@@jynupe - No sir! Not even the best team to come out of Yates. They just happened to catch the right competition at the right time. The teams in the 70's were much bigger and faster. Coach Booker was more conservative during that time and stayed on the ground running the UH Veer Offense. Plus, they just couldn't get past Kashmere in Bi-district which was considered the best team in the state during that time. It speaks to the great talent we have in Houston year end and year out. I was at both Jones games that year and it could have easily gone the other way. Too bad Lamar stole most of the top kids in the 3rd Ward area. Yates would still be dominant if it weren't for that and Black flight to the suburbs..
I'll never understand how Yates wasn't voted Mythical National Champions that season.
