I didn't expect this budget CPU by Intel to perform this well... but it sadly does come with a few significant downsides.

Many thanks go out to Georgios over at #equippr for getting a hold on this CPU for my review. #NotSponsored 🤗
The i3-12100 turned out to be quite the snappy budget CPU, but would you personally grab a Quad-Core nowadays? 🤔
What's your take on "future proofness"? 🤨
im gonna buy one for my sgpc k30,one year for spreadsheet and sims4 since its for my wife..however after one year i might use another itx case
I will happily buy this quad core. People, imho, have misinterpreted things lately due to zero IPC gains during the Skylake period, with AMD playing catchup. Games, and all programs really, aren't much better at multithreading than they were before, it's mostly that with 0 IPC gains for several years, normally insignificant gains from the increased L1, L2, and L3 cache that a CPU with more cores became more prominent. Sure, huge open world games can load down a few extra threads loading in the world faster. Games with a billion NPCs can use some threads. But all games are still single thread limited overall. Anyways, one solid IPC gain from the 10100 (which is basically a 7700) to the 12100 has brought 144hz gaming back to the quad. Anything more than an i3 will be a luxury item for gaming for as long as IPC gains keep coming, that's my prediction. Ill put that cash towards a GPU. Frankly, the 12600K and above are workstation CPUs in my book. If i decide to splurge it will be for a 12500 at most. But i think Meteor Lake will make Alder Lake look slow so no futureproofing for me ill ride the IPC.
Great video. I bought this a little while ago. Decided to put the savings into a better GPU. I'm a gamer first, and this thing is perfect.
Yes, I will. For non-ultra gaming, i3 will do just fine for playable framerates. Will pair my i3 with a mid-to-high end GPU for years to come. For proper future proofing with ultra gaming, will pair something like a 12400F with flagship GPUs. Anything >40 fps is fine for me, as I'm no competitive player.
Exactly! AMD's treating everyone like they're Graphic Designers or Coders who need extra cores when the fact is most of us are just watching RUclips and playing video games.
Coders?
just put a hardware decoder on the SoC or package, or an FPGA, use an ASIC.
At least for me as a music producer, AMD's balance of high core count with single core can make sense.
@@saricubra2867 I appreciate AMD making 6/12 more mainstream. If it wasn’t for AMD we would still have i7s with 4/8. That market disruption is old news though now that Intel pushed back. I want a flipping Ryzen 4/8!
@@JohnDuthie It was intel with the i7-8700K making 6 core /12 thread mainstream, as much as i like Zen 1, single core perfomance for the processors below the Ryzen 7 1700 were sh*t.
@@saricubra2867 Ryzen 1 and 2 had less IPC in comparison but they were good enough to scare Intel. Do you honestly think the 8700K would have been 6/12 if AMD kept rehashing Bulldozer? I guess you mean Intel's 8700K release was the most significant turning point and I agree. Now we need some BUDGET CHIPS!
@@JohnDuthie "budget chips" i7-10700K, Ryzen 5 5600X, i5-12400, i7-11800H, Ryzen 7 5800H, Ryzen 7 5700G, i5-10600K, i5-11400F, i5-11600K, Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 7 3700X, the list goes on and on...
Saw the whole video. What's the downside? It's cheap, has low power consumption, has a free cooler and is great for gaming. It's good for productivity but that's not it's target market. This thing kicks ass for what it is. There's no downsides, because it's competing in its own space.
not good for productivity tasks like rendering and video editing with it’s low core. although for the price, the gaming and normal tasks are more than enough with this, best budget cpu for low end and budget pcs
@@ninx_music
with that logic submarines are useless because they can't fly
sometimes somethings are made for certain application
same for this cpu
currently using this cpu with 3060 ti(soon upgraded to 3080) and not once i experienced cpu bottleneck with it
@@AmirDarkOne yeah you can't get a bottleneck with a relatively new gen cpu and a relatively old gen gpu
it's cheap and good for gaming (as gaming uses 1 core) but it's cores are limited like all i3's and is not good for productivity tasks
@@ninx_music you can indeed get a bottleneck with a relatively new cpu and relatively old gpu, it all depends on the exact specs of the machine
@@Techandgaminggalore Yep, I should reword my comment. You can't get a bottleneck with a relatively new gen cpu, like an i3 12100F, and something like a 3060, 1080 ti or 1060. Something like a 970 will have massive bottlenecks, and something like a 4070 will have bottlenecks.
A 12 minute review just to state that a low cost CPU is outperformed by other CPUs which have 2-8 more cores and cost 2-8 times as much. That's so helpful, honest.
In other news, water is wet.
It outperforms some of them in gaming at 50% of the cost, and that is what matters here.
i have 12100F paired with my trusty 1080TI and its fully sufficent for gaming.
The CPU is excellent for budget gaming, but the motherboards and DDR5 RAM cost too much.
True!
The Asus z690 prime board is $210 plus has ddr4 I got it with my 12600k and then spent more on my gpu.
DDR5 will give you no performance gain.
@@Tome4kkkkactually it gives a pretty big boost in certain circumstances
Finally a review i wanted to see !
