How Did This Village Beat London at Its OWN GAME? (Food)

Whilst London is considered to be the culinary capital of the UK, there is one village that steals its thunder. With a population of less than 10,000, we take a look at how this small settlement on the River Thames in Berkshire managed to make a mockery of London's gastronomic accolades. How Did This Ancient City Become a TOWN?

In 1998 this ancient city in Kent was downgraded to the status of town. This is despite it being home to what is claimed to be England's second oldest cathedral. So how did this happen? In this video we explore the story behind England's 'lost' city. BRING BACK MIDDLESEX
I'm a bit surprised Hythe didn't get a mention
I have lived in Horsham all my life. It is sad how run down it is these days :-(
How can you be sure if there is questionable documentation at best?
Please do some research on correct pronunciations. Each county in England has its share of strange place name pronunciations and there is plenty of advice on them online these days
I went to Steyning Grammar School... & the town is promounced Stenning!
St Leonards is architecturally superior than pretty much all these
Nice one! Faversham still has a bit of ruggedness to it, but I really enjoy living here.
You missed out Crawley
My ex girlfriend lives in Faversham 😅
Another post colonial muppet who equates Ingerlund with the whole UK.
Is this comment aimed at me? If so, please elaborate so I can give you a little history lesson as to why there are no Scottish entries and why there's one Welsh entry (which you probably missed).
@@AlexinGreatBritain "Anglican" catedrals? A false construct to support your Anglo centric perspective. So yes its aimed at you. You do realise there was no UK prior to 1603?
Nice to see Edenbridge made it on the list
I live and grew up in Sussex. Sadly Horsham has really gone down hill which makes me sad as I grew up there
Petworth and Arundel - definitely. I'm not sure I'd recommend visitors to go to any of the other places if they don't have too much time on their hands.
I grew up in this area. My home town was mentioned St.Neots. I recognize & have visited most of the places in the video. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed watching the video. I like your voice. It has a soothing quality I detect a bit of a northern accent
Thank you! I grew up in Lincolnshire, which is northern to some, but not to others!
@@AlexinGreatBritain Lol Not that far north then to me. Pleasure to listen to
Good list. Of course I'd vary the choices slightly. But I'd guess your not local.....based on some of the pronounciations. I let you off! Nice video anyway.
Carlisle
Is battlesbridge classed as a village?
I believe it is, yeah.
Surprised Chester not included given it’s Roman and then Saxon importance
Worthing? Littlehampton? Bold choices.
Less so when you consider the competition though...
Brighton and Hove is a city of course, though its a large town. Hastings old town is great, the rest not so. Rye is Lewes on steroids for sure.
Hurstpierpoint not on this list? Horsham and East Grinstead should be lower down, Arundel is number one for sure.
Hurstpierpoint is a village, as far as I'm aware.
@@AlexinGreatBritain Of course, der, Nice idea for videos, thanks
Born in Sussex, and since 1975, west Sussex. I entirely agree with your ranking of the towns here!
Ah thank you!
Rochester is a lovely place but the biggest shame is that it’s situated in Medway so most of the time it’s full of muppets
Excellent video! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻 Greetings from a Swede in Glasgow.... Subscribed while here! 🤜🏻🤛🏻🍻
Tack så mycket. Enjoy Glasgow!
I'll tell you something, going to London for the day made me realise how much i like living in Canterbury
I think everyone should fly there county’s flag on all their council buildings as well as the English flag or the British one, when I was in Cornwall they proudly flew it everywhere, but I live in Surrey never seen it eny where, I’m Cumbrian or from Cumberland if you’re a purist. Do you know how you can get a flag of your own county, seems like I’m seeing a lot of certain flags over our own.
I agree wholeheartedly! I think there are a few specialist shops online.
very beatiful work bro i just subscribed
Cheers!
How about the north of England, looks like you never got past Watford
Most of the northern cities were towns that got big during the Industrial Revolution, then given city status by Queen Victoria.
Faversham is superb.
