Those little quaint cottages by each lock were houses for the lock keepers who used to take care of each lock when the canals were primarily for commerce. Some were still occupied by lock keepers in the ‘60s.
My wife and I, both American, me in the Air Force, and she the daughter of an AF Officer, met and were married in England on Aug. 2nd, 1960. Since then, we have returned for one-month visits several times, and now that we are old enough that we can no longer travel, you have been kind enough to show us why we love England, Scotland, and Wales so much. I must say, kids, that I am insanely jealous because we have never tried the long boats, and now we see what a fantastic experience we have missed. By the way, in my two years of living there in the Midlands and East Anglia and our many visits, we pretty much looked forward to summer being around the third Thursday of August.
Yup, those are indeed Highland cattle! The thick fringe of hair that covers their eyes protect them from stinging hail, lashing rain, insects, and biting winds. So it helps them survive the Scottish winter! They use their big horns to rake away snow in order to get to food...as well as for a good scratch as shown here! They were important to the Scottish economy in the eighteenth century as thirty thousand of them by the 1720s were sold to the English. In 1954, the late Elizabeth II ordered Highland cattle to be kept at Balmoral where they are still kept today! Though the breed is actually considered endangered in the UK as there are around 3,000 left in the country. Worldwide, there are 40,000 of them with most being in either France or Finland. Those houses by the locks are old Lockeeper's cottages. Men used to be employed to operate the locks when it was only used by commercial boats. The beauty of the British canals is you can just park and hop of to explore peaceful nature, quaint towns, and more. It's just so cool to drive the boat in cities like Manchester and London and then be in scenic nature the next. Truly a wonderful part of British history.
While I enjoy your ocean sailing, I can't tell you how much I REALLLLYYYY enjoy your England Narrow boating. Have been to England many times, and just love the shear beauty and how green it is. (YES it rains A LOT) plus your photography of the animals, flowers and quaint homes...Well done to you both
I realy enjoyed your vlog, it brought back some lovely memories. My wife, my cousen and her husband and myself did the Llangollen from Trevor to Grindley Brook and back a year ago last September. What a wonderful week that was.
That was absolutely heavenly. The transfer of your knowledge to use on the canal boat looks seamless with just enough excitement to keep you grinning and on your toes. Gorgeous country, weather and sweet companions along the way. The slower pace is something I think we could all use from time to time. Made so enjoyable because we love you two.
If you happen across HOLLY THE CAFE BOAT just ask for a coffee and slice of Lemon Drizzle - Jo and Vic. Resetting the locks for the next boat is the most social aspect outside of the pubs. Narrowboating is amazing and the canals are wonderfully relaxing and historic!
You’re channel continues to pull at my heartstrings and mess with my mind. Many years ago as a young boy from Wales I was taken on a canal trip and since then had a desire to travel on or even liveaboard a narrow boat. My lifeline didn’t take me on that journey other than a short trip on the Avon river system near Bath in Somerset, England in my 20’s. Fast forward to today and we’re sitting on my recently purchased 48 foot sailing yacht in Yacht Haven Phuket Thailand watching you guys living that dream of cruising the Welsh canals. BTW we’re having terrible thunderstorms and heavy rain as the start on the rainy season here, looks like your weather is a little better. Cheers Mac and Moon.
Relaxing and gentle cruising on very narrow canal. Filled with locks and tunnels, your showing your boating experience navigating skills. Thank you both for taking us along this interesting adventure.
This was my home for 25 years. One of the loveliest and unspoilt parts of the UK - where Wales and England merge... The junction is with the Montgomery Canal which is being restored from Frankton Locks through Llanymynech (half in England, half in Wales) and onto Newtown in Wales.
