- In this report, our team travelled to Velyka Novosilka where the Ukrainian army has penetrated the frontline 6 kilometers deep. We meet with the crew of the French light tank AMX-10RC and documented the results of Russian occupation in the newly liberated villages of Neskuchne and Storozheve.

@@operator9858The AMX was pretty good if you use them correctly.. If you use them like MBT you loose.. They have a good optic with good canon. But, the armor was very poor..
3 AMX were loss actually.. 3 of them abandonned after take mine. One of them get shot by a 152mm arty. The Shell explose a 5 or 6 meters ( when you look picture ) the fragments of shell penetrate the armor and kill the crew..
I saw in Africa a AMX get shot by 14.5mm and he luckily resist..
I talk with a guy who formed Ukrainian guy on this. 50% of the Ukrainian was normal T72 Crew member, they want to use them in direct assault (Error in my opinion ), the rest of guy was recon unit.
assurely not the best tank but...we don't have many things to do war .We would never have thought something like this possible with the russians and we thought it was really a thing of the past the cold soviet war.Otherwise we would have been ready to help a lot more...By chance Uncle Sam is ever ready !!!

I have to say I'm guite impressed by the pristine condition of the AMX's interior. Compared to the decay in Ruzzian vehicles they look like they've just rolled of the production line. A testament to French army mainenance.

The AMX-10 RC isn't a tank like a Leopard 2. It's a reconnaissance vehicle, like the light cavalry in the ancient times while the Leopard 2, the Abrams or the Leclerc are the heavy cavalry. Thus you can't expect to be as armoured as one of these 3 tanks
you don't need to look at antiquity to make a comparison, during the Second World War there was a category that has almost disappeared today, light tanks.

The fact that it can take direct and indirect fire from artillery and they walked away and fighting again is a testament to the engineers who made it. good job France
this thing will not take any direct artillery fire. it got penetrated through and through by a 152 landing by its wheel apperently. its not ment to be hit, shoot on the move or to lead an offensive. its a recon vehilce that could be effective in defending its positions.

I served on the AMX13 with 105mm cannon, and it weighed 15 ton, which for a tank
with that firepower is very light. (top speed 70 km hour....)

most of them were sold to Indonesia.
We used them in a recon platoon,and for artillery protection duty.
The problem with Ukraine is the officer corps have still alot of dumb soviet trained idiots.
And the BMP 1 and 2 used widely by both sides has equally little armor

I'm French and I am glad we could help a bit the Ukrainians. From what I have heard still at least one AMX was unfortunately destroyed and its crew killed because it is an old vehicle and its armor is not so strong in the current conditions, with precise artillery, tanks and attack helicopters. It is in a nutshell an armored reconnaissance vehicle with a better gun, right now things are more static with the minefields etc. so it is probably best to use it in a mobile artillery role if this is possible (I am no expert) and then as a reconnaissance vehicle once the enemy lines are breached.
As a French person whose father did his army service as a AMX cannon shooter, this is insane to watch. Good luck to my Ukrainian brothers

That was a brilliant and touching report. The end scenes walking through what had obviously been a happy village in 2021, destroyed and empty now, tells the world all it needs to know about why it is vital the Russian invaders must be driven out.
This is funny, not too long ago the Ukrainians were complaining that the AMX-10 had terrible armor, that even low velocity artillery fragments could penetrate its armor. Now they are singing it's praises? Either the first complains were false or they are kissing French ass now so as not to offend them. 😂

Glass cannon, I mean no disrespect, these men are freaking brave, to ride one of this to combat is quite a task, that 105mm still pack a punch so they are going to been prioritize in combat and this is a very light armored vehicle. Fast, agile, quite powerfull but nimble. All my respects to these men and all service men and women in the UAF, this is an awful war they were forced on.

Now it's a reconnaissance vehicle, and you have to know how to use it for what it is and not for anything else, and I've had a lot of very good feedback from Ukrainian soldiers who are very satisfied with it.

The AMX can swim very well. I think it could have a great use in water crossing.
I know the armor is not that good but neither are those of humvees.
And yet they have been crucial for quick advances in the major battle victories.
I truly believe that, paired with other quick vehicles such as Bradleys and Humvees and under the cover of artillery and air defense, they can really kick some ass.
The only real problem is that mines don’t care about air cover or artillery.

It's not being used for full tank-on-tank battles. There are very few tank-on-tank happening, because of all the mines and ATGMs. It's mostly one or a few tanks just sniping a few shots on trenches/bunkers/troop concentrations to create chaos and remove cover/concealment to support the infantry. The AMX is pretty good at shooting from somewhere the Russians didn't expect it to be.
AMX-10 RC. Is a good reconnaissance vehicle when deployed corrected. They are not a tank.
We've seen the casualties caused by mines and the damage they deal to vehicles and people. It's sickening, we need to give Ukraine more mine clearing equipment, so many men are going to come home with missing legs and limbs due to NATO's hesitation and limitations. I believe in full victory for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

the AMX-10 RC is amphibious: it can cross a river. It is lightly armored so as not to sink!

The AMX-10 RC is distinct from the amphibious AMX-10P: they share automotive components, but have completely different battlefield roles. The AMX-10 RC has been upgraded many times. The DIVT-13 LLTV was replaced by using DIVT-16, 18 and 19 CASTOR thermal sights taken from decommissioned AMX-30B2 MBTs. For its part in the 1991 Gulf War, the AMX-10 RC was provided with extra-high-hardness steel add-on armour and EIREL infrared jammer. The original muzzle brake was replaced by a more efficient one (10% recoil reduction) after the introduction of the OFL 105 F3 APFSDS in 1987. The flotation barrier and the water pump jets were removed (their intakes were sealed).

