This is such a Classic Halloween Movie. It will never get old. One of my favorites and gets me in the Halloween Spirit every year. Bette Midler did a Great job playing Winifred Sanderson. I don't think anyone else could have fit this Character besides her (:
I still can't understand why the Nostalgia Critic doesn't like this movie... this was a way to keep the adults out of the way... a way to get in a killer song... also a way to show how cunning and intelligent -the witches- Winifred is. This scene actually had a point. The 90's jokes and hokieness are actually quite forgivable, because of the clever writing and its dazzling Halloween spirit. Barely any plot holes. Memorable characters. Comedic and family-friendly, yet terrifying and climactic, even a good aesop at the end. Essential Halloween imagery. Fantastic soundtrack. A damn good Halloween family movie that's still being talked about (even made into merchandise now) since 1993. That to count for at least something.
I think his taste is heavily based on first impressions, he watched it as a kid and didn't like it so that stuck with him. Which is honestly odd since this type of humour and characters completely works for him with other movies but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I and many others love this movie to bits.
I’ve literally seen this movie a hundred times. When we were kids we wore out the tape in the VHS and broke it. Bette Midler was so fantastic in this movie she will always be one of my favorite people.
Fun fact: when Bette says, "Hello Salem, my name is Winifred. What's yours?", it's a nod to her role in Gypsy (which also came out in 1993). In that film, towards the end, she sings, "Hello everybody, my name is Rose. What's yours?" Both are great movies!
I love how she stalks Max off the stage whilst singing and how each of the kids surrounded by the dancing Adults realise they are alone and that Note Bette Middler hits at the end always gives me goosebumps! Great movie❤❤❤
They had to be having fun doing this. This was a fantastic movie, and this scene was one of the funniest in it. When the actors are having fun, it just makes the movie better, because the audience can tell the movie was clearly made with genuine affection and enjoyment by the cast. Not enough movies these days have that crucial spark that turns a silly movie into something truly special. Hocus Pocus was made in the best possible era for it with the right cast to make it amazing!
Well, they had to make it look like it was staged, otherwise the kid would've done screwed them royaly (even though they still failed) I think she meant for the kids to keep dancing too
Given that the last time the adults interfered the sisters ended up dead for three hundred years it would be to their advantage to ensure that there is no interference. Between Sarah's magic controlling the children and the adults dancing until they die, they only have one child, two teenagers, and a cat to deal with. Certainly less of an issue then the possibility that the town finds out who they are and fights back. The potion makes them biologically young and beautiful forever, but that does not mean that they cannot be killed.
@@supremevampirekingofimagin3130 In the film, the spell they cast before they were hung means that they cannot be killed on Halloween night unless the black flame candle runs out otherwise when the witches were incinerated it would've been the end of the film lol.
@@ss04to06 I am aware, I am also aware that being incinerated cost them precious time and they had little enough of that as it is. Even if the adults cannot kill them, they can cause no end of trouble until time finally runs out or restrain them. This time limit is partly why despite their inability to be killed, Winnifred is so determined to get her book back and drain the lives of the children before sunrise. Trust me when I say that when you have a strict time limit attached to magic, you want as few possible problems and obstacles as possible especially if the cost of failure will affect you personally.
I love the way this was organically written into the movie. The little things that lead up to this so that it makes perfect sense in context of the film are what make it great.
Did anyone else notice how creepy Mary's smile/laugh at around 3:29-3:30 is when you think about it? Not only did they realize Winifred's last minute, spontaneous plan worked, but she's genuinely amused and delighted by it knowing that everyone was literally going to dance until they died. I love it!
Yesssssssss, you get it haha The whole thing, if you look at it from a "real" lens rather than a hokey lens, it's super creepy! They are delighting in killing people!
after watching the second movie, it just highlights how iconic this movie really was. don’t get me wrong, the second movie was great, but the way this film incorporated the song in a way that made sense just made it ten times more epic.
It's always so telling to hiw smart and cunning winnifred is...at how quickly she can adapt and respond to her surroundings...how quickly she realised how to place a spell on the parents and keep them out of the way
Yes, but Bette Midler sang on Broadway and has Tony awards. She also sang "From a Distance". She also guest starred in Seinfeld show as herself in the 90s too. Bette is a Superstar!
I love how the lead skeleton singer is eyeing her, then she starts singing and he's like "Yes, I love it! Get her on stage, I gotta see this!" I have to wonder how much of that was her magic or if he was just really into it.
@@saklee1777 her vocals are amazing but she uses magic from the start. Music alongside her singing is playing out of nowhere, and the parents are laughing while the little girl screams "cover your ears!" So yeah...
Ugh, hands down the best Halloween scene ever. It's so lowkey sinister & deliciously sad. The desperation of the kids trying to speak the truth. The manipulation & power exerted by the witches. Having to abandon the people, that you've always thought would be able to protect you, to dance until they die in a dreadful effort to save them & the town. The witches truly delighting in the manipulation & perceived death they've caused.
The way the three witches captivate the audience is just the best plus Bette, Kathy and Sarah are perfect to portray these witch characters! 😁 Hocus Pocus is one of my favourite movies and I cannot wait for the sequel Hocus Pocus 2 that premieres this November ❤️
3:30 Not only is that final note KILLER, but I also love the little detail of the brass players in the back dancing and bobbing along really feeling the music. Especially because you can really hear the horns at that part.

My name's Winifred, what's yours?
I put a spell on you
And now you're gone
My whammy fell on you
And it was strong
Your wretched little lives
Have all been cursed
'Cause of all the witches working
I'm the worst!
I put a spell on you
And now you're mine!
Watch out, watch out
Watch out, watch out
If you don't believe
You'd better get superstitious
Ask my sister
I put a spell on you
I put a spell on you
Ah say, ento pi alpha mabi upendi
Ah say, ento pi alpha mabi upendi
In comma coriyama
In comma coriyama
Ay, ay, say bye-bye!

It a joke but this is one musical group that is going to go out with a bang literally
When I was a kid I thought the parents were so dumb for not listening to the kids, but now if my niece came and started saying there were real witches in a Halloween costume party, I wouldn't believe her either
I love this songs and i love hocus pocus