I watched them both this one and the Panama Crossing. You were so much younger, inexperienced, cute and determined! Good job on all, this sweet Canal in England is a Charmer. But the Panama crossing brought back so many memories for me, again. I was in Mia Flores on a Sunday, in Panama 2008. Nice to see the tower, layers, and remember my view from the Museum floors of the Lock. Always a joy to see what you guys are up to next! Thank you for the Tour, the Education, and the delight of the Daffodils. Love them, it is always Spring when I see them. Brings back so many memories for me personally. Miss your kitties. God Bless, Happy Memorial Weekend, and Press On! I look forward to your June, 2023 Edition! Thank you for your superb Story telling, Photography, and cohesive chat, music, etal!
I love the Trevor basin, the aquaduct is amazing and Chirk tunnel is so cool, we walked form Cefn Mawr (We stayed with Family) to LLangollen and back again on numerous occassions, we only did the Chirk walk once and visited the castle, it was so amazing. I don't know what it's like by boat but walking gives you time to stop and enjoy the beauty of your suroundings, I would love to go back but I can't walk far now. Everytime we went to the Basin we walked over the aquaduct to our Friends home just up the hill on the other side. The pub before the aquaduct is fabulous, they are so friendly and hospitable, well worth a visit.
“Hiya Alright?” Brilliant bit of boating you two. Whilst I was stationed there, the canals and castles were a favourite of mine. Cheers and keep them coming.
I love your narrowboating videos because a few years ago, my wife and I took a trip with two of my sons. We rented a 60 foot canalboat and loved every slow, soothing minute of the journey down the Trent and Mersey out of Nottingham. We did about 35 locks and half that number of pubs!!! :) Thanks for the memories!!!
So cool to watch you cruise the canals - these were the vacations of my teenage years back in the late ‘70s. We then moved on to the French canals too - just as charming but more spacious 😊
Nikki, you said Llangollen so well, is there ANYTHING you can't do? Most of the Welsh can't speak Welsh! You and Jason are doing such a magnificent job in capturing the beauty around each turn on the canal, it's total eye-candy over there...everywhere you look! Springtime in England and Wales is so beautiful, an ongoing burst of color! You picked the perfect time to cruise the canals! I can't wait to see if you did end-up going to Chirk Castle, it's such a gem to visit. ( the walk getting there is a workout!!!) Also really looking forward to you two going through the "narrows!" Fun times for sure!
I've seen a Canadian RUclipsr called DownieLIVE (who does videos usually focusing on trains) do this adventure months ago, and I'm glad you got around to doing it too since it's definitely your style! You're probably shocked to see Mallards in the UK too but they are quite everywhere! Their native range is from Alaska to Japan, and were introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Love how you have to do the locks yourself. So not only do you get to enjoy the scenery, but also get to exercise and work your muscles whenever there's a lock. Fun fact about Highland cattle: They originated in the Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland as early as the 6th century. These days they can also be found across the south of Scotland, in other parts of Europe, as well as in Australia and North and South America too. Highland Cattle can even be found foraging 10,000 feet up in the Andes!
Love your great attitude, really enjoyed this video. The Netherlands are not that far away from Great Britain. How about you charter a boat there. The Netherlands have locks galore! You will be the masters of locks after a few days. As we say in Germany: I wish you always a hand's breadth of water under your keel!
@@marvinehicks1463 That is SO good to hear re: Nov. We're in Central FL - our 25th wedding anniversary is that same week this Nov. We went to Italy for our 20th (yep - always Thanksgiving week!!) and, while I know that is an odd time to travel to the UK, it may just be something we do for this one. We have been to the UK several times, but never on a canal boat. Thank you!! 😊
This might actually be one of your coziest and most comfy videos to date and that is really saying something, given the history of consistently great videos produced over the years by this channel.