These awesome i3s are the equivalent of the Core i9-9900, i7-9700K, i7-10700 and i5-10600K of past years. More than enough playable frames at any settings and resolutions with any graphics card. Who cares if they 'bottleneck' a 4090, if fps is already way >30! 😎
Я бы немного доплатил и взял бы 6 ядер (12400 или 5600х), чтобы не переживать за браузер или лишние проги при игре.
the i3 12100 out performs the i5 10400 in most ways. And it is future proofed as you can easily upgrade to a better 12th gen cpu down the line. And some 12th gen intel mbos are actually really decently priced and have features that will future proof your computer. I am planning on building a pc with an i3 12100, ASUS TUF B660M-PLUS Wifi MBO, NZXT H510 Flow, 500gb WD_Black NVMe Gaming SSD (for boot and games), Silicon Power Value Gaming DDR4 3200mhz RAM, NZXT c750 750w 80+ Gold PSU, and a Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD for mass storage. It'll be a HUGE upgrade from my old current pc with an i5 4670. I am also re-using my 1650 SUPER OC which I am currently using in my i5 4670 PC.
in games, but the i5 10400 is still the better buy. a 6 core will always beat a 4 core.
@@Jeymez yeah that i3 will only triumph in games or 1 app i load but multitasking of big apps i5 will win.
I had 420.- euro’s to build a budget system, i sold my old gaming desktop for 420,- it had an i7-6600K woth 8gb ddr4 and a gtx 1060 6gb, well now i had a budget i could buy everything except for a graphics card, but in my country a RTX 2th hand 20 series are going for less then 300 euro’s so i think i have a good system comming up,
For gamers it punches way above its weight class. Its perfect for gaming. Question tho... Does it keep the 3090 utilization above 90%? If so that's really impressive and may not be so far fetched to pair with.
Bet at 4K, >90% GPU utilization is a given.
Unfortunately it can't hold up 6700XT which is on par with RTX3070, it get's about 70% utilization on FullHD
@@its_pace1 i have i3-12100F and it keeps RTX 3070ti above 90% in 1440p. I play Fortnite, CP2077, RDR2, Witcher3 and Warzone2, and have no issues in maxing out this GPU, while CPU is going from 50% to 80% in these games. One thing I noticed, i get really low 1% in Fortnite in DX12, i need to check is it the case in DX11.
@@grzegolka Interesting, maybe because of the resolution, i'm at 1080p so it's more CPU intensive, especially in Warzone 2 which is very CPU intensive and also poorly optimized, so that's why it almost never goes above 70% of usage. In contrary 6700XT can hit more than 180fps in WZ2, but i'm averaging 120fps with 80fps 1%, and before, when i was having i5-9400F with 5600XT, i was averaging 115fps with 75fps 1% lows, so i did a proper upgrade without proper fps gain, and my goal is 1080p 165Hz, but optimization of Warzone 2 is trash :|
What is your average and 1% in Warzone 2? (i have almost everything on low)
@@its_pace1 Warzone 2 optimised :D I have checked for you 2560x1440 (my native) and 1920x1080, ultra and low. i can't get over 136fps in 1920x1080 low. If I change to Ultra it drops to 120+. In 1440p it's around 120 too. 1%low for these settings vary from 69fps to 80fps. No matter what settings, CPU utilization and GPU utilization in MSI afterburner shows around 50% for both. In other games, I get proper GPU utilization like 95%-99% and CPU depends on game around 50% to 70%
Very good video! There is no need for DDR5 memory for this CPU. The real difference will be with 13 or 14 gen Intel CPUs and DDR5 RAM when the speed will be above 8000 MHz (in a year or two). Right now, the situation is the same as it was every time, when a new memory tehnology was trying to become mainstream. It simply needs to mature and that takes time.
Thank you very much! :)
In what way 12100 suffers in gaming ? eg is it going to max the cpu % ? or max thermal ?
Can this 12100 without graphic card run leaug or TFT with decent graphics or old games like cs go ,dota, etc?
b660+ddr4 = great gaming combo
Indeed!
Which memory brand and model though? For a budget build.
Can i stream with this cpu?
Big losses? Where?
Amd laughs in 7840u. Where that igpu at?
Just ordered a new Dell desktop with Alder Lake I3, will add 8GB of memory, this system will work great for 95% of computer users.
Does this I3 have TPM support?
Yes I believe anything 8th gen and over does
We've been saying 4 core will die for many years but it never actually dies. This would be the last one i think. intels going out with a bang
ONE LIKE FOR HARD WORK
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Curious how a similar speced, INTEL CORE I3-12100 would fare against this CPU ... Only me who is thinking of this ?
The same except the Non F gets igpu
Good for stream with qsv encoder
would I buy one?
let me answer this way: a package from you arrived today 😁👍
Haha, I'm happy to hear you've received my package! :D
Let's be honest. AMD getting some heat from Intel is in the end good for us gamers.
Compare this with ryzen 3 2200g. Which one is better??
Is it's true AMD competitor not the AMD Ryzen 5 3400G Processor (4C/8T, 6 MB cache, 4.2 GHz Max Boost) with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics?
That RX Flop series/Flop VII can't even beat the Titan V/RTX, I mean why else AMD pulled the same stunt as the R9 Not-So-Fury series AND named it so differently?
@@AlfaPro1337 You really should stop smoking whatever it is you are smoking...
@@stuartedwards6996 Maybe you should stop inhaling Evil Su's fart. . .
I mean why else AMD named it so differently then?
What DDR4 memory do you recommend?
3600 mhz unless you don't care about spending extra for 4000mhz both cl16 don't go cl 18 as it runs slower as if it was a 3200 mhz brand doesn't matter get whatever you like the look of.
I got it for 100 it’s the best for its price
Now 5600x $176. 12100 $105. in Ukraine. +$50 +2core, can open game + browser\ds
Deberian meter al 7700k de intel en la revisión.
TAKE THE HIT AND BUY THE I5 12TH GEN. AND U WONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ISSUES WITH GAMING AND STREAMING AT SAME TIME ESPECIALLY IF YOUR SIM RACING N HAVE A BUNCH OF USB DEVICES.. THE FEW MORE CORES REALLY HELPS
