Taryl I've been watching a lot of your videos, and now it's time to maybe buy something new instead of fixing all the time . the question I have is on the Toro Z master do you think a 26 1/2 horse Kohler command is sufficient horsepower for cutting through taller grass that doesn't get cut all the time or should I get the Kawasaki 31 hp What are your thoughts also on the Ferris 37 horse Vanguard big block

Thank YOU! I have a Sears mower with the 2-cylinder Kohler engine. Followed your instructions. Bought two spark testers ($10), hooked them up and sure enough, one side wasn't sparking. Got the replacement coils, installed them and all is well again. Saved me a bunch of money and headaches.

Again and again terrell demonstrates why he is, if not The very best then one of the best small engine mechanics available. I also like Mustie, Raley's small engine, Donnie boy 73, Steve's small engine saloon and individualized repair. I would put
All 6 of these guys in the same room and then give them all the same complicated small engine fix with five of the same small engines with the same small problems and see who could figure it out and fix it first. And speed of repair would not count because I would give them all a 15 or 20 minute tolerance of time allotment to fix the engine. Now we are talking a really good RUclips video!!! Demographics of these guys are pretty interesting, Two from canada, Two from the midwest, One who is an east coast transplant to the midwest, And one from down south, T-bone, who is a good old boy With some of the niftiest tricks I have seen along with taryl. Individualized repair is about the fastest though, BUT, the rest of these guys have been doing it for so long And they are all so good that they would give him a good run for his money. I'd probably put my money on donnie boy 73, But only by a whisker of a margin. I don't think there is a problem that must be hasn't seen ever!

I have a 22Hp Kohler motor on a Sears 50" cut lawnmower. Motor runs great, then just shuts off. Battery goes dead when new after it has run for a while. Motor sounds great while running though. First thing that came to mind to me was the coil/coils? got hot and would shut it off. The battery is dead now, it is old. But I can still jump start it and runs awesome then shuts off. Can you give me any ideas what you think could be wrong with it? Enjoy your videos, and learn from them. Thank you for sharing them. A guy I know has a Husqvarna mower that acts like the switch is bad, but watching your video showed me how to check the swithch, which is good. Now I have to test the safety switches on it to see why it won't start. I can start with screw driver on the solenoid.

Hi Taryl, I love learning this stuff and was wondering how to determine that it does not have a bad spark plug vs. a bad coil. Is it because you can see the poor spark thru the tester first before it reaches the plug? If it had a bad plug, would the poor spark in the tester look different?

I have a Kohler ch 18 that's been running rough and backfiring a little. I put the spark testers on as u did and like yours, one is steady and the other is erratic. I've been searching for symptoms of a weak coil a and nothing describes my symptoms. My question is, can a coil go weak and cause these symptoms? I've asked about this on a small engine and garden tractor forums and nobody addressed the possibility of a bad coil. The carb has been replaced and fuel flow is good.

First off... Thank ya Thank ya Thank ya !! I have a Kroler 25hp (not original engine on my Exmark Turf Tracer, label gone haha) about two weeks ago, it started losing power under load, even light grass. Here are my challenging trouble shooting tips. 1. was harder to start, had to pull choke, crank and quickly release choke and it would fire up. 2 under load, slight black smoke like loading up and engine dropped to about 20 percent. No apparent miss just no power. Here is what I did....checked the compression by removing both plugs and cranking 60 in both cylinders (is this due to compression release? on command?mixed input here) New plugs, Fuel line, Fuel filter, fuel pump, new carb. 2 checked charging system, seems good. battery good. Now I did your test on this video and at first I was disappointed to see both glowing orange. I engaged blades and still orange BUT after about five mins... I noticed a flickering on one coil compared to the other. I purchased a kit and intend to replace. ANY thoughts from the Wise and Powerful Taryl?? you fix this one... I'm gettin a shirt!

I have a question not related to this video. I have a kohler command pro CV24 on a toro z master zero turn and the solenoid has failed. And I have another kohler command CV22 that I was going to use the starter off of but the one on the toro has the solenoid built onto the starter and the donor does not. My question is will the starter off of a kohler command pro CH17 horizontal shaft engine work on the kohler command pro CV24 engine? Because I can't find a starter with a built on solenoid for the CV24. Thank you for your videos. I have learned a lot from you !!!

I have a Scotts with the 20hp Kohler that had the exact same hood on it. It was made by Murray. When I entered in some part numbers online , Murray was the only parts diagram that matched up. Maybe manufacturers swap each other parts. Even the head light assembly is the same. cheers

Taryl, have you ever seen inconsistent spark only when you engage the electric PTO? Basically only under a load. I'm running into a problem with this Kohler 20HP. When i engage the blades the rpms seem to dip down a bit and seems to run just a little rough. Not horrible but i believe it should have just a wee bit more power.

Put a new Mikuni fuel pump on...no go...took the line off from the gas tank to the pump, held it down and lots of fuel comes out... there is ZERO pulse from the pulse line that goes to the crankcase when turning over. what would cause this?? ie: what should we be looking at next? thx a bunch. fellow grassrats....

I put the new coil on. It didnt fix the problem. Still blinks on that side. I changed the plugs and still no change. That only leaves the ground wire so i must have a intermittent ground on that coil. Ill ohm the wire out there is a plug behind the engine. Might be bad plug connection. Its late so ill look tomorrow.

    • @okiebbq2536
      @okiebbq2536 6 лет назад

Finally i got everything fixed. It wasnt a coil but intermitten connection on the ground wire. They seem tight but would get loose so you have to tighten them twice. If i have any more trouble with them ill solder them next time. The reason why my light shows bad is because the light was bad. It would blink worse showing the loose connection but it would blink a little anyway. It caused me lots of headache trying to fix the coils. When i swapped the lights i thought how can that be so put bith lights in series and one would blink lots and one wouldnt blink at all. So if youre going to use this type of cheap testers like i did out them in series and make sure they both work right.

Bingo! I just came inside minutes ago from working on my faltering my Toro 266 H Wheelhorse ---- it's running just like that. I was going to sit down and read about the regulator rectifier, thinking the electrical information to the carburetor solonoid wasn't correct, thus causing an unsteady regulation of gas at the carburetor ...and thus.....to the engine , causing the rough running. As I began searching I saw this video. Hey! Mine sounds just like this one does / did. Ya think? ?? Well, I'll have to get some spark plug checkers.... We shall see.

Hey Taryl, I got a Husqvarna riding mower with Kohler engine with dual ignition coil. I've had the problem where it won't restart after it's been running for a while or hot.
I've replaced the solenoid and both ignition coils and it seemed to work fine. But again it's doing the same thing. The spark plugs and oil have been changed as well recently. What else should I check? Thanks in advance.

    Hey Tayrl,
I have a Kohler 25hp twin. I put a new carburetor on it and now it back fires after warmed up upon restart only. Do you think it's the carb or valve gap? 750 hours on motor.
    Thanks
    Tom

Very helpful. What RPM should a CV740 Kohler be at for MAX throttle
& no load? The K71 transaxle states 3400rpm, but shouldn't the
engine be a little higher than that at no load (in neutral & mower
    deck idle)? Thanx.

Could I use/modify a carb and intake from a vertical shaft 18 hp kohler command on my horizontal engine, in hopes of making the engine shorter, got some clearance issues

Any idea why the valve cratered? Those kohlers are pretty tough. The tractor itself didnt look abused.
