If Kaitie is so passionate about it being bad, it must be a nightmare. She always find the good in every book.
Right? She always at least points out the missed opportunities and the hidden potential. I can only imagine what kind of new hell this is...
She even managed to ignore the plot holes in Six of Crows because she liked the characters. This must be awful.

1:22:23 Yarros is channeling her inner vegan with her aversion to stakes in this book
I'm definitely going to hell for laughing at this as hard as I did.
😂😂😂
nah, being vegan is a conscious decision, and there's nothing conscious in these books. her aversion to stakes is a primal fear of a vampire, obviously
You win the internet today. Cuz we should all be stealing this. 😂
hahaha this is the best line i've read
reading the 5 star reviews on any of the books in this series makes me feel genuinely insane
Yeah and I've been getting inundated with shorts about this book and lemme say it girlies are _eating it up_ and are sooo excited, and i feel like I'm in a twilight zone 😭 like, how are your standards for what counts for a good book are actually that low
@@sava-smth I actually saw someone say "I think Rebecca Yarros wrote this book to be confusing on purpose so we wouldn't devour it too quickly" the girlies are delusional
@@redjacket2486 some people didn't have a wattpad phase in middle school and it shows 🙏
5 stars on Fourth Wing I can at least understand. I wouldn’t enjoy spending time with the type of person who would rate that book 5 stars, but I can at least fathom their existence. Who could read something like this and think “That was worth every second”? My head-cannon is bots.
@SoundOfMuzek no, a real alive people film themselves for youtube saying it was their favourite in the series... They can't all be paid
Oh, god, I've seen the bandwidth of which people went to on TikTok to defend this book to the degree of "She improved so much and went further into a full-on fantasy setting and not just Romantasy that it's just your fault/lack of skill with text comprehension, that you don't get her genius" that it reached almost a level of gaslighting, when people complained about the quality of this book.
I think, people forget that even with complex world-building and extensive fantasy universes, the author still has to build them and properly introduce and connect elements.
You can't just throw stuff at the wall, then blame the wall, when your shit doesn't stick to it, and walk away.
(And this review pretty much confirms the suspicions I had when I saw those first opinions about the book coming out.)
If Fantasy Nerds struggled to keep up with complex world building, Tolkien wouldn't be considered the GOAT. He poured his whole life into it, and you can tell because of how vibrant and alive his world is. And you can tell Yarros threw it all together by how contrived it is.
@@TheAdarkerglow Yes, and I think, there's an irony of this situation is, that the people telling others "it's not bad, it's high fantasy and you're just not smart enough to get it" are actually the ones not getting high fantasy, because to them it's a random collection of things like Yarros presented them with in OS.
yarros is a venin who draws her power from readers and leaves them empty husks of agony
For book four, just post 90 minutes of fire and the word NO on screen. Like a yule log.
I second this
Just a pile of “Onyx Storm” on fire in a fireplace and a mug of hot chocolate. ☕️ 😂
@ No book burning, just symbolism.
Not a nice crackling fire but a sour smoking one
* Insert clip of Drogon burning KL *
Gonna watch the two other Fourth Wing videos first to refreshen my memory but God, you know things are BAD when Maria and Katie are the ones ragging on this book right out of the gate before WILLIAM can get a full sentence out.
I know lol they weren’t even laughing at it. It must be rough.
Watching people talk about this book, the second powerless, the third lightlark,… I suspect the authors are becoming “worse writers” because they’re writing on such tight deadlines that they have to write whatever comes into their head and they don’t have time to developmentally edit and their publishers don’t bother too either since this is their cash cow, not their literary prize winner. I think a lot more love and attention from the authors went into their first books than any of the others sadly
This is such an interesting take because all the reviews I’ve seen about both Powerless and Lightlark, not made by popular SmutTok creators, is that the stories were bad from the start
haha yeah I’ve heard the same 😅the bar was low and yet they’re still getting worse.
Still though, the first books had to go through acquisition before it sold, so the authors and agents probably put a little more time into those. And I think how much time the authors had for their first books compared to the sequels (which in all 3 cases seems to be releasing on a book/year schedule - which is REALLY fast for publishing) is the primary factor impacting the quality.
@@julioolioopreads If I remember right, Lightlark was acquired mostly on hype videos based on things that never appeared in the book and Aster's Tiktok audience, and Fourth Wing was also acquired on premise (or Yarros was approached by Red Tower with a prompt, but I can't find anything to prove that).
