Win Money Playing Fantasy eSports: alphadraft.go2c... Some thoughts on some of the unfair ways in which Fatal1ty's greatness as an esports competitor is down-played.
fatal1ty was the original superstar of the competitive gaming world, I remember a time when there wasnt a computer gamer alive who hadnt heard his name
I met Fatal1ty in Las Vegas during IPL 5 at a bar. He is an insanely genuine guy, very nice and had a great chat for a long time. A very humble person, great guy! Fatal1ty also had a long chat to Dyrus' Dad about what his training schedule was like when he was playing professionally. Wake up at 7AM, go for a run, train for 4 hrs, have a lunch break, then go on another run or something to that affect. TL;DR. Genuinely nice and humble person
+Hawkinz A lot of the people on the internet have never met me, so they do what everyone else does. Lean towards rumors created by other people who also don't know me... The truth will be told, and that's all I have to offer.
+Fatal1tyTV I think all those who do meet you will have the same impression as me mate. Most are just online shit talkers talking shit over things they no nothing about, nothing new sadly. Thanks again for the good chat in Vegas anyway, it was a damn long time ago but it was definitely a very memorable time from my trip to the USA from Australia. Cheers
+Fatal1tyTV So everyone says you had serious drug issues towards the end of your career. Is that also a lie? I find it kinda hard to believe someone with your reputation for being extremely disciplined would have that problem.
Fatal1tyTV Yeah, that's what I would've expected from seeing interviews with you. It just never made sense that everyone was saying this seemingly ultra disciplined guy would be into that kind of stuff.
Fatal1ty is the reason I started to look at games (Sports, General and video games) in a competitive way. I always played Football (Soccer), quake 3 and other games, just for fun and never look at improving my game in any aspect. TLDR: Fatal1ty was my role model and taught me competition.
He lost every painkiller EU tournament to BorgN9ne or what the polish player was called. he was never in any US based tournament though, cause he was not allowed access in the us.
His philosophy behind peakinging through practice before events always made me admire him. Like you said,an atheletes mindset. All training is timed and scheduled to make players be at peak come gameday. Not out of practice and not overworked/burnt out. Right on form.
People that talk up Zero4 over Fatal1ty seem to forget the score. If I am not mistaken, Zero4 never beat Fatal1ty (I could be wrong, I was still just a kid watching things my brother liked). Edit: Yup, I was wrong
+Chrispollis Quake, UT and the games that they inspired like the latest Unreal Tournament and Reflex are some of the best FPS and esport games ever made. Unlike Mobas and RTS games devs never brought them back in the 2009-2010 era where SC2 LoL, HoN and slightly later Dota2 came back. Unfortunately it's kinda left the genre forgotten for so long but there's plenty of interesting games currently in development you should check it out.
+Chrispollis check out 'gaiia best eu player' and 'stenx 2011' two of my fave videos. even if you don't want to play, you'll enjoy them. quakes biggest problem is there no game that unites everyone, so the population of gamers is split between like 5-6 quake versions, it really holds back the scene. dota/lol and csgo don't have these issues(not to the same extent.) hopefully we get a new quake game that unites and we can get back to having quake as an esport. cheers. mate.
thorin i think you failed to mention how he actually had a MTV special as well on him when mtv was a huge platform still and with cameras and the pressure of being not on something like twitch but a major cable network where even people who didn't play games were watching he had a major tournament which at the time was the biggest money for a e-sports and won it .That to me was his truly Crowning achievement because he was great but with the added pressure he still won.
+stradus "he had a major tournament which at the time was the biggest money for a e-sports and won it" That's incorrect. The tournament he was playing in was CPL Winter 2002 and the game was Unreal Tournament 2003. He only won $10,000 for first place. To put that in context, in Quake 3 the following tournaments were worth more and all took place prior to the tournament you're referring to: Razer CPL - $40,000 (won by Fatal1ty) BattleTop Universal Challenge - $15,000 (won by Fatal1ty) World Cyber Games Challenge - $25,000 (won by Fatal1ty) Babbage's CPL - $25,000 (won by ZeRo4, Fatal1ty finished 7th) Quakecon 2001 - $30,000 (won by ZeRo4, Fatal1ty finished 2nd) Quakecon 2002 - $20,000 (won by LeXeR, Fata1lty finished 3rd)
Okay maybe not the highest pay day for him but it was still one of the biggest moments if not the biggest moment for him because it was how he became a household name in the gaming world I never knew who Zero4 and lexer were at the time because I didn't play those games but i knew who fatal1ty was. and I think you made a great video about him but i believe that was made millions of kids where ever that showed air say holy shit I can make money doing this if I am good enough and while he was actually a great player as your video clearly covers but he did something that transcended E-sports by it's self .....
Are we only focusing on Quake? Stradus may be recalling his 2005 CPL victory in Painkiller which was the highest payout tournament by CPL ever ($1 million total prize pool) and was broadcast on MTV (it's funny to see a young Joe Miller casting as well): CPL 2005: World Tour - $150,000 (won by Fatal1ty)
It's his face. That smarmy grin, condescending look. And it's the terror. His very name carried so much weight, if you had to play him, your soul would shrivel up inside, eaten away by self loathing and doubt, then he'd 30-0 you and "gg" disconnect. Why? Cos you simply wasn't good enough to practice against. You were a skill 2 Klesk bot stuck on a wall somewhere. And that's all you'd EVER be!
my team came in 5th cs @ CPL Dallas winter 2001 (or '02?) and i still have the microsoft natural keyboard he signed after winning the avp tournament (he got a ford focus for that)
Thorin, you're an encyclopedia of sports and esports. What a treat. Talking about the devils and Brodeur; and Messi and Daler and Lexer. Just amazing. Well done.
