    • @onetwothree4148

      Absolutely terrible design. Those drywall anchors cannot withstand anything close to the dynamic load of a human climbing stairs. Those screws will not hold those hinges.

  • @frankdoss6313
    @frankdoss6313 2 года назад +76

    I see lots of folks talking about under-sized hinges, I'm more concerned about using dry wall to take the load

    • @bobguy6542
      @bobguy6542 2 года назад +11

      The load is transferred to the floor and the elevated floor. The drywall is just holding the contraption upright when its folded up.

      Those drywall anchors are not rated anywhere close to the dynamic load of someone climbing stairs, especially since the stairs are loosely hinged and will transfer all kinds of angular momentum. Those anchors will wiggle loose. The first failure will be the 3/4" screws on the hinges torquing out of the plywood end grain though.

    • @jtcmlt1
      @jtcmlt1 2 года назад +3

      @@bobguy6542 No, it doesn't transfer to to the floor or the elevated deck. The whole weight of the person transfer directly and only to the screws and the hinges.

    • @gavinhassett479
      @gavinhassett479 2 года назад

      @@jtcmlt1 wouldn't it be a 50/50 transfer, 1/2 into the wall and the other 1/2 load into the outside stringer

  • @ryangregory2911
    @ryangregory2911 2 года назад +40

    It's worth repeating that the hinges are comically undersized for this. Disaster waiting to happen. The stringer against the wall is supported by the floor and the vertical portion of the landing so the sheet rock anchors just hold it in place. If they actually had to take load it fall part in a few days.

    • @onetwothree4148
      @onetwothree4148 2 года назад +2

      The 3/4" screws on the hinges will be the first point of failure. Probably would last a few days.

      It never ceases to amaze - and amuse - me how many YT 'experts' fail to see that the plan / design is of greater value that the demonstrated prototype implementation.
      Who would seriously use particle board for unsupported stair treads?!

  • @thomaschristiejr265
    @thomaschristiejr265 2 года назад +13

    The drywall will eventually fail as well. The small screws won’t last as long as drywall under this application. I believe the outside stringer could be mounted like a normal stair with the hinges on the inside corner. That would also guard the pistons holding it in the top position

    • @theyard6958

      Imho Those fasteners aren't carrying the vertical load of the staircase. The plywood stair stringer is doing that. If it safely unfolds properly it should be safe to walk on.

    Not sure what the point of these are, you see builds like this all the time in spaces where you could just build regular stairs. Stairs with drawers would be better suited in most of them. Maybe on a wall leading up to a loft in a garage would be useful so you can park your car, but that's almost never the case where the space saved was used for something useful. Here it was just for a basket of towels, I guess towels are useful.
