The Elizabeth plant opened in 1963 and at its peak, between June 2003 and July 2005, produced 780 vehicles per day, including the VY Commodore, the Adventra, Crewman, Caprice and Statesman. In its final year it produced 175 cars a day.
I believe that a lot of the various VY/VZ models variations can be put down to Peter Hanenberger who was GM in the late '90's and early 2000's. He may have been German but he loved Holden and from what I've read he fought very hard to ensure Holden had lots of models off the Commodore platform _ Commodore sedan, wagon, coupe, ute, one tonner, Adventura, Crewman and the AWD system as well. He worked so hard for Holden, in fact, that apparently GM hated the sight of him, because he was so tenacious and didn't let up about getting a fair go for Holden and he kept going until he got what he wanted. Once the VE came and Hanenberger was gone all the variations stopped (except (sedan, wagon and ute). I read the following about him recently..."It’s not my General Motors any more, It’s [now] a very short-sighted company. For me General Motors was a global player. Today General Motors is shrinking to an American company with no foresight, which is in very bad shape, which has missed the market. I believe we now have a management in place with General Motors that has no foresight"
This used to be a place where a man could find some work Put together Holdens or a foundry job at worst I can hear the noises coming from the Karawara deep into the night The roads were filled with kids playing after dark Sent to get their fathers who were sitting at the bar Eat, sleep, work, drink, that's all they ever did Oh, they're shutting down our town They're cutting down our town No more production line blue collar can be found They'll tear it to the ground They're shutting down our town Oh, they're shutting down our town I started raising hell before I came of age Running from my past with clenched fists of rage And I fought my way through every other day, never looking back And everything I knew was back there on those streets Every lesson learned kept me on my feet But I can't help thinking of the ones I left behind Oh, they're shutting down our town They're cutting down our town No more production line blue collar can be found They'll tear it to the ground They're shutting down our town Oh, they're shutting down our town Oh they're shutting down our town They're tearing out its heart It wasn't much to look at from the very start Herded all together From many different lands The old folks stand around While they're shutting down our town Yeah, they're shutting down our town They're shutting down our town And I finally came back home, found some peace at last Was time to stop running from the demons of my past Some that I remember but the rest are changing way too fast Yeah, they're shutting down our town They're cutting down our town No more production line blue collar can be found They'll tear it to the ground They're shutting down our town Oh, they're shutting down our town They're shutting down our town You know they'll tear it to the ground Yeah they're shutting down our town They'll tear it to the ground They're shutting down our town Yeah they're shutting down our town

This is the Jimmy Barnes I remember and love, not the one who sang River Deep Mountain High (not to disparage that song but ... ). And you know, we've been sold out since the 80's when John Williamson sang True Blue. Or even prior to that. This song by Jimmy (written by Troy Cassar-Daley) is another sad reminder of how far this great country of ours has bent over backwards at the expense of our integrity. We once were the lucky country. We once were the free country. We were AUSTRALIA. But we aren't anymore. Hats off to you Jimmy for turning out something that makes us all realise what a sad plight this country is in. Let's not live under rocks anymore! We need to fix the mess that has been made of Australia, but the question is HOW? How, when we are lead by governments that are too ready to sell us down the river; governments that have been too ready to back off, bow down, forget what we stand for. How? This now brings to my mind an old classic song: To Dream the Impossible Dream...

Fantastic song to trigger the heartstrings. The reality is life goes on. Australia only has itself to blame for buying cheap imported vehicles. You don't buy the product of course a company cannot survive. If you have a Holden made here, hang on to it. God bless Australia
I remember seeing them crushing the factory machinery at Fisherman's Bend and it was depressing. The best thing I ever saw was when they were building the Holden 5 lt V8, there was a bloke who had been there for ever and would rev the engine and listen for any faults, just his ears no tools.