I was in love with Quake back in the day. Bought a Pentium 200Mhz CPU just to get smooth gameplay and it cost me a fortune back in 1996. £200! A POUND A MEGAHERTZ! Fucking rip off! But it was worth it, and I remember buying a magazine PC Zone, it had maps for Quake, and it had demo files too. I figured out how to play them, and I saw a guy called Q-Tip dominating in FFA. His movement was surreal. I figured out he was using the mouse to look around. So I started doing that. I slapped EVERYONE I knew on LAN, they wouldn't play me anymore. I got Wireplay from BT, at 5p a minute, and I won my first 150 or so matches easily. I started to think I was the best Quake player in the UK. Then I randomly met Sujoy on DM2. He beat me 32-2. I played him again on DM6, he beat me 25-0. I wasn't happy, asked him what the fuck was going on. He told me he was in clan DC, and was one of the best Quake players in the world, so not to be angry. I got put in my place that day. Then as the years went on, I got better, never close to Elite level. Just didn't have the genes for it. But in the early days of Quake III, I remember watching Fatal1ty play - I watched him beat Sujoy even though Sujoy gave a decent enough fight on Q3Tourney2, and I was mesmerized by Fats movement. The way he cross jump straffed. I copied that. I spent fucking HOURS, every day of the week, running maps cross straffing till I had it down. Forward, backward, blindfold. But what made Fat so much better than ANYONE else during that era, and possibly the most naturally skilled player of any FPS ever, was his game IQ. He was never the best aimer, possibly top 5 movers (Toxic, Fox, Tech + Lexer spring to mind). But Fat just DOMINATED those early days of Q3. Nobody dominated that much ever or since. He was the Mariusz Pudzianowski of Quake for a good run.
I watched your Reflections interview with Fatal1ty, and I gotta say it's absolutely laughable he called himself "the greatest gamer," lol. Did he ever win any 1v1 fighting game tournaments? Did he ever win any 1v1 RTS tournaments? Did he make any crazy WRs in speedrunning? Did he play anything seriously at all, other than FPS titles? at best he can call himself "the greatest FPSer," which is still a massive stretch. I find it really annoying that he refers to his match vs vo0 in PK as "the greatest gamer vs the greatest CPMer," lol. How can people hear him say outlandish stuff like this and then go, "yeah nah, he's really such a humble guy!" Calling yourself the greatest gamer when you haven't hardly dabbled in anything but FPS is a massive slap in the face to all games and gamers. Fatal1ty is one of those guys who everyone swears up and down is humble, yet many people dislike him a little for his cocky attitude. You can't chalk up all the negative views to being "haters," of course plenty are just jealous angry idiots who fit that moniker perfectly, but there's plenty of good reason he's as disliked as he is liked, you can't just sweep that under the rug. I think he's a massively cocky dude inside his head who thinks he's god compared to others, he just tempers it IRL by acting very humble. for anyone still reading and not rage-typing some Fatal1ty fanboy response, I do respect Fatal1ty for all he did, and like many others he was the first pro gamer I was ever aware of. He did a great job painting gaming and gamers in a positive light, back when angry religious mothers trying to ban violent video games was at its zenith (I remember), and I respect his perseverance/dedication/practice, he is truly a remarkable dude. He helped give gaming and gamers a positive face and attitude when it was really crucial to do so. He made big money competing in games, and then made smart business decisions with that money later to secure wealth. Same thing Thresh did, except Fatal1ty didn't make anything nearly as cool as Xfire lol. I just wish his head wasn't so far up his ass that he claims to be "the greatest gamer", when he did nothing to deserve such an insanely lofty title, lol. As you've said in past Reflections, all the top guys still think they're the top guys if they tried and practiced and committed; but even that delusion is a far cry from seriously referring to yourself as "the greatest gamer," -- even in the context of 20 years ago, it simply isn't true.
Playstyle-wise (in painkiller atleast) he is the most boring champion I've seen in afps and hopefully we will ever see. If he had magic that was more visceral (ala Vo0) I think he would be more well-regarded especially considering his accomplishments. But instead his magic seemed to be more mental where he could frustrate his opponents into consistently taking bad fights because good openings were very hard to come by due to his avoiding, defensive, and campy playstyle. Literally boring his opponents to death and putting the audience at home to sleep; but holy shit did it work considering the players he bested in tournaments--can't deny the man is a great competitor.
He is playing Quake Champions at the moment and streams everyday on twitch. But says he wont play for money. All of the other guys are also playing. All of them still rip it up.
I have recently started playing quake 3 again, its pretty great mostly because i usually play half-life 1 multi player which is also fast phased and alot of twitch aiming. Does anyone know if there has ever been competetive Half life tournaments?
+wili12345 no clue if hl ever had tournaments, but the best hl player in the early days started playing quake and still plays. his name is garpy and he is pretty good at quake.
I want to participate or play in a video game tournament but I never done a tournament but would like to not sure where to start with.? I have a playstation 5 console .
first "gamer" gear i ever had was fatal1ty headset. it broke after a flight . i liked it. I thought he was a really good quake player. I remember watching some tournies and videos years ago. One of the first pro gamers i knew about.
As of yesterday Fatal1ty was #1 rated for solo queueing in Playerunknown's Battle Grounds in the NA region. Meanwhile the dude struggles to get 50 people on his twitch stream
+aXioS It's not a matter of money, he travels so much between events and to Korea that it simply just isn't worth paying the bill for the amount of time he spends there.
The thing that triggers a huge number of people, I've found, is that, in his position he could've done many things to help the Quake community at many points after he retired, and yet he never did. The same game and community BTW, that made him the first "esports" superstar player. Another thing is, even though he was a fantastic player, I (and many others) think that he is not on the level that players like Cypher and Rapha are. His talent and playstyle can only go so high before they hit their limit and that I feel is not near these two.
+theravenousbeast Congratulations on this post that made me get a Google+ account just to comment. Fatal1ty sponsored toxic and fox through his FPO (Free Player Organization) and sent them to compete in tournaments from his OWN POCKET and didn't want anything in exhange. Also he has sponsored some smaller events. Not to mention the publicity the games have gotten through his persona. I'll agree that he got the most out of it, but it doesn't mean he never did anything. The game and community didn't make him a great player, he made himself to be a great player. He owes nothing, especially to anyone whining about his "lack of support" for the scene. On top of that, why aren't you asking this same question from any other top pro? Why no one asks rapha, Cypher, Cooller, ZeRo4, toxic etc. what have they done to the scene? Because it would be a lot less than what fatal1ty has done.
to be fair - and i'm not a great fatal1ty fan at all - even IF he was only good at the beginning he did the right thing in terms of making money by competing in games..
Fatal1ty is a legend. First esports superstar i believe
Definitely Thresh. Not taking anything away from Fatal1ty.
fatal1ty was the original superstar of the competitive gaming world, I remember a time when there wasnt a computer gamer alive who hadnt heard his name

