  • Have you ever looked at a ukulele & thought to yourself "geez, I sure wish this instrument could get any smaller..." Well, have you come across travel ukes? Here's the shootout video I've been waiting for over the past 2 years, & since nobody made one, I thought I just had to do it myself, to save the rest of you the trouble (& money)... =P
Kala vs Lanikai vs Ohana, all solid brands, all solid instruments, but at the end of the day I suppose it all boils down to personal preference. The Lanikai featured in this video is a bocote finish, though they also do the same body shape in a beautiful flame maple finish, but I'm not THAT curious (or rich)...
One thing I forgot to mention was the comparison between carry cases that they all come supplied with. Both the Lanikai & Ohana cases have an extra front pouch compartment, whilst the Kala case just fits the uke only, which makes it the slimmest for storage or transport, though the extra pocket is definitely useful for travel & gigs, tuner, spare batteries, felt picks, chord books, strap, etc.

Oh, that Lanakai is beautiful! Im pretty set on picking up a Lanakai MA-C, for my first Uke. Either the Lanakai or the Kala KA-C. Any thoughts?

Just had a quick look at them both & I'd say for sound they should be much of a muchness with both having mahogany bodies. The main difference I see would depend on the type of finish you prefer. The Kala looks more straightforward, with a simple clean finish, whereas the Lanikai looks a bit fancier with its bound edge & a more patterned surface. Over here in Australia it looks like the Lanikai is also twice the price of the Kala! If it's your first uke though, I'd probably suggest looking up your local marketplace on facebook or gumtree or something like that, as there are usually HEAPS of decent instruments going at real good prices. Better even still if you can wait till early next year when people are shifting their unwanted Christmas presents or doing a bit of spring cleaning. ;)
