A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on the Moog One.
The Moog One is an analog polysynth from Moog. That is astounding in and of itself. Considering its price tag, I'm sad to say there are things I don't love, like its effects, sequencer, and state variable filter. But its oscillators and filters are gorgeous, it has a classic sound that can also lead to some interesting new territory, and the multi-timbrality is extremely useful. Plus it's a beauty to look at and touch. I'm not sure how much I'll use it in larger, hardware-only setups, since it's so big, but I do think it is a dream synth for those who spend most of their musical time multitracking.
Here, I did some sound design explorations of the Moog, loaded three of the patches I made into a single multi-timbre preset, and created a song from a few ideas I had.
Performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

This may be one of the few Moog One videos that do it justice (sonically especially) while bringing it back down to earth. I am enjoying mine, but it is indeed not for everyone.
You just can't subtly spill in MINE xD
Congratulations that you got one.
"Well, it happened" - it's nice to know that even those among us that FINISH SONGS get GAS...
Haha, absolutely! It gets us all!
@@JayHosking indulging me is Your invention isn´t ?
I think this one might take the cake as my favourite Jay Hosking jam. Listened to it once, now a second and may go for a third slice
Awesome demo of this amazing machine! My dream lineup...one day when I win the lottery:
Prophet 10
Oberheim OB-6
Oberheim OB-X8
Moog One
Prophet X
Prophet 6
Roland Fantom 8 with Jupiter expansion
Moog Matriarch
ASM Hydrasynth
Arturia Polybrute
Hey Dr. Hosking, I took PSYC 301 and 304 with you in 2018! I'm also a synth fan and a grateful owner of a REV2 . The jam sounds great, keep jamming and inspiring young minds to study neuroscience with your awesome lectures.
Dimitrios! I love it when worlds collide. I've been meaning to try the Rev2 for some time (I really like the Take 5 a lot!). Do let me know if you put some music up somewhere because I'd love to hear them. And best of luck on the academic side, too!
This was an incredibly hard video to click on. The Moog One is a dream synth of mine. I knew you'd do it justice (and man, did you). I was also afraid that this was going to kick me over into buy mode which, honestly, would be super excessive for me (or what little talent I may or not possess). You're description of it was the perfect way to offset this conundrum, though. Thanks, again, for sharing. - A Fan.
Same for me Shane. I recently bought a prophet 6 which wasnt cheap. Missus would kill me if she really knew. Im not a keyboard player and these beauties are designed for the blessed- ergo- jay.
Polybrute all the way. Great sound that can stand up to the Moog one at almost half the cost.
@@System-1541 I like the Polybrute a lot. Seems crazy expressive. That's also why I bought the Hydrasynth. Great stuff!
@@System-1541 Polybrute is great...but it's far from having 16 voices and up to 48 oscillators in unison.
@@BeastlyAnteater I'll cop to that. Guilty! Seriously, it took a bit more than that. I've been watching it forever and talking to friends that have them. Great, great instrument.
Beautiful piece! There seems to be a slight melancholy feel to it. This deserves some remixing. Maybe the quiet "plucked" fuzzy piano sound at the end could serve as a chorus/bridge in the middle as well.
Nice !
Special!
This has been the best Moog One video demos I've watched to date - really nice work
Beautiful playing.
Certainly an immense synthesizer. It’s nice to read your thoughts on it while listening to the video.
The last sound was my favourite.
That sounds larger than life. Most exciting thing since cs80
Amazing chord progression. That b minor adds a dramatic, ominous surprise.
Crazy sounds love it . mine is coming soon
thanks for sharing
You may not gel with the Moog One, but wow, those chord voicings.... they transport me somewhere epic man
thank you! This peace(piece) put me in a good place. THANKS
the melody at the end
This is my exelent moog
I gotta say man, your channel is just full of musical inspiration! Keep it up, I love it
Really appreciate hearing it. Thanks so much!
Beautiful jam! And thanks for the honest (initial) assessment. Despite your not-unqualified early enthusiasm for the instrument, you certainly make it sing. Seems like one of those synths that deserves (and rewards) the investment in learning it.
The proof is in the pudding. Nice pudding was made here.
If I could get one, I'd get it. Not enough workspace would never be a problem. A larger table would be the solution.