I love your enthusiasm for this! Your first time on a canal boat/narrowboat is a once in a life time experience. You meet tons of new people, everyone's really kind & tries to help you when they can
Great Video Kara and Nate another RUclips couple I watch just published their trip with the narrow boat. Was fun to watch the difference with of you two couples. 😊
I adore your enthusiasm and positivity that you radiate in your videos. And I know there are undoubtedly other moments in life as a couple or in the family or stress for the videos or boat but ... stay positive and continue to show your positive enthusiasm . That empowers people so much more than the negative. At least with me. So just make them for me 🙃🤣🙃 Thank you both
You are correct, those are Scottish Highlands. They are one of the most gentle cattle. A friend of ours had a herd of them, I would visit them often. They are my favorite cattle breed also.
Great vid Wynn's! Told Kara and Nate they shouldve taken a leaf out of your book and got some advice! Did you see? It was like they were on a dodgem, luckily they didn't knock any bridges down! 😃 Glad you enjoyed yourselves so much on the canal 💜
Amazing! This video has only been up for 11 minutes and already 1100 views. It kind of speaks for itself, the quality of videos you produce and the eagerness of your viewers to watch those videos.
That’s some tight maneuvering for such a long boat. For their age, those canals still look very well kept and appear to have quite a lot of the long boats still on their waters. Based on one of your videos last year I sot started taking the AG1 too and have been very happy with the results. I seem to have more energy and haven’t gotten sick during this time…yet. At my age (73) proper nutrition is so important and our full-time RV lifestyle doesn’t always lend itself to eating as healthy as we should. Stay safe and stay dry, or as much as that weather will allow you to stay dry.
Lovely to see you in Shropshire, my home these past 30 years, and on into the Welsh borders. Both being true less-discovered wonders of the UK. I hope you get to see Chirk Castle on the way back. It's a wonderful place, with fantastic buildings and beautiful gardens.
Thumbs up for being humble enough to point out that "this guy walking right here? He's walking as fast as we're going [walking guy then walks forward past the view of the camera] Actually [laugh] he's walking faster than we're going"! As always, great video!

20:30 Thank you for showing that because of all the years I've watched Cruising the Cut and Robbie Cummings, I've never understood how that is done until you've shown it now. Thanks.
I keep expecting you to run into fellow RUclipsrs, Kara and Nate, who are also posting their travels on a canal boat right now. (You're doing much better than they are but then they are still newbies to boating of any kind.) Anyway, can't get enough of your videos. Looking forward to an update on how your HH is coming along.
Well one advantage to cruising these canals is it would be pretty hard to get lost. The canal boats make sailing look like Mr. Toads wild ride. 🙂 Thanks for the video. Putt on!
Wonderful job of capturing amazing views! The drone shots were great and gave us a perspective of the canals and surrounds not usually seen. I’m enjoying how much you seem to be enjoying the adventure! 🤗
Thanks so much - this brings me back to my childhood times in Wombourne, near Birmingham. I learned how to operate the Bratch triple locks on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal and helped the canal boaters. Fun times..
Looking forward to the next episode as I used to work in the chemical factory (now gone) in Ruabon/Cefn Mawr. I used to cycle over the Pontcysyllte aqueduct footpath and I can tell you that you were probably safer in the canal. Its a very beautiful part of the world and the reason that aqueduct was built was to service the chemical works, this is why the canal was built in the first place. Incidentally, one 'chemical' that was produced at the plant was Aspirin by Monsanto.....
When we were kids we used to open and close the locks for the tourists for 10pence a time. It was a 20 minute bike ride to Fradley Junction from home and were were kept busy all day making a small fortune (lol) throughout the summer holidays.

Fun times..
That was really worth the wait. Been looking forward to how you are getting on with the Cut. Having fun all the way. Great 👍 👌
Reminds me of Nick & Theresa taking Ruby Rose through the French Riverway - without the mossy kelp:) Just beautiful 😍
😹 Jason, aren't you supposed to run out and yell: "Oy, slow down!" to that boat passing by @16:25?
🤣😂

What a fun little adventure! Imagine it with some charging stations while sleeping, solar panels on top of the boat, and a quiet electric motor!
Yay! The tour was so much fun! So excited for you both!❤ ❤❤❤❤
