    A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on the Moog One.
    The Moog One is an analog polysynth from Moog. That is astounding in and of itself. Considering its price tag, I'm sad to say there are things I don't love, like its effects, sequencer, and state variable filter. But its oscillators and filters are gorgeous, it has a classic sound that can also lead to some interesting new territory, and the multi-timbrality is extremely useful. Plus it's a beauty to look at and touch. I'm not sure how much I'll use it in larger, hardware-only setups, since it's so big, but I do think it is a dream synth for those who spend most of their musical time multitracking.
    Here, I did some sound design explorations of the Moog, loaded three of the patches I made into a single multi-timbre preset, and created a song from a few ideas I had.
    Performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

    This may be one of the few Moog One videos that do it justice (sonically especially) while bringing it back down to earth. I am enjoying mine, but it is indeed not for everyone.

    This was an incredibly hard video to click on. The Moog One is a dream synth of mine. I knew you'd do it justice (and man, did you). I was also afraid that this was going to kick me over into buy mode which, honestly, would be super excessive for me (or what little talent I may or not possess). You're description of it was the perfect way to offset this conundrum, though. Thanks, again, for sharing. - A Fan.

    The written text is much better (if you ask me) than the regular spoken word you see mostly.
    Keeps you focussed on the video.
    The track was wonderful. Sounds were great (I think the effects sound quite good, but there is room for improvement via dedicated pedals, I'm sure).
    The size and price make it something I will never own, but I love to see / hear others make great stuff with it.
    And I think this synth will have to grow on you. There is so much going on, it must be hard to get it all in that small brain of ours.

    Great sounding jam. I really want to test drive a One, and may have to travel up to Asheville to do it. I love the sound, but I've heard similar thoughts from a few people now. I feel similarly about my prophet rev2. I love some of the sounds I get out of it, but I don't find the sound design process on it to be as immediate or fun as I do with other synths. My hope was that Moog would figure out a way to design something as immediate and inspiring as the Matriarch, but in a poly context, but I suppose there is a lot more to consider especially in a multi-timbral context. I hope you start to get along with it, and I'm definitely interested in hearing more. Keep up the great work, and congrats on the One!

    Jay, I love the music you create and appreciate the comments you make on your videos. I got a Moog One last Christmas. I own a lot of nice synths but the Moog One was very special in that nothing I own comes close to the sounds it could make. However, in a moment of frustration, because my Moog would constantly have notes that would stick on, I returned it. I worked with Moog for almost a month trying to resolve the problem but in the end they said they couldn't/wouldn't fix it. This was actually the second one because the first one was dropped pretty hard when it was delivered and no matter how hard I tried it wouldn't stay in tune. I know it's crazy but now I wish so much I could have one again, because it is truly the best sounding synth I have ever owned. I feel that I just had some very bad luck with the two I had.
    I look forward to more Moog One music.

    I wonder if there exists a 'polysynth for everyone'. I very much doubt it. The sounds you make here are utterly magnificent. Ancient, yet newly born. The poly I've had my eye on is the Polybrute. I'd be very curious to see how close it could come to the sound of this thing, despite it's voice deficit. Ditto for the Hydrasynth despite being profoundly digital in nature. The One sounds absolutely gorgeous though.

    Hi Jay, did the Moog One ever "click" with you? It seems like a lot of people don't, and it has discouraged me from buying one. I decided to pick up a Matriarch to enter the Moog market to see if I like it. But I am still terribly curious about this sleek looking instrument. Now that you have had it for some time, what do you think of it? Is it a 'must have', or a 'you can live without it', in your honest opinion?

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  2 года назад +1

      Hi! No, it didn't click with me, although I can see some obvious benefits for those doing DAW work with multitracking. The Matriarch, by contrast, is immediate and intuitive and a ton of fun. I think it's a delight to explore and learn on, and it grows well with you. Plus with the Take 5 and the Polybrute in the analog poly space, now, it's even harder to justify the One (in my opinion). Hope that helps!

    Sounds fantastic, one is my dream. is it a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce? no, there is a different world, a different dimension and a final solution in synthesizers. With such music, the aliens will watch as we destroy the entire planet and everything will fall into the dust and melt into a big cloud .........

    So where are you at with it now, after a year has passed? Still mixed feelings?

      Not him, but after 1 year I think Moog One is the best synth ever made, sonically and functionally.

      Still mixed feelings, but the oscillators and filters just floor me and I think I'm hooked.

    Just out curiosity. What is your favorite poly-synth?

    Awesome jam, was wondering, are you able to tune the pitch of the notes you play? Can you set the synth to A-440, A-432, etc...? Just curious because I want to lay down electric bass and drums with some synth, but not in A-440.

    Did you keep the Moog One? Has its grown on you?

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  Год назад

      Sold the 8 voice, got a 16 voice. It has grown on me. The effects implementation still bugs me, but the oscillators and filters, plus the tri-timbrality, are really for me.

      @@JayHosking Thanks for the reply! I have the 16 voice coming in a couple weeks. Want to share the patches from your video? 🤣That last patch is especially nice.

      @@earganic Sorry, those patches are long gone! I don't tend to fuss much about posterity, and often joke that I make "ice sculpture" musical setups. I never transferred the patches when I switched to the 16-voice. I'm sure you'll make great stuff!
