steve, This case is beyond cool! I love all the really old vintage stuff, much over the newer stuff, even though EVERYTHING on this channel is real quality and really cool! Thanks a bunch, Steve, for entertaining me and over 130,000 others!
Fascinating, makes me really value my lunch a lot more now !😁
Excellent production/program. Thank you very much. just LOVE WW2 era stuff.
When I was a kid, they used to give out the same little package of cigarettes as a promotion. This was in the late 60s.
Great Channel! Never gets old watching these.
It's a real shame about the cigs, had hope for those at least
He's gotten some Camels around the same time period that were smokable. He said something along the lines that they were remarkably smooth for how hard they hit.
+Edward Marshall I saw that one too, I don't smoke but I understand the aging thing for cigarettes and liquor, so I kinda felt his disappointment for them
Conner Wagner I appreciate that he goes to such lengths for his reviews, but he's a former smoker. I'm kinda glad they were ruined.
I smoked for 45 years and now I can't breath...I wish someone would had warned me these might be dangerous for my health...*Whosagonnapay*?
They were at war, who gives a single shit if soldiers smokes or not? It could be his last.
Steve1989, I've watched some other MRE channels recently. Your curiosity, range of knowledge and understated enthusiasm completely sets you apart. I just closed a clip of someone snickering about a non-English word. Last night you were reading Chinese. Every one of the ration items you review gets a fair shake, from the edible but revolting side dish to the incredible sauce packed with it.
i cannot believe how your channel has blown up Steve, was here from the beginning!
They grow up so fast sniffle.
+Cesar Perez yeah, agreed, i need a hug ( hugs himself ) 😞😢
Man I love these little peaks into WW2 history you make Steve !
Or as many servicemen called them, Kennel Rations.
I love how carefully you open everything. I really dislike when people mistreat antiquities.
I am just finding this, amazing and repulsive at the same time.Keep up the tasty work!
that music at the end was so nostalgic! it completely reminded me of all those stupidly long and boring nature videos my teacher used to show the class and i in 4-10 grade
Cigarettes were healthy back then :D
no, people just thought they were healthy. Cigarettes were always bad for you.
I think that's what he was implying
REALLY???? NO SHIT SHERLOCK!!
A GI used to gas up a jeep and smoke at the same time. Cigarettes were OK.
YASIR SAHEED no way m8
Amazing video! It's astounding how all the food is still inside and well preserved!
Great scott, I love this channel more than life.
It's good, but man, your life must suck.
+The Mass Debator DABator
Noah Schierenbeck Back in '99 they had a "Find the gray M&M and win $100,000" promotion and, in my MRE, I found it!
In a random Korean field, with monsoon level rain pouring down, it dissolved shattering this Infantryman's dreams... I still went on to serve another 8 years.
But, what if?
The Mass Debator -I knew it had to be in an MRE! I remember that and after nobody claimed it in time and finding those bags in my MRE's even years later I had a feeling another soldier must have found it ^^
iametoh Dreams to ashes...
There's something about WWII that i just can't get over. I'm obsessed with it.
Nice! Those Camels look like something only a Zombie would smoke!
Wow thats awesome, Im actually from Fulton Ny, Both my Great Grandmother and Grandfather, worked and retired from there. Sadly the Nestle building has recently been/being tore down. They moved to Canada.... Fulton, the city with a future! This really does put a smile on my face. As a kid when it got muggy or was raining the smell of Chocolate filled the air. Dont get to smell it anymore but that plant had said to put out the best Crunch bars the world has seen!
Yes! New videos!
My jaw DROPPED when I first saw this, I had no idea that any vintage K Rations still existed! I wasn't too surprised that the can disintegrated though. That little folding stove was awesome, I had no idea that they had anything like that back then, I thought those fuel tablet stoves were more recent. Excellent video!
Chesterfield, if only every MRE had some.
Crank and Chesterfields, breakfast of champions.
My dad's favorite brand. He never went overseas, being too young for WWII, and not called up for Korea.
Player Review originally I thought Chesterfield was new.. because here in Denmark they were originally called "LM" but suddenly they had a name change to Chesterfield.
