@ That is a good question. I bought this 460 expecting 8mpg. The first tank was 5mpg! Didn’t buy it for its economy tho. Just like buying a Ford Excursion.
@@HammerWrench That’s one way of looking at it. I just remember my Dad with his 96 F350 with a 460 being glad he had the ZF5 with the overdrive, although his was more of a daily driver while not towing his 5th wheel, rather than just being his time to time tow rig.
My grandpa had a 67 galaxie 4 door, 428 and it had a push-pull switch on the dash. Once we got out onto the highway, it got pulled out and the overdrive unit that replaced the failsafe would engage. I was only 9, but i remember holding the light and asking about everything that i saw when he checked and greased everything under that car.he passed away in 2008, and his oldest son got the car. It still had showroom look to it. Beautiful chrome and perfect interior. He had an f250, 67 to 73, but it had an underdrive gear reduction unit in it. The divorced t case was a design i had on my 75 hi boy. I looked for a unit like the overdrive for it, but they were too hard for a 16 year old to save up for while paying all my own bills. I worked that 75 hard, and had the transmission rebuilt, upgrades, and put in a new, modern trans cooler and electric fan. The guy that built the transmission for me built it, "like a diesels", as he said. He had done transmission work for racers and my family for 40 years, ao i trusted his word. I have to say, i put a hot 390 in that truck, and i abused it hard. Just like a young guy with something to prove often does. I burnt up an FMX, and a C4. Im pretty sure the FMX was on its way out when i got it.
A stout trans indeed. Had one in my '78 F250 4x4 but it just wasnt any fun on the street. Ripped it out in 2019 and threw in an E4OD with an MSD controller. Hands down the best mod I ever did to the truck! In a heavy vehicle, over drive is just about useless without having torque converter lockup as you're just cooking the fluid with all that slip.
If you go to find one behind a 80s or 90s F-150 or e150 or even the 250, behind the 300 inline 6 they are almost all bad, you can spend months looking for a replacement. So much for a built transmission for a V8, the 6 cylinders seem to freaking kill them. Marketplace and Craigslist are full of f e and big block Ford versions that are good and cheap, the small block Ford and the 6 cylinder version... I've yet to come across a good one.
DOSE NOT USE TYPE F FLUID that's FMX best fluid for a C6 is CITGO QUATROSYN not very late fluid like DEX MERC use Transgo reprogramming kit switch to 1/2 cooler line and cooler in and out for towing or motorhome
@@smokenchoken1736 true for early c6 with factory clutches however bad with rebuilt clutches or converters. the Deal with Type F: Type F was spec'ed for use in 1968-1975 C6 transmissions. in 1976 Ford changed from Type F to Dexron. Thank you! I’ve had my 83 F250 7.5 for about a month and thought 4th gear wasn’t working. Now I know it doesn’t have one!🛠️
I wonder if you can get a E40D for better mileage? Or a ZF5? They both have overdrive.

Great video . I've got the C6 in my daily driver 82 f150 👍🏻
dont forget you can change first and second gear ratios with a planetary from a 4R110 transmission
1981 Ford f250 custom extended cab 400 6.6l 3 speed auto. Is it a rare truck? I just bought it and cannot find another one like it on the Internet.
FMX transmissions are tough too
They can be. I put a shift kit in every one I've had. The fault in the fmx tends to be that buttery smooth shift. It wears those clutch packs more.
👍🏻👍🏻
