I am from Hartford, Connecticut in the U.S. and planning to study abroad at the University of Hertfordshire this autumn. I always found it ironic that the I'm going from Hartford to Hertford. I was watching this video to lean more about the region and it just blew my mind to find out that my home city is actually named after the city that I'm going to be studying in. 🤯
I feel very proud that my hometown is number one. St Albans is just so wonderful. But this video was really informative S I notice I’ve never been to the other cities, only driven past them, even though they’re so lovely!!
Totally agree with your selection. I moved to WGC from London 20yrs ago and still enjoy how pretty the town centre is. I often visit St Albans as it’s only a 15 min drive and also think it is very pretty and worthy of being placed as your No.1. 👏🏽
My Dad was involved in the development of WGC. It’s pleasant if a little to regimented, like Milton Keynes. St Albans is a good pick for first position.
I used to drive up to St Albans from London to visit my ex-sister-in-law who had a Start Right shoe shop slap bang in the centre of the town. Also had excellent Sunday Lunches there too! Fond memories of that place! Great vid of Hertfordshire and stunning towns with an abundance of history worth taking a visit to.
I live in Cape Town since 1995 where there is a suburb ,Pinelands, modelled upon welwyn Garden City even a road named Welwyn Ave. It is a leafy, pleasant place. I would have been disappointed if Hitchin was not included as I knew it well, having close relatives who lived there & worked there before emigrating.
Having lived bordering Rickmansworth for most of my life then moving to Hitchin, before settling just outside Ampthill, I am pleased to see that they are all deemed by yourself some of the prettiest towns in their county ❤
Great video and great narration. You taught me a lot about my home county. I had family who lived in Stanborough, Welwyn, and always thought it was a lovely place to live. And I have family still living in other parts around the county. However I was thrilled to see my own birthplace as number one, the city where my parents grew up [within walking distance of Hatfield Aerodrome], went to school, married, where my brother and I were born - although dad was head hunted and we grew up in NZ. However my heart has always been in St. Albans [I just wish I could afford to live there but that is well out of my reach unfortunately] and the cathedral is, to me, the most beautiful in the country. AVE VERULAMIUM. And have you covered Suffolk, I lived in both Clare [my grandparents moved there from St. Albans] and Stowmarket and still fondly remember Sudbury, Bury St. Edmonds, Ipswich, as they were 30 years ago. While Long Melford will be known to many thanks to Lovejoy.
Thanks very much, that's nice to hear! I've been to parts of Suffolk, although I'm a few filming trips short of being able to make a prettiest towns video for it at the moment. But I was pleasantly surprised by Ipswich, and Bury St Edmunds is beautiful, of course.
@@AlexinGreatBritain Lavenham normally wins in that regard and it is beautiful but personally I think there are many far prettier villages and towns to be found.
@@MayYourGodGoWithYou Perhaps. In any case I'm avoiding villages as there are just too many of them, so I may have to disappoint a few Harry Potter fans in regard to Lavenham!
Lived in Berko for 4 years. Beautiful, but not a lot to do there except eat and drink out. Which is very enjoyable but as young parents we had to drive all the time for entertainment for the kids, and larger choices of shops. Having said that Berkhamsted is forever in my heart.
I live in Berkhamsted, 5 years now. It’s got everything, except: McDonalds, KFC, John Lewis. You could live in Brent Cross, or move back to London ( where I’ve thankfully left).
I’m shocked , shocked I tells thee , that my own town of Watford aka “Grotty Watty” didn’t make the list . Actually I’m not , as the High Street’s a craphole , although we do have some of the best parks in the country . The last film in the “cornetto trilogy” (Shaun of The Dead , Hot Fuzz & The Worlds End) was filmed in Letchworth & Welwyn , you’ll have recognised the high street straight away if you’ve seen the film
@@AlexinGreatBritain 11 02 (3), My late Parents retired to Sutton on Sea, my Dad & l used to get our haircuts there. My Mum & wife enjoyed shopping there too - Dept' Store, Butchers, Outfitters & other ranges of shops - all pre 'net days. Surrounding countryside captivating too. Happy Days !
How on earth can you include Bishop's Stortford in this list? I grew up there in the fifties and sixties when it was absolutely lovely, but the insidious process of "modernisation" started in the late sixties. Just one example of what they did was to fill in the river and waterfall in the town centre and replace them with a car park. Since then it's been a non-stop process of cramming in more and more multi-storey car parks and unlovely residential buildings; and you should see the cinema; one of the ugliest buildings on the planet. I got out of there in 1980 and have never regretted it.
Thanks for reminding me that there are still some decent places left in England. Having lived in Reading and Peterborough, I was beginning to loose faith!!!
Yep. It's alright but a little too much mock tudor in Tring for my taste. But if it floats your boat, here's the footage from my main channel: ruclips.net/video/DujP6gAEsFc/видео.html
@@robgriffiths55Good to see someone rooting for their school history lessons. Yes, the normally accepted spelling in recent times has been Stuart, but the reality is that the family name derived from a title one of their forebears had held - and is still held by the Prince of Wales, that being Grand Steward of Scotland. It was not rendered as Stuart very often throughout the manyyears of them being the ruling house in Scotland.
I love how you picked loads of towns around the slum town of St Evenage. I was born and raised in this town. Spent years collecting water from the neighbouring town Hitchin. Like Lewis Hamilton I was able to get out and no longer living in poverty.
I could buy Hertford as a pretty town if they hadn't driven a dual carriageway through the middle of it and plonked the world's ugliest multi-storey car park alongside it! What happened to Tring? Also Buntingford?
I agree, although it is still steeped in historical buildings, which have a beauty of their own. Over the past 10 years it has lost its charm and now seems to be in limbo as the council continue to screw up its aesthetic. There are still some lovely spots but it's sad to see the town centre gobbled up by new builds.
To be honest though, there won't be an ugliest towns series from me. Those types of videos may get a lot of views, but that kind of negativity's not what my channel's about. And there are more important things in life than ad revenue. But to each their own and all that.
Im very happy to have been born in the beautiful country of Hertfordshire, I still have to tell people I come from North London though...
I was hoping to see Wheathampstead, place of my childhood. I lived in St Albans for a few years so that was lovely seeing it.

