The two brothers fought each other because they decided to rule together and switch the position of power with each other after certain time. When it was polyneikes turn, his brother wouldn't let go of his power which is why they started fighting. This is another reason why it is unfair that polyneikes didn't get buried and his brother, eteokles, did. Eteokles didn't keep his promise and wanted all the power to himself whereas polyneikes fought for fairness.
The weirdest bit about this story I think is that the gods are barely involved? Creon’s hubris dooming him is entirely of his making. And perhaps that’s interesting in and of itself.
When you read the play the presence of god is there all right. The gods’ will mainly materialize through supernatural occurrences, like a sudden sandstorm that conceals Antigone from the guards’ eyes.
@@daniellevy2272 Wait, you're saying that this ancient Greek text is about the Christian God 😭😭😭??? Doesn't the Bible start in 0 AD/BC? Maybe my memory of history is loopy
For my BA in Classics and my MA in Classical Studies, I did not study Sophocles 'Antigone'. However, after watching this two minute video, now I realize how tragic this Greek play was.
this is one of the worst tellings of Antigone ive ever heard of my life, its missing so many crucial details, Antigone cornered king Creon into condemming her to death, even though he tried to save her, because the burial of her brother wasnt something she sought out to do out of honor and respect to the gods, it was nothing but a pretext to end her life, as she had realized she was a product of incest. there are many more details missing from this video
I have studied Antigone in school from the ancient Greek script to modern Greek! Now i am studying Antigone as one of OU's modules of Arts and Humanities! There is something I will never understand though... Why this tragedy is named by Antigone's name and not Creon's?!😅
@Rina To prevent the deeds that make the Gods angry with you. This is considered wisdom by the Greek. Fear of their rage because bad things will happen if you make them angry
the moral of the story is to honor the gods but it’s irrelevant to modern times so it can be interpreted as law versus morality. the law was that polyneikes be left behind (regardless of him honestly being the victim) and antigone honored her family more than the law. in perspective, its like people getting harsh punishment that is undeserving. greek mythology often shows victims appearing as villians like the story of medusa who was assaulted and made into a monster but this is far darker and dramatic

Thank you I was wondering why they fought in the first place, your comment helped

Antigone may have spoken the greatest line in Greek theatre when boldly she asks Creon this question. "Can one man be the government"?

Sometimes, one can creat hell all by himself, where heaven can only come from G-D.
Perhaps that is the point

Still is.
We studied Antigone at school in parallel, in both English class and Classical Greek class. Such fun!
Triple kill, so GREEK MYTHOLOGY LIKE...
That's life. Not different than the Sopranos.

What is it with the Greeks and death?
And incest too. Oepidus had children with his mother. Antigone was Creon's niece and Haimon (Creon's son) was betrothed to her.
they were very aware of theyr own mortality, unlike us...
Oh my god , I have an exam tomorrow and it's about the Antigone 😂
Thanks 🌺
what about the last day of a condemned man
Good luck in your exam! Are you doing an undergraduate degree at the Open University or studying somewhere else?

So what was the moral of the story I'm confused.

And why do people mention this in relation to incest?
Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus, who accidentally married his mother, Jocasta, unknowingly.