Jimmy I have watched this music video many times but today I teared up for the first time in years. The reason being my 1 year old son watching it with me. He will never get to experience what we did with Australians producing their own car and Australian manufacturing in general. I’m going to do my best to show him “what we could do”
I was there the day of the closing and even though I am a Ford man first, this is so sad as Holden made some great cars over the years. Thank you many governments for steadily cutting tariffs down from 25% to bugger all and then none. Was a priviledge to hang out with my friend from the Club VF group in Canberra and NSW to at the plant and see the last day come and go. RIP Holden and Australian manufacturing
Cliff Lee I think Hugh was trying to take the piss out of Greg saying holdens...As an internal wording it was known as General Motors Holdens as a company. Greg is correct whether it was worded right or wrong.
I know we had events to celebrate Holden but the heart of Holden is Adelaide and the state taking away Clipsal we need to give Holden the send off it deserves that it didn’t get in 2020 by getting all commodore models at the royal Adelaide show 2021 for a show and shine with jimmy barns performing that song in front of all those Holden’s

Bloody brilliant song and video JB, awesome tribute, so sad we lost our car industry due to Government and people buying cheap imported cars, RIP Holden Elizabeth
A friend was Holden tester for new cars from Lang Lang proving ground. Certainly not the case. Cars were imported for pre testing and quality .... OPAL is the main thing. Most of the cars are opal. Look at the facts. Yes assembled in Australia with some Aussie products.. But that was the main thing.
This song gets me every time, I worked at Fisherman's Bend for 23 years and also a decent stint at Elizabeth (Final inspection & validation) back in the early 2000's. Of course all things do come to an end eventually. But not as early as they need to through successive weak kneed governments that have consistently worked against Australian industry & interests by kowtowing to overseas interests.
@@wendymcgrath7561 The VE and VF Commodores were entirely Australian made and designed. Holden hadn’t sold Opels for over a decade. GM made Holden start importing Daewoo crap and rebadging it as Holden in the last ten years or so. Crap cars too that trashed the Holden name. They should have kept importing Opels, at least they were decent cars.

What hurts the most is every living memory in Australia remembers growing up with a holden or a Ford, now there’s nothing left Australia literally grew up with Ford and holden Reminds me of the wee sketch in the paper of the dude driving off in an FX Holden switching off the factory lights for the last time

yep Aussie brands of whitegoods like Westinghouse/Kelvinator/Electrolux now all made overseas, even the iconic Hills hoists now made overseas..
Praise to Jimmy for putting into perspective what this country has lost for generations to come.
Also a big shout out to Troy Cassar-Daley for writing this moving song.
This country is going backwards fast.
#Holden were financing the Assad and Putin regimes, getting the Axe is the natural consequence of starting wars & slaughtering hundreds of thousands of people & creating millions of refugees for everyone else on the Planet to rescue & take care of, is it not #Holden?
Only drive a Holden if you support Terrorism!
Everyone who supports that Car Manufacturer is a War Criminal and a Terrorist, end of story
even though the song refers specifically to the Holden plant, it really represents the entire Australian car industry. It certainly was a sad sign of the times to see all car manufacturing go offshore.
Great song Barnesy
It’s also about his life as well, I think it’s the best song he’s done in years. RIP all manufacturing in Australia! Australia, we’ve all been sold out.
Fuck off it does!

The Elizabeth plant opened in 1963 and at its peak, between June 2003 and July 2005, produced 780 vehicles per day, including the VY Commodore, the Adventra, Crewman, Caprice and Statesman.
In its final year it produced 175 cars a day.
I believe that a lot of the various VY/VZ models variations can be put down to
Peter Hanenberger who was GM in the late '90's and early 2000's.
