Those mountains in Norway. What a way to open a movie. Those Norwegian mountains may not give away the plot to the movie, but they are majestic. Norway, a place I hope to visit someday. Yes, we love this country!
It's been ages since I read the book. But I'm pretty sure in the book the grandmother mentions that witches are born in the snowy mountains. So I'm guessing this opening credits is a reference to it.
JParish5990 Messylin my theory about this opening was: This is the witches journey (via broom) into the country across mountains and snowy plains. No one ever explained this, but I assume my theory is correct - I mean, why else would the opening be from the view of someone / something flying across mountain tops? 😜
For those who are wondering, the film wasn't dedicated to Henson even though he had passed away by the time it came out, because it was made in 1989 and was on the shelf for a year. I know this because I see the copyright year at the end is 1989. It also introduces Jason Fisher even though he had done Parenthood the summer before. He might've filmed this first
One day, when I was at my grandma‘s house as a kid, a friend of her came over and brought her niece. That girl wanted to watch this movie at all costs, even if I warned her that it‘s pretty creepy. But no, she wanted to watch it! So we put on the VHS and I had the impression that she found it rather boring than exciting. The next day the mom of that girl phoned my grandma and was very upset, because her daughter got a nightmare from that movie.
The Witches (1990) Anjelica Huston as Grand High Witch. Also in the cast are Mai Zetterling, Rowan Atkinson, Bill Paterson, Brenda Blethyn and Jasen Fisher in their supporting roles.
It must of taken them alot of time to actually go in helicopter and and film this not only that but it must of been freezing but this opening is just amazing and reminds me of the grand high witchs point of view whilst going to find a child to destroy, just amazing
Anyone else feel the Camera man was using a Wingsuit to take these beautiful shots? Must have been having the Time of his life taking these wonderful shots.
The Witches was the last theatrical film that Lorimar made before they were folded into Warner Bros. Television in 1993. I wish the credit on the opening sequence of the film read, “Warner Bros. and Lorimar Filmed Entertainment Present” which would have made more sense considering that when the film was in production Warner Communications, the then-parent company of Warner Bros., DC Comics, Mad Magazine, Warner Music Group and Warner Books took over Lorimar-Telepictures before merging with Time Inc., the then-parent company of HBO and Time Life to form Time Warner (now Warner Bros. Discovery).
Yeah, the Grand High Witch was pretty hideous underneath the costume and makeup. Luke's reaction- at first viewing) was similar to mine. She was also the ugliest compared to the rest of them, the others just the had the wigs and gloves. Not the G H Witch, oh no, she was in a full fledged costume!
Tim Burton directed Charlie And The Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp as Mr Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket in 2005. Steven Spielberg directed The BFG starring Sir Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie in 2016. Now Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo Del Toro are bringing The Witches starring Anne Hathaway as The Grand High Witch and Stanley Tucci as Mr Stringer this year.
When you read a Roald Dahl book it's clear that he was very much ex - military (The way he wrote & used certain measures etc). The fact that even he was horrified by & hated this movie says a lot 😕
This movie was released in 1990 and Roald Dahl (the author of the book) and Jim Henson (Executive Producer) both died in 1990. And, ten years later, Warner Brothers started making Harry Potter movies. Creepy.
As a kid I believed that the opening scene was the Grand High Witch flying to her next destination.
That's always what it made me imagine.
That’s definitely a possibility
Or a New Witch, having been born in the Mountains, flying to the meeting.
Love the music 🥰🥰😍
Same here!
My absolute favourite childhood movie!!! 😁😁😍😍😍
Haha, in my top 5 also ;)
It was scary for kids movie.😂😂😂
As a kid, I thought this opening scene was spooky, cause I knew what was coming, ahh innocent times 🤣🤣
When i first saw this at the age of 8, (over the snow) i use to think you were looking through the eyes of the witch on her broomstick haha
No movie has ever made me feel more scared as a kid than this movie lol
0:40 the cackle of a sly witch
Yes I LOVED the laugh as a kid.
@@BB-or8gi That laugh gave me nightmares as a kid, what are you talking about

What a fun and rousing intro tune to begin a super fantasy film. Love this movie, especially the Henson Workshop goodies.
This is my favorite movie to watch during Halloween!
I love this movie

Did you know they initially considered Debbie Harry of "The Blondies" to play the grand high witch?
Who was he in parenthood?
@@mantistoboggan5171 Steven Martin's hypersensitive son. The one whom was afraid of everything.
One of the few family movies where the villain is the main charaktar. Clearly shown as Anjelica Huston is the sole name listed before the title.
The movie is a masterpiece!
A truly wonderful movie for all ages, love the opening and closing theme. And of course, Anjelica Huston was phenomenal as the grand high witch!
A movie that brings back childhood memories and it's awesome.
Quite catchy
I can't thank you enough for posting this.

Yup
RavenclawBoy FanBoy Who’s playing the Grand High Witch?!?
finally on blu-ray thanks to Warner Archive
I loved this movie as a kid.
Kind of reminds me of the opening credits of the first “Superman” movie.
Am I the only one who noticed the grand high witch laughing in the beginning?
Nope. Did you know they initially considered Debbie Harry of "The Blondies" to play the grand high witch?
When I was a kid this opening seemed 1000x more ominous than it does now
Always reminded me of mint choc ice cream. Till this Day
This is the scariest movie of my childhood! I saw it almost immediately, as soon as it was shown on Russian television. And I'm naturally shit bricks!
Anjelica Huston, you absolute beauty 🥰🥰❤️
Breaking up with Jack Nicholson was the best thing to happen in her career.