@@jojobookish9529 damn if that’s the case… my argument does not hold
@@julioolioopreads It's okay. We like to believe the best in people, but at this point... 😅
My main question i have is "why do all these romanticy books have such dark and aggressive male leads". Maybe i'ts my "vanilla" preference but it feels weird that in all this insane epic adventure that any of the characters don't want like a soft comfy romance with someone as safety from all the insanity
Exactly my thoughts!!
They way those "romances" are written is just distracting
right! like its fine to like "spicy" stuff in the bedroom thats all well and good but why does that then require the super dark aggressive, possessive ML every. single. time...
Girl I suggest the contra points twilight video, it’s like a 3.5 hour amazingly produced discussion of why some people like those characters. I also can’t stand them and feel honestly a bit disappointed that so many women are into these men and relationships who are just saturated with the gender binary and heteronormativity, but the contra points video does a great job at explaining where it comes from and makes me a bit more sympathetic to what women who are enjoying it are thinking.
@@Editorialzero i'm a guy but thanks for the recommendation
Just once, Id like to see a romantasy that breaks all the tropes: shadow daddy LI turns out to be evil, the real MMC love interest is the nerdy awkward wizard (like Gale from BG3), FMC isn't an overpowered mary sue, not overloaded with pointless smut, and the smut scenes aren't all written like a religious experience.
And the fantasy has solid worldbuilding.
You just described Shadow and Bone without the smut lol
Uprooted by Naomi Novik lol
@@ladyblubels&b only have the shadow daddy villain, and as far as I remember the first book was okay and the second was _bad_
There's so many like that tbh
I think some of these Romantasy authors read Wuthering Heights as preteens and thought Heathcliffe and Kathy should be relationship goals.
The energy Maria came at us with in the opening was both tragic but also deeply, deeply giving us a gift I didn't know we needed
33:55 it's frustrating because in a better book, the concept of bad guys drawing power from the earth (and in doing so, damaging the earth) could be used to flesh out themes about humanity's exploitation of the natural world. like the metaphor about militarized societies depleting the earth with no regard for long-term consequences is RIGHT THERE
Soooo Xaden used his Shadow Daddy powers to make a Shadow Fold like in Shadow and Bone? What's next? He'll manifest The Cut to protect Violet? Honestly these books are just the same things with different character names. 🤣😂🤣😂
I like to imagine they are the same actors only putting in they face those glasses with a big nose and a mustache and starts to pretend to be a different person
Are you talking about Yarros plagiarizing?
My theory on why the venin can’t draw magic off-continent is that if Yarros hadn’t nerfed them, it would become obvious they should have won ages ago.
I don't have EDS, but if I had a rib broken I would be miserable and suffering for at least a few weeks and if someone made me go anywhere ESPECIALLY at first, I would be a whiny little bitch THE ENTIRE TIME.

I probably have eds (not diagnosed yet) but when I have a flare-up, which means when the usual pain becomes worse or more frequent, all I want to do it avoid moving or wrap myself in my braces and distract myself lol from what I've seen from these books, Violet is simply not good representation. Yarros just forgets every other page that her MC is supposed to be representation. As much as you're gonna push yourself, with training and combat etc, at some point your body is going to give out. Being chronically ill means if you're not being treated or at least pacing yourself, your body will deteriorate. (If you've seen the not-quite-recent Batman movie where the doctor goes over Bruce's x-rays and tells him his knees are basically fucked up because the joints have been overused and hurt? Yeah) and from what I've seen from other people with EDS and similar conditions, extreme strain on your body WILL suddely leave you bedridden or needing a new mobility aid.
Anyway TLDR, these books are not good representation
Thanks for taking one for the team! I've been waiting for your video ever since I heard that the book was coming out this January.
Damn. Maria's getting so heated she's taking her earrings off.
YES!!!! I WAS SO HYPED FOR YOU GUYS TO READ(suffer through) IT!!
Y’all might like So Let Them Burn. Its descriptions of dragon riding and the revolution already being done, and this is the aftermath of that are just so compelling.
I gave 3,5-4 stars, there's some problems I forgave because it's the author's debut, but I second the recommendation because I had a good time reading it
@ I agree-there are some anachronisms that annoyed me, and the pacing is a bit off, but I think the bones are well constructed.
Y’all Rebecca Yarros was at my university this week doing like an Onyx storm book signing and tickets were 300$. 😂 what College student or professor is gonna have that kinda money
Hope this video is good for engagement on your channel. I thank you for being stronger than i ever will be by reading 3 books in this series. The disparity between the popularity and quality of these books is mind-boggling to me.
