  • Correction!
The shaft is turned clockwise. I said counter clockwise in the video.
How to adjust the governor on a Magnum 20 on my cub cadet 2072. It should be the same as the Magnum 18.
A link to the website where I download the service manual is below. Adjustment is on page 6A.13

Just did this and it worked good. You said in the video to spin the shaft counterclockwise? But the manual states clockwise like turning to the exhaust. Mine moved almost a 1/16 and now my surging is gone.

when i turned the shaft fully clockwise there was mechanical clanking, so i am going back to ccw rotation and see if the clanking goes away, then slowly turn back cw to see if the governor works.

I adjusted mine by another video that said counter clockwise and boy did it make it race real fast. I just turned my key off as soon as it happened. No harm no foul.

LOVE the fact that your running a Horizontal Shaft Kohler Magnum!
That's what I'm running in my 1987 Craftsman GT6000 with an Electric PTO and an Electric Actuator for my Sleeve Hitch and Deck Height Adjustment!
Do you have any recommendations to gain HP/TORQUE?
I Love my 18HP Horizontal Shaft, but... I want MORE TORQUE for minimal cash investment! :-P
    Thanks for sharing!,

They seem to be great motors. This tractor runs great. I don't know what you can do to gain torque.
      Thanks for watching

The carburetor is the weak link and tends to run rich quick when they fail washing the cylinder walls down with too much gas and causing premature wear that ruins the engines. (Spoken from experience) I found an excellent replacement for the carb recently from ISaveTractors.com The carb has added some umph and definitely runs better through the whole throttle range. It starts better than it ever has before and I've had the tractor 10-12 years. That is the best money I have spent on my old Simplicity Sunstar! Ordering used carbs on line (for more money) never solved the problem. ISaveTractors has redesigned a carb for these engines and I must say the exhaust no longer chokes me out when the wind is blowing it back into my face! Good luck and I hope this helps

You didn't mention where you had the throttle set to when you adjusted the governor.

I dont think it matters. Either way full throttle would be good to let the arm move freely.

THIS IS WRONG. Governor arm must be turned CLOCKWISE! aka to the RIGHT

Your carburetor idle circuit needs to be cleaned.

maybe you ought to put up a message on video around "counterclockwise" before someone (me) watches and adjusts his own "counterclockwise" and when engine doesn't run right, you then go back and see what you did wrong and found out you misinformed us!!! I will never get that time back nor hope I didn't ruin governor inside engine. Thanks alot
