Washingtonian here, and though I had no idea about this partnership, it makes sense to me because Washington and Japan have had a VERY strong alliance since the close of WWII. They sent cherry blossom trees to us that now line the streets of many cities, and we helped them perfect the cultivation of the Fuji apple, both as signs of peace and joint prosperity after the war. At least, this is something I was told over and over again while I was in school. There's a LOT more to the Washington-Japan connection, like sister cities (every city in Washington has a corresponding city in Japan, and vice versa), and being a fairly "nice" place to emigrate to back in the day (racism still very much existed here, but it was considerably less for people of east Asian decent than most of the rest of the country).
Nintendo actually saved that baseball teams existence. And I think that people didn’t want Japanese people to own something of an American baseball team.
Now I can see why they have made like two Mario baseball game as its own game and not like the Mario sports mix or something. Makes me wonder if somehow they’ll make another baseball game for switch.

I actually am aware that Nintendo at one point owned the Seattle Mariners. It's no wonder why the Seattle Mariners had so many Japanese players compared to the other teams at the time.