I like this one.
(pun intended)
The written text is much better (if you ask me) than the regular spoken word you see mostly.
Keeps you focussed on the video.
The track was wonderful. Sounds were great (I think the effects sound quite good, but there is room for improvement via dedicated pedals, I'm sure).
The size and price make it something I will never own, but I love to see / hear others make great stuff with it.
And I think this synth will have to grow on you. There is so much going on, it must be hard to get it all in that small brain of ours.
Thank you Jay. This is so intoxicating and peaceful 😌. Very well done 👏! Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
Everytime i read "Thanks for indulging me", i reply with "I am honoured to have that priveledge" cheers Jay. Always just delightful.
Great sounding jam. I really want to test drive a One, and may have to travel up to Asheville to do it. I love the sound, but I've heard similar thoughts from a few people now. I feel similarly about my prophet rev2. I love some of the sounds I get out of it, but I don't find the sound design process on it to be as immediate or fun as I do with other synths. My hope was that Moog would figure out a way to design something as immediate and inspiring as the Matriarch, but in a poly context, but I suppose there is a lot more to consider especially in a multi-timbral context. I hope you start to get along with it, and I'm definitely interested in hearing more. Keep up the great work, and congrats on the One!
You have the sickest music gear Jay. 👌
Sounds amazing as always.
Sounds amazing. Great playing.
Jay, I love the music you create and appreciate the comments you make on your videos. I got a Moog One last Christmas. I own a lot of nice synths but the Moog One was very special in that nothing I own comes close to the sounds it could make. However, in a moment of frustration, because my Moog would constantly have notes that would stick on, I returned it. I worked with Moog for almost a month trying to resolve the problem but in the end they said they couldn't/wouldn't fix it. This was actually the second one because the first one was dropped pretty hard when it was delivered and no matter how hard I tried it wouldn't stay in tune. I know it's crazy but now I wish so much I could have one again, because it is truly the best sounding synth I have ever owned. I feel that I just had some very bad luck with the two I had.
I look forward to more Moog One music.
AAH! Just gorgeous.
My goodness, your play inspires me Jay. I think I found the problem why this beast is not giving me the chill (yet), my lack of skill to make this machine truly sing....wow! Thanks again Jay! Wonderful performance!!
Fantastic music. Thank you.
Sounds awesome, brother. I love the textures and tones. Don't stop creating!
one of my favorite synth pieces. Thank you for sharing!
Nice piece, and interesting what you putted out in the text and i TOTALLY agree in your opinion about the ONE!
Moog one wasn't really something I fancied but hearing it now, it sounds majestic and glorious.
beautiful jam session
This is a beautiful jam
beautiful!
Beautiful work, man.
Wow really beautiful sound indeed
Cinematic.
Beautiful piece. Very well done
Stunning !!!
Very beautiful and congratulations! Full of soul that Jay 😉💗🙌
This needs to be 1 hour longer please!!! 😂😱
At least one hour longer but probably a lot longer !!! Please ??? 😅🙏
So glad to hear someone outside I IV V I person
Great jam and this perfectly aligns with my thoughts on my Moog One. I'm waiting for this supposedly coming soon mega update but if that doesn't dramatically improve things I think I'm going to sell mine :(
I hadn't heard about the mega update, but here's hoping they're focusing on the effects!
I wonder if there exists a 'polysynth for everyone'. I very much doubt it. The sounds you make here are utterly magnificent. Ancient, yet newly born. The poly I've had my eye on is the Polybrute. I'd be very curious to see how close it could come to the sound of this thing, despite it's voice deficit. Ditto for the Hydrasynth despite being profoundly digital in nature. The One sounds absolutely gorgeous though.
Fantastic sounds and great improv. Awesome!
You summed up my thoughts on the moog one as well. To a T. I enjoy it’s sound UNTIL it’s played polyphonically ironically. That being said, your performance with it is the best I’ve heard it sound
This is amazing
Very nice jam ! Same opinion on my side. It new but sounds very classic, and still quite unique. An impressive instrument
lovely
Beautiful piece!
Moog One so powerful it doesn't need any other synths or pedals to accompany it.