Fatal1tyTV
Yeah, that's what I would've expected from seeing interviews with you. It just never made sense that everyone was saying this seemingly ultra disciplined guy would be into that kind of stuff.
Interesting
Exactly what i was gonna say
+Pink Freud I hate it when youtubers just get thumbs up for being a youtuber. Annoying.
e o pink mesmo lel
toxjq forever the best q4 player :>

*watches video closure first for alphadraft outro* skips back to 0:00
+Nick Colacchio I love the way you think.
*he also was the world champion at painkiller*
I was waiting for him to bring that up but never did
13:37 He talks about how he was world champion at painkiller.
He lost every painkiller EU tournament to BorgN9ne or what the polish player was called. he was never in any US based tournament though, cause he was not allowed access in the us.
vo0 beat him more times than none during the tour
His philosophy behind peakinging through practice before events always made me admire him. Like you said,an atheletes mindset. All training is timed and scheduled to make players be at peak come gameday. Not out of practice and not overworked/burnt out. Right on form.
20 years from now someone is going to be making a video about Thorin and how fucking amazing he was at analyzing the whole of the gaming community.
People that talk up Zero4 over Fatal1ty seem to forget the score. If I am not mistaken, Zero4 never beat Fatal1ty (I could be wrong, I was still just a kid watching things my brother liked).
Edit: Yup, I was wrong
+Ondraya They were both fantastic players and had their primes, with one following the other.
+Ondraya Zer04 got payback on Fat for CPL
10 new asrock motherboards with Fatal1ty branding inbound
Worst alpha draft advertisement so far
Love hearing you talk about Quake. The good old days.
Creative's Fatal1ty headphones are the fucking comfiest things.

