I always assumed that the gun box was made to fool an x-ray machine, as Bond also has to get it to Shanghai somehow. Lead-lined, perhaps. But that aside, museums in England don't really have very stringent security checks.
One line I've yet to read the love it deserves: "Less of a random killing machine, more of a personal statement." (1:50) Not only Q's telling Bond that that gun is only _his_ and only _he_ can fire it, the line plays further with the "Or not pulled" one: that gun is not to be wasted on nameless goons or random guys, no. It's gonna be used for a killing worth of it, worth of Bond leaving a message to his enemies. Q acknowledged Bond's career, his experience, his work, in an elegant way.
I think you're thinking way too far into this 😂 The grip is set to his finger prints. The bullets aren't. The magazine/s aren't And that gun is otherwise far from exotic or rare status. So plenty more ammo for it can easily be obtained.
@@davecrupel2817 When shot, the bullets will carry the trademark pattern of the rifling in the barrel itself. It's a fingerprint unique to that gun and all guns ever made. Every victim killed from that single gun alone would carry a bullet with that rifling pattern as its signature. Of course, if enemies were intent on finding who the killer was - they'd see it was from this very pistol and none other. They wouldn't know it was Bond's pistol.... just the same pistol used in other shootings if they had access to that information in a forensic firearms and toolmarks table.
Loved this new young fellow as Q. And I only recently … well, a few years ago … found out that Q stands for quartermaster.. the costume designer has outfitted him based on the sixties. Hair. Sixties cardigan. Glasses. Love it. And clearly he is as skilled with the quartermaster tech as 007 is in the field. Bond recognizes his value early on.
That conversation on their interpretation of the painting is such a nice veil for the actual conversation. Q implies that 007 is getting too old and it’s time for him to be hauled away and replaced by a someone younger just as the ship in the painting. When 007 is asked for his view, all he sees is a bloody big ship, formidable and still powerful. That’s the only thing he sees and that’s the only thing that still matters. EDIT: For all of you putting snarky comments about how obvious this is, please don't let me my appreciation for this scene hurt your fragile egos. You don't have to prove you understood it too, I'm sure you did and, trust me, you're really smart. Now, please go away...
"Sike" is when someone conveys something and then reneges on it. I'm not quite sure how Bond can both convey and renege on returning the equipment with the same smile.
That's the one part that always baffled me. How the hell can you keep it in one piece when you're being attacked by all sides? The fuck are you supposed to use instead? Harsh language?
"...a trigger has to be pulled." "Or not pulled. Its haard to know which in your pajama" I just realized after watching this that this is the whole theme in all of Craig's Bond films.
And a very real thing in intelligence based killing colloquially known as "sanctioning". If you read actual military espionage history the choice to kill a target most always lies in the hands of the shooter or kill team involved. This is commonly known as the principle of Operational Control because only an agent can verify that key phrase....Threat to National Security. That's the real world principle behind Bond's "License to Kill." Good observation on your part. JT
It actually added a lot of tension because Boris is like clicking it like crazy and 006 is wondering why 007 is looking at Boris's hacking attempt when he realises it's the effing pen at the last second.
This was a class act interaction between two competent and intelligent individuals. The only true difference between them, however, and kind of wins the argument overall is the gap in experience between them. Intelligence plays a critical role in efficiency, but ultimately it is almost always experience that determines the outcome. Intelligence will tell me everything I need to know that's written on a piece of paper, but experience is going to tell me if I can actually trust that piece of paper or not.
YES most definitely!! I deal with THIS particular matter on my current job circumstances; the younger ones so arrogantly think that they're infallible due to their intelligence BUT they don't have the LIFE experience like I do being 25+ years older
