You’re scooping out your cat’s litter box when you see something alarming: blood in your cat’s stool. Just what does it mean if you see blood in cat poop? And how worried do you need to be?
Blood in your cat’s stool can vary in appearance. Bright red blood in stool (hematochezia) is fresh and black blood (melena) is older-it appears black because it’s been digested or partially digested by the cat. Black or tarry looking stool is an emergency.

One of my cats had blood on her poop, hematochezia, for years, and the vet found nothing wrong with her anus nor rectum, nor any parasites. Recently I changed her food from Hills Science Diet i/d kibble, to Feline Natural pouches (which are all animal parts), and no more hematochezia. I believe she had problems with the corn gluten in the kibble irritating her digestive tract, which is the 2nd ingredient, and possibly the other grains in it. Cats are obligate carnivores, and they have no business eating a lot of grain!! The moral of this story is: check your cat’s food for irritating ingredients, like corn gluten, wheat, rice, and corn. Also beware of “meat by-products.” Please do research on what the proper diet for cats is. Just because a cat food is “scientific” and “premium” and expensive, doesn’t mean it’s healthy for your cat to eat. One of my cats, who ate that Hills i/d her whole life, died of kidney failure at age 10.

@@MURZBO thank you. Yes, it broke my heart. Another cat of ours died of cancer at age 11, 6 weeks before the 10-year-old. It was a very hard experience for all of us, including the remaining and now lonely cat. After the 2 died, that’s when I switched the remaining cat’s food to something much better.
I change my kitten food from reflex to core wellness and i saw blood drops but i made his food better idk why😭

I heard a kitten crying in my backyard. I found a maybe 3 week old kitten that actually rushed toward me from its hiding place. I know it had been there all night alone and crying because I heard it but was too dark to find it. I gave a tiny bit of coconut milk and some chicken broth and ordered bottle and kitten milk to be delivered the next day. I kept her warm, holding her most of the night. When the heating blanket arrived I gave her a light bath and it was pink with blood. She pooped out something long and hard like a sticker/stick, but my husband threw the mess away before I could exam it. I have never owned a cat/kitten and watched several videos to identify age and learn about care. It's been almost a week and she appears to be thriving, but today I actually saw the bright red blood dripping out of her little butt. I live on a very small fixed income and have spent close to $100.oo already. I will take to the vet as soon as she can get her in. I have a dog so I know my vet and she is good; but I was hoping to find out about what would happen if the problem was from being thrown over my six foot fence. If it's internal bleeding, what will that mean. How can I make her comfortable? She is playful, eating well and very loving. She purrs and cries at the same time. I wish I could find her momma. Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When our cat was 21 he started with hematochezia we went straight to the vet. He started him on antibiotics and did blood tests etc but it was only when he did more evasive procedures did we find out it was the start of a cancer on his lower bowel. Because we acted early that we managed to have another year with him and maintain a decent quality of life. I can't sing our vet's praises enough, in fact everyone in the practice is phenomenal.

Wish this had come out before my cat got non-small cell lymphoma and had to be put to sleep because he was suffering and the vets couldn’t help him. I kept bringing them stool samples and all they tested for was parasites, so tests always came back negative. Then, with vet shut down due to COVID, and he missed his annual check up. A year later, he’s dead and my heart is broken, as is his brother’s.

I could’ve used this video about a month ago when I saw some bright red blood in my kitten’s poop after changing him to another dry food, I have since just returned him to his original diet that was given to him by his previous owners and started giving him wet food, blood is gone but now I’m worried about trying to change his dry food again
My 2 year old cat has had fresh blood on his poo for a month now, i took him to the vets 3 times they didnt help much and he gets too stressed when i take him there. Ive now booked for a vet to come to my house unfortunately i have to wait a week. They will do a stool sample & more hopefully it all clears up soon I’ve been so worried its making me sick. On the plus side he eats and drinks well, he’s playful so he’s not suffering. I cant wait to get this sorted and leave it behind us!

