1980 PA Jefferson vs Odessa Permian First Half

The first ever 5A Football State Championship which sees huge underdogs in Odessa Permian defeat heavily favored Port Arthur Jefferson. Permian began the year picked to finish 3rd in their district, tied a measly Odessa High team, and tied Sherman in the first round of the playoffs 0-0, advancing on penetrations. In this half, Permian falls behind 19-7 at halftime, being totally overmatched in the game. The book Friday Night Lights makes many references to this game and this team which is considered one of the biggest upsets in Texas High School Football history.

Port Arthur TJ kicked out tails seems like very time. I played my high school football in Beaumont back in those days. The TJ guys would kick your butt and do it while speaking with French/Cajun accents, LOL.

Bruce Miller is Jamaal Charles' uncle.

Jamaal Charles was such a gifted running back as well as a HS track star. He was having an outstanding career with the NFL Kansas City Chiefs before suffering a catastrophic knee injury. He definitely would have had a Hall of Fame career in the NFL had he been able to play a few more years.
