Chic designer? Beauty contestant? Headstrong neighbor lady? Picking between them is a tricky decision, so it's a good thing Eddie's in charge of the picking for his widowed dad. Vincente Minnelli directs Ron Howard and Glenn Ford in the family classic film that mixes mirth and heartache in its portrait of a boy intent on forcing his father to accept loss and move on. Shirley Jones, Dina Merrill and Stella Stevens play Eddie's prospects. Mark Toby's novel would also provide the basis for the later beloved Bill Bixby television series.
    Directed By Vincente Minnelli
Starring Glenn Ford, Shirley Jones, Stella Stevens

I remember being so blown away by Ron Howard's performance in this move. He was the best child actor ever. And the fact that he turned into a well-adjusted adult, renowned director, and all-around nice guy is icing on the cake.

The fish was symbolic of his mom dying. For a little kid that fish dying was big. Dad just didn't understand.

Wow. Ron Howard is amazing in this scene. We think of him now as a talented director but ... the kid could act!

Nah, his acting career was probably over before he reached 18. 😉

This is a really great movie. Funny every now and then so it's not so dramatic. Happy ending of course

I first watched this movie in 2015 when it aired on TCM. This scene really startled me. It was so disturbing to watch Ron Howard's character freak out like that.

Ron Howard gave a believable performance of a traumatic child.

Glenn Ford is 47 in this movie and he looks like a retired banker.