+Ryan Green (SSM) Fair point but not remotely the same price range lmao.
Fatal1ty is fuckin legend
I have old Creative Fatal1ty headseat. It's great.
Have still "alias whine_1 "say Haven't seen that style of lameness since fatal1ty quit playing.;" in my Quake2 cfg :D
Thorin, you should do a who is Vo0? Teach the younglings about CPMA and PK
yay hes doing more quake videos❤️❤️❤️
i'm 19. Never cared about quake never heard of Fatal1ty but the way thoorin talks and the way he pours his passion made me watche the whole video.
+Chrispollis Watch some of the matches with him! Would especially recommend Quake 3!

+ArenaFPS ohai ArenaFPS. Fancy meeting you here.
I'm 20 and I feel the same way as you. I just wish I was older so I could've watched these legends when they were at their peak.
holy wow he knows literally everything
How the fuck do you remeber this stuff
thorin i think you failed to mention how he actually had a MTV special as well on him when mtv was a huge platform still and with cameras and the pressure of being not on something like twitch but a major cable network where even people who didn't play games were watching he had a major tournament which at the time was the biggest money for a e-sports and won it .That to me was his truly Crowning achievement because he was great but with the added pressure he still won.

Fatal1ty is great. A top tier player and he seems like a great guy as well.. I never understood why people hate on him.
@Thooorin I hope you send this to Fatality or he sees this video. I'm sure he would appreciate it.
+Eri- He saw it and responded on twitter.
+Thooorin maybe a new game will come out where he can return and dominate.
my team came in 5th cs @ CPL Dallas winter 2001 (or '02?) and i still have the microsoft natural keyboard he signed after winning the avp tournament (he got a ford focus for that)
Thorin, you're an encyclopedia of sports and esports. What a treat. Talking about the devils and Brodeur; and Messi and Daler and Lexer. Just amazing. Well done.
I believe Fatal1ty played Quake II as well. I think that's where he broke out as an amazing player.
I was in love with Quake back in the day. Bought a Pentium 200Mhz CPU just to get smooth gameplay and it cost me a fortune back in 1996. £200! A POUND A MEGAHERTZ! Fucking rip off! at best he can call himself "the greatest FPSer," which is still a massive stretch.
I just wish his head wasn't so far up his ass that he claims to be "the greatest gamer", when he did nothing to deserve such an insanely lofty title, lol. Would be cool to see/hear one about Cooller as well........................
Best gamer and nicest guy i have ever met. I can't wait to use his new headsets!
I used to duel d3 w. Fat. Cool guy, amazing at dueling. Shame about d3. Long live fat and fps gaming
He didn’t beat toxic on wsvg 2006 lmfao, quake beat him 31-0 on the last map and took the title. It was a total humiliation.
He is playing Quake Champions at the moment and streams everyday on twitch. But says he wont play for money. All of the other guys are also playing. All of them still rip it up.
It's funny how 465 000 USD is what you can now win per week in other games, we've come far.
It all comes down to jealousy because his making money from marketing hardware to this day.
That is the beginning and end of it.
I want to participate or play in a video game tournament but I never done a tournament but would like to not sure where to start with.? I have a playstation 5 console .
fatal1ty was handy with the stake gun in painkiller
I'm rockin an ASRock Z97 Fatal1ty mobo. I had no idea who Fatal1ty was/is. o.o
+Mike L. gamers need to know about him (esp people interested in e-sports)
I really love these videos on the greats of esports I missed out on
Best all round gamer ever.
Argue all you like say what you want.
It wont change the truth.
you look like you have gone skiing in the sun and wore skiishades the whole time...anyway love to content
Has your boiler been broke for a few months mate?!
I wonder how much gamerfood scrilla he got
Practice practice practice
Practice practice practice
I just tasted cereal with wafter it tasted poor
first "gamer" gear i ever had was fatal1ty headset. it broke after a flight . i liked it. I thought he was a really good quake player. I remember watching some tournies and videos years ago. One of the first pro gamers i knew about.
As of yesterday Fatal1ty was #1 rated for solo queueing in Playerunknown's Battle Grounds in the NA region.

So this is a question commonly ignored..... Why you always bundeled up fam? Like I have some money saved up can I pay your heating bill next month?
+aXioS It's not a matter of money, he travels so much between events and to Korea that it simply just isn't worth paying the bill for the amount of time he spends there.
NJ Devils reference...I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy. You are the best Thooorin!!!

I am best the king of silver

True inspiration on how you need to utilize all the hours you can to become better and really highlighting what disciplined practice will give you.
Great video Thorin. Is it true that he was able to practice up to 36 hours in his q3 peak, or just rumor?