Just a sustain pedal, and an expression pedal or two. 😊
The ONE and only...
glad you got a Moog One. it's a beautiful synth and it could use a firmware update to sort the sequencer out (64 steps is not enough)
Only I can say.. it's beatiful... and the Moog one also... but the song... I want it... (you should pull in bandcamp). thanks for this magical moment listen you
love this! your channel and your work are fantastic!
Beautiful mate! 🔥
I always get excited when you post new music as I know it's going to be amazing! This is stunning and made me get straight onto my Moog GM 😊.
Great stuff!
The amount of times I’ve gone into the shop and lost hours on this thing, I was pretty bummed out when the local store moved it on. Feels like it’s ultimate multitracking synth if you’re into playing things in, and that’s right up my alley. Hopefully I can afford it one day 😅
Omg those basses ❤️❤️❤️. Great song (a little good old jan hammer inspiration?) as well
Amazing jam!
Nicely done.
Moog One sounds cool !
Sure the streaming flushed down a bit of the dynamic and details - nevertheless: the sound is bombastic. Great job! :-)
The power of restraint.
It would be nice to see you revisit the ONE since Firmware 1.5
Atmosphérique !
ay you finally got the ONE!
Sounds great. It's a shame that I do not make enough from my music to justify buying one. The sound at the end is particularly nice.
Beautiful ❣️❣️
Very cool that you can make that all on one synth and it all sounds great! Loved the pianoish sounds in the end! As for the synth itself, I know that this kind of thing isn't for me at all. I'm not good at playing keys, and the interface seems to have too much going on.
Thanks!
The bright timbre has shades of OMD around the time of Architecture and Morality. That, in my book, is high praise indeed.
Congrats man, a grail to be sure. Love what you did with it in this video. Maybe it’ll be a case where it just take some time to unwrap exactly how this synth applies to your music.
I think you may be right. And thanks so much!
Who needs a car when you have this!
Nice.
Lovely piece. 👏🏻🙏. I agree with your conclusion on the One though. Personally my ideal “big” poly synth would be the Hydrasynth Deluxe. I suspect you could have made these sounds and this performance on the HS much more easily and pleasurably, with beautiful polyphonic after touch too....
I love the polyphonic aftertouch keybed on the original Hydra. I wasn't as in love with the sound design process, but I got some great music out of it. I ultimately sold it, but I really do miss that keybed!
ALL RIGHT..... Hey Jay , whatta monstrocity of a synth , - i would love you to start singing , when the piano sets in ..... its El John John territory , man ! 🤣 Knowing you to be a man of science and precision , i wonder how you can live with the whole tuning debacle of "The One" , Anyway - its so good to hear from you , my friend - sooo good ! 🤗
The tuning really doesn't bother my ears at all, thankfully; maybe it's a per-unit problem. But do let me know if it bothers yours! And thanks as ever.
@@JayHosking nah - i cant hear ANYthing wrong with its sound ! Its simply Majestic , in all its facets -
by the way - at 5:25 i strongly suggest that you take that whole piano outro part , and make it into a ballade ! - make this into a (Sing)Song - with youre fantastic voice - that tune seems like a good fundament to a perfect Pop song ! theres a defined intr. -a-b-a-b-c- outtr. buried in there ! Anyway - ill catch you later , my friend ,-
Hey Jay,. I love your jams and demos and I think this is the most beautiful sounding piece I've heard on your channel. Hence I'm a little bit surprised you were not 100% convinced by Moog One. And since I'm thinking about buying one, well, now I'm torn. :) Would you buy it again? Thanks in advance for replying.
I was very pleased with the final results. But a lot of the music experience with me is the process, and I found some of the early stages of the process to be less fun, exploratory, and revelatory than other gear. That said, I was very happy with where I ended up! And thanks for the kind words!
@@JayHosking thank you
Whoa. I'm contemplating over getting the One as my first (and due to living space reasons likely only analog synth...yes, but one big all-in-one synth still takes up less space than three smaller ones that'd sum up to the One's feature set), so would love to hear/read your thoughts once you've grown comfortable with it...if you do.
It’s worth taking up some space and worth every penny. Love mine!