I’ve had this with my two 7 month old kittens and it started a couple of days after giving them flea tablets from the vet. It’s happened twice now so I know it’s definitely the monthly flea tablets. I’ve got them booked in for a check-up and have to take stool samples. The flea tablets are strength for cats from 2kg up to 8kg so I think it’s too high strength for them as they’re only just over 2kg 🤔
Mine bleeds because she insists on eating hair she pulls out when grooming her long hair..it is undigested when passing thru and makes little cuts in her rectum when pooping it out.I am trying to pre-groom her to get less hair taken in,but,it is a challenge.
Vet has confirmed flea tablet poisoning and will no longer prescribe them and feed back to the manufacturer.

My cat had hemacotezia when she was about 1, off and on for months. Poop tests all ok, blood tests ok, no pain. Unknown cause. I suspect it was from eating coarse grass, as that’s what I was noticing her doing before it happened. And I think she was wanting to do that because she is fluffy and has never brought up a furball so I think she was feeling rubbish. She now has Fortiflora daily and a malt furball paste as well and she hasn’t had a problem for a few months. So I’m hoping we have got to the bottom of it 🤞

This is very helpful as my cat has small amount of blood in his stool recently . Hermatochezia I think. But he is 18 has dementia and Is very thin now. My vet won’t treat him due to his age. I hope he isn’t in any pain, he doesn’t seem to be. There was a drop of blood outside his litter box tonight but his poop looked fine and I squeezed it in the tissue and no blood in it at all. Should i be worried?

My cat started to have blood in his poop and diarrhoea 3 years before he died. The free vets kept putting me off. In the end they said he had chronic kidney disease and was pts. I'm sure he could have been treated.

Notice all the testing? Sometimes-very often it is caused by food allergies, or rapid change of food. Check for bacteria first, along with withholding food for 12 hours to give his tummy time to rest, then add WET food that the cat has eaten MANY times before. Make sure kitty is hydrated (Pull skin up on back of the neck- it should snap back quickly if cat is hydrated. If not, time to see a vet. But try to wean out the easy things first. Some vets- like this one want to hundreds of dollars worth of testing before even trying the simpler things. If cat isn't bleeding alot, but small amounts, and diareah isn't too frequent, it should be ok to try to wean out the problem. Mom of 30 cats

Unfortunately, the video doesn't go over smell too much, but any odor change suggests a change in your cat's diet or health. If you've recently changed her diet, that could be the culprit. Otherwise, a vet visit may be a good idea!
My cat got diarrhoea with some blood in the middle of it last night. He went on the bathroom mat. He always goes outside and buries it. We're a bit worried but its Easter atm. Is waiting a few days ok? Surely this isn't an emergency as he is himself as always this morning.
What about dark red blood combined with heavy mucus? (Don't worry, not an emergency, this happened a while ago, and that cat is no longer with us, from unrelated reasons.) I'm curious because i assumed it was food related, it cleared up when she had to go on kidney food.
I’m not a vet, nor do I play one on TV, but in my experience, the problem is irritation of the gut by something. Food? Parasites? Foreign objects? Personally, I’ve had gut issues where I eat an irritating thing, like gluten, and my intestines sluff off a lot of lining, which looks like mucus/slime. (I know this is a stretch, as I’m also not a cat. 😸)

I need urgent help. Both my cats are having hermatochezia. Earlier my elder cat had blood in stool for a month and then my younger cat is also having the same problem. I took them to vet but everything the tests and all came out negative they gave injections and medicine but nothing happened it's 2 months now and I'm helpless. Can you please suggest what should I do. My cats stay at home 24/7 since I rescued them and they are completely normal with food and other symptoms
What are they eating? That’s my first question. Look for irritants there. Is there grain in their food? Did they eat anything like string or tinsel? The coarse grass another commenter mentioned? What were they tested for, and what was the medicine and injections they got at the vet? Did the vet x-ray their digestive systems, not that that would show anything? How do they behave? Do they act depressed or sick?
Hey do you think you can do a video about cats fainting and going unconscious. Whenever my cat naps it will wake up by the slightest noise but lately sometimes he won't wake up. If I move him or make noise no matter what he'll just be limp and ragdoll and won't regain consciousness for about 30 seconds. He's only 4 so I dought its anything with old age. I feel like this could help alot of people
Logan, that's a good question. Cats don't fall into a deep sleep for as long as humans do, but they slip into deep sleep cycles on a regular basis, and to my understanding, this can cause cats to go completely limp as you're describing. However, your cat may also be losing consciousness due to a health condition, so I would bring your cat into a vet to make sure that everything is okay. Okay,here is what is happening with my cat. She has long hair..she loves to .groom..she pulls hair out while grooming and the eats it unless I am on the scene and yank it out of her mouth( usually scares her)..the hair then goes through her digestive system undigested ..then it comes out of her rectum inside her poop..then it cuts her rectum and causes bleeding.I took her to the vet when I first saw the bright red blood..they did tests on the poop and pronounced her healthy and said that was causing the bleeding.I have tried to “ pre-groom “ her by brushing her but I can’t always be around when she grooms. I am worried it could cause serious problems …unsure what to do at this point?