Watching Katie's slow descent into madness over these books was hilarious. Watching her go from, "it was not a good book but it wasn't horrible" in the first video to "these books are my mortal enemy for the end of time" was amazing 😂 Her hatred for these books is valid though
Every time you mentioned Violet being a girl boss, I just imagined her yelling "I'm going girl boss!" and transforming like she was Danny Phantom or something.
I had a good friend tell me I didn’t like OS because I don’t read fantasy and don’t understand it. She’s correct in that I don’t read fantasy, but I do read a lot from other genres. I think I can tell what books have a concept of a plot, any semblance of character development, and is engaging and cohesive. The fact that so many plot points were dropped on us to never be spoken of again drove me nuts. I can also differentiate between books that are well written and books that may be somewhat trashy, but still entertaining and fun. OS was neither.
Im gonna poke the bear, how Yarros writes about EDS is damn near the same to Rick Riordan writing adhd and dyslexia
Earlier today I saw someone on Facebook saying to leave Rebecca Yarros alone, Brandon Sanderson's writing in the first Mistborn books was on the same level....and I just...what.
No way 💀
@sava-smth right? Absolutely unhinged take.
Ok like the first book of Mistborn is rough at points, more of a product of the time than anything else. Brandon Sanderson WORST writing day is better than Yarros’ best writing.
God? What? The first chapter sticks in my head every time. Like the first Mistborn sold me, rough as it was, because Kelsier was so well established.
While first years/tries can be tricky, by the third release, you no longer have that excuse.
Edit: And, as pointed out to be me, this is in no way her first time writing something big and connected.
I’m honestly surprised that Yarros can somehow drop the bar lower on how terrible the writing can be that a book can have so much and yet do so little.
I can't believe it took three books for so many people to turn on it. I was done after the first.
Same
It might be nostalgia, but the Codex Alera does this better. The main character has a different kind of bond with his girlfriend than there has ever existed. It is basically just shared abilities and vibes. There's questions about how various magics work on the different continents. The characters discuss theories, and there's tension when they try them out. Or jokes because the people who made the theories clearly based them on sexist, classist, or nationalist ideas that the main characters see through or question. And they're not perfect because they sometimes fall for it and have to be called out by other characters.
Honest to god, I listened to like 3 videos about this book and I still have no idea what’s going on…. 🤦🏻♀️
Just because you can mimic the style of fantasy in the past, doesn’t give you a pass to have it not mean anything.
These books and I would say the romantasy genre in general are so obsessed with the aesthetics of fantasy, but are written by people who don’t care about things like themes or narrative cohesion
They just want to hit all the boxes so that their books can sell to a certain market. I’ve said this before, but we seriously need to have authors who understand how to tell story working in the genre if it’s ever going to improve, if not, then history will vindicate it as the complete garbage dump that it is.
The entire fourth wing series gives me confidence in my writing ability for my novel. WOW.
What's with these 'romantasy' series completely skipping the MCs weddings for shock value??? I heard this happens in Lightlark too. Imo it's an overreliance of tropes without putting in the effort for even subpar character development.
So hyped for this video. I did not enjoy Fourth wing but decided to still give Iron flame a chance and deeply regretted it. Obviously decided not to torture myself by reading onyx storm, despite all the hype and the desire to hate read, if only for morbid curiosity.
So glad you guys decided to torture yourself instead, it'll satisfy my curiosity and probably so much more entertaining than if I had to actually read this lmao
This deserves another watch because of what UTT endured. ❤
not Katie comparing the smexy scenes to the sims woohoo and being 100% correct in saying the sims did it better
I've been wanting this for days. I adore you guys for making this happen. Long live the Textual Tension!!!!!!
how does book-tok consider it a real book
low IQ women?
@ yea but it’s fair to criticize the quality of a book. I don’t hate the story she is trying to tell I just think it was done poorly. There are definitely objective qualities to reading books my friend
I said it in the discord but i think a good critique scene would be the scene with the dinner with Xayden's mom because it is all the dumb things in one nice little package
I just found out the series is gonna be five books and I just wanna say I'm devastated
19:50 genuinely, its like Vi is the love interest character in shadow daddy's (so much more fun to say than his real name) story, but instead we are in her head constantly following her around and she got a few too many OP skills tossed her way, and i dont get it did yarros just...not realize who the actual MC turned out to be? the way Vis goals and story are written is just so "reactionary to story events + support the love interest", its maddening
Round three: fight!
