  • The second half of the first ever Texas 5A Football State Championship game. Coming into the second half, the huge underdog Panthers trail 19-7. But in one of the most shocking 2nd halves in Texas High School Football history, the Panthers score three touchdowns to win the game and upset Jefferson to win the 3rd state championship in their program's history. This game and team are referenced often in the book Friday Night Lights.

This game was the first time I was in this stadium. I was surprised how cold it was in the stadium. I thought it is fully enclosed except for the roof so it won’t be that cold inside. I was cod soaked by the end of the game. Traveling home was a endless line of cars with MOJO painted on them headed back to Odessa.

I played trombone for TJ on this cold winter day in 1980. The wind was howling through Texas Stadium that day. Everone's hands were frozen. You can't appreciate that just watching the video. TJ had the game wrapped up by the end of the third, but mojo came back strong. You could feel the change of momentum like a cloud coming over. We just couldn't shake that feeling off that despite such a wonderful season, it was destiny for Permian to win. Still proud of the Maroon and Gold. GO TJ!

Permian class of ‘65 …. I always felt if you were playing for a West Texas team the referees weren’t interested in calling a fair game.

I was born and raised in PA as a kid. I remember going to the high school football games back then. It was a huge deal. Great teams for Port Arthur and Permian back then. Fundamental football then

What's with the Permian qb wearing 20? Some kind of tradition?

Seanzilla 62 Permian QBs were considered running backs. So most QBs wore 20, 25, 22. Part of the play calling system. I played at Permian from ‘87-‘90.

In order to become a powerhouse again, Odessa Permian needs a better coaching staff and fresh talent on their roster.

I was at this game too, it was my first year of high school and I was a Hussar at TJ. This was a heartbreaking game and saying it was cold was an understatement.

Monceaux's reopened in the Groves. My father owned Gibson's pharmacy on Gulfway for many years. He made many trips to Monceaux's after work.