@@VictorTorres-vn6wj Just for clarification, and I hope this applies to you, while I am of the opinion experience tends determine the outcome of adverse situations, I hope people with said experience remember to not let that get in the way of being open to the up and coming newbies suggestions who have the intelligence to be as great as their elders when it comes to working together. I've seen plenty of older people completely run over younger people because they let their pride get in the way (happens to me sometimes with my boss) and can't stand to be wrong when they've been used to using the same methods for years, and don't want to change or adapt to the times.
Q’s absence during Casino Royal and Quantum of Solace had Daniel Craig and myself worried..... seeing him finally show up was fantastic! This guy is the best Q since Desmond! RIP sir!
@@clearcreek69 True! Whishaw is great, but nobody will measure up to the original. The one-shot John Cleese was good, but Llewellyn had just the right sarcasm about Bond.
One of my favorite scenes in the whole franchise. So subtle, so...melancholy, and still a little humorous, right in the middle of a big fat action-spy movie.
"And please return the equipment in one piece." Bond was asways scolded for ruining expensive equipment and there was a basis in fact for this. At the time the first Bond novels were written, MI6 was in fact a clandestine organization that operated off the books with no budget because an official organization could hardly order someone killed. Being an officially non-existant organization which had no official budget they had to receive funds from other organizations who were reluctant to part with them! MI6 had to beg for money and was usually short of funds.
I like how Q had to do some of the banter thing with Bond to gain his respect. As if he had to pass a test to be worthy of his time and attention. It's a nice touch
This is how you do a sequel. This scene plays on the tropes that we expect from Bond, Q and a Bond movie in general. I love that (0:25) Bond doesn't give a single SH*T about art lecture, I love that they immediately get into not just an argument but one that showcases their ideologies perfectly. Love that Bond, most commonly called an English assassin, talks about saving someone's life instead of eliminating them. Love the handshake, Q's earned his respect in Bond's eyes and Bond's earned Q's who no doubt knows Bond by reputation. Love how meta the "exploding pen" line is. WIll the post endgame MCU take any hints? Of course not, they write their movies with the well known "focus group" writing technique
I like how the conversation about the painting says volumes about the characters. Q, being the "smart" one, looks at it from a more thematic and analytical perspective, speaking about how the ship being hauled away for scrap is a metaphor for time passing and getting older. Bond, on the other hand, who's more street smart than book smart, just talks about what he can plainly see, in this case, the ship. The expertly crafted dialogue is a big reason why Skyfall is my favorite Bond movie.
the segments with Desmond Llewelyn as the first Q were always one of my favorite scenes, however this one is subtly brilliant a very worthy Q...even had a great homage to Desmond Llewelyn "bring the equipment back from the field in working order"
This one scene better captures Q's personality and charm better than all of his scenes in Spectre and No time to Die combined. Really goes to show how important a smart script is.
Q's description of the painting seems to allude quite well to Daniel Craig's evolution from Skyfall to and through No Time to Die (hence, also the motif of time)... also, I'm pretty sure this same painting is hung up on the wall behind M's desk in No Time to Die, quite symbolic for Bond
There's actually at the end of this film behind M - the art is very symbolic, in the gallery, it's the Termeraire, one of the battleships that fought at Trafalgar, being decommissioned. In M's office at the end, the picture is of Victory and Termeraire blasting away at Trafalgar so it goes from a weapon being discarded because it's no longer required with people who think they are a relic back to a weapon, reborn, and doing what it does best in the end with people who know what they are like.
I always loved the dialogues between 007 and Q. The classic clashing ideologies of the brawn vs the brains on how to best approach and complete a goal.
Well, duh... With this sarcastic banter!? Every other line could be interpreted as an innuendo. It just warms the cockles of a fangirl's heart, y'know? Very inspiring, indeed...
Bond: (Roasts Q) Q: (Gives him the hard stare) Bond: What are you doing? Q: It is called a hard stare. Aunt Lucy told me its for people who are rude. Like you
I find it interesting how Craig and Whishaw were in Layer Cake and acted very much similar aged men. Here Whishaw is a youngster and Craig is that old ship, almost retired.