If none of you would read the next one I know two people who Will can force to read them. Their names rhyme with Malerie and Mlindberd.
We appreciate your sacrifice to provide us with the podcast.
In my heart, i still cling to the hope we aren’t in the absolute worse timeline. Because there's at least one alternate timeline where these books have been made into movies... and there are 2 more books / 3 more movies in the series.
Will was onto something with author jail...
I'm liking this vid beforehand, because I know it's going to be a laugh for me, even if it was painful for you 😁
See when you review a book you like, I tend to get a few mins in and want to read it. Review books like this and I have no issues listening to the spoilers!
I listened on podcast while I went for a walk, very entertaining, but playing here for the algo.

@@unresolvedtextualtension hihi I will check it out!
Yessss! I have been waiting!
The most wild thing is that I kept getting reels from fourth wing fans being angry at the writing of this book! That fanbase is really loyal so how did Yarros mess up so bad they turned on her?!
The Isle Kingdoms and the customs of their inhabitants somewhat broke my trust that RY is a good writer who is holding a great grand finale to this series in her pocket and we will have the pleasure of experiencing something really special in last two books.
I straight up read fanfiction in my current fandom right now that is better than this that has better plot and better stakes and better smut. Actually saying that is a bit of a disservice to the fanfiction because the writers of it tend to actually care more about their story than Rebecca does about anything in this series
I read fourth wing and hated it, and i only read the sequal cause my sister already had it on audio and i needed something to listen to during the graveyard shift. I haaaaated it. xaden and especially violet became some of my most hated book characters ever. Terrible world building, non existent side characters I can barely call one note, and annoying dragons who's holier then thou attitudes cause more problems then they solve(and we're supposed to side with the dragons). I have no intention of reading onyx storm but I like ya'll vids amd I have another graveyard shift started so this video is very much appreciated.
My Onyx Storm review TLDR... no seriously, life is finite, I don't have time for any of all that.
I’m only 70 pages in and am watching yall cautiously to avoid too many spoilers but around 9:00 you said she doesn’t recap anything and that’s bc I think the endings for IF was supposed to be the midpoint but there wasn’t enough filler so they extended it out to the venin battle and what is at the start of OS was part of the aftermath of what should have been the third book. It doesn’t read like the beginning of a book AT ALL, and the pacing of IF was wonky as hell. It’s very weird.
Omg I get so much joy from listening to you guys roast bad books. I would kill for a couple friends as witty and sharp as you guys. It’s a rare thing.
Not me watching this a second time because my wrath needs to be quenched. This book did only one good thing... it helped me discover the limit of my literary masochism. Yarros is dead to me
I clocked this in Fourth Wing, but I knew Xadens entire personality in the rest of the series was going to be his “love” for Violet. Similar to what happened to Casteel in the From Blood and Ash series and it looks like I was right.
the fact that yall did 3 of these books is impressive good on you guys on calling it quits
Did Katie happen to go to high school in Texas at any point? I s2g she was in my creative writing class but if not she has a doppleganger lol
I have been trying to get through Fourth Wing for far too long (DNFing isn't a thing I can do, so I just put books down for a while, read something better, and come back later), and I decided to start watching rant reviews to get spoilers because I don't care anymore. I binged multiple videos from multiple creators about Iron Flame and could retain *nothing* about that book. 😂 My attempts to find out what happened in Onyx Storm have yielded similar results.
OMG I heard they would make a live action of this just like Game of thrones, that took forever and I don't have enough years left in me for this too.
YEAHHHHHHH I WAS WAITINGGGG FOR THISSSSS (sorry for the caps)
I thought I was losing my mind with how much I hated this….i am SO HAPPY to find this. Shaking my head in agreement the whole time. Oh and I have EDS, makes me feel like a pretty crappy version of myself when I can barely get out of bed some days let alone fight a war/ride dragons…
I was always feeling like I had no intellect because I could not keep track of characters, the plot was…giving me whiplash even though nothing really happened. I want my money back.
Honestly I was shocked the third book was out bc i heard absolutely NOTHING about it. Even from the fans. So this being absolute dogshit doesn't surprise me lol
Katie's persona is morphing more and more into a teacher and I'm loving it!! 🫶
My show started!!! I really wanted you to read the 4th one, but I get it, I didn’t even read the second one
What I think is the funniest part of this whole trilogy is that I have not read it; I've listened to all three podcasts several times and all I remember about the plot is that it's in a magical military school and that there's a big fey wolf that kidnaps the MC... and I am pretty sure that is from a different book
Even if a good version of this series exists in Rebecca Yarros' head, with the way the publisher is forcing her to crank out one a year I don't see how she would ever be able to get it to page. She must be in a mad dash to get the rough draft of these books out in time.