Les Allemands ont une conception de la coopération industrielle toute germanique, qui consiste à uniquement prendre en compte leurs propres intérêts et à totalement ignorer l'intérêt de celui avec lequel ils s'associent. Ils sont d'accord pour piller nos technologies, mais pas pour développer une industrie franco-allemande qui puisse bénéficier à nos deux économies respectives. Après le succès du Rafale, et particulièrement les bonds technologiques des derniers standards de cet avion, ils sont évidemment très intéressés par nos technologies. Mais cela ne les empêche pas de continuer à subventionner l'industrie américaine en achetant du F35, sous des prétextes grossiers. Il ne s'agit avec eux que d'un rapport de force économique. Une coopération franco-italo-hélénique serait plus fructueuse il me semble. Quant au char franco-allemand on voit bien que la supériorité technologique du Leclerc intéresse les Allemands mais sans doute pour produire un char qu'ils vendront dans toute l'europe comme ils ont su le faire pour le Leopard 2, et notre industrie n'aura de cette coopération que de faibles retours. Et notre industrie n'aura plus de clientelle européenne. La coopération franco-allemande ne doit pas se borner à la conception mais doit s'étendre à la production et la commercialisation.

As stated by many: (especially under NATO military doctrine) every vehicle has its own field of employ under specific battlefield conditions: in Ukraine not always is possible to act strictly on those terms... so the accidents happened during the very first deployments of the AMX-10Rcs are sad, but understandable: I am sure that AFU will quickly understand, learn and adapt!!

Totally agree! Most importantly of all, the crew survived the loss of a vehicle, and gained valuable experience. Not something that can be said of most RF tank crews when put in a similar situation.

We never said it was a tank... Want to take on a Russian tank with it? go your way is that you have not understood the scope of employment of the vehicle in question.
And personally I have already dealt with the AMX at the time when I was in the alpine hunters and it was there mainly in support not in the front line. Warning this comment is not a bad reaction don't take it the wrong way I just wanted to clarify things without offending you.

The AMX-10 is a good machine, but it needs to be used properly. Mainly as a support or ambush vehicle. Anyone sending AMX-10s face to face against tanks must be an idiot. These are the main causes of losses among these vehicles.

from what i heard no tank currently in action on both side can take artillery hit, one of the reason may be that most of them dont have reactive armor or old version of it (including the one send by the US i believe).
german/uk/us tanks are also vulnerable to direct hit from tanks without their latest modern reactive armor

The AMX10 is NOT a tank but a fire support vehicle.
Its armor is much lighter compared to that of a tank, and it is a wheeled vehicle without caterpillars.
It does not provide comparable shooting performance nor any real protection, if faced against piercing ammo or even shrapnels.
The AMX10 has decent amphibious capabilities, it is designed to be compact and air droppable, has a powerful 105mm gun and it is used to support advancing troops.
It is a useful vehicle, but it is far from being a real main battle tank.
It is annoying when reporter wannabes don't even know what they are talking about and don't bother to get the needed knowledge, assuming their audience is just composed by complete ignorants.

the AMX 10 RC did not "carry troops" inside and it's a powerfull armed reconnaissance véhicle, totaly capable to destroy a heawy tank up to non modernized T72's
Shooting performance is very comparable. OCC 105 F3 and OFL 105 F3 are very potent rounds, plus its turret is dual plane and fully stabilized.

@@ilmaio incorrect..120mm are the province of MBT's. No one has ever said this is an MBT. Its role is shoot and scoot. Not only is its long 105mm more accurate then a standard 120, the tank itself is almost twice as fast while being a smaller target. I can tell you have no idea what youre talking about with the "piercing bullets" comment, especially since I just listed both of its more capable rounds. You can now sit in the corner with a dunce cap.

And yes, no tank can take a point blank 105 mm piercing shell and still function. But if you think that an AMX10 or even a Centauro2 (heavier, 8 wheel drive IVF with 120mm smoothbore gun) could face main battle tanks in a duel 1 vs.1 in open terrain, you know nothing about what a main battle tank is.
If the point is russian tanks are bad, this is another thing.
A T72 though is still superior to any IFV, having reactive armor and rapid fire, autoloaded, stabilized 120mm gun.
Probably a Centauro2 would fare well against modernized T62 and older T55s, yes, just because they are desperately obsolete.

As a self propelled Howitzer is no tank, the AMX is no tank. It is another class of vehicle.
All of them have big guns on top, can move and they are covered in armor, but they are designed for very different, very specific tasks.
I mean no disrespect to the AMX10, or self propelled Howitzers.
They can both destroy tanks: the AMX from very close distance in an ambush set up, the Howitzer from 15 kms, if some drone operator tells the Howitzer's crew where a parked tank is: they punch the coordinates into the targeting system, the 155mm shell is shot, and some dozens seconds later the tank is splattered.
From few km apart, in sight through open flat terrain, one modern tank would disable any number of IFVs and motorized artillery, until someone gets a very lucky shot at the tank. Rapid stabilized fire, longer range, piercing-resisting armor, capable to pass through obstacles, 1200 Hp 40 tonnes monster with roaring caterpillar, radar, air defense, large supply of 120mm shells. That's a battle tank. The AMX10 is what, 16 tonnes?
It's what a tank is designed for, not for urban warfare or mountain terrain: destroy smaller, lighter vehicles.

really interesting to see a underdog on the "good" side, since most underdogs are called terrorists by the invader it is seldom that we can see and hear how they feel and why they fight. i Personally find this kind of fighting far more reasonable than any soldier that did go to Afghanistan, the Ukrainians defend their home the ISAF soldiers in Afghanistan did not. i do not like the military but if i need to i would join it to defend my country but not to go to one oceans away.

AMX-10 is not a tank. Tanks are heavily armored and tracked. The AMX-10 has just light armor and wheels, not tracks.
