It is even more plausible considering...
    1. Luke is younger, lighter, and probably a lot more fit than Jamie.
    2. He may have had a lot of experience with grapplers around Beggar's Canyon.
    3. Luke received a good luck kiss.
    4. Both Luke and Leia are Force Sensitive.
    5. It was a life threatening situation (or so the Stormtroopers were ordered to make them believe).

Yeah your first point is probably the most important. Both Mark Hammill & Carrie Fisher were really small when filming the movie. Jamie might genuinely be close to their combined weight at the time. this test really needs to be done with a 17-18 year old athlete like a high school wrestler from a lower weight class and a small cheerleader who can hold on without assistance. Then the Luke stand in could probably support quite a bit of their weight through their arms reducing the strain on the waist harness.

Luke's METAL belt was probably twist and flex resistant, just from looking at it. Also stronger and lighter. So it would not have rode up the ribs like that safety belt. Also, when you have a belt taking the load there is not nearly as much stress on the arm holding the rope, so it is not only ' plausible ' but ' highly likely '.😮

Sophia: "Jamie, can I be your Princess Leia?"
Jamie: "Sure. Where'd you put the metal bikini?"
Of course it's plausible for Luke to hit it on the first throw. He wouldn't have that grappling hook on his belt for no reason. It's not just for decoration and it wouldn't be his first rodeo. He probably played and practiced with it since he was knee-high to a womp rat. And where did they get that 5'6" height for stormtroopers? Mark Hamill was "a little short" and he's 5'9". As for the weight, they're in a galaxy far, far away. Nobody said everything weighs the same there as it does in the Milky Way. Or is the same size. For all we know, the humanoids there could actually be about the same size (and weight) as a 12" GI Joe action figure.
Next up: have Han Savage flee an entire squad of stormtroopers armed with paintball "blasters" and see if all of them will miss with a hundred shots. Plausible? Let's find out!

As someone who saw the original cut of Star Wars in the theatres before wide release and re-editing, I always thought that they should have left in Luke's first attempt (which missed). I know it tightens the sequence up timing wise to just make it in one attempt, but it's more realistic that he missed the first time. EDIT: since it wasn't clear, I saw Star Wars in May 1977 in Orlando, Florida when my family was on vacation. It didn't get wide release until late June back home. The May 1977 version I saw had the extra scenes of Luke watching the battle, missing with his first attempt to connect the grapple hook, and the Death Star was NOT about to fire on the Rebel base (that was done in re-editing for the wide release), among other differences!

First, Luke has the Force. He's not proficient in using it yet, but he's been doing things with it since he was born, without knowing it was the Force.
Second, what is gravity like in that chasm? The Death Star isn't the size of a full planet. And it's designed really dumb. It's not like an onion; levels are mostly flat across it. Each floor has to be generating artificial gravity, but only upward. Since there's no walkway, there's less than normal gravity. There may be more natural gravity coming from above than below, for all we know, since we don't know what level they're at.

Both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were in full harnesses while clipped to each other and the cable.