Ok I could think of the word pointless. The first few chapters were annoying. The longing was over done. I thought they should have made life more because they didn’t know how much time they had left. Are those places coming back in the next two books. Why are our main group still in class. In harry potter it made sense but not for this book.
I would read the fourth one, just make it Patreon exclusive. I'd pay for it.
I think it's fair, if they're gonna suffer, get some coins from it
Ugh just finished a Historical romance where they hyped up the antagonist so much only for him to die quickly and pathetically... hated it
I was wondering if y’all would read this one considering how much you hated Iron Flame 😂
It is a power fantasy for teens and women with the emotional maturity of teens
You could explain the island earth magic disconnection by using the fact continents and oceanic islands/plates are made of different materials irl.
Oh, there are unlimited ways how to explain this. Ranting about that part was own goal by the three hosts of this shitshow.
@@u.v.s.5583 They ranted because: yes, there are unlimited ways to explain it and Yarros chose none of them. 🙅♂
@ I do think it should become more clear after reading books 4 and 5.
I only read the first two chapters of book 1 and yeeted that shite into the sun, always love hearing you all tear these books to pieces, but can't fathom how you've been able to make three videos from such a vapid and hollow series. Having said that, I'm hurt it sounds like you all hated the Lies of Locke Lamora (cause it's my favorite heist book) and somehow you all also love that Gideon the Nineth book. It's wild how our tastes can be diametrically opposed on some books and yet we're totally insync on books like His Majesty's Dragon, Dark Lord of Derkholm, and (loathed) Iron Widow.
You guys should read the Shatter Me series! I loved the first trilogy in it but I have a feeling you would hate it lol

Whoa, whoa, whoa! At least Naruto is fun and has characters that I actually care about. Onyx Storm ain't got nothing on that anime. Yeah, it can have filler episodes, but they do move the plot forward in some way and are still fun to watch. (Sorry, it's just one of my favorite series and I couldn't bare the thought of it being compared to something as god-awful as this book.)
Naruto gives more backstory and emotion in a single fight than this series does in 3 books. Even if that fight is like...12 episodes long.😂
I've been watching it for the first time over the past few weeks, and it is unhinged and I love it. The "filler" episode where their only goal is to see Kakashi's face... delightful. Those filler episodes seem to pop up as mood resets after something really heavy happens. Though for the love of God, will Sakura ever be allowed to *do anything*?? It's so odd, because the character herself is aware of this about herself, but the show keeps sidelining her.
@@jojobookish9529 Omg you literally just said everything I feel about it! I'm rewatching it now (on season 6) because I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I absolutely love it.
Granted, season 6 is having a lot of filler episodes, but before that, every episode & season were moving the plot forward.
And yes, it does an amazing job with backstory that gets you invested in the characters.
I'm so glad someone else pointed out the whole Sakura thing. She's my least favorite character because she doesn't do anything. All because the writers are aware of it, doesn't mean it's exactly fun to watch.
@@RandomWitch1617 it's like they keep telegraphing a major breakthrough for her, even give her a few, but then gave up. It's bizarre. Especially with how badass Tsunade is, it isn't like they're allergic to the concept.
@@jojobookish9529 Exactly! I just wish Sakura was special, too. But there's nothing special about her (except for Cha, but even that disappears after a while). At least make it so since she knows she's not strong or whatever, she works really hard to become strong so she could be useful. But it's so weak
@@jojobookish9529so glad I stumbled upon this little discussion bc I’ve been rewatching Naruto for the first time since I was like 12, and the writing for some of the female characters is so jarring. Sakura’s the most obvious, it’s like her character development keeps ramping up to be *something* but it just fizzles out right before the climax. I think the mangaka said that he has trouble writing female characters and it SHOWS, it’s such a shame too bc I think if even just Sakura was a bit better written then Naruto would be one of my faves ever :/

I would LOVE you to read more of the Hyperion Cantos, oh my goodness
Honestly, y'all brought up something interesting that's been on my mind, and that's these male characters and their obsessive love for the female characters
It's portrayed as very romantic and "don't you want this?" But it honestly sounds terrifying. Like, I would rather have a partner where we get to be equals and talks when there might be disagreements or even has their own morals and reasons for why they would support my ideas
Could certainly prevent me from doing something stupid or rash because I DON'T know all the answers to the world