I love these videos man, it's like looking into a time capsule.
"I'm definitely not gonna smell'em. *Goes to smell it just before a jumpcut*"
My grandpa bought me my first MRE from an old auction/flea market when i was 9. Ive been enamored with them ever since. I think of him and that old auction everytime i open one..
A REAL ONE?!
WOW
i thought you're gonna atleast take a bite
Woke up this morning and saw a new video from Steve - NICE!
Jeez that dust... ewwwwwww
that was the Biscuit crumbs
DJ killer2005 Well it's over 70 years old, so I don't think it'll be good for you
actually depending on the contents the K ration will still survive, specifically the Soy bean nuggets that they packed into some of these. Those nuggets are like tack now but the stuff would certainly still be edible to this day.
Fascinating, I've heard about those things for years but this is the first time I've ever seen what they actually were. That little stove was a neat piece of work!
I still cringe when I think of Hersheys 'tropical' chocolate. It didn't melt. It didn't taste or look like chocolate. Feh!
Thanks for explaining that.
It was made to taste terrible so that soldiers wouldn't snack on it. For a quick energy boost in an emergency.
When the military commissioned the Hershey Co. to make that chocolate, they stipulated that it should not taste any better than a plain baked potato.
Had some as a kid. I thought I misread the packaging till my grandfather explained it's purpose.
I'm super into WWII history (actually currently in college as a history major with a minor in education) and when I saw this video I got really excited! Thank you for sharing this with us! It's really interesting to see what the guys would eat overseas, and interesting to know what time can do to certain things. Best regards!
This episode looks more like archaeology to me.
Jan46- As an archaeologist, I second that.
No idea why this gets recommend to me now 4 years later but I'm not disappointed. As a smoker I was super curious what smokes they were supplied with. Awesome video sir. 👍
Man, I was so looking forward to seeing you smoke another classic cig. Ah well, can't win 'em all.
I like those little notes you drop in the description.
when you have a cigarette addiction but its to pre-60s cigs
Loved that stove. Another great review, Steve
Lol you have a master piece shannel
I love your videos so much! Extremely educational and intriguing! I look forward to your future videos!
At first I thought "is he going to eat this?" Then I saw the food and thought "omg, don't do it!"
I had the same thought....
that loaf looks crunchy tho
Really interesting, and nice to see the old packaging, I remember finding some old ww2 cigarettes in the pockets of some old uniforms in Newzealand, this was in the 70s and they were still pristene, good as new, there were two kinds, camels like those and players navy cut, the cellophane wrappers were sealed, but the packs were stamped "army issue" the players were in a cylindrical tin. The uniforms had been in a wooden trunk in a farm shed since the end of the war. Funny how that ww2 stuff became more rare around that era, there used to be surplus shops that sold mainly ww2 gear in those days.
I can Just imagine how valuable these where when all the troops where Starving During ww2
Thanks for taking us back in time
these are really informative man! Lel pretty sure cigarettes were healthy back then?
+Steve1989 MREinfo They say the Greek men invented cigarettes, then the Americans came and put cancer in them . Haaa, i love that joke.
I'm pretty sure they just didn't know how bad they were back then.
+Cleefy It was a sarcastic joke . The first mass produce cigarettes where actually made in America.☺
+Willhelm Winter Ahh okay, you have a good day sir/ma'am
Smokin cigarettes was the reason we had real men back in the day. There's been a study just recently published that shows the increase in the amount of "cis" males there are, is in direct correlation to the decline of cigarette sales.
There was a surplus store in Vancouver, BC that had a drum full of those folding C ration stoves, they also had cardboard tubes of hexamine fuel tabs that were in your video (not wrapped in paper, but cardboard tubes that had 6 or 8 heat tabs).
My grandfather got malaria whilst serving in Burma... Thanks Burma

I like the "One Can heater"
Not sure on name of it but really cool how things were made back then and survival ready
What's the difference between dinner and supper? I'm assuming dinner is equivalent to lunch... (Excuse my ignorance)
TXLionHeart
Think it’s the other way around
Dinner (second meal of the day)
Supper (third meal of the day)