The painting was beautifully chosen. _(The Fighting Temeraire by Turner)_ It shows a fabulous old fighter that won *_huge_* fame at The Battle of Trafalgar, being hauled away to be broken up. In her prime she was deadly and victorious. Now look at her... too old, unwanted and unceremoniously slung out for scrap like an old canal barge. Craig looked like he actually enjoyed playing Bond in this one. Easily his best.
He definitely played him with more charm here than the previous two. Whole film it's an homage/love letter to the Connery era films
Casino Royale is better.
He definitely brought more life not only to the witty lines, but in general..!
i’ve been confused why people say this as i’m new to the bond franchise, did craig not enjoy making these films?

Bond in Skyfall: "Or not pulled. Hard to tell the difference in your pajamas."
M in SPECTRE: "A licence to kill is also a licence not to kill."
Interesting parallel.
i did like the idea behind it,the problem is,daniel craig shots EVERYBODY always, period. it makes no sense fro him to say that when M always complains that all he does is killing people they need alive.

A bloody big ship 😅
This scene is pure comedy gold! Absolutely timeless. And Skyfall is one of the top three greatest Bond films ever made.
Only Q could bring a gun with him to a museum...
@platonik filofOz its not a "regular" gun
I always assumed that the gun box was made to fool an x-ray machine, as Bond also has to get it to Shanghai somehow. Lead-lined, perhaps.
But that aside, museums in England don't really have very stringent security checks.
@@Jank1 Not sure a lead lined box would help either, when the security cant see in they'd stop it and get it opened
You guys forget that Q is MI6
@platonik filofOz Small potatoes problem for a Q.
One line I've yet to read the love it deserves: "Less of a random killing machine, more of a personal statement." (1:50)
Not only Q's telling Bond that that gun is only _his_ and only _he_ can fire it, the line plays further with the "Or not pulled" one: that gun is not to be wasted on nameless goons or random guys, no. It's gonna be used for a killing worth of it, worth of Bond leaving a message to his enemies.
Q acknowledged Bond's career, his experience, his work, in an elegant way.
@Angel Robles --- Well said.
Well i think Bond likes M.
I think you're thinking way too far into this 😂
The grip is set to his finger prints.
The bullets aren't.
The magazine/s aren't
And that gun is otherwise far from exotic or rare status.
@@TD_JR The best they'll be able to tell is the model of gun.
Not every gun has a signature rifling pattern dude.
Ben Whishaw is bloody brilliant in every role he plays. So underrated.
Can’t watch this without thinking of him as Paddington!

I love how Q goes "please return the equipment in one piece", and Bond smiles like "sike"
And Q may have meant "equipment" as 007 himself either meaning "good luck" or "you're just a tool of the Queen"
"Sike" is when someone conveys something and then reneges on it.
I'm not quite sure how Bond can both convey and renege on returning the equipment with the same smile.
@@JerryDLTN I like that. A very cold way of wishing good luck
Pretty sure it’s spelled ‘Psych’. ‘Sike’ is given in some urban dictionaries but usually followed by “(incorrect spelling of Psych)”.

@JRPGFan20000 well Daniel Craig does have a punchable face with those bimbo duck lips
And a very real thing in intelligence based killing colloquially known as "sanctioning". If you read
actual military espionage history the choice to kill a target most always lies in the hands of the
shooter or kill team involved. This is commonly known as the principle of Operational Control
because only an agent can verify that key phrase....Threat to National Security. That's the
real world principle behind Bond's "License to Kill." Good observation on your part. JT

Love Skyfall so much! One of my favourite scenes is when Bond is running to M, as she is reciting Tennyson's poem during the hearing.
"We're you expecting an exploding pen?"
Hey. That pen was a Hero.
Bond: They always said the pen was mightier than the sword.
Q: Thanks to me, they were right.
Cue GoldenEye.
Jean-Marie Le Pen ?
I am going to quote you, you know? Thanks!
In all fairness, that's precisely why Bond works in the field and Q doesn't. That dynamic between them works.

**Skyfall** : "Meet Old Bond, young Q"
I couldn't imagine John Cleese being in these films as R without the old Q, Desmond Llewelyn. Unfortunately he died in 1999
Yeah that's the bond history but now it's reversed XD
"And please return the equipment in one piece."
Bond was asways scolded for ruining expensive equipment and there was a basis in fact for this.
This painting and this whole scene encapsulates the underlying theme of all Craig’s Bond films. Brilliant.
I enjoyed closing my eyes here and imagining Paddington and 007 having a discussion in the middle of a Gallery.
“Were you expecting an exploding pen?” such a nice homage to 007 Goldeneye!
The way Q sits down and immediately says “you’re nearly obsolete is perfect”
I love the bit at 1.21 where they size each other up and go "yeah, he's decent."
1:21
"Every now and then a trigger has to be pulled" what a great line and what a great delivery
I love that they gave him the "return the equipment in one piece" line, the traditional final line of Quartermasters meeting with Bond.
"I thought I said: 'Bring it back in one piece ', not 'Bring back one piece '".
That line makes me giggle, every time I hear it.
This scene hits different after No Time To Die

It is curious how he used the radio, but never used the gun.
the segments with Desmond Llewelyn as the first Q were always one of my favorite scenes, however this one is subtly brilliant a very worthy Q...even had a great homage to Desmond Llewelyn "bring the equipment back from the field in working order"
Let me just say that the new Q is the best thing to happen to Bond in a long time.. Well written and acted..
This one scene better captures Q's personality and charm better than all of his scenes in Spectre and No time to Die combined. Really goes to show how important a smart script is.
Gadgets, funny equipments are everything in all good James Bond movies ! Thanks to Q
Love Q’s voice here. It sounds different in later movies. I guess he wanted to sound less like Paddington. Love these two in Layer Cake ❤️