This used to be a place where a man could find some work
Put together Holdens or a foundry job at worst
I can hear the noises coming from the Karawara deep into the night
The roads were filled with kids playing after dark
Sent to get their fathers who were sitting at the bar
Eat, sleep, work, drink, that's all they ever did
Oh, they're shutting down our town
They're cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They'll tear it to the ground
They're shutting down our town
Oh, they're shutting down our town
I started raising hell before I came of age
Running from my past with clenched fists of rage
And I fought my way through every other day, never looking back
And everything I knew was back there on those streets
Every lesson learned kept me on my feet
But I can't help thinking of the ones I left behind
Oh, they're shutting down our town
They're cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They'll tear it to the ground
They're shutting down our town
Oh, they're shutting down our town
Oh they're shutting down our town
They're tearing out its heart
It wasn't much to look at from the very start
Herded all together
From many different lands
The old folks stand around
While they're shutting down our town
Yeah, they're shutting down our town
They're shutting down our town
And I finally came back home, found some peace at last
Was time to stop running from the demons of my past
Some that I remember but the rest are changing way too fast
Yeah, they're shutting down our town
They're cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They'll tear it to the ground
They're shutting down our town
Oh, they're shutting down our town
They're shutting down our town
You know they'll tear it to the ground
Yeah they're shutting down our town
They'll tear it to the ground
They're shutting down our town
Yeah they're shutting down our town
My Farther, 2 uncles, Grandfarther and Grandmother built our family by working at this factory after moving from the slums of Wales. God bless Elizabeth! So proud to be from this amazing part of the world.
Born in the "downs" kentish Rd 1986
Wow I just shed a tear watching this. I was there for 7 years, still the best job I've ever had I miss working there so much. Thanks for the song jimmy
CRYING DUMB DUMB
I’m still getting goosebumps
Brilliant song
Brilliant execution
Brilliant Video
Absolute top shelf Uncle Jim
❤️
Wonderful album and delivery! Seeing him next week in Glasgow 1/4 mile from his birthplace.
Could not have put it better myself. Is this now in Your repertoire?
The best new song for Barnsey in years.
It's the end of an era and the end of the best car manufacturer, still proud to call our land down under home. RIP Holden, may you live forever.
A great tribute to the all the now defunct Australian manufacturing industries.Shame on all those that sold us out!!!
We sold ourselves out. I know it's hard to hear, but you know it's true.
@@andrewthomas695Agreed, I personally have driven Holdens for over 40 years. My comment applies to those that have bought imports and sold the country out!!!!
The liberal party of Australia if u want facts, they're dogs
@Merv Stent liberals are far, far worse... they've even broken international laws in numerous occasions... and they're supporters are fucking dumb cunts
Although I am a kiwi ford supporter. No matter how many times that I have watched this video and listened to the song it still hits me hard.
ford/holden both Australian Icons mates, we used to muck around holden vs ford etc, mean while we never thought we would lose either of them
21 years at the Fisherman's Bend plant make this one really hurt.
It may be about Elizabeth but we saw the same thing happen....and it was sad.
Great, relatable song Jimmy. Thanks man.
I did my apprenticeship at Neilson Holden in Vic, then worked for HSV after that. Such a sad time. I spent many days at Fishermans Bend. Hope you're doin' well.
The songs for you my friend, everyone involved was family, Elizabeth, Fisherman's bend, the whole country.
Mate this is for every holden employer, owner, lover and for every australian affected :)
Jimmy yah fuckn legend ! Welcome back in Dunedin any time mate . Don't make us wait so long between drinks next time bro ! Cheers Jimmy , see you next time bro!
As usual Barnsey has captured the loss and heartbreak of the good people who have worked hard for their families but have lost their jobs due to government greed and negligence.
Couldn't agree anymore the day holdens in Elizabeth closed there doors forever broke me no I didn't work there but I had family an friends who worked at holdens for many years an seeing the pain it caused them absolutely killed me it broke my heart as they worked so hard to provide for there families there friends an so on
I'm ashamed of our government an what this place is slowly becoming the government just don't care who they hurt or the businesses that are affected by there decision making we deserve to say who gets voted in
@2:19 breaks my heart. Good luck to you all. I worked for GMH for nearly 25 years, including the production line at HSV.
Fantastic song to trigger the heartstrings. The reality is life goes on. Australia only has itself to blame for buying cheap imported vehicles. You don't buy the product of course a company cannot survive. If you have a Holden made here, hang on to it. God bless Australia
Well said. The public are as much to blame for the loss of Australian car making as the various Governments over the years.
Modern day working class man... Mad respect barnesy. Ya never forgot ya roots.
Its he end of an era and the end of the best car manufacturer, still proud to call our land down under home. R.I.P Holden, May You Live Forever.
I love Jimmy been my idol for 30+yrs .