Sounds beautiful. Wish I wasn't poor lol. The hydrasynth deluxe probably gonna be the only big one I'll be able to eventually afford
That new Hydra is a beauty. And I love the keybed on the original Hydra, so I bet it's a dream to play.
Wow, that is a magnificent synth, I would love one but making do with my Matriarch. Thanks for sharing and hope it beds down for you.
I know what you mean but the Matriarch is much more than ‘making do’. In fact, I’d say it’s core sound, filters, stereo delay and, yes, limitations, make it a much more immediate and creative synth. I’d be totally lost with the one. I’d make no music. I have the Matriarch, the Polybrute and a Prophet 10 coming. Vintage poly. Modern poly. And the amazing Matriarch. All those are about the same cost as a 16v Moog One!
Having a hard time figuring out whether to buy one or not, its just such a heavy investment.
Are you using the 8 Voice or 16 Voice version? If 8 have you ever found it limiting thus far?
Sounds expensive! 😍
It does sound lush, but that price tag! Would you not have considered the Super 6?
Definitely would consider the Super 6. I played the Super 6 for an hour in my local store and it didn't grab me. That said, I've got friends and acquaintances who love it, and I should probably give it another shot sometime. I would say the PolyBrute is a closer direct comparison, and I love the PolyBrute.
@@JayHosking no room for any big synths here, so Super 6 desktop, once I sell a few things, is what I would like next!
The desktop version is beautiful!
Hi Jay, did the Moog One ever "click" with you? It seems like a lot of people don't, and it has discouraged me from buying one. I decided to pick up a Matriarch to enter the Moog market to see if I like it. But I am still terribly curious about this sleek looking instrument. Now that you have had it for some time, what do you think of it? Is it a 'must have', or a 'you can live without it', in your honest opinion?
Hi! No, it didn't click with me, although I can see some obvious benefits for those doing DAW work with multitracking. The Matriarch, by contrast, is immediate and intuitive and a ton of fun. I think it's a delight to explore and learn on, and it grows well with you. Plus with the Take 5 and the Polybrute in the analog poly space, now, it's even harder to justify the One (in my opinion). Hope that helps!
You mention it’s not your favorite synth. What is your favorite? I’m looking to incorporate maybe a voyager rme into my setup with my eurorack but am hesitant to pull the trigger. I understand the differences (mono, poly, etc.) but am curious on your thoughts about a synth with warmth and the capability to get crazy sounds.
Working on a "my favourite synths" video now. Not sure it's possible to have a single favourite. The Voyager sounds amazing. I am a sucker for Moog sounds, including the One, though I don't currently own a Voyager.
Yesssss
It sounds nice, but for the price you could buy 3 other synths that sound just as good plus some. I don’t think the sound or features justify the price tag, but I would still love to have one.
Daaaamn so we can expect to see you scoring Interstellar 2 right??
I would definitely love to do that!
Sounds fantastic, one is my dream. is it a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce? no, there is a different world, a different dimension and a final solution in synthesizers. With such music, the aliens will watch as we destroy the entire planet and everything will fall into the dust and melt into a big cloud .........
1:42 sounded exactly like the chords of dayvan cowboy by boards of canada
Well, I am Canadian
So where are you at with it now, after a year has passed? Still mixed feelings?
Not him, but after 1 year I think Moog One is the best synth ever made, sonically and functionally.
Still mixed feelings, but the oscillators and filters just floor me and I think I'm hooked.
There is the moog one for made.
Stellaris ты ли это?
Just out curiosity. What is your favorite poly-synth?
Awesome jam, was wondering, are you able to tune the pitch of the notes you play? Can you set the synth to A-440, A-432, etc...? Just curious because I want to lay down electric bass and drums with some synth, but not in A-440.
Did you keep the Moog One? Has its grown on you?
Sold the 8 voice, got a 16 voice. It has grown on me. The effects implementation still bugs me, but the oscillators and filters, plus the tri-timbrality, are really for me.
@@JayHosking Thanks for the reply! I have the 16 voice coming in a couple weeks. Want to share the patches from your video? 🤣That last patch is especially nice.
@@earganic Sorry, those patches are long gone! I don't tend to fuss much about posterity, and often joke that I make "ice sculpture" musical setups. I never transferred the patches when I switched to the 16-voice. I'm sure you'll make great stuff!