In 2002 BBC Radio Devon asked the public to send in designs for a flag, there was an online vote and it was made a year later.
Funny pronunciation of our W Sussex towns in some cases!
Having spent the first 18 years of my life on the SouthEastern coast of Kent, I was pretty shocked to realise how little I knew of the rest. My parents moved to Tenterden so I know that and Tunbridge Wells pretty well, with Sandwich and Canterbury from before, but not having a car myself little exploring beyond was possible. I missed a good many beautiful places. Perhaps a holiday from my home in Gloucestershire, which I know really well, is in order.
YAY! Faversham made it - top spot. Today is the antique market and is heaving in town and if you have filmed it today will be even more amazing!!. A very busy town centre today, everyone out and about!. Love Faversham. 💖
As a West Saxon(😎) living near Midhurst, I think your list is absolutely spot on. For tea, coffee and antiques - (and as antiques!) - my lovely wife and I ricochet like human pinballs between all the places on your list!
With parking in Midhurst being what it is, can't say I blame you!! 😂
@@TheHoveHeretic Ah basically they don't want us to travel in our own cars at all, seems to me....
West Saxon means you’re from Wessex!
@@jamesmurphy1389The problem at Midhurst is down to being both a busy town as well as the crossroads of two busy routes, the main shopping area being on that stretch where the A272 and the A286 are in reality the same road ... and t'ain't even an unduly wide or particularly well sighted one. A tad further east, Petworth, lies at the junction of the A272 and A283, with the added bonus of the A285 also rocking up in the town centre. At least the large car park there is less of a yomp from the actual centre .... though from the behaviour of some entitled idiots around the Market Square, you'd be hard pressed to know it.
@@Stoggler well doesn't that include Sussex? 😎
Born in Greenwich and live in Cambridge ❤
I wondered why you did not include the city of Chester, but of course you are quite right, even though the Romans established it as one of their main bases in Britain. It didn’t actually have city status until 1541.
Faversham no 1? You've got to be kidding? Even Dover is far prettier.
It must reflect the fact that East Sussex doesn't have many towns (I assume) as places like Bexhill and Eastbourne can make their way on to a top 10 of prettiest town. I used to live in Hastings and know East Sussex very well and absolutely agree with the number 1 choice: Rye is simply beautiful. I didn't realise that Winchelsea was a town but glad to see it on this list. I think it should be noted that it's the old town in Hastings that makes it in any way special - and the old town is certainly a wonderful gem. The rest of Hastings is bog standard.
Surprised you haven’t included Ripon in North Yorkshire
Excellent, interesting video. Really glad I stumbled across your channel.
Ah cheers!
Lots of these areas are now building sites with horrible new builds everywhere
The oldest city was Camelot. Just still need to find its ruins lol
I lived in Steyning for 6 years - it’s officially a village, yet has one of the largest schools in the Country consisting of over 2300 pupils which is astonishing for a village In now live in West Worthing, right by the sea 😊
I'd like to correct you, Steyning is very much a town.
@@michaelgurd7477 not really, it’s a large Village - Haywards Heath and Worthing are Towns - Steyning is officially still a Village, albeit a large one - trust that helps 👍🏼
As far as I'm aware, Steyning has an active market charter going back to the medieval era, which qualifies it in my book.
@@AlexinGreatBritain - yeah, you’re actually correct….but if you ask the locals- they’d swear it’s a village 🤣😉
Steyning is a town, has been for centuries. It was significant enough to have had its own members of parliament. Check out Horsham District Council’s website, or the parish council’s site, they all state it’s a town.
They are all pretty towns, but you might think you're not in England if you visit some of them now, especially Crawley.
How come Trashf….. oops I mean Ashford wasn’t on the list? 😏
ps arundel is beautiful
really interesting, never heard of steyning or whatever, looks lovely or midhurst
Aylesbury became the county town of Buckinghamshire in 1529, Some of us in Buckingham are still a bit pissed off by this.
Good thing you didn't head any further West of Rochester....or you could have done a list of the ugliest towns in Kent🤣