Still gives me goosebumps 😍
Spent 20 years at Holdens. Song really got too me. Fantastic Jimmy
Where is Holdens?
@@mountainconstructions There left on the road Ain't any left in the town built no more this country going down
Cliff Lee I think Hugh was trying to take the piss out of Greg saying holdens...As an internal wording it was known as General Motors Holdens as a company. Greg is correct whether it was worded right or wrong.
THANKS FOR MAKING SHIT CARS BEER DRINKERS. 👎👎👎 GO TO HELL 💀
2 great singers. Troy Cassar Dayley wrote this beautiful song
Jimmy Barnes sung this beautiful song.
R.I.P my favourite car, Holden
I know we had events to celebrate Holden but the heart of Holden is Adelaide and the state taking away Clipsal we need to give Holden the send off it deserves that it didn’t get in 2020 by getting all commodore models at the royal Adelaide show 2021 for a show and shine with jimmy barns performing that song in front of all those Holden’s
I would say Australia won't keeping taking this, but who am I kidding. The country has been spineless enough to take it for the last 12 years and will keep taking it until we have nothing left but our bare skin
And we voted in the liberals at the last election, fucking disgrace
we keep voting for these f..wits in power..we are to blame
@@stivi739 damn straight, these weak traitors don't care and most Aussies are too short sited to make any change. Boycot Chinese products as much as possible. Look into' Sustainable Australia Party'.
@@MrDeano-eu9rg i agree but when 90% of the crap is made in china..its gonna be hard to change to somewhere else
@@stivi739 yea I know but as much as you can. Look into the party, the flooding of Chinese into Australia is a major problem aswell.
What a legend. Im in tears watching this. The heart has just been ripped out of everything Australia. Its disgraceful. But this man is the ONLY 1 to sing and put his heart into everthing we,ve lost. Love ya Jimmy...xx....Rip Australia...😭😭
The Big Three.... Holden, Ford and Chrysler. They were great times for Australia.
😢
Went to youre latest concert in Dunedin Jimmy . So good ! Still got it . Come back soon
Always remembering Brock 05 💚
Hammering over Skyline like an absolute boss!!!
So good, and written by Troy Cassar-Daley, one of the best Australian songwriters ever.
written by one of Australia's best rock stars sung by one of Australia's beat rock stars
I came here after hearing this man go off on Big Enough. To my surprise what an excellent song, and video. I'm reading all the comments and seeing the history of this factory. I feel for you all that have been impacted by this.
Did Fisherman's Bend close before Elizabeth?
Tell me who didn't own a Holden ??? Aussie History....Where legends were born......HOLDEN...., Sadly missed..
I wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the support you’ve shown me throughout my career,
You’ve always been someone I could call my “biggest fan.” What means the most to me is that you do more than tell me I’m “great” at what I do, or that I’m a shoe-in for an opportunity. You take it a few steps beyond and share the reasons why you think so. Sometimes it seems like you remember my achievements even better than I do myself. I always appreciate your ability to see how my talents can make a difference and you’ve made me a believer too! After a chat with you, I always feel more confident, and for that I will always be grateful.

This hits home for me as well. Even as a 90’s kid this song means a lot to me. I can see so much of my local areas changing, getting replaced or just plain shutting down altogether. It’s almost heartbreaking.
A piece of our national history was lost that day, I may of rooted for fords in Bathurst but I always felt pride in saying Holden was Australian
This is just an inspirational song... There are simply no words!!! These songs never get old.
What hurts the most is every living memory in Australia remembers growing up with a holden or a Ford, now there’s nothing left Australia literally grew up with Ford and holden
Reminds me of the wee sketch in the paper of the dude driving off in an FX Holden switching off the factory lights for the last time
Great song from a great singer. The older he gets the better he becomes.
I couldnt agree more tom i just love jimmy barnes iam from the states and i am so glad i discoverd him
more miserable too...getting lost in the night, whining about change...it comes to us all
Strayla to its core..
Blue in its veins!!!
Barnesy is and will always be the voice of the working class man
Troy Casser Daley wrote it👍. But Barnsey sure did deliver it!!
great work jimmy its a crying shame what happened to Holdens and Elizabeth ...thanks for the memories
It was a sad day in history, just when we started making the best cars in the world. You should all be proud. Great tribute song JB.