Yeah, there's often a connection when it comes to UK and US towns and cities with shared place names! It's something I find quite fascinating myself.
So you will be based in Hatfield? I studied at this University 20 years ago while living in Stevenage, Herts
Royston!! no way 🤨
This is a small world !!!
Another great video. I grew up and went to school in Bishop's Stortford. I was somewhat surprised that Harpenden wasnt included.
Great video, mate! Been living in St Albans for the past 3 years and it is such a gem. Bonus points for the 'blurst of times' reference ;)
Ah cheers! Yeah, you can't beat a bit of classic Simpsons!

St Alban's . Where I spent my youth . Nowadays like everywhere . Full of homeless
Yeah interesting neat that you gave Hemel Hemstead a mention well done done
How on Earth did he swing that? I was an estate agent there ‘77 & ‘79. It was awful, apart from some little niches along the old high st.
Thanks, I really enjoyed this!
Much appreciated, thanks!

I’m really loving some of these reintroductions to quite a few happy memories. You do find some lovely locations dotted around. Thank you.
That's nice to hear, thanks!
Excellent video, and I (mostly) agree with your list!
Have you considered covering Buckinghamshire? Plenty of small, pretty towns there.
Absolutely, Buckinghamshire may well be one of the next counties to feature as I've only got a few towns left to visit there.
I can’t believe it! Hemel Hempstead got a mention, but yes that old High St is lovely.

No Hereford, for those who like to cross their Ts comprehensively?
How can you not include the picturesque town of Waltham Cross.
where's ware ? hehe
Ware . Full of wolves
no watford?
I was lucky enough to be born in St.Albans. Shame I was stupid enough to leave, something I wasn be sorry for.

It's near Stansted, but on the Herts/Essex border.

Tring? Did you not visit Tring?
Of course. Tring had just a little too much mock Tudor architecture going on for my taste.
Buntingford robbed. Still enjoyed; thanks for the upload.
James Stewart was not crowned king of Scotland after his stay in Royston, he had been crowned king of Scotland years before!
I know - I was referring to him becoming James I of England in addition to already being the VI of Scotland.
It's Stuart for God's sake!