I would recommend separating your cats into different rooms so that they'll use different litter boxes. You should also look for any signs of illness, including lethargy, vomiting, unwillingness to eat, and changes in behavior.

The vet didn't think it was anything to be alarmed about, possibly straining too hard. Not sure. When I take her back in to get re-checked for her Hyperthyroidism, I'll discuss with the Vet. I hope it's nothing more serious than what I already have found out. Thank you

I understand it’s impossible to fully evaluate a cat without seeing this and generally should visit a vet, with that said funds are short and I (am) saving up but until then this is my problem:
My cat (3 years roughly) Female
Has had blood in her poop for a few months, bright red it is in her poop but also drips slightly around the floor.
She has been eatting normally, has a healthy diet, and gets fresh water daily.
Nothing has changed, she still plays, drinks and eats normally and seemingly when she goes to the bathroom there isn’t a issue.
What could this be? Or what would you suggest. This has been going on for awhile and she’s not seeming to be in any pain, could colon, leukemia etc be showing signs after a few months or is this somthing that creeps up slowly and the blood is a warning sign.

Hi Necole, the first step would be finding your cat. Vomiting may be a sign of poisoning, so I would advise contacting a vet if you observe this or any other symptoms after you've found her.

Just thought I’d have a listen. Pretty much the same with humans they should always keep an eye on their feces. It tells a lot. Thanks for posting I know there’s a lot of people out there who will find this very interesting and let’s hope they do take their cats to the vet and not try to just leave it or not get it healed

Hi Mariam, I would recommend talking to a vet to confirm, but in general, fresh blood in poop/on your cat's bum one time is not necessarily a reason for concern as long as it only happens once and is not accompanied by any other symptoms.

@@AndresLopez-rb2bk the vet told me since she eating ,playing, and being her usual self that it might be the food im feeding her especially since my other cat is having issues too. Only one of my cats have blood sometimes tho but the vet said there diet could cause blood if they have sensitivities to it. I bought new food im waiting for it to come in the mail. I'll let you know if it works out. If ur cat has no other issues try a new diet.

Teresa, it's always difficult! I would try to separate the cats for a while to ensure that they're forced to use their litter boxes separately for a while, then monitor each one to identify which cat is affected.

Thank you for telling me how to figure out which end was the problem, because once I knew that, then I could research natural remedies. My vet wanted thousands for tests and no guaranties. I have a 3 1/2 year-old orange and white male cat, and for the first time ever, I just saw a stream of bright red blood dripping out of his anus. He grooms himself a lot down there with constant licking. I’m hoping that’s the cause but I’ve never seen blood there before and I’m scared to death. I’m physically, disabled and bedridden, and my cat is my best friend and all I have in this entire world… I don’t know what to do ☹ I look at his butt all the time when he’s walking away from me to make sure it’s clean and he doesn’t have dingleberries or anything like that and I’ve never seen blood there before. What do you need to do to keep your cat healthy? Of course, it is important to treat your cat when it gets sick, but it is also important to take good care of its body in its daily life, to prevent it from getting sick, and to prevent it from getting sick. The basis of your cat’s health is her/his diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they must eat meat to survive. Most commercial cat foods have a lot of grains in them, and are thus not healthy for cats to eat.
I guess your comment about saving money on vet bills refers to the fact that when you see blood in your cat's stool to take your cat and the sample in immediately. Based on all the different tests and things that are ran it seems like vets would charge hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I love my cat don't get me wrong but at some point you hope that the cat will be able to work itself through these things.
