  • Napoleon: Total War 1vs1: Bomb Ketch vs Rocket Ship
    Nation: France vs France
    AI Strength: normal
Bomb ketches are support ships, lobbing mortars at distant targets during naval battles. While inaccurate, mortars deal heavy damage if they find their targets, killing crews, and sometimes causing fires. Due to their inaccuracy, bomb ketches are best used against large ships, or against clusters of ships. Bomb ketches have a few cannons for self defense, but they have very weak hulls and are prone to exploding; they do not survive direct combat for long, even against frigates, and they are best kept on the sidelines. Bomb ketches have some advantages over their later counterparts, rocket ships: bomb ketches don't need to directly hit their targets to damage them, making them somewhat more reliable; bombs have the potential to deal more damage than rockets at the cost of not necessarily being able to light ships on fire; finally, bomb ketches are lightly armed with cannons on each side while rocket ships only have stern chasers. Some factions' ship statistics are different from others; differences are listed below (traits that to not differ are not listed). While French and British ships normally have better hull strength than their counterparts in other factions, this is not the case for bomb ketches.
Rocket ships are support ships, raining rockets on targets from a long distance in a similar manner to Bomb Ketches. While these rockets innately deal little to no damage, they have a high chance of lighting their targets on fire, forcing them to either stop combat and repair or risk burning up and exploding. Due to their inaccuracy, rocket ships are best used against large, slow targets, such as large ships of the line. Unlike most ships, rocket ships cannot self-repair during a battle, making them even more fragile. Rocket ships are very weak in ship-to-ship fights, with very weak hulls and practically no defense up close, their stern chasers being very weak and few in number. They need to be kept a significant distance from enemy fleets during engagements in order to survive, retreating quickly should enemy ships approach. Should they be the focus of enemy fire, however, rocket ships tend to explode, so keeping friendly ships at a distance can help minimize collateral damage. Some factions' ship statistics are different from others.

Rocket ships are scary against formations of big ships.

Both are support ships, not ships of the line. I usually use the rocket ship more, because they burn enemy sails, making big ships dead, I use 2 in a full stack. Bomb ships can't do that, but because of they also have superior range, they force the enemy to move and make mistakes, I normally use Bomb in early games

Bomb ketch can set on fire enemy ship aswell, but i think you need at least 4 of them and it must be a good shot (I have done a one random batlle against british ship with was blocking my Sea trade route, soo i took my little fleet with 4 Bomb ships and 2 manowars).

@@znajomyskaliczanin9196 I had to check the wiki they mentioned they are able to break masts, something I remember doing a lot, but starting a fire is rare, maybe because I never used 4, just 2 were enough to make the AI break formation. They are kind of cheap, around 300 upkeep, but with the same price I can take a carronade o a fitfh rate, both faster with a very nice damage for it costs (carronate) or speed and range (fifth rate)

Both these ships can annihilate bigger shps but struggle with small ones since their projectiles fail to connect 90% of the time

I think you'd like Ultimate admiral: Dreadnoughts. The gameplay and controls are pretty similar to total war, but lets you build and command warships with technology from 1890 to 1940. It's still in early development, but it has potential.

In my opinion the Bomb Ketch is a slept-on ship, recently with a full stack as Austria with two or three Bomb Ketches I was able to almost entirely annihilate Nelson's fleet.
the ships just disable the enemy at range, leave them on fire and let them burn. and if you draw out the match the enemy will go up like the 4th of July

It was dumb that they included these ships, as they're meant to bombard shore targets of which there aren't any in the game. Actually really disappointed with how the implemented naval battles in Empire TW, especially since it's something I was really looking forward to and the models look great.

To be honest that film was a good reason for why I don't use either - their projectiles suffer from poor accuracy and they themselves have very poor deck. The only reason they were able to hit eachother was because neither of them was moving - but it wouldn't take much for even the lightest of ships to come to close enough to them, without even suffering much damage, and eliminate them from fight.

if you're asking why he's clicking on the enemy ship to attack rather than rely on fire at will is because the enemy AI also basically just right clicks on your units to attack them. it's more fair to do right click attacks against the AI in tests like this

because they can usually start major fires on larger warships if they do hit. but overall support ships in NTW are rather useless the same way you can beat the entire campaign without getting skirmishers