I get so emotional when i hear this. It brings tears to my eyes. HOLDEN G.M.H GO BROCK.FORD ALSO.
All but one job I had supplied Holden. My apprenticeship and most of my career. I even had the chance to work in the plant building the best production line in the southern hemisphere. Now I'm unemployed and depressed and don't see a future in this city... I'm so sad and mad but what can I do?
All the best Wayne, i hope you find work, really soon, the Australian car manufacturing workers, should all be proud, hold your heads up high. I have a few holdens and I'm proud of the Australia we were ! 🇦🇺👍😎
Best song Best film clip Best years gone !!!
Love it bro. It moving and sad. All Holden worker should stand proud for all the work they have done for the last 70 years
Jimmy it was well put together you done a good job on this song. It was totally awesome :-) :-)
Always excited abut a new Jimmy Barnes song!! Must admit I have mixed emotions about this one... Love the song, miss our beloved plant too. Great tribute to our great brand though - even Brockie gets a look-in! Thankfully Holden is still the biggest automotive employer in Australia with our global design and development creating more exciting vehicles for our Aussie roads and for my sensational Working Class Man!
goosebumps!
That song hit the core of my guts.
A part of Australian history gone 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I remember working at a kitchen a few months ago on the central coast of NSW,
We had Jimmy Barnes walk in wanting a feed, and he gave us a sneak peek of the music video when we asked about his new album, this was the music video
After slagging him off for the past 30 years as a bogan relic, I now have nothing other than absolute respect and admiration.
Anyone else tear up watching this? Not only do lyrics have meaning it is sad reality of Australian manufacturing
It is a crying shame that we have lost our manufacturing industries here in Australia. But when the wages in Australia got to a point that it wasn’t financially viable to continue against the global market, it had to be expected.
2:20 you can see the emotion
AUSTRALIA isn't AUSTRALIA anymore we are gone R.I.P AUSTRALIAN motor industry
He is right when he sings this song
Now I know why all of guys have moved over seas
I get so emotional when i hear this. It brings tears to my eyes. HOLDEN G.M.H GO BROCK.FORD ALSO.
Great song Jimmy, Into the favourites. Can’t wait for your next tour.

Excellent song.... sounds very Springsteen in both music and themes.
Yes Euro Sydney, you are right! I didn't pick it up until I read your comment. Don't know if you're a Springsteen fan but it instantly makes me think of his song about the closing of the Steel Mill in Youngstown. Its called "Youngstown". Good call on the similarities between the two.
I can see myself driving on the highway, cranking this song right up. Brilliant!!
From 1st listen, an instant classic song, if that's technically possible, fantastic chorus.
Incredible song.
I love this song as I can relate as comeing from scotland were most industry is shutting down so it's a good song well done j.b and r.i.p holden
Makes me cry but love this song...
Hello how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here
I honestly thought when I heard this on the radio that it was just a hokey barnsy cliche for a quick money grab. Now with the context of this video I have completely changed my mind. I absolutely love this song. Genuine goosebumps with all the old Holden factory footage and I felt a kinship with all other Aussies doing it tough in this day and age.
I grew up with you in Elizabeth this was our life and they took it from us so very sad but thanx for a brilliant song and even more brilliant the execution love ya always Jimmy xx Cathy
RIP Holden I love you..
Why do the government take our legend Holden away..
Life is never going to be the same for me....HQ Holden live on..
Brilliant song, sad too.
Outstanding......The enlightened ones will shed a tear.
the enlightened ones will know Troy was listening to a lot of Springsteen when he wrote this
I live in Elizabeth where jimmy grew up and where the holden factory is. It still makes me sad everyday I drive past the factory and it is 4 years later. The 65,000 people who live in Elizabeth absolutely love barnesy and 90% of the people who live here all drive commodores
I was there for the parade of young and old Holdens in Elizabeth SA my heart goes out to the people that lost their jobs I knew a few blokes that worked there it was very sad the end of an Era
Hello how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
